We report on the first measurement of angular correlations between high-energy pions and slow protons in electron-nucleus (eA) scattering, providing a new probe of how a nucleus responds to a fast-moving quark. The experiment employed the CLAS detector with a 5-GeV electron beam incident on deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets. For heavier nuclei, the pion-proton correlation function is more spread-out in azimuth than for lighter ones, and this effect is more pronounced in the πp channel than in earlier ππ studies. The proton-to-pion yield ratio likewise rises with nuclear mass, although the increase appears to saturate for …

K-Long Facility At Jlab, Moskov Amaryan

In this talk I present the outline of K-long Facility (KLF) at JLab [1]. It was approved by PAC48 in 2020 to run for 200 days of beamtime, equally divided between liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets, to measure dozens of hyperon states predicted by CQM and LQCD but not yet established. This facility also will allow to measure Kπ scattering in different channels to observe the so-called ᴷ scalar meson and measure its width and position with unprecedented accuracy. Finally, it will be shown that exotic baryons can be measured at this facility in formation reactions with a two-body final …

We present measurements of the total and differential cross sections for near-threshold 𝐽/ψ photoproduction obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results are based on data collected during the fall 2018 and spring 2019 running periods, using electron beams with energies of 10.6 and 10.2 GeV, respectively, scattered off a liquid-hydrogen target. Near-threshold J/ψ photoproduction offers a unique sensitivity to the strong interaction in the nonperturbative regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The energy dependence of the cross section constrains the underlying J/ψ production mechanisms, including multigluon exchange and potential baryonic excitations. Additionally, the t …

Shock-Wave Structure In A Monatomic Gas Mixture With Rydberg Atoms, Anna Markhotok
Physics Faculty Publications
The effect of atom size on the shock-wave structure in a binary monatomic gas mixture with Rydberg atoms has been investigated. The problem was solved numerically using the system of hydrodynamic equations in argon gas for the atom-size ratios between 2 and 100, T = 1500 K, and the density between 10¹⁷ and 10²⁰ m−³. It was found that the presence of larger-sized atoms in the mixture results in shock front splitting that is on the order of the mean free path for this component. The results could be of interest in supersonic plasma dynamics and in astrophysics, studying shock …

Measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering multiplicities for 𝜋⁺ and 𝜋⁻ from proton and deuteron targets are reported on a grid of hadron kinematic variables 𝑧, 𝑃𝑇, and 𝜙* for leptonic kinematic variables in the range 0.3< 𝑥< 0.6 and 3< 𝑄²< 5GeV². Data were acquired in 2018 and 2019 at Jefferson Lab Hall C with a 10.6 GeV electron beam impinging on 10-cm-long liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. Scattered electrons and charged pions were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer and Super High Momentum Spectrometer, respectively. The multiplicities were fitted for each bin in (𝑥,𝑄²,𝑧,𝑃𝑡) to extract the 𝜙*—independent 𝑀₀ and the azimuthal modulations ⟨cos(𝜙*)⟩ and ⟨cos(2𝜙*)⟩. The 𝑃𝑡 dependence of the 𝑀₀ results was found to be remarkably consistent for the four cases studied: 𝑒𝑝→𝑒𝜋+𝑋, 𝑒𝑝→𝑒𝜋−𝑋, 𝑒𝑑→𝑒𝜋+𝑋, 𝑒𝑑→𝑒𝜋−𝑋 over the range 0GeV< 𝑃𝑡< 0.4GeV, as were the multiplicities evaluated near 𝜙*=180∘ over the extended range 0GeV< 𝑃𝑡< 0.7GeV. The Gaussian widths of the 𝑃𝑡 dependence exhibit a quadratic increase with 𝑧. The cos(𝜙*) modulations were found to be consistent with zero for 𝜋⁺, in agreement with previous world data, while the 𝜋− moments were, in many cases, significantly greater than zero. The cos(2𝜙*) modulations …

Based on 334 pb-¹ of photoproduction data collected with the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab, we have measured for the first time the cross section of the exclusive reaction 𝛾 + p → φ(1020)π⁺π⁻p by reconstructing the final state K⁺K⁻π⁺π⁻p produced with a photon beam of energies between 8.0 and 11.6 GeV. Based on the measured differential cross section, we have performed a search for the strangeoniumlike exotic candidate Y(2175), recently renamed to φ(2170). This state has been reported by different e⁺e⁻ annihilation experiments and it is addressed here for the first time in a photoproduction experiment. We do not …

