Community Resilience Drives Change, Claudia Rose Dilima Jan 2026

Community Resilience Drives Change, Claudia Rose Dilima

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The opioid crisis has impacted many Americans. From 1999 to 2023, approximately 800,000 people have died due to opioid overdose (CDC, 2025). What began as overprescription of painkillers has evolved into a complex social health issue that is now worsened by stronger synthetic drugs like fentanyl. Fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (synthetic opioids that are very similar chemically to fentanyl) are often found in illegal drug supplies and in counterfeit pills (CDC, 2025). Thus, individuals who might have been initially overprescribed painkillers might now be pushed toward illegally produced drugs that are significantly more potent than what they were originally prescribed. …

Utilizing Plethodontid Occupancy To Assess Initial Ecosystem Responses To Invasive Plant Control Treatment In The Central Hardwoods, Maree Guinevere Dieterich Jan 2026

Utilizing Plethodontid Occupancy To Assess Initial Ecosystem Responses To Invasive Plant Control Treatment In The Central Hardwoods, Maree Guinevere Dieterich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Invasive plants are a growing concern for land managers, impacting ecosystem resilience and outcompeting native vegetation. To combat this, invasive plant control treatments can assist in reducing the impacts and spread of damaging, non-native plant species. However, intensive treatments completed at large scales have the potential to negatively impact ecosystem services as well. To monitor these impacts, I utilized a well-known indicator in the Central Applachian region, Plethodontid salamanders, to assess impacts of invasive plant control treatments in the Central Hardwood forests. I completed 12 visual samples across 60 sites in West Virginia, USA during Spring and Fall of 2025 …

Using Aqueous Geochemistry Of Acid Mine Drainage To Spatially Investigate Concentrations Of Rare Earth Elements Throughout West Virginia, Pennsylvania, And Maryland, Elyssa Lynn Allen Jan 2026

Using Aqueous Geochemistry Of Acid Mine Drainage To Spatially Investigate Concentrations Of Rare Earth Elements Throughout West Virginia, Pennsylvania, And Maryland, Elyssa Lynn Allen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rare earth elements (REEs) are an important commodity utilized in many industries such as electronics, defense, manufacturing, medicine, and green energy production. A lack of economical domestic sources forces the United States to import a majority of its supply, and incentivizes novel methods of acquisition. Mining regions of the United States, such as Appalachia or the West, are afflicted with acid mine drainage (AMD) impacted surface waters. REEs occur in varying concentrations within coal seams, indicating that coal and its waste are potential avenues of recovery that might also incentivize the remediation of coal impacted areas. Understanding spatial and geochemical …

A Multiobjective Framework For Joint Coverage And Motion Planning In Uav Inspection Tasks, Luis Fernando Escobar Carvajal Jan 2026

A Multiobjective Framework For Joint Coverage And Motion Planning In Uav Inspection Tasks, Luis Fernando Escobar Carvajal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become essential for data acquisition in complex 3D environments. However, traditional Coverage Path Planning (CPP) methodologies often rely on a sequential pipeline that isolates viewpoint generation from flight path routing. This decoupling fails to account for the interdependence between viewpoint distribution and minimum flight paths, effectively restricting the search space and preventing the identification of a global optimum. This dissertation proposes a unified multi-objective framework for joint coverage and motion planning. The primary contribution of this work is the transition from isolated, sequential steps to a simultaneous optimization of the number and position of viewpoints …

Studies On The Depth Formula And On Reducing Dimensions, Brian Mccourt Laverty Jan 2026

Studies On The Depth Formula And On Reducing Dimensions, Brian Mccourt Laverty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation presents the author’s recent research, conducted under the supervision of Professor Olgur Celikbas, and based on two articles—one published and one in progress. These works develop two closely related research directions in commutative algebra. Together, they contribute to the subject by addressing aspects of existing conjectures, establishing new results, and introducing methods for studying homological invariants.

