Strike And Error: Assessing The Skill Level Of Crafters Using Lithic Blade Cores, Charles Roelant

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to ascertain whether or not the skill level of crafters can be assessed by the errors visible on the Hopewell cores used to make stone blades. This assessment was carried out using four points of focus; core shape, blade length, stepping mistakes and termination errors. This assessment was carried out on twenty-nine cores from the Crane site and nineteen cores from Mound house. Total error rates were used to assign cores to three different skill levels, experienced, intermediate, and novice. The assessment of these blade cores illustrates that skill can be observed, and that …

Tensions And Possibilities: A Study Of International Graduate Students' Encounters With Critical Pedagogy In The United States, Munchuree Kaosayapandhu

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the question, “How do international graduate students experience and negotiate their encounters with critical pedagogy across time and educational contexts?” The research was motivated by the researcher’s own experience in encountering critical pedagogy and prior studies focusing on critical pedagogy from the teacher perspective. This left a gap in understanding the student experience. The research used the phenomenology paradigm. The participants included six international graduate students in education studies programs. Using the phenomenological interview approach, each participant was asked over a series of three interviews about past experiences of education, their initial encounters with critical pedagogy and …

Schiff Bases As Versatile Platforms: From Multinuclear Dysprosium Complexes To Halogen-Mediated Quasiracemic Crystal Engineering, Macy M. Michorczyk Jan 2026

Schiff Bases As Versatile Platforms: From Multinuclear Dysprosium Complexes To Halogen-Mediated Quasiracemic Crystal Engineering, Macy M. Michorczyk

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the factors that govern molecular assembly is fundamental in both coordination chemistry and crystal engineering. This thesis investigates these processes through two studies that employ single-crystal X-ray diffraction to elucidate the structural principles underlying the formation of multinuclear metal complexes and the crystal packing of quasiracemates.

The first study examines the unexpected formation of multinuclear metal complexes. Structural characterization of a series of dysprosium complexes was used to compare molecular architectures and identify structural relationships that support a proposed pathway of formation. These findings shed insight into the assembly process that may have lead to their formation.

The second …

Multimodal Characterization Of Intracranial Biomechanics In A 3d Biofidelic Head Surrogate, Ahmed A. Alshareef, J. Sebastian Giudice, Daniel F. Shedd, Yuan-Chiao Lu, Curtis L. Johnson, Dzung L. Pham, Matthew B. Panzer Jan 2026

Multimodal Characterization Of Intracranial Biomechanics In A 3d Biofidelic Head Surrogate, Ahmed A. Alshareef, J. Sebastian Giudice, Daniel F. Shedd, Yuan-Chiao Lu, Curtis L. Johnson, Dzung L. Pham, Matthew B. Panzer

Faculty Publications

Rapid head motion causes the brain to deform, which may lead to acute and chronic consequences to normal brain health and function. Since the risk and severity of brain injury correlates with brain strain, computational and physical models of the brain response to impact are commonly used to assess risk and evaluate safety devices in silico. Most physical head surrogates that are used for equipment evaluation, however, are simplified and lack internal measures of brain deformation, relying instead on the interpretation of the resulting head kinematics to predict injury. Developing a more biofidelic physical brain surrogate to improve brain …

The Impact Of Trade Liberalisation On Human Rights To Freshwater For Domestic Uses In The Developing World: An Examination Of Nigeria., Dickson Esonarae

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

AbstractName: Dickson Efosa Esonarae.Title: The Impact of Trade Liberalisation on Human Rights to Freshwater for domestic uses in the Developing World: An Examination of Nigeria.Freshwater is a vital life-sustaining resource. Though considered basic in developed countries, it is often scarce and mostly of inadequate quality in the developing world (Global South), with the WHO and UNICEF Report estimating about 1.1 billion people globally lacking access. Consequently, several countries are determined to provide freshwater for their people but often hampered by financial constraints for the requisite infrastructure. Considering this limitation, the International Economic Institutions (IEIs) identified the private sector as the …

Study Of Compressibility Of Flames In Scramjet Combustors, Anirudh Ranganathan Jan 2026

Study Of Compressibility Of Flames In Scramjet Combustors, Anirudh Ranganathan

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Viable forms of propulsion for practical hypersonic flight are of great interest in modern times, of which supersonic combustion ramjets(scramjets) are a very advantageous option. Compared to ramjets, which are severely limited by increasing total pressure loss and dissociation effects, scramjets offer a much more efficient form of propulsion in the Mach 6 – 8 regime. Despite this, a common and unmitigated issue facing scramjet technology is scramjet unstart.

