Healthy eating and regular exercise are things that many people aspire to, mainly for health reasons. However, these practices can be complex given broader societal discourses. This paper aims to critically interrogate the social conditions and discursive formations that underpin everyday exercisers’ relationships with food, the body, and physical activity by using biopower and biopedagogies as a theoretical approach, and healthism as a set of discourses. Photo elicitation interviews with vignettes were conducted with nine participants who were regular exercisers. We constructed three different scenarios from the interview data and the theoretical approach: 1. Anna: A performance-driven, health compliant, private …

Epigenetic changes, in particular DNA methylation, accumulate with age across different tissues, but whether these changes follow consistent patterns across different organs remains poorly understood. Here we show, through a meta-analysis of more than 15,000 human methylation profiles spanning 17 tissues, that aging produces both conserved and tissue-specific epigenetic signatures. We identify systemic shifts in methylation levels, increases in methylation variability, and growing molecular disorder across tissues. Network analysis revealed tightly connected gene clusters that are not modified by beneficial interventions, alongside a more modifiable cluster linked to NAD+ metabolism, supporting NAD+ as a potential therapeutic target in …

Numerical Investigation Of The Influence Of Fiber Content On The Shear Performance Of Uhpc Deep Beams Reinforced With Hybrid Steel And Synthetic Fibers, Hossein Mirzaaghabeik, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Nuha S. Mashaan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study investigates the shear performance of ultra-high-performance concrete deep beams (UHPC-DBs) reinforced with hybrid fibers comprising 5D steel fibers and Forta-Ferro (FF) synthetic fibers. UHPC-DBs are widely used in bridges, piles, and transfer girders because of their high load-bearing capacity. Although fiber content strongly influences shear behavior, the contribution of synthetic fibers in hybrid systems remains insufficiently understood. To address this gap, finite element analysis based on the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model was developed in ABAQUS and validated using experimental results from five previously tested UHPC-DBs with different fiber contents. Load–deflection response, crack patterns, shear capacity, mid-span deflection, …

This study addresses the critical challenge faced by organizations in selecting an optimal subgroup of decision-making units (DMUs). Such a selection procedure can significantly influence efficiency, profitability, and strategic development. Recognizing the limitations of existing methods in handling inexact data and incorporating managerial preferences, this study proposes a novel framework that integrates data envelopment analysis (DEA) with binary linear programming models. The model applies belief-degree–based representations of uncertainty to capture imprecise inputs and outputs. For this model, two solution approaches—namely, chance-constrained programming and expected value approaches—were developed. These approaches are suitable for real-world applications using standard optimization software. The effectiveness …

Most patients with End Stage Kidney Failure (ESKF) in Pakistan must undergo maintenance haemodialysis (HD) to survive. Session duration and the often lifelong nature of this treatment, along with other factors associated with HD, make it difficult to tolerate. This study took a positive psychological perspective and considered that HD sessions’ duration, which has been a major challenge for HD patients, can be turned to an opportunity for patients’ meaningful engagement. Such meaningful engagement can positively transform Pakistani patients’ experience of HD and extend into their lives outside HD. Twenty-four HD patients and six healthcare professionals were interviewed to explore …

Exercise is a promising strategy associated with improved cancer-related outcomes through multiple biological mechanisms. However, current exercise guidelines largely adopt a one-size-fits-all approach and overlook inter-individual variability in response. Given the heterogeneity of breast cancer, precision exercise prescriptions may better target biological pathways linked to therapeutic efficacy and long-term prognosis. Observational studies consistently show that higher physical activity levels are associated with improved survival outcomes, including reduced all-cause and breast cancer-specific mortality. In contrast, evidence from interventional trials remains limited and inconsistent, with effects on tumour response and survival largely derived from secondary or exploratory analyses. These discrepancies likely reflect …

