On The Chekist Front: Little-Known Pages Of The Life Of Ivan Voronaev (Agent "Nepliuev"), Founder Of Soviet Pentecostalism, Oleksandr Korotaiev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The figure of Ivan Voronaev (1885-1937), founder of the Soviet Pentecostal movement, occupies a contested place in the history of Eastern European Protestantism. Confessional narratives portray him as an “apostle of the Slavs” and martyr of faith, while Soviet anti-sectarian literature depicted him as a “bourgeois agent” and conduit of foreign influence. Despite their opposition, both approaches largely ignore the Chekist dimension of Voronaev’s biography–his systematic interaction with the Soviet security services and his role in their operational activities as a covert agent.
This article reconstructs previously marginalized episodes of Voronaev’s life on the basis of operational, investigative, and reporting …

Religious Life In Western Ukrainian Lands From 1914 To 1918: The Situation Of Confessions Under Conditions Of War And Occupation, Oksana Markevych, Andrii V. Shevchuk Dr. Hist. Sc.
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This article examines the religious life in Western Ukrainian lands during the First World War, amidst military operations and changing occupational regimes. It establishes that the Russian occupational authorities applied mechanisms of confessional control, previously tested in other captured Ukrainian and Belarusian territories, aimed at the forced imposition of Orthodoxy and the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Church. Particular attention is paid to the scale of religious persecution: the deportation of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, the arrests of Greek Catholic priests, pogroms against the Jewish population, and mass deportations of Protestants. The phenomenon of mass displacement (refugee crisis) is explored as …

Disenchantment Of The World In The Context Of The Russian-Ukrainian War,, Olga Dobrodum, Eduard Martyniuk, Olena Nykytchenko, Mykola Palinchak, Ruslana Tkachenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes Max Weber's concept of the "disenchantment of the world" («Entzauberung der Welt») in the context of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, which began with Russia's invasion in February 2022 and continues to the present. The author examines disenchantment as a process of rationalization and desacralization of society, tracing its development from ancient origins (Epicurus) and monotheistic traditions to contemporary interpretations (Adorno and Horkheimer, Barthes, Baudrillard, Habermas, Taylor, Haraway, Latour). The paradoxical nature of the process is emphasized: secularization does not eliminate the sacred but transforms it into new forms—from commodity fetishism to digital eschatology and posthumanist animism.

Religious Situation In Ukraine: Main Trends And Prognostic Visions, Olena Predko, Denys Predko, Ihor Maksymenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The contemporary religious situation in Ukraine is characterized by the resilience of religious institutions despite the full-scale war and destruction of infrastructure, which demonstrates a high level of nominal religiosity and the social significance of religion. At the same time, a profound structural transformation of the Orthodox field is underway, reflecting processes of national identification, security, and the delegitimization of pro-Russian structures. In parallel, there is a shift in religiosity from a mobilizational to a reflective, individualized form, in which faith performs psychological, meaning-making, and symbolic functions rather than mere institutional affiliation. At the same time, the post-war period retains …

Deep Learning-Based High-Resolution Spectrogram Reconstruction For Robust Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Sabyasachi Biswas, Saifur Rahman Tushar, Md Ebtidaul Karim, Abdullah Alam Mamun, Mahathir Mohammad Bappy
Deep Learning-Based High-Resolution Spectrogram Reconstruction For Robust Bearing Fault Diagnosis, Sabyasachi Biswas, Saifur Rahman Tushar, Md Ebtidaul Karim, Abdullah Alam Mamun, Mahathir Mohammad Bappy
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Accurate and reliable bearing fault diagnosis is critical for the safe and efficient operation of rotating machinery. Conventional time–frequency (TF) analysis techniques, such as the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), are limited by their fixed window sizes and the inherent trade-off between time and frequency resolution, often leading to suboptimal fault representation under varying operating conditions. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a deep learning-based framework that reconstructs high-resolution, noise-robust TF representations directly from raw vibration signals. The proposed model integrates a denoising encoder with a learnable TF transformation network to adaptively capture fault related frequency patterns without manual parameter …
Decreasing Risk Factors For Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Using Nurse-Led Rounds And A Novel Icu Liberation Bundle, Jennifer Kepler, Kenneth Moller
Decreasing Risk Factors For Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Using Nurse-Led Rounds And A Novel Icu Liberation Bundle, Jennifer Kepler, Kenneth Moller
Publications 2026-present
Background: Critically ill patients are more likely to survive today than at any other time in history. As more patients recover from critical illnesses, however, many experience health impairments known as post-intensive care syndrome. The Society of Critical Care Medicine developed the ICU Liberation Bundle to decrease the risk of post-intensive care syndrome.
Problem: An audit of 100 patient charts identified complete ICU Liberation Bundle documentation in only 20% of eligible patient days, highlighting the need for increased consistency in bundle implementation. Since the ICU Liberation Bundle addresses modifiable post-intensive care syndrome risk factors, lack of consistency implementing bundle interventions …

