Zero-Sum Empathy: The Supreme Court's 2025 Term Decisions On Gender Identity, Susan Etta Keller Oct 2026

Zero-Sum Empathy: The Supreme Court's 2025 Term Decisions On Gender Identity, Susan Etta Keller

ConLawNOW

This past term, the Supreme Court majority continued to follow a pattern of rendering transgender individuals essentially invisible in the cases that concern their rights. In last year’s United States v. Skrmetti, the transgender youth affected by the ban on transgender care were largely absent from the majority opinion holding that such bans discriminated on the basis of neither sex nor transgender status. This term, the majority continued a similar trend, deciding two cases on the emergency docket that ignored the lived experience of transgender individuals while significantly affecting them, and one case on the merits, West Virginia v. …

Local Customs And Traditions Of The Nubi Tribe, Imam Wicaksono, Sherif Sa'ad Algayyar, Ahmed Hassan Mohammad Hassan

Al-Arabi: Journal of Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language

The study reveals the local customs and traditions of the Nubi tribe in Egypt that still survive and exist amidst the onslaught of modernization and globalization. The study raises two important questions about What are the functions of the local customs and traditions of the Nubi tribe that have been preserved until now and what is the form of the relationship between the local traditions of the Nubi tribe between one element and another. The study uses Borislaw Malinowski's functionalism theory which raises the main concept that every element of culture has a function. The surviving culture fulfills human physiological …

A Neurological Perspective Of Phantom Limb Pain And Potential Treatment Through Bionic Prosthetics, Leo Chu, Falisha Johnson, Noorjhan Alam

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Phantom limb pain (PLP) represents a major post-amputation complication, exerting substantial effects on neural processing, rehabilitation, and quality of life in amputees. This review explores the neurological mechanisms behind PLP and the clinical implications of neuro-prosthetics. Paper 1 provided a case study utilizing several questionnaires to draw a negative link between extreme perceptions of PLP and mental health. Paper 2 reported the correlation between PLP and cortical rewiring. Functional MRI (fMRI) data from 30 amputees showed post-amputation reorganization of neuronal signaling in several brain regions: the somatosensory cortex, caudate nucleus, bilateral insula, and anterior cingulate cortex. The brain’s adjustment to …

When The Mas’ Done: The Limits Of Carnival In The Dragon Can’T Dance, Sasha Budesa Oct 2026

When The Mas’ Done: The Limits Of Carnival In The Dragon Can’T Dance, Sasha Budesa

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Earl Lovelace's The Dragon Can't Dance, Carnival is at once both a resistant cultural inheritance and a politically unstable form of rebellion. This essay argues that while Carnival gives the dispossessed people of Calvary Hill a language through which to assert their personhood, it ultimately misdirects revolutionary potential to temporary, ephemeral forms. Through Aldrick's dragon, Fisheye's steelband, and the failed revolt of the People's Liberation Army, Lovelace exposes the limits of resistance when it remains contained within a spectacle. Through Philo, Sylvia, and the changing people of the Corner, Lovelace further shows that symbolic rebellion is incompatible with …

Increasing Self-Efficacy To Assist Intimate Partner Violence Victims Using Staff-Directed, Rosanina Carlotta Ketchum Oct 2026

Increasing Self-Efficacy To Assist Intimate Partner Violence Victims Using Staff-Directed, Rosanina Carlotta Ketchum

Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a women’s health issue. IPV is underreported and a barrier to screening and referral service interventions is a lack of knowledge by health care workers. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental project was to determine if and to what extent the implementation of an evidence-based education session on IPV increased self-efficacy for addressing IPV and the frequency of documented IPV assessments and referrals by staff and volunteers working at a community health perinatal support ministry program in the Midwest. The theoretical frameworks for understanding the effect of IPV and how to increase self-efficacy were the …

“I’M A Biracial Person Who Looks White In A Black Man’S Rap Game”: Exploring Expressions Of Multiracialized Masculine Vulnerability In Logic’S “Everybody”, Matthew Oware Oct 2026

“I’M A Biracial Person Who Looks White In A Black Man’S Rap Game”: Exploring Expressions Of Multiracialized Masculine Vulnerability In Logic’S “Everybody”, Matthew Oware