The first research direction concerns the depth formula, namely the equality \[ \depth_R(M)+\depth_R(N)=\depth(R)+\depth_R(M\otimes_RN) \] where $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules. A classical result of Auslander \cite{Aus} shows that the depth formula holds provided that either $M$ or $N$ has finite …

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Confirming Behaviors Across Instructional Modalities, April Nicole Wright Jan 2026

Student And Teacher Perceptions Of Confirming Behaviors Across Instructional Modalities, April Nicole Wright

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation examined how undergraduate students and instructors evaluate lowinference teacher confirmation behaviors across instructional modalities and identified additional behaviors perceived as confirming in contemporary instructional contexts. Participants included 274 undergraduate students and 104 higher-education instructors who completed a survey measuring four clusters of confirming behaviors (willingness to engage, recognition, acknowledgment, and endorsement) using a 7-point Likert-type scale. Open-ended questions invited participants to describe confirming behaviors not represented in existing measures. Results indicated that both students and instructors rated most behaviors above the midpoint of the scale, with instructional responsiveness and course organization receiving the highest ratings. Instructors rated all …

Machine Learning-Based Prediction Of Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Emissions And Comparative Analysis Against Statistical Models, Abdullah Ahmad Khan Jan 2026

Machine Learning-Based Prediction Of Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Emissions And Comparative Analysis Against Statistical Models, Abdullah Ahmad Khan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The increasing stringency of emissions regulations for heavy-duty (HD) diesel engines necessitates the development of accurate, efficient, and general predictive models for engine-out emissions under steady-state operating conditions. Traditional statistical approaches, while computationally efficient, often fail to capture the inherent nonlinear relationships between the engine operating parameters and emissions formation. In contrast, machine learning (ML) techniques offer a promising alternative by learning the complex patterns directly from experimental data. The present thesis summarizes a comprehensive study on the prediction of steady-state, HD diesel engine emissions using ML models, along with a comparative analysis against conventional statistical modeling approaches.

A high-quality …

A Digital Calibration Source For 21 Cm Cosmology Telescopes, Kalyani Balkrishna Bhopi Jan 2026

A Digital Calibration Source For 21 Cm Cosmology Telescopes, Kalyani Balkrishna Bhopi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Precise calibration of radio telescope beams and gains is a central requirement for 21 cm intensity mapping experiments, which aim to measure large scale cosmological structure through the redshifted emission line of neutral hydrogen. Bright astrophysical foregrounds dominate the sky at these frequencies, and separating them from the cosmological signal demands precise control over instrumental systematics, particularly the telescope beam and its frequency-dependent response. Existing aerial calibration sources are incoherent broadband emitters, detectable only as total power. They provide no direct phase information and suffer from poor sensitivity in low signal-to-noise regimes.

We present the Precision Emitter for 21cm Array …

Microwave Calcination Techniques For Electrode And Electrolyte Powders In Fuel Cells, Logan Scott Proud

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This work investigates microwave-assisted calcination as a rapid, energy-efficient alternative to conventional resistive heating for the synthesis of complex oxide powders used in solid oxide electrochemical cells. Ce₀.₉Gd₀.₁O₁.₉₅ (GDC10) and La₀.₆Sr₀.₄Co₀.₂Fe₀.₈O₃–δ (LSCF6428) were synthesized via solid-state and co-precipitation routes to evaluate the influence of precursor chemistry and dielectric behavior on microwave coupling, reaction kinetics, and powder characteristics. Calcination was performed in single-mode and multimode microwave systems using a silicon carbide/alumina susceptor–insulation package to ensure controlled high-temperature processing. A parametric study examining ramp rate, sample size, and temperature revealed that microwave processing reduced calcination time to ~1 hour compared to >21 …

Simulation Optimization Of Intermodal Freight Transportation Under Disruptions, Israt Humayra Jan 2026

Simulation Optimization Of Intermodal Freight Transportation Under Disruptions, Israt Humayra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rapid growth in freight transportation in modern supply chains has led to increased operational costs, congestion, and severe environmental impacts, especially greenhouse gas emissions. Combining different modes, such as highway, railway, and waterway, intermodal transportation could thus offer considerable benefit to improve efficiency, sustainability, and resilience. However, most existing planning approaches rely on simplified assumptions, fixed schedules, and average cost estimates, making them less relevant to dealing with real-world uncertainties and disruptions. This study develops a simulation-optimization framework for intermodal freight transportation under disruption. We develop a mixed-integer programming model to represent an intermodal logistics planning framework on a multi-layered …

Public Perception Of Using Public Lands For Climate Change Mitigation, Casey Marie Zaitzew Jan 2026

Public Perception Of Using Public Lands For Climate Change Mitigation, Casey Marie Zaitzew

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Biological carbon sequestration provides a way to integrate carbon initiatives while meeting sustainable forestry management needs. In the United States, woody plants capture about 13% of annual carbon emissions, highlighting the importance of forests and other ecosystems in national climate strategies. With over 640 million acres of public land, management strategies that incorporate carbon sequestration could significantly influence national carbon storage. Because public lands are taxpayer-funded, public acceptance is critical in carbon-focused policies. While prior studies have examined public attitudes toward carbon capture and storage techniques, fewer studies have focused on biological sequestration within federally managed lands.

