Efficacy And Engagement In Digital Acceptance And Commitment Therapy: A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Mechanisms, Korena S. Klimczak Dec 2026

Efficacy And Engagement In Digital Acceptance And Commitment Therapy: A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Mechanisms, Korena S. Klimczak

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Digital mental health interventions offer a more accessible, affordable, and flexible option for mental health support. These apps and websites draw from the same therapeutic models as face-to-face therapy, but are available on demand at a fraction of the cost. In exchange, digital formats give up the personal relationship, accountability, and scheduled structure that keep people connected to treatment. This places a greater burden on users to stay involved on their own, and as a result, engagement is widely believed to be the main bottleneck limiting the impact of digital mental health care.

This dissertation examined engagement in digital programs …

Ai-Driven Collision Risk Prediction And Debris Optimization In Low Earth Orbit, Emad Alkhazraji, Mohamed E. Yahia, R. E. Tolba, N. S. Alharthi

All Works

Debris congestion and collision in low Earth orbit have become a major point of concern due to the rapid expansion of activities in that region. In this work, an AI-driven framework is developed and deployed to predict, analyze, and optimize collision risk across the altitude inclination space. Local debris object population, mass density distribution, and conjunction derived risk are computed. Then, an AI surrogate model, viz., gradient-boosted decision trees, was trained to predict collision conjunction relative probabilities and risk. Thereafter, data analysis and explain ability techniques are utilized to uncover underlying risk drivers and reveal how altitude, inclination, mass loading, …

This review synthesizes current evidence on the relationship between natural ecosystems and mental health outcomes with a particular focus on arid and rapidly urbanizing contexts such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It introduces the Multi-Ecosystem Therapeutic Framework for Arid Urban Environments, which moves beyond generalized "nature exposure" models by systematically linking distinct environmental systems to mental health outcomes through identifiable psychological, physiological and social mechanisms. The framework is structured around three interconnected components: ecosystem types (urban green spaces, desert landscapes, mountain environments and blue spaces), mediating mechanisms (including psychological restoration, stress reduction, physical activity and social interaction) and mental …

The proliferation of edge computing in industrial and IoT networks necessitates expert systems that support accurate, interpretable, and resource-efficient intrusion detection under strict privacy and computational constraints. This paper presents HED-ID, a fully integrated federated expert system designed for real-time, edge-oriented anomaly detection. The system combines: (i) a stacked bidirectional GRU (BiGRU) architecture with hybrid temporal–spatial attention for sequential and feature-level anomaly modeling, (ii) a resource-adaptive Grey Wolf Optimizer (A-GWO) that modulates exploration–exploitation behavior based on real-time CPU utilization and Bayesian epistemic uncertainty, with formal convergence proof under bounded resource shifts (Appendix A), (iii) federated SHAP, which aggregates local explanations …

Fine-Tuning Large Language Models For Binary And Multiclass Target-Specific Hate Speech Detection, Sanaa Kaddoura, Sumaia Al-Kohlani Dec 2026

Fine-Tuning Large Language Models For Binary And Multiclass Target-Specific Hate Speech Detection, Sanaa Kaddoura, Sumaia Al-Kohlani

All Works

Social media platforms are widely used by individuals from diverse demographic backgrounds to share their opinions and daily experiences. The anonymity provided by these platforms has increased the prevalence of hate speech, causing significant psychological harm to targeted groups. Existing hate speech detection approaches predominantly rely on binary classification, which fails to capture the lexical and contextual diversity of hate categories, leading to the misclassification of hate against minority groups. This study addresses this limitation by evaluating the effectiveness of five large language models (LLMs) for target-specific multiclass hate speech detection across six classes. The evaluation uses a dataset of …

Reducing Water Absorption Of Cement Mortar By Using Modified Clay Brick Waste, Nuntaporn Kongkajun, Somyote Kongkarat, Wannasa Phukutnam, Warittha Sujaritpanich, Edward A. Laitila, Parinya Chakartnarodom

Michigan Tech Publications

Cement mortar is inherently hydrophilic due to its porous structure, which allows water penetration and adversely affects its durability and long-term performance. To mitigate this issue, hydrophobic cementitious materials can be developed by incorporating hydrophobic substances during mixing to provide hydrophobic properties throughout the material, achieved by introducing a wet chemical method using stearic acid-modified clay brick waste (MCBW) as a hydrophobic agent. The MCBW is prepared by treating clay brick waste with stearic acid (SA) and subsequently used as a partial replacement for fine aggregates. The effects of the MCBW incorporation on compressive strength and water resistance are investigated. …

The Economics Of Modern Basketball Fandom, Holden Velasco

Capstones

In an increasingly money-sucking economy, many Americans are feeling the aching of their wallets. Basketball, once serving as an escape from the outside world, has now turned into a money-making machine where fans are paying to keep it running. It’s inescapable, whether it’s the rising costs to watch the professionals, forking thousands of dollars for children to play or sports gambling being plastered everywhere. Basketball no longer feels like basketball.