Immigration Adjudication, Judicial Review, And The Uneven Incorporation Of Administrative Law Norms, John Harland Giammatteo
Immigration Adjudication, Judicial Review, And The Uneven Incorporation Of Administrative Law Norms, John Harland Giammatteo
Journal Articles
This article examines the interaction between immigration law and administrative law. Scholars and courts regularly treat immigration as outside of, or exceptional to, the normal operation of administrative law and its norms of judicial review. Yet in the past decade, the Roberts Court has radically reshaped administrative law. This broader administrative law project has largely emphasized the primacy of the federal courts and judicial review, enlarging the putative rights of regulated parties, at the cost of agency power. Within that project, immigration adjudication is a frequent conversation partner. Immigration adjudication is used to undermine the administrative state’s claim to policymaking …

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Faculty Publications
Background
Stillbirth at term is a major public-health concern. In high-income settings, the most commonly identifiable causes are unrecognised fetal growth restriction (about 14%) and placental abruption (about 12%), but 20 to 40% of term stillbirths remain unexplained. Whether modern machine learning can substantively improve prediction over established clinical risk-factor models is unresolved. Objective
To evaluate the predictive performance of three machine-learning models, elastic-net logistic regression, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting, for stillbirth at term in a population-based cohort, and to quantify the achievable ceiling using static registry variables.Study Design
Secondary analysis of 302,192 term pregnancies (322 stillbirths; …An Empirical Framework For Evaluating Semantic Preservation Using Hugging Face, Nan Jia, Anita Raja, Raffi Khatchadourian
An Empirical Framework For Evaluating Semantic Preservation Using Hugging Face, Nan Jia, Anita Raja, Raffi Khatchadourian
Publications and Research
As machine learning (ML) becomes an integral part of high-autonomy systems, it is critical to ensure the trustworthiness of learning-enabled software systems (LESS). Yet, the nondeterministic and run-time-defined semantics of ML complicate traditional software refactoring. We define semantic preservation in LESS as the property that optimizations of intelligent components do not alter the system's overall functional behavior. This paper introduces an empirical framework to evaluate semantic preservation in LESS by mining model evolution data from HuggingFace. We extract commit histories, $\textit{Model Cards}$, and performance metrics from a large number of models. To establish baselines, we conducted case studies in three …
Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair
Color-Blind Resilience: How Uniform Climate Standards Reproduce Environmental Inequality In The Rockaways, Aaryan M. Nair
Publications and Research
This paper examines how ostensibly uniform climate resilience standards can reproduce environmental inequality in socially uneven landscapes, using the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City as a critical case study. While flood-resistant building codes, zoning regulations, and insurance frameworks are designed to provide equal protection across flood-prone areas, this analysis argues that their “color-blind” application obscures and intensifies underlying disparities in financial capacity, housing conditions, and tenure. Drawing on environmental justice (EJ) theory, the paper identifies two key mechanisms through which inequality is reproduced. First, “code without capacity” demonstrates how uniform technical standards—such as elevation requirements under NYC Building Code …
All Games Have Equilibria, M. Ali Khan, Arthur Paul Pedersen, Maxwell B. Stinchcombe
All Games Have Equilibria, M. Ali Khan, Arthur Paul Pedersen, Maxwell B. Stinchcombe
Publications and Research
Research on Nash equilibrium existence for infinite games has grown into a patchwork of technical preconditions and counterexamples. This paper presents a unified program in equilibrium theory by revising the predominant model of mixed strategies based on countable additivity. A game is specified by a nonempty set of players and, for each player, a nonempty action set and a bounded von Neumann-Morgenstern utility function. Every such game is shown to admit a Nash equilibrium in finitely additive mixed strategies. In addition, the equilibrium correspondence for any such game is shown to be nonempty, compact-valued, and upper hemicontinuous, and the same …