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The field of Black vulnerability studies includes analyses of Black men rap artists’ sexual debut, romantic relationships, mental stress, self-medication, and suicidal thoughts. I expand this analysis to Black-white mixed-race men who express emotional vulnerability regarding their racial identities. Using a case study of the song “Everybody” by Logic—a Black and white, mixed-race man—I find that Logic expresses joy and pride in his Black and biracial identity. Similarly, I observe that he expresses anger and frustration toward those who question, dismiss, or degrade his Black and biracial identities, a pattern paralleled in research on multiracial individuals. By analyzing his radio …

Source Page Evaluation Of Local Rag Retrieval For Engineering Safety: Implications For Mechanical And Civil Engineering, Sherif Sorour, Areej El Mufti, Mohamed Nabawy, Anwar Sahbel Oct 2026

Source Page Evaluation Of Local Rag Retrieval For Engineering Safety: Implications For Mechanical And Civil Engineering, Sherif Sorour, Areej El Mufti, Mohamed Nabawy, Anwar Sahbel

Civil Engineering

Industrial safety question answering requires access to the exact source material that supports an answer, not merely a related document. This study evaluates the retrieval stage of a local retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system at the source page level. Eighteen documents on lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and personal protective equipment were prepared in raw, cleaned, and metadata-enriched forms. Best Matching 25 (BM25), latent semantic analysis (LSA), and reciprocal rank fusion (RRF) hybrid retrieval were tested on 54 questions: 36 answerable, 12 safety-related but unsupported, and 6 outside the covered topics. Raw BM25 achieved the highest mean reciprocal rank (0.492) and Hit@5 (0.722), …

Mitigating Nursing Student Stress Through Mindfulness Techniques, Mandy Mcguire Oct 2026

Mitigating Nursing Student Stress Through Mindfulness Techniques, Mandy Mcguire

Group: Northern Arizona University School of Nursing, DNP Doctoral Papers

Undergraduate nursing students experience high levels of academic and psychosocial stress, which can negatively impact learning and well-being. National and international evidence indicate that a large proportion of nursing students report elevated stres throughout their education. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to evaluate the effect of faculty-facilitated mindfulness techniques on undergraduate nursing students’ perceived stress over one academic semester. A repeated-measures approach was used, with students completing the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) at baseline (week 1), mid-semester (week 7), and post-intervention (week 14). Faculty shared brief mindfulness techniques, including guided breathing, guided imagery, and reflective …

Fines, Fees, And The Carceral Economic Conditions Of Public Education, Thalia González Oct 2026

Fines, Fees, And The Carceral Economic Conditions Of Public Education, Thalia González

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

In this Article, I apply an expanded concept of education carcerality to identify and analyze a largely unexamined modality of punitive economic governance—intra-system educational fines and fees. Distinguished from other forms of childhood financial sanctions, including the criminalization of ordinary child and adolescent behavior in schools through the use of municipal fines and fees, these carceral-penal practices are exclusively defined, imposed, and collected within school systems themselves. Drawing on original data from 101 publicly available policies governing the two largest school districts by student population in each state and the District of Columbia, this Article contributes to the literature with …

Deportation By Deception: Coerced Administrative Voluntary Departures And The Illusion Of Choice, Fonda Pham Oct 2026

Deportation By Deception: Coerced Administrative Voluntary Departures And The Illusion Of Choice, Fonda Pham

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

Administrative voluntary departure allows noncitizens facing removal to leave the United States by waiving their right to a hearing before an immigration judge. Although this process provides noncitizens with a quicker alternative to a lengthy removal hearing, the process is not always as “voluntary” as its name suggests. Over the past four decades, noncitizens have alleged that immigration officers threatened and intimidated them in order to obtain waivers of consent, including threats against family members, prolonged detention, and physical abuse. Although the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution states that all persons physically present in the U.S. must receive due process …

Digital Inclusion And Psychiatric Care For Adults Experiencing Homelessness: Barriers, Innovations, And Ethical Implications, Ramon A. Gambino Castanos Oct 2026

