Developing The North: The Matachewan Region Mines And Northern Development In Ontario, 1916-1954, Simon Baer Nov 2026

Developing The North: The Matachewan Region Mines And Northern Development In Ontario, 1916-1954, Simon Baer

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This article examines northern Ontario’s Matachewan mining district as a case study in the environmental consequences of twentieth‑century northern development. Centering on the Young‑Davidson and Matachewan Consolidated gold mines, it traces how provincial policies, low taxation, and permissive claim laws encouraged a rapid extension of Ontario’s extractive economy into the Canadian Shield. By juxtaposing the interwar political economy of “opening the North” with the long‑term impacts on land, water, and fish populations, the article argues that Ontario’s eagerness to promote northern mining produced a regime of de facto deregulation whose environmental costs only became fully visible decades after the initial …

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil is a repository for historical accounts of power, dispossession, and cultural continuity. This paper proposes the development of “reparative soil science,” a new paradigm that combines soil remediation with theories of environmental justice, decolonization, and multi-knowledge systems. We define it as an orientation within soil science that treats the discipline’s own concepts, classifications, and survey conventions as historical products, and that couples the biophysical repair of degraded soils with repair of the rights, relations, and forms of knowledge that colonial land regimes displaced. By analyzing examples from around the world, the paper shows how colonialism and postcolonial land governance …

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for the evaluation of the (relative) potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle. It is standardised under the ISO14040 and ISO14044 series. When conducted rigorously, LCA provides a quantitative framework for comparing environmental impact and can challenge or substantiate common assumptions regarding environmental performance of the system. However, it is essential that any reported results are read in combination with the defined goal and scope, as the choice of the system boundary and/or the allocation of burdens and other methodological choices can influence the outcome presented. This review will …

Inequities In Agency And Post-Surrogacy Impact On Surrogate Mothers In India, Sheela Suryanarayanan Dr., Sudarshan Saravanan Mr. Nov 2026

Inequities In Agency And Post-Surrogacy Impact On Surrogate Mothers In India, Sheela Suryanarayanan Dr., Sudarshan Saravanan Mr.

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

India became a global hub for commercial surrogacy because surrogate mothers had fewer rights over their own bodies and the child born, and had no agency in medical interventions during surrogacy, until the Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021 prohibited transnational and commercial surrogacy in India. Studies have found detrimental physical and emotional health impacts of surrogacy on surrogate mothers in several developing countries. Economic coercion limits the agency and bargaining capacity of surrogate mothers, leading to unjust surrogacy contracts. Mandatory retention at surrogate homes, separation from family, surveillance, social stigma, secrecy, and a disconnect from the intended parents and surrogacy children …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Parents and peers play an important role in adolescents' body image and embodiment. Messages girls receive about sex and puberty during these formative years can contribute to either positive embodiment or disrupted/disconnected embodiment. To better understand how these messages are constructed in adolescence, we conducted a comparative thematic analysis of self-reported, retrospective accounts of messages conveyed by parents and peers. We administered an online survey using Prolific, which included open-text questions that we analyzed for this study. Participants were 339 cisgender women aged 19 to 29 (M = 24.4, SD = 2.84). Participants identified as Asian/Pacific Islander (23.0%), Black (22.4%), …

Quality Reveals What Quantity Conceals: Deceptive Equity Patterns In Urban Green Space Distribution, Zheng Xian, Yoshiharu Suzuki, Kun Liu, Clive E. Sabel, Naoki Nakaya, Atsushi Hozawa, Tomoki Nakaya

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Equitable provision of urban green space depends on how green space exposure is measured, yet aggregate, quantity-focused metrics can mask disparities in quality. We introduce the concept of deceptive equity, in which apparent distributional fairness conceals substantive inequality, and test it across 344 postcode areas in Sendai, Japan. Across three dimensions — ecological (NDVI), perceptual (Green View Index) and service provision (accessible park count) — we paired a quantity indicator with a quality indicator. A quantity–quality divergence emerged in every dimension: wherever a quality indicator showed a significant socioeconomic gradient it favoured affluent areas, whereas the corresponding quantity indicators were …