Analysis Of U.S. Army Body Composition Policies: Implementation Effectiveness And Recommendations For Policy Enhancement At Brooke Army Medical Center, Michael L. Rizzo

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

US Army body composition policies (AR 600-9 and recent directives) are essential for military readiness, injury prevention, and force health protection, yet implementation gaps persist, particularly with the 2026 Department of Defense (DoD)-mandated waist-to-height ratio (WHtR < 0.55) transition. This DNP project evaluated policy implementation effectiveness at Brooke Army Medical Center using the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Logic Model and CFIR 2.0 framework. Analysis of 2022–2025 de-identified administrative data and 16 stakeholder questionnaires identified ≥10 implementation gaps, including low awareness of new standards and workload impacts. The project developed 8 evidence-based recommendations and an implementation roadmap to improve compliance, optimize resources, reduce administrative burden, and strengthen military readiness.

Revisiting Ulam Stability For Boundary Value Problems, Martin Bohner, Snezhana Hristova, Agnieszka B. Malinowska, Ewa Girejko

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The main goal of this paper is to apply Ulam stability theory to boundary value problems for dynamic equations, while addressing several common misconceptions found in the existing literature. We identify the key issues that arise when applying Ulam stability to such problems and propose three distinct approaches to overcome them. To enhance clarity and accessibility, we begin with nonlinear ordinary differential equations and subsequently extend the analysis to nonlinear dynamic equations on time scales. Since a time scale is defined as any nonempty closed subset of the real numbers, our results are applicable to dynamic equations on continuous, discrete, …

Implementing Updated Npo Guidelines For Inpatient Procedures, Yasamin Ghanivand Dec 2026

Implementing Updated Npo Guidelines For Inpatient Procedures, Yasamin Ghanivand

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: Nil per os (NPO) guidelines are utilized for patient safety during procedures to reduce the risk of pulmonary aspiration. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) recommends clear liquids up to 2 hours before non-emergent procedures, although many facilities still implement the outdated practice of ordering NPO after midnight. This practice can lead to prolonged fasting, which may cause increased hunger, thirst, hypotension, nausea, and dizziness, ultimately resulting in patient dissatisfaction and discomfort.

Purpose: To review and assess current ASA NPO guidelines that describe best practice to enhance the patient experience without increasing perioperative risk of pulmonary aspiration.

Methods: A …

Wildfire And Fuel Treatments In Utah: A Practical Guide And Outcomes From An Oak-Maple Ecosystem, Annie E. Prescott Dec 2026

Wildfire And Fuel Treatments In Utah: A Practical Guide And Outcomes From An Oak-Maple Ecosystem, Annie E. Prescott

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Wildfire is a natural part of Utah’s landscapes, but as wildfires become more extreme and communities continue to expand into wildland areas, it is increasingly important to understand how wildfires behave and how their negative effects can be mitigated. One way to reduce wildfire risks and protect life, property, and ecosystem services is through fuel treatments — actions that reduce the amount and arrangement of flammable vegetation through mechanical removal, wildland fire, or other methods.

Information on wildfire behavior and fuel treatments is abundant but often scattered, ecosystem-specific and difficult to access. In addition, most research in the Western U.S. …

The Effects Of Eps Level And Presentation Format Of Analysts’ Forecast Deviation On Non-Professional Investors’ Investment Judgments, Clarence Goh, Prasart Jongjaroenkamol, Poh-Sun Seow Dec 2026

The Effects Of Eps Level And Presentation Format Of Analysts’ Forecast Deviation On Non-Professional Investors’ Investment Judgments, Clarence Goh, Prasart Jongjaroenkamol, Poh-Sun Seow

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We experimentally investigate how the presentation format of the extent to which a firm's earnings per share (EPS) diverges from analysts' EPS forecasts (i.e. deviation information) and a firm's EPS level affect the investment judgments of non-professional investors (referred to hereafter as “investors”). Our results suggest that investors' investment judgments are more positive when firms with low (high) EPS levels disclose deviation information in percentage (absolute) terms. Furthermore, when the percentage of forecast deviation is held constant, investment judgments are more positive when EPS levels are high versus low if the deviation information is expressed in absolute terms. By contrast, …

Scalable And Interpretable Fraud Detection In Fintech: Evidence From A Hybrid Tabnet–Graph Neural Network Framework, Haseeb Ahmad, Istiaque Bhuiyan, Tanvir Bhuiyan, Ariful Hoque

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study proposes a fraud detection framework for FinTech that integrates tabular deep learning with relational graph reasoning. We address a key limitation of state-of-the-art tabular fraud models: their assumption that transactions are independent, despite evidence that modern fraud often arises from coordinated infrastructure reuse (e.g., shared devices, email domains, accounts, and addresses). Using the IEEE-CIS Fraud Detection dataset (≈590,540 e-commerce transactions), we develop a hybrid architecture that combines TabNet, chosen for its built-in interpretability on tabular data, with a GraphSAGE encoder trained on a leakage-free heterogeneous entity graph constructed strictly from historical training transactions. Unseen entities in validation and …