Prior investigations researching scramjet unstart have elucidated global heat release considerations in relation to total fueling or combustion modes as a result of global heat release . Minimal work has been …

Multibody Acausal Framework For Structural Dynamics Of Offshore Support Structures With Hydroelasticity And Soil-Structure Interaction, Saad Rahman Jan 2026

Multibody Acausal Framework For Structural Dynamics Of Offshore Support Structures With Hydroelasticity And Soil-Structure Interaction, Saad Rahman

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Offshore energy systems present significant challenges in support structure design due to their scale and the strong coupling between aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, and structural subsystems. These interactions make traditional sequential modeling approaches inefficient for design exploration. Acausal modeling frameworks address this limitation by enabling direct integration of coupled subsystems without reformulating governing equations, improving computational efficiency while preserving physical fidelity. This supports rapid exploration of large design spaces, accelerates iteration cycles, and shortens the path from concept to deployment.

This thesis develops and validates an acausal multibody elastodynamics model for offshore support structures. The framework includes structural flexibility to capture member-level …

Design And Characterization Of A Jet Nozzle Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Valerie K. Rodriguez Jan 2026

Design And Characterization Of A Jet Nozzle Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Valerie K. Rodriguez

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

This paper presents the design and experimental characterization of the jet exit velocity from a supersonic nozzle injecting into a low-pressure vacuum chamber using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The PIV method is employed to overcome limitations encountered in prior experiments characterizing a jet-in-crossflow, such as qualitative shock visualization and insufficient data on jet exit properties. The previous set of experiments used Classical Schlieren to visualize the flow as well as emission measurement with IR detectors. For the fuel injection cases, particular emphasis is placed on preventing condensation within the injection line and at the nozzle exit due to under expanded …

Investigating The Potential Utilisation Of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens) As An Alternative Protein Source In Tilapia And Carp Feed, Sahya Maulu

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Three experimental trials were conducted to evaluate defatted black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) larvae meal and BSF frass as alternative protein ingredients. Defatted BSF larvae meal was tested in diets for both Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio), whereas BSF frass was assessed only in Nile tilapia. In the first experiment, dietary inclusion of 20% and 40% BSF meal, replacing mainly soybean meal (SBM) and corn gluten meal (CGM), was evaluated in Nile tilapia over 5 weeks. BSF improved growth and feed utilisation in a dose-dependent manner, increased posterior intestinal fold length, muscularis thickness, and goblet cell …

Large-Scale Coastal Dynamics: New Incites From Lidar And Satellite Remote Sensing, Aikaterini Konstantinou Jan 2026

Large-Scale Coastal Dynamics: New Incites From Lidar And Satellite Remote Sensing, Aikaterini Konstantinou

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

This thesis leverages remote sensing methods to advance understanding of shoreline morphodynamics from storm to decadal timescales, focusing on three interrelated objectives. First, regional patterns and timescales of beach recovery following the extreme 2013/14 winter were quantified using bi-annual LiDAR and RTK-GNSS surveys of 23 south-west England sites. Recovery trajectories exhibited consistent patterns aligned with pre-existing storm response classifications, demonstrating that both storm response and post-storm recovery can be classified into four groups governed by intrinsic geomorphological and hydrodynamic controls. Almost 90% of sites had recovered at least 75% of lost sediment within three years, while some fully exposed beaches …