This study analyzes public …

Abstract
Hyperglycemia Detection from Single-Lead ECG using a Hybrid CNN & Transformer Model
Adam Ogunjembola

Diabetes Mellitus is known as high blood glucose. This high blood glucose level happens when the body has a problem with producing or using insulin. Insulin is a very important hormone that the pancreas makes to control how much glucose gets into the bloodstream and cells. Diabetes Mellitus has an effect on the body if it is not treated, such as damaging the blood vessels and nerves which can lead to stroke, kidney failure, heart attack and permanent loss of vision. Since people with diabetes …

Do You Walk On By? The Effects Of Donor Fatigue On Willingness To Donate, Shawn Michael Henry Jan 2026

Do You Walk On By? The Effects Of Donor Fatigue On Willingness To Donate, Shawn Michael Henry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Donation solicitation literature validates the successful usage of various solicitation tactics that lead to achieving set donation goals for their associated cause. Yet, while the financial success of “checkout charity” is well-documented, a significant gap remains regarding the impact of high-frequency solicitations on long-term consumer-brand relationship. This research addresses this gap. Over the span of three surveys, this study finds that donation request frequency overall erodes donation likelihood through donor fatigue when donation frequency changes (occasional vs. always). However, this relationship is moderated by the perceived consumer base, with a larger perceived consumer base exacerbating the “diffusion of responsibility.” Further, …

How Regulatory Focus Shapes Adjustment And Performance In The Return-To-Office Era: The Roles Of Change Appraisal, Perceived Organizational Support, And Psychological Safety, Karen Jean Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly transformed workplace norms and employee expectations, marking a notable shift towards remote work. As organizations increasingly encourage a return to physical offices, understanding employee adaptation during this transition has become essential. This dissertation leverages Regulatory Focus Theory to explore how employees' promotion and prevention focus influences their adjustment and performance upon re-entering traditional office settings.

A parallel mediation model is proposed, in which Change Appraisal, Perceived Organizational Support (POS), and Psychological Safety (PS) are identified as key mechanisms linking regulatory focus to employee outcomes. The findings may provide evidence that individuals who exhibit a …

Bi-Level Optimization Of Peer-To-Peer Trading In A Decentralized Energy Market, Marshal Miezah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Distributed power generation based on rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems integrated with battery storage emerges as a promising pathway for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and im- proving flexibility in modern power systems. This study develops a bi-level optimization model to examine how prosumers maximize profit through peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading with consumers and the grid, and how consumers minimize cost by leveraging P2P trading. The bi-level problem is reformulated as a single-level mixed-integer programming (MIP) model using Karush- Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions to improve tractability and preserve market-clearing behavior. For the model validation and case study development, prosumer and consumer data are …

                                                       ABSTRACT

Global Weak Solutions of Optical Variational Wave System

                                        Shahrazad Hamed Mahal Alnafie

The coupling of a variational wave equation with Maxwell’s equations gives rise to the optical variational wave system, a hyperbolic PDE system that models the director field of the nematic liquid crystals. This system presents unique analytical challenges that have not been addressed in the existing literature. In this dissertation, we study the one-dimensional case of this system.

We establish the global existence of conservative weak solutions to the associated Cauchy problem. The hyperbolic system is derived using the energy variational method. Through a sequence of suitable …

Three Essays In Cpi Bias And Health Economics, Auderta Amoako-Nuamah Jan 2026

Three Essays In Cpi Bias And Health Economics, Auderta Amoako-Nuamah

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The first essay estimates bias in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for elderly individuals in the United States using Engel curve methodology and household-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1999–2023). The analysis focuses on how well the CPI reflects changes in the cost of living for older Americans, with particular attention to differences by gender and marital status. Results show that from 1999–2011, the CPI overstated the increase in the cost of living for both elderly and non-elderly households. In contrast, from 1999–2023, the CPI understated cost increases, with the bias generally larger for non-elderly households. Within …

The Unitary Theorists' Appointments Clause Problems, Jed Handelsman Shugerman Jan 2026

The Unitary Theorists' Appointments Clause Problems, Jed Handelsman Shugerman

Faculty Scholarship

The unitary executive theorists’ recent retreat to the Appointments Clause as a basis for unconditional presidential removal power is contradicted by the text and by overwhelming originalist evidence.

