This paper examines the self-representation of Japan at the 1939 New York World’s Fair through the country’s displays and gifts to the United States. American world’s fairs were events that many countries wanted to participate in, to showcase their innovation, industry, and culture. It was a place for them to enter the international stage and control their image of themselves to the rest of the world. Japan’s choice of displays varied at different points in history depending on what would best serve the country’s diplomatic interests. Strategic Insights

Biological threats present unique challenges to traditional deterrence models due to their dual-use nature, difficulties in attribution, and rapidly evolving scientific landscape. In this commentary, the authors argue that deterrence by denial, while essential, is insufficient on its own to address contemporary biothreats. They propose a broader framework that integrates deterrence by disruption and capability diminishment to interfere with and reduce adversaries’ ability to develop and employ biological weapons. This approach emphasizes coordinated efforts across scientific, technological, economic, intelligence, and policy domains, as well as collaboration with public health and international partners. SkyNavigator is a concept unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a fixed wing and lighter-than-air flight mode capability. The proposed air vehicle will fulfill a market need for airspace domain awareness for Level 3 and below UAV traffic by providing real-time radar data to clients via Starlink. The proposed design will leverage existing mobile hydrogen production technology to achieve sustained flight operations at high altitude without interfering with commercial airspace operations. Flow over a seal whisker-inspired undulated cylinder at swept back angles is computationally investigated, comparing the vortex shedding, forces, and wake characteristics to those of an equivalent smooth geometry. Numerous prior studies have demonstrated that undulated cylinders can reduce mean drag and unsteady lift oscillations; however, none have isolated the effects of the sweep angle resulting from whisker positioning in flow. Inspired by the active control seals exert over their whiskers while navigating and sensing in unsteady aquatic environments, this study investigates how such orientation influences the hydrodynamic performance of the geometry. Prof. David Forsythe was awarded the ORCA in 1982. He was born in North Carolina and earned a bachelor’s in political science from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. Next, he earned a master’s and doctorate in Politics from Princeton University in New Jersey. In 1973, he joined UNL as an associate professor of political science and was soon promoted to full professor. In 1993, he became chair of his department and received the Charles J. This thesis seeks to analyze the discursive field and technology of photography and its multi-faceted role in the oppression of colonized people under Western imperialism. Among the main collection highlights of many established state-run archival institutions are photographic records consisting of surveillance images, mugshots, and other visual media as representations of the political hegemony that is exerted over governed peoples. This Article argues that the appointment of prominent wellness and antivaccine figures to senior federal health positions marks the culmination of a long-running evolution in American health fraud—from nineteenth-century traveling medicine shows to the institutional capture of government health agencies. Drawing a direct lineage from patent medicine marketing to contemporary wellness conspiracism, this Article demonstrates how tactics perfected by early medicine show entrepreneurs—emotional manipulation, conspiratorial framing, anti-establishment positioning, and the exploitation of information asymmetries—have persisted across regulatory and technological shifts, ultimately achieving unprecedented political legitimacy.

This dissertation examines the seizure and acquisition of Egyptian antiquities by the French government between 1792 and 1822. During this period, the French government seized antiquities for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was to benefit the French people politically and financially and to support the French ideals of art and civilization. Egyptian antiquities were collected almost accidentally, as French armies confiscated the collections of the wealthy in Paris and the aristocratic collections in Italy. But the presence of the art prompted the curiosity of the French, which led to a greater interest in Egyptian antiquities. However, …

Musical settings of Walt Whitman’s poems have proliferated ever since the turn of the twentieth century. Many of these settings were by British composers reacting to the effects of World War I in Europe: the two settings of Whitman’s short poem “Reconciliation” (1865–66) discussed here are those by the Scottish-American composer and concert pianist Helen Hopekirk (1856–1945) and the English composer and poet Ivor Gurney (1890–1937). Taking Hahnemann in his entirety, as a paradigmatic example of a true homoeopath, as a sound basis for a proper understanding of Homoeopathy, the ``scientific-critical'' school of homoeopaths seems to miss one constitutive part of Homoeopathy: its spiritual embedment into a greater frame of thinking and feeling. In fact, the greatest successes of Homoeopathy, in terms of popularisation, institutionalisation and implementation into social and cultural practice, were achieved in countries and periods open towards spiritual dimensions. The Politics Of Exposure: How Local Israeli Violence Affects Palestinian Public Opinion, Noah Passey

International violence has been connected to domestic public opinion in a variety of ways. Most of the research on this topic focuses on large-scale events like war and ignores smaller events like airstrikes, border conflicts, and police action. This thesis examines small-scale, individual-level violence in Palestine and what impact this violence has on Palestinian public opinions. It uses data on Palestinian casualties to specifically examine the effects of violence perpetrated by Israel in the period 2000-2016—a period marked by frequent conflict short of all-out war. Through multilevel regression analysis, I find that this low-level violence does influence Palestinian public opinion, …