Impacts Of Microplastics In A Changing Agri-Environment, Riley Kent Jan 2026

Impacts Of Microplastics In A Changing Agri-Environment, Riley Kent

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Microplastics are increasingly recognized as persistent contaminants in terrestrial ecosystems, yet their impacts on plant performance remain poorly understood under realistic environmental conditions. In natural and agricultural systems, plants rarely encounter contaminants in isolation, instead experiencing multiple interacting stressors. The work presented in this thesis investigated how soil microplastics influence plant growth and physiology both independently and in combination with freshwater flooding, a climate-relevant stressor associated with increased storm activity and shifts in precipitation patterns. Using white clover (Trifolium repens) as a model agronomic legume across multiple cultivars, the study examined how polymer identity, plant genotype, and environmental context interact …

Assessing Past Storm And Tsunami Events With Coastal Boulder Deposits: Implications For Offshore And Coastal Renewable Energy Infrastructure, Storm Roberts Jan 2026

Assessing Past Storm And Tsunami Events With Coastal Boulder Deposits: Implications For Offshore And Coastal Renewable Energy Infrastructure, Storm Roberts

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Coastal boulder deposits are found on coastlines worldwide, transported inland by extreme storm or tsunami events. These deposits are understudied, yet hold unique information about the magnitude of the waves which emplaced them, enabling the addition of new events to the storm and tsunami record. However, boulder transport by storm waves is commonly misidentified as tsunami events, traditional methods for calculating boulder size are outdated, the influence of boulder shape on transport is understudied, there are difficulties making comparisons between physical experiments and field data, and commonly used equations for estimating wave flow velocities from boulders have been shown to …

Characterization And Antibacterial Assessment Of An Isoborneol-Loaded Nanoemulsion, Sharon M. Rodriguez Villacis Jan 2026

Characterization And Antibacterial Assessment Of An Isoborneol-Loaded Nanoemulsion, Sharon M. Rodriguez Villacis

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

In the United States, about 35,000 fatalities occur annually due to antibiotic resistant infections. It is progressively becoming one of the largest challenges when treating hospital-acquired infections. This decline in effectiveness of commonly used antibiotics makes it essential to identify, synthesize, and formulate compounds that possess antimicrobial activity against these common pathogens. Isoborneol, a compound that is naturally occurring terpene that can be derived from the Camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora, is known for its antimicrobial properties in traditional medicine and in prior literature. To assess this hypothesis, an oil-in-water (OW) nanoemulsion of isoborneol was synthesized, characterized, and assessed for …

Shock Tube Speciation Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Relevant To Solid Fuel Combustion, Diego N. Ruiz Pena Jan 2026

Shock Tube Speciation Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Mixtures Relevant To Solid Fuel Combustion, Diego N. Ruiz Pena

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Solid Fuel Ramjets (SFRJs) are often used in tactical applications due to their simplicity, robustness, and reliability. No moving parts, atmospheric oxidizer usage, and scalable fuel grain designs make them a great solution for compact, high-speed air-breathing propulsion systems. SFRJs operate by compressing incoming air through a fixed geometry inlet and directing it over a regressing solid fuel surface, where pyrolysis gases are released and transported downstream to the combustion chamber where thrust is generated. Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a commonly used fuel binder in SFRJ systems due to its high energy density, stable combustion behavior, and ease of processing. …

A Frequency-Dependent Hydrodynamic Modeling Framework For Offshore Platforms With Optimization-Based Parameter Identification, Md. Rafid-Ul Haque Sakif Jan 2026

A Frequency-Dependent Hydrodynamic Modeling Framework For Offshore Platforms With Optimization-Based Parameter Identification, Md. Rafid-Ul Haque Sakif

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Accurate prediction of hydrodynamic loads on offshore platforms requires drag coefficients that adequately capture their dependence on wave frequency. However, conventional implementations of Morison’s equation generally assume constant drag coefficients across the entire frequency spectrum, which can lead to inaccuracies in predicting platform responses under complex sea-state conditions. To address this limitation, this study proposes a frequency-dependent hydrodynamic modeling framework in which the platform response is decomposed into distinct frequency regions, specifically low-frequency and high-frequency components. Separate drag coefficients are assigned to each region to better represent the underlying flow physics. The decomposition is achieved using filtering techniques in the …