Ethiopia is the largest wheat producer in sub-Saharan Africa, yet national food security efforts are constrained by coarse administrative level yield data that lack spatial and temporal detail. To bridge this gap, we present a spatio-temporally explicit assessment of rainfed wheat productivity, stability, and trends across Ethiopia from 2016 to 2023 using a multi-scale, data-driven framework. We integrated Sentinel-1-and Sentinel-2-derived biophysical, biochemical, physiological, phenological, and structural metrics as proxies for the integrated effects of genotype, environmental, and management factors (G × E × M) on wheat yield. These metrics were modeled using an ensemble machine learning approach to estimate wheat …

Optimizing Inventory Management, William Hawkins Dec 2026

Optimizing Inventory Management, William Hawkins

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses

Inventory management is extremely important for businesses to maximize their profitability. Many factors go into the decision-making process for how much inventory to hold and when to restock this inventory. Through the process of an internship, I determined that some of the most important factors were the amount of a part that needed to be ordered at a time and what order quantities would allow for high levels of customer satisfaction. In this research, I compared these factors between the different models I studied, and the data I received from Riggs CAT to determine whether or not maximum efficiency and …

Pieces Solving A Puzzle: Emerging Roles And Cross-Field Analogies During A Distributed Epistemic Game, Jenna Matthews

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

In an effort to describe why some problems can’t be solved, a character compared them to a cubic meter of platinum - a block so dense that all the people who could squeeze around it still couldn’t lift it off the ground. In the same way, these problems simply can’t have enough people gathered around and communicating about them - and so they remain unsolved.

This research looks at the first Polymath Project (2009) as an example of a distributed epistemic game to examine how groups engage with complex problems. and without a locally omniscient individual. In this setting of …

In this study, we use sentiment analysis to assess customer sentiment towards five leading automobile brands, analyzing text content shared on Twitter(or X). The research models the ’Brand Polarity Score’, which indicates whether customers perceive the brand positively or negatively. This score is further weighted based on the tweet’s influence, characterized by the engagement metrics of the tweet and the author’s follower count. We also …

The Airport And The City: Toward A Philosophy Of The Aerotropolis, Shane Ray Epting Dec 2026

The Airport And The City: Toward A Philosophy Of The Aerotropolis, Shane Ray Epting

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

As a city centered on its airport's vast influence, the aerotropolis's existence has an inherent tension: It is a stable city for people to stay put and dwell, with the notion of leaving at the foreground of urban life. As a conception, the aerotropolis requires investigation to reveal its significance for humankind and its place in an ontology of cities. When the aerotropolis is situated in such a manner, we see how it differs significantly from other kinds of cities throughout history that depend on travel, such as river and port cities. After unpacking these points, a view emerges illustrating …

Will Your Ai Turn Backers Away? Evidence From Kickstarter's Ai-Use Disclosure Policy, Sonika Singhal, Yeongin Kim, Seonjun Kang, Victoria Yoon

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping how creative work is produced, raising new questions about authenticity, originality, and human effort in entrepreneurial settings. We examine how platform-mandated AI-use disclosure is associated with crowdfunding outcomes, using Kickstarter's 2023 disclosure policy and a dataset of over 63,000 campaigns launched between 2022 and 2024. Drawing on signaling theory, we argue that an AI-use label functions as a platform-governed cue that backers may interpret as signaling reduced human effort, potentially shaping how they evaluate creators and campaigns. Empirically, we find that AI-use disclosure is associated with a significantly lower likelihood of campaign success, with …

A Projector-Rank Partition Theorem For Exact Degrees Of Freedom In Experimental Design, K. G. Nagananda Dec 2026

A Projector-Rank Partition Theorem For Exact Degrees Of Freedom In Experimental Design, K. G. Nagananda

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In many experimental designs—split-plots, blocked or nested layouts, fractional factorials, and studies with missing or unequal replication—standard ANOVA procedures no longer tell us exactly how many independent pieces of information each effect truly contributes. We provide a general degrees of freedom (df) partition theorem that resolves this ambiguity. For N observations, we show that the total information in the data (i.e., N −1 df) can be split exactly across experimental effects and randomization strata by projecting the data onto each stratum and counting the df each effect contributes there. This yields integer df—not approximations—for any mix of fixed and random …

This study examined how different types of teacher feedback (i.e., expressed pride, expressed disappointment, and near-neutral feedback) impact students’ motivation to learn and self-esteem. It also explored whether such effects vary depending on students' personality and how connected they feel to their teacher. Undergraduate students (N = 221) imagined receiving feedback from a teacher and completed surveys assessing their motivation, self-esteem, sociotropy, and connectedness with the teacher. The results showed that feedback expressing disappointment lowered students' self esteem compared to expressing pride and lowered students' motivation compared to near neutral feedback. Although sociotropy (i.e., dependence on others' approval) and teacher …