It is a surprising argument for a power of presidential removal, because the text of the Appointments Clause plainly requires both the President and Senate to appoint. The noncommon sense reading, that the president alone appoints, and thus the president can remove, was not in any of the Trump Administration’s briefs, but it was in a single amicus brief, and it was picked up in oral argument and the mainstream media.

This …

The Missing Constitutional Law Of Executive Conditions, Nicole Huberfeld, Matthew B. Lawrence Jan 2026

The Missing Constitutional Law Of Executive Conditions, Nicole Huberfeld, Matthew B. Lawrence

Faculty Scholarship

This Article contributes to development of the constitutional law of executive conditions. Courts are wrestling with the constitutionality of federal efforts to encourage what the federal government cannot mandate—speech on particular subjects, participation in cooperative federalism programs, and so on—but have failed to appreciate an important distinction. Binding statutory conditions articulated by Congress or an executive branch delegee (statutory conditions) and non-binding executive conditions articulated by executive branch actors engaged in regulation by deal (executive conditions) are different in constitutionally salient ways that can and should inform the development of workable doctrine. Yet courts, advocates, and scholars have only begun …

The Power And Peril Of The Aca's Universality At Fifteen, Nicole Huberfeld Jan 2026

The Power And Peril Of The Aca's Universality At Fifteen, Nicole Huberfeld

Faculty Scholarship

As part of the symposium "15th Anniversary of the ACA: A Health Equity Review," this essay explores the ACA's mix of private law and public law provisions that rendered measurable improvements in health equity and health outcomes, especially for populations that experienced longstanding health disparities before its enactment.  Congress’s central objective was near-universal health insurance coverage, and the ACA employed a variety of mechanisms to reach that goal. The law’s health equity successes grew from establishing a principle of inclusion across federal statutes. This principle, which I have called “universality,” centered a human right to health approach: No longer would …

Obscurity And The Fallacy Of No Privacy In Public Information, Woodrow Hartzog Jan 2026

Obscurity And The Fallacy Of No Privacy In Public Information, Woodrow Hartzog

Faculty Scholarship

The main thesis of this chapter is that because there are so many different possible interpretations of ‘public information’, the concept cannot be used to justify data practices and surveillance without first articulating a more precise meaning that recognises what is at stake. By disposing of the myth that there is an objective and dispassionate concept of public information, judges and lawmakers can clear the way for information rules based on overt value choices. In short, if the concept of ‘public’ is going to shape people’s social and legal obligations, its meaning and neutrality should not be assumed.

My argument …

The Innocence Trap, Caitlin Glass, Julian Green Jan 2026

The Innocence Trap, Caitlin Glass, Julian Green

Faculty Scholarship

What makes a conviction wrongful? Developments in DNA science have led to a wave of exonerations over the past thirty years, revealing sources of error in the criminal legal process. Innocence organizations proliferated to represent people whose convictions could be overturned by newly discovered evidence. This is vital work for the individuals who are released and for the purpose of systemic change. At the same time, a focus on exonerations constructs a relatively narrow conception of wrongful convictions -- one that is synonymous with factual innocence.

Corporate Childrearing, Katharine B. Silbaugh Jan 2026

Corporate Childrearing, Katharine B. Silbaugh

Faculty Scholarship

With children influencing a trillion dollars in spending annually, corporations actively seek to shape children's identities in support of consumer culture and profit. Yet there are no scholarly treatments or theories of the legal relationship between children and corporations. Instead, scholars address individual industries such as food, social media, cosmetics, tobacco, or fashion, missing the structural role corporations play in children's identity formation. Family law evaluates child wellbeing interventions using a triangle to map the legal dynamics among child, parent, and state. This article adds corporations as fourth actors, reconceptualizing that triangle as a square. This square provides the first …