We present a perturbative method for constructing approximate invariants of motion directly from the equations of discrete-time symplectic systems. This framework offers a natural nonlinear extension of the classic Courant-Snyder (CS) theory for systems with 1 degree of freedom—a foundational cornerstone in accelerator physics now spanning seven decades and historically focused on linear phenomena. The original CS formalism emerged under conditions where nonlinearities were weak, design goals favored linear motion, and analytical tools—such as the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory—had not yet been fully developed. While various normal-form methods have been proposed to treat near-integrable dynamics, the approach introduced here stands out for …

We report on the measurements of the double-spin asymmetry from electron-³He scattering in the threshold region of two- and three-body breakup of ³He for 4-momentum transfer values of 0.1 and 0.2 (GeV/c)². The measurement was done at Jefferson Lab using a polarized ³He target with its spin aligned parallel to the beam direction. This asymmetry is sensitive to a combination of spin-dependent response functions not previously measured and may highlight differences in two body forces, meson-exchange currents and final-state interactions. The results of this measurement serve as a test of our understanding of few-body systems. When compared with …

Bayesian optimal experimental design (BOED) seeks to maximize the expected information gain (EIG) of experiments. This requires a likelihood estimate, which in many settings is intractable. Simulation-based inference (SBI) provides powerful tools for this regime. However, existing work explicitly connecting SBI and BOED is restricted to a single contrastive EIG bound. We show that the EIG admits multiple formulations which can directly leverage modern SBI density estimators, encompassing neural posterior, likelihood, and ratio estimation. Building on this perspective, we define a novel EIG estimator using neural likelihood estimation. Further, we identify optimization as a key bottleneck of gradient based EIG …

The GLUEX experiment at Jefferson Lab has observed p(p) over bar and, for the first time, ΛΛ over bar and p Λ over bar photoproduction from a proton target at photon energies up to 11.6 GeV. The angular distributions are forward peaked for all produced pairs, consistent with Regge-like t-channel exchange. Asymmetric wide-angle antibaryon distributions show the presence of additional processes. In a phenomenological model, we find consistency with a double-t-channel exchange process where antibaryons are created only at the middle vertex. The model matches all observed distributions with a small number of free parameters. In the hyperon channels, we …

Mechanically induced conformational switching at the single-molecule level represents a fundamental mechanism for molecular functionality, yet quantitative characterization of the underlying force and energy landscape remains limited. Here, we study individual TBrPP-Co(II) molecules on Au(111) using qPlus atomic force microscopy. By reconstructing interaction potentials from 3D Δf(x,y,z) data, we determine a threshold force of ∼96 ± 8 pN and a tip-induced switching interaction energy of ∼38 ± 4 meV associate with the conformational transition. The isolated tip-molecule force follows a power law (exponent ∼6), indicating dominance of long-range van der Waals interactions. …

One proposal to compute parton distributions from first principles is the large momentum effective theory (LaMET), which requires the Fourier transform of matrix elements computed nonperturbatively. Lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) provides calculations of these matrix elements over a finite range of Fourier harmonics that are often noisy or unreliable in the largest computed harmonics. It has been suggested that enforcing an exponential decay of the missing harmonics helps alleviate this issue. Using nonperturbative data, we show that the uncertainty introduced by this inverse problem in a realistic setup remains significant without very restrictive assumptions, and that the importance of the …

Within the framework of rapidity-only small-x TMD factorization, the evolution with respect to the rapidity cutoff is initially governed by Sudakov double logarithms and subsequently by BFKL/BK single logarithms. The evolution equation proposed in this paper correctly reproduces both the Sudakov and BFKL limits, while providing a consistent interpolation between these two regimes.

Electrons in matter can rearrange extremely quickly under external perturbations, underpinning subsequent structural and chemical transformations. Coulomb interactions between neighbouring electrons often shape this response, giving rise to correlated motion and strongly affecting the distribution of electrons in the system. Here we show that non-resonant hard X-ray scattering can directly access changes in the radial electron-pair density during the rapid rearrangement of core and valence electrons. We do this by studying sulfur hexafluoride molecules undergoing Auger–Meitner decay. We exploit a second-order interaction between the X-ray photons and the molecules to trigger and probe the decay dynamics with a single pulse, …