Digital Inclusion And Psychiatric Care For Adults Experiencing Homelessness: Barriers, Innovations, And Ethical Implications, Ramon A. Gambino Castanos

DNP and Student Works

Populations experiencing homelessness face disproportionately high rates of mental health illness, yet they remain among the most digitally excluded populations in current healthcare systems. As new digital health interventions like telehealth, mobile apps, and eHealth platforms become increasingly important to mental health care delivery, questions arise about their accessibility, feasibility, and ethical implications for unhoused individuals. This paper explores the intersection of digital inclusion and mental health care for adults experiencing homelessness, drawing on eight systematic reviews published between 2020 and 2025. The literature reveals significant barriers to digital access, including lack of devices, internet connectivity, digital literacy, and trust …

Supporting Best Practice Standards In Clinical Simulation Through Community Collaboration: An Exploration Of Impacts On Nursing Student Clinical Competency, Lindsay N. Dubois Oct 2026

Supporting Best Practice Standards In Clinical Simulation Through Community Collaboration: An Exploration Of Impacts On Nursing Student Clinical Competency, Lindsay N. Dubois

Dissertations

Authentic patient representation is essential for preparing nursing students to provide quality care. This need is significant for populations impacted by legislative restrictions to healthcare. Additionally, inconsistent approaches in clinical simulation can hinder teaching and learning of valuable content. Nurses have extensive experience in ethics and social justice advocacy to improve health outcomes. Community collaborations help nurses better support their patients and novice learner competency. In 2022, clinicians and faculty collaborated to improve gender-inclusive representation in undergraduate nursing curricula and to educate learners about local resources. This standardized patient experience, focused on the care of a transgender and non-binary identifying …

Integrating Ai In Lesson Planning: Critical Reflection And Thoughtful Implementation, Chris Wilcoxen, Amanda Steiner, Julie Bell Oct 2026

Integrating Ai In Lesson Planning: Critical Reflection And Thoughtful Implementation, Chris Wilcoxen, Amanda Steiner, Julie Bell

The Interdisciplinary Journal for Research on Pedagogy and Learning Design
Vol. 1, Issue 1.
Fall 2026

If generative AI can reduce the cognitive load associated with preliminary planning tasks, beginning teachers might gain space to develop their lessons and adapt instruction more quickly. This study employed a directed qualitative content analysis to examine how beginning teachers modify AI-generated lesson plans in ways that reflect pedagogical reasoning. Data collection occurred throughout the instructional cycle. Artifacts analyzed included 1) modified AI-generated lesson plans 2) recorded lesson implementation videos, 3) written or video reflections, and 4) open ended survey questions. The study yielded 88 qualitative artifacts and 26 open-ended responses. Findings indicate that while AI provides a useful baseline …

Book Review: Vigil: A Novel, Stephen Woodgeard Oct 2026

Book Review: Vigil: A Novel, Stephen Woodgeard

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

George Saunders’s Vigil is presented as a sharp, unsettling novel about climate ethics, corporate power, and the stories people use to excuse harm. The review argues that the book’s magical-real realist structure turns a dying oil executive’s final night into a moral reckoning, while also showing how family myth, corporate language, and public discourse shape denial. It also notes that the novel’s allegorical design can feel heavy-handed at times, but its central strength is its forceful critique of complicity and the difficulty of moral awakening.

Leading The Way: Dsws In Organizational And Social Work Leadership, Lisa A. Street, Rebecca S. Beeler Oct 2026

Leading The Way: Dsws In Organizational And Social Work Leadership, Lisa A. Street, Rebecca S. Beeler

Journal for Social Work Scholar-Practitioners

Social workers are often overlooked for positions in organizational leadership. Although social workers dominate the workforce in many human services organizations, leadership positions are commonly held by those with general management or other degrees. The lack of educational preparation and formal training in leadership and a lack of leadership presence in the field have been deemed a social work leadership crisis. Yet, social workers possess unique skillsets that can translate well into strong organizational leadership—if properly cultivated, promoted, and pursued. With the resurgence of the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree, now is a prime opportunity for more social workers …

Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan Oct 2026

Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan

Feminist Pedagogy

This teaching activity reviews key concepts in group processes and introduces students to Expectation States Theory (EST) and Status Characteristics Theory (SCT), two micro-sociological frameworks that explain how inequality of opportunity emerges in task-oriented small groups with consequences for unequal outcomes. The activity is built around a team-building exercise “Lost on the Moon” in which participants rank 15 survival items individually and then in small groups. We adapt this exercise by taking field notes on group interactions and drawing on these notes to facilitate a discussion in which students critically reflect on their interactions with one another. We close the …

"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener Oct 2026

"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

In Zadie Smith’s debut novel White Teeth (2000) she writes: ‘every moment happens twice: inside and outside, and they are two different histories.’ (p. 532) Although this notion related to the struggles of global majority people in Britain after decolonisation, I liken it to the concept of identity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) educators within further education, where their internal thoughts, feelings and reality are often in conflict with external norms, ideals and policies, all of which are geared towards heteronormativity and cisnormativity. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) argue that metaphors transcend rhetorical devices and are an essential …

The Concept Of Reason In Economics: Smith And Sen Versus Neo-Classicism, Kevin Quinn Oct 2026

The Concept Of Reason In Economics: Smith And Sen Versus Neo-Classicism, Kevin Quinn

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Economics, for the most part, has adopted and promoted an instrumental and internalist view of reasons, grounding reasons in preferences. Exceptions have been few and far between, but they include, significantly, Adam Smith and Amartya Sen. Sen's idea of "counter-preferential choice," adumbrated in his brilliant article, "Rational Fools," has had almost zero influence in the profession, alas. Smith's differences with Hume on practical reason have been ignored (by economists at any rate). The idea that one can have an external reason, a reason to act counter to one's preferences, has had no purchase in our discipline.

The Quest For An Independent Scotland: The Impact Of Culture, Economics, And International Relations Theory On Votes Of Self-Determination, Sam Rohrer, James Gilley, Nathan Price Oct 2026

The Quest For An Independent Scotland: The Impact Of Culture, Economics, And International Relations Theory On Votes Of Self-Determination, Sam Rohrer, James Gilley, Nathan Price

The Journal of Economics and Politics

In the contemporary world, the true locus of sovereignty is up for debate. The drive for Scottish independence from the United Kingdom, within the larger context of the European Union illustrates trends within this relocation of sovereignty. Traditional research focused primarily on the cultural and identity issues at play, as well as economic issues. This work broadens the scope by placing the independence struggle within a complex international context. The shift from a purely realist state system interpretation to that of a refereed Pacific Union illustrates when nationalist and separatist movements can find conditions that allow for a viable secessionist …

The Evolution Of Partisan Voting At The County Level In Georgia, Ohio, And Texas, 1990-2016, David R. Shock Oct 2026

The Evolution Of Partisan Voting At The County Level In Georgia, Ohio, And Texas, 1990-2016, David R. Shock

The Journal of Economics and Politics

This paper evaluates aggregate-level partisan change in presidential and midterm elections at the county level in Georgia, Ohio, and Texas. Specifically, this analysis focuses on how demographic, electoral, cultural, and economic variables affect the percentage of the electorate voting for the Democratic Party candidates for U.S. President and other statewide offices from 1990 through 2016. In addition, this study conducts sub-state regional analyses using U.S. Census Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) to assess the local nature of partisan change in the U.S. OLS regression and correlation coefficients, as well as difference of means test results indicate that increases in population density …

The Impact Of Presidential Field Offices In Ohio, 2008-2012, Colin D. Swearingen Oct 2026

The Impact Of Presidential Field Offices In Ohio, 2008-2012, Colin D. Swearingen

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Does a community’s proximity to a presidential field office impact presidential election results? Applying community-level data from the American Community Survey, we examine the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections in the battleground state of Ohio. Using spatial regression, we find that the number of Obama field offices within 10 miles significantly increased his share of the vote in 2012. While proximity to a McCain Victory Center statistically decreased a community’s Obama vote share, this result was not substantive. In 2012, a community’s proximity to a Romney field office did not influence the results. Proximity to an Obama field office also …