The number of private secondary schools that cater to international students is increasing rapidly, especially in the Canadian city of Toronto. Previous studies about international students in public schools have uncovered several concerns, but little is known about these largely unregulated, for-profit private schools. We had created a dataset of all private secondary schools in Toronto (n = 370), and in the process noticed a high volume of schools explicitly targeting international students (n = 174). Thus, a qualitative document analysis of the websites of schools was conducted to explore this market further. Our final analysis uncovered 138 ‘schools of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
To accommodate population growth, Australian cities are becoming denser, with more Australians living in apartments. However, there is little understanding of whether this shift towards apartment living raises any potential short- and long-term implications for dietary health. Using an Australian nationally representative household survey, this cross-sectional study compared meal-purchasing frequency and fruit and vegetable intake by dwelling type, apartment block height, and number of bedrooms in the apartment. Adjusted mean differences were derived from linear regressions, adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics. Apartment residents purchased 0.72 more meals out each week than house residents (p < 0.001, 95% CI [0.599,0.831]) and consumed 0.10 fewer daily serves of vegetables (p = 0.002, 95% CI [0.038,0.163]). Among apartment residents, those in high-rise blocks purchased 0.80 more meals out each week than low-rise residents (p = 0.012, 95% CI [0.250,1.348]), and residents of one-bedroom or studio apartments ate 0.25 fewer serves of fruit per day than residents in apartments with at least three bedrooms (p = 0.003, 95% CI [0.038,0.163]). These findings provide important evidence to inform policy and targeted interventions that promote healthy food behaviours in apartment-living populations.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Measurements are considered to be the basis of exposure assessments used to determine risks to workers. Inhalation exposure poses the greatest risk for most airborne chemicals, and measurements are based on collecting (sampling) and analyzing air samples. Samplers have been developed for more than 120 years. Each new design has been intended to address flaws perceived in earlier designs. Users are faced with a varied array of samplers from which to choose. Comparisons are difficult to make because tests of sampler performance were not standardized until recently and have not been applied consistently. The existing large body of work does …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
International leisure travel is deemed therapeutic for reducing stress and improving mental health and wellbeing, although unfamiliar environments can exacerbate pre-existing mental health conditions. Travel insurance plays a crucial role in mitigating risks for travellers. There is a lack of critical evaluation regarding how insurers assess risk, determine coverage eligibility and communicate exclusions. International travel insurance policies may contain restrictive clauses, ambiguous wording and outright exclusions that may disproportionately disadvantage travellers with pre-existing conditions, including mental health conditions. This paper evaluates whether New Zealand’s international travel insurance policies adequately accommodate travellers with pre-existing mental health conditions. Analysis of 23 international …

Background: Vancomycin is first-line treatment for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, despite guideline recommendations, there is no evidence that targeting vancomycin trough concentrations of ≥15 mg/L in children confers clinical benefit and is associated with vancomycin-associated nephrotoxicity (VAN). Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a vancomycin safety bundle on VAN and vancomycin utilisation in hospitalised paediatric inpatients. Method: A pre–post-intervention study was conducted in a tertiary paediatric hospital comparing January–December 2018 (pre-intervention) to May 2019–April 2020 (post-intervention). Hospitalised children, aged 30 days to <18 years, that received intravenous vancomycin with at least one trough concentration were included. The intervention bundle comprised: (1) lowered empiric vancomycin trough targets (5–15 mg/L), (2) enhanced creatinine monitoring (concomitant serum creatinine with vancomycin trough), (3) guideline modification (reduced pre-authorised indications for empiric vancomycin use), and (4) prescriber education initiatives. Ethical approval was granted by the WA Child and Adolescent Health Service Research Ethics Committee, Governance Evidence Knowledge Outcomes Program (Reference no: 41830) and the study conforms with the National Health and Medical Research Council's Ethical considerations in quality assistance and evaluation activities. Results: A total of 314 vancomycin prescriptions were analysed (n = 204 pre-intervention; n = 110 post-intervention). Post-intervention, VAN incidence decreased almost twofold from 0.46 to 0.25 episodes per 1000 patient bed days (p ≤ 0.01), and vancomycin prescription days decreased by 19%. Total hospital drug costs for vancomycin decreased by AUD $16 033. Overall, and for paediatric invasive MRSA, no significant difference in clinical outcomes or 30-day mortality was observed between study periods. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the implementation of a vancomycin safety bundle significantly reduced paediatric VAN and vancomycin utilisation without compromising clinical outcomes. These data support antimicrobial stewardship interventions to improve medication safety for children.