Glomalin-Related Soil Protein In Colluvial Soils As A Proxy For Reconstructing Millenary Changes In Landscape And Soil Health, Axel Werner, Lourdes López-Merino, Joeri Kaal, Cruz Ferro-Vázquez, Oscar Serrano

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is an operationally defined soil organic matter pool that includes a heat shock protein linked to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) living in symbiosis with most vascular plants and plays a key role in soil health. However, the potential of GRSP as a palaeoecological proxy remains unexplored. We analysed the GRSP content in a North-western Iberian colluvial soil profile encompassing the last 14,000 years. We aimed to 1) identify whether GRSP is preserved, and 2) investigate whether GRSP could be used as a palaeoecological proxy after comparing its record with palynological and pedoanthracological records that account for …

Defense-To-Attack: Bypassing Weak Defenses Enables Stronger Jailbreaks In Vision-Language Models, Yunhan Zhao, Xiang Zheng, Yige Li, Xingjun Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite their superb capabilities, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have been shown to be vulnerable to jailbreak attacks. While recent jailbreaks have achieved notable progress, their effectiveness and efficiency can still be improved. In this work, we reveal an interesting phenomenon: incorporating weak defense cues into the attack pipeline can significantly enhance both the effectiveness and efficiency of jailbreaks on VLMs. Building on this insight, we propose Defense2Attack, a novel jailbreak method that bypasses the safety guardrails of VLMs by leveraging defensive patterns to guide jailbreak prompt construction. Specifically, Defense2Attack consists of three key components: (1) a visual optimizer that embeds universal …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a replicable data-mining pipeline for illustrative, scenario-conditioned corporate distress analysis under feature decoupling. The pipeline links Compustat financial statements with Sustainalytics ESG Risk Rating records for 2,144 U.S. non-financial public firms, constructs a standardized Transition Risk Index (TRI), estimates a contemporaneous accounting-distress classifier, and applies transparent transition-cost sensitivities. Distress is defined as annual operating income insufficient to cover annual interest expense; interest coverage itself is excluded from the predictors. The resulting model is not a forward default forecast or a regulatory probability-of-default model. On a held-out cross-sectional test set, the logistic specification obtains AUC 0.909, PR-AUC 0.822, and …

Making The Implicit Explicit For Multilingual Learners: A Language-Based Framework For Literacy Development, Luciana C. De Oliveira Oct 2026

Making The Implicit Explicit For Multilingual Learners: A Language-Based Framework For Literacy Development, Luciana C. De Oliveira

Journal of English Learner Education

Literacy is fundamentally an act of meaning-making that requires bridging micro-level linguistic choices with macro-level text structures across genres. Current literacy policies dominated by Science of Reading (SoR) mandates often overemphasize isolated, word-level foundational skills. This narrow focus creates a one-size-fits-all model that reduces reading to the level of individual words, not appropriate for multilingual learners (MLs) who require access to dense, specialized disciplinary discourse. This article proposes an intentional, language-based literacy framework designed to build high-challenge, high-support classrooms for MLs without lowering academic expectations. Integrating genre-based pedagogy through the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC) with the mode continuum, the …

Manifold Alignment And Dual Prediction-Based Adaptive Dynamic Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm, Xuezhi Yue, Chao Xiong, Yanshen Jiang, Zhaolu Guo, Hu Peng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address prediction failure, manifold topology distortion, and insufficient adaptability in environmental response and operator configuration in existing prediction-based algorithms for dynamic multi-objective optimization under complex nonlinear environments and small-sample settings, this paper proposes a manifold alignment and dual prediction-based adaptive dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, termed MADP-DMOEA. When the environment changes, the algorithm decomposes the decision-variable manifold into center and shape components, effectively aligns manifolds at adjacent time instants via bipartite optimal matching, and identifies environmental change severity using geometric displacement. A dual prediction model is developed, in which a GRNN performs center extrapolation under severe changes, while an …