Modern atomic spectroscopy has reached a level of precision at which nuclear-structure effects can no longer be neglected and must be quantified reliably. In particular, hyperfine splittings depend on the Zemach radius, which encodes the convolution of the nuclear charge and magnetization distributions. The third electric Zemach moment provides a related finite-size measure and enters the elastic two-photon-exchange contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic atoms. Here, we compute Zemach radii and other electromagnetic moments for light nuclei using quantum Monte Carlo techniques within modern ab initio nuclear theory. Using Norfolk two- and three-body interactions derived within chiral effective field …

At Jefferson Lab, the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator (CEBAF) features a unique design with two linear accelerators and two arc sections allowing for multiple turns of the electron beam, as well as four experimental end stations. This topology leads to increased beam losses, especially in the spreader and recombiner regions connecting the arcs to the LINACs and in the extraction regions connecting the experimental end stations to the accelerator. These losses result in equipment activation and operational interruptions. Recent upgrades to the facility’s diagnostic systems, including the addition of xenon ion chambers, have provided higher-resolution data regarding these loss events. …

We demonstrate that multipoint Bayesian algorithm execution (multipointBAX) can overcome fundamental computational challenges in storage ring design optimization. Dynamic aperture and momentum aperture optimization is a multipoint, multiobjective design task for storage rings, ultimately informing the flux of x-ray sources and luminosity of colliders. Current production black-box optimization methods require extensive particle-tracking simulations for each trial configuration; the high computational cost restricts the extent of the search to ~ 10³ configurations and therefore limits the quality of the final design. We remove this bottleneck using multipointBAX, which selects, simulates, and models each trial configuration at the single-particle level. We demonstrate …

Introduction
Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID) is a form of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance, characterized by kidney injury caused by monoclonal immunoglobulin deposition in the glomeruli. While detectable clones are only found in 20–30% of PGNMID, plasma cell- or B-cell-targeting therapies are suggested to be effective. Recent case reports suggested immune dysregulation, such as viral infections or vaccinations, could potentially trigger the onset or relapse of PGNMID. Here, we report a case of PGNMID without detectable clones, which relapsed after viral enteritis, presenting with severe acute kidney injury (AKI) and nephrotic syndrome.

This study examined the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot counseling and face-to-face counseling on perceived stress, athlete burnout, and resilience among athletes. In this three-arm quasi-experimental pretest–posttest study, 73 athletes participated in AI chatbot counseling, face-to-face counseling, or a control condition over a 12-week intervention period. Nonparametric longitudinal analyses revealed significant group-by-time interactions. After adjustment for multiplicity, significant group-by-time interactions were observed for perceived stress and reduced sense of accomplishment, a sub-variable of athlete burnout. Perceived stress significantly decreased in the face-to-face counseling group, whereas reduced sense of accomplishment significantly decreased in the AI chatbot counseling group. For supportiveness, …

Most industrial programming languages leverage the English language for reserved keywords – words which a program compiler recognizes as specific execution commands. The divide between expert and novice programmers showcases an intriguing middle-ground by which the polysemy of many keywords becomes revealed. This essay explores a sampling of the multitude of keyword interpretations that a novice programmer may derive from the Java language’s syntactic style and keywords specifically, and how the polysemy of both “English” and “code” meanings to these terms affects the novice-expert programmer transition. The transition from novice to expert, and the mapping of the career of metaphor to …

Cisheterosexism in LGBTQIA+ Health Resource Guides Vanessa Kitzie, Amirezza Kalantari, Olivia Reed University of South Carolina, School of Information Science [email protected] Limited healthcare resources lead many LGBTQIA+ people to peer networks, often accessed via search engines to find community-created health resource websites [1–3]. Academic library guides benefit privileged LGBTQIA+ identities [4], but little is known about community guides, which may reinforce cisheterosexist narratives, causing stigma and stress [5, 6]. This study addresses this gap by scraping Google results for LGBTQIA+ health resources across US states, examining how cisheterosexism shapes health topics, geography, and representation of LGBTQIA+ populations. Background/Objectives: Food is Medicine (FIM) programs have been shown to be effective at addressing food and nutrition insecurity among individuals. However, more evidence is needed to determine effective interventions at the household level and their impact on child health outcomes. Feeding the Family is a randomized controlled trial which aims to determine whether the amount of food provided and the ability to select foods in FIM interventions have an incremental effect on child and caregiver clinical outcomes relative to nutrition counseling alone. The objective of this paper is to describe the population at baseline among those enrolled in Feeding the …