Residents have a profound and enduring impact on destination environmental sustainability, yet the emotional and trait-level factors of their pro-environmental behavior remain underexplored. Grounded in Broaden-and-Build theory, this study examines whether and how dispositional awe translates into Tibetan residents’ pro-environmental behavior intention. Through four complementary studies combining in-depth interviews (N = 15) and surveys (total N = 800), we demonstrate a consistently strong association between dispositional awe and pro-environmental behavior intention. Two survey-based studies incorporating both self-reported pro-environmental behavior intention and peer-reported pro-environmental behavior reveal that this relationship is partially mediated by connectedness to nature and place identity. By shifting …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In the digital age, while hospitality and tourism (H&T) firms accelerate digital transformation to stay competitive, the role of tourism trade associations as external resource providers in these firms’ digital transformation process remains underexplored. Drawing on resource-based theory (RBT), this study examines how tourism trade associations influence H&T firms’ digital transformation and explores the moderating effects of marketization and business climate. Using 2,049 firm-year observations of 144 publicly listed H&T firms (2009–2022), this study finds evidence suggesting that tourism trade associations facilitate digital transformation. Crucially, we find that marketization and business climate negatively moderate this relationship, indicating a substitution effect …

While the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among university students varies depending on the population studied, it has been estimated at approximately 16%. University students with ADHD may find that the condition affects their academic performance, social interactions, and well-being. This meta-ethnographic review synthesizes findings from 25 qualitative studies to explore the lived experiences of university students with ADHD. The studies, published between 2000 and 2023, were predominantly conducted in the United States with sample sizes ranging from 4 to 135 students. Students came from a broad range of academic disciplines and included undergraduates, recent graduates, and attendees …

Tour Guide Sincerity In The Context Of Short Videos, Yangdie Ou, Chaowu Xie, Jiangchi Zhang, Songshan (Sam) Huang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In short videos, tour guides’ demonstration of sincerity is key to enhancing visitor interaction, though its underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. This study employed a mixed research design to uncover the dimensions of tour guide sincerity and its impact on tourist behaviors. Study 1 analyzed 28,717 reviews using grounded theory, identifying two core dimensions of tour guide sincerity: “sincere atmosphere” and “sincere quality”; it further constructed the “tour guide sincerity → sincerity experience → sincerity response” model. Study 2 validated this model using structural equation modeling through an online questionnaire survey. Results indicate that tour guide sincerity enhances word-of-mouth recommendations via …

The species incorrectly referred to as Tropidophora spec. by Gittenberger et al. (2017, A field guide to the common molluscs of Bhutan: 42, fig. 27) is identified as Lagocheilus tomotrema (Benson, 1857). It is known from southern Bhutan, below 2000 m a.s.l. In fresh specimens the periostracum bears spiny or flattened, hitherto overlooked, stalked protrusions. Two species of Veronicellidae are reported as new for Bhutan. One of these was identified by a dna analysis as the pest species Laevicaulis alte. The second species could not be identified. Curvella sikkimensis is reported as new for Bhutan, where it was recorded in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives: To evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy and concordance of swab cultures and tissue biopsy for identifying causative pathogens. Furthermore, to compare the sensitivity, specificity and overall diagnostic performance of swab cultures and tissue biopsies, using tissue biopsy as the reference standard in infected diabetic foot wounds.
Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis using CINAHL, Embase and PubMed for published studies from inception to April 2025. Eligible studies compared the diagnostic accuracy or the list of pathogens of swab cultures and tissue biopsy in adult patients diagnosed with diabetic foot infections. A random-effects diagnostic accuracy meta-analysis was …
