Multiple Use Of Grassland Resources (Grasslands To Provide Natural Resource Conservation And A Quality Environment For Mankind), P J. Edwards
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The grasslands of the world ( and communities closely akin to them, such as shrub and savanna types) provide not only a very effective mantle for protection of the soil, but also the main source of feed for herbivores. They also cater to many other needs of mankind. Increasing population results in competition between types of grassland use for specific sites. Sound planning is necessary to resolve this conflict in the way most beneficial to mankind. In order to plan logically it is necessary to make an inventory of the resources, to consider the various uses to which grasslands can …
Nitrogen Relationships In Grassland Ecosystems, A Lazenby
Nitrogen Relationships In Grassland Ecosystems, A Lazenby
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Some recent findings affecting nitrogen (N) cycling in grassland ecosystems are discussed, and an indication is given of major problems requiring research and development. The importance of modern techniques is stressed to enable further quantification of the pathways and processes of the nutrient in grassland; such data are needed both to improve understanding and to enable more efficient use of N in practice. A brief description of the N in soil organic matter is followed by an account of symbiotic N fixation by legumes, including estimated levels and rates of fixation and factors affecting the process. Data are presented on …
Practical Livestock-Forage Systems: Model To Manager, R W. Brougham
Practical Livestock-Forage Systems: Model To Manager, R W. Brougham
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The developments in practical livestock-forage systems research during this century are outlined, and present-day approaches are discussed. Some examples of production levels presently being obtained from research stations, top farmers, and average farmers in different regions of the world are presented. These indicate that production levels being obtained from livestockforage systems research remain appreciably higher than levels being obtained from the best farmers. Comments are made on the many different research techniques used to demonstrate these levels in both developed and developing countries. The value of this type of research to the farm adviser and farmer is also noted. Some …
Contribution Of Forages To Worldwide Food Production: Now And In The Future, E F. Henzell
Contribution Of Forages To Worldwide Food Production: Now And In The Future, E F. Henzell
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Herbivorous livestock provided during the 1970s an estimated minimum 7%-17% of the total dietary protein in Asia and Africa compared with about 30 % in Latin America and just over 30 % in the developed countries. Cattle accounted for approximately 70% of the world's domestic animals (calculated in units weighted for size), buffaloes for 10%, and sheep and goats for 11 % . About 69 % of these animal units were in the developing countries, but productivity was higher in the developed countries. Forages, defined broadly to include all edible plant materials except grains and concentrates, provided more than 90% …
Potential Productivity Of Temperate And Tropical Grassland Systems, G O. Mott
Potential Productivity Of Temperate And Tropical Grassland Systems, G O. Mott
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grasses of temperate regions of the world belong primarily to the subfamily Festucoideae, whereas tropical regions are populated by tribes of the Panicoideae subfamily. Temperate grasses have a C3 biochemical pathway of photosynthesis in contrast to tropical grasses, which have a C4 photosynthetic mechan-ism. Both tropical and temperate legumes are C3 plants. Compatible mixtures of legumes and grasses have long been successful in many temperate regions, but combining C4 grasses and C3 legumes as mixtures in the tropics has been only moderately successful. Maximum net primary productions of temperate and tropical grasslands are in the order of 25 and 80 …
Use Of Genetic Resources For Improvement Of Forage Species, J R. Harlan
Use Of Genetic Resources For Improvement Of Forage Species, J R. Harlan
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The use of genetic resources of forage species poses some special problems because of the number of species involved, the inadequacy of our knowledge about them, the fact that they are often used in combination and should be evaluated in terms of livestock product, and so on. Collections should be as comprehensive as possible at the outset of improvement programs; otherwise, there may be much use of inferior material and much waste of time and effort. Most of the forage species in use come from (1) Europe (excluding Mediterranean zones), (2) Mediterranean Basin and Near East, (3) African savannas (mostly …
Forage Quality: Assessing The Plant-Animal Complex, D J. Minson
Forage Quality: Assessing The Plant-Animal Complex, D J. Minson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
At the VI International Grassland Congress held at Pennsylvania State College in 1952, the late Dr. C.P. McMeekan reviewed the many problems associated with the plant-animal complex. Great stress was placed on the need to measure forage intake accurately as a prerequisite to an under-standing of the plant-animal complex. Progress in the development of more accurate :methods of estimating the forage intake of grazing animals is reviewed, including the introduction of different methods of administering chromic oxide, the esophageal fistula for obtaining samples of selectively grazed material, the in-vitro technique for estimating the digestibility of the forage eaten, and the …
Competitive, Adaptive, And Evolutionary Process In Grassland Ecosystems, B D. Patil
Competitive, Adaptive, And Evolutionary Process In Grassland Ecosystems, B D. Patil
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the tropics, grasslands or grazing lands are found where the forest vegetation climax has been subjected to fire, grazing, felling, or other disturbances. Grazing lands in the tropics form various ecosystems under the major climatic types. Delineation of such ecosystems is possible through remnants of the climax vegetation of undisturbed or least-disturbed areas. Several subecosystems exist as seral stages under each ecosystem, the floristic composition of which is a reflection of the edaphic and soilmoisture-fertility conditions. Biological production in terms of energy for grazing animals varies among these ecosystems and subecosystems. Reconstruction of the adaptable competitive flora with woody …

Feeding Mechanics And Digestive Physiology Of Map Turtles, Michael Christopher Fulbright
Doctoral Dissertations
The objective of this research was to relate the form of the map turtle feeding apparatus to its function and digestive physiology. Female map turtles (Genus Graptemys) exhibit pronounced differences in their head shapes and prey bases in the wild. I measured voluntary bite force in megacephalic Pearl River map turtles (G. pearlensis) and microcephalic Sabine map turtles (G. sabinensis) along with a suite of morphological characteristics. I found that many morphological characteristics are good predictors of bite performance in both megacephalic and microcephalic map turtles, and that the commonly used metric of head width noted in other studies of …

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) are major contributors to healthcare-associated infection, yet data from primary care clinics remain limited. This study assessed environmental contamination in eight clinics in the Klang Valley, Malaysia, and evaluated associated environmental factors. Samples were collected from environmental surfaces and equipment in Medical Officer and Patient Treatment Rooms, then cultured and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. Environmental parameters, including temperature, relative humidity, air movement, and room density, were measured. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney, and multiple linear regression analyses. MRSA was detected on 19.8% of environmental surfaces (patient treatment beds (47.3%) and side …
The Relation Between Parental Bonding And Sexual Self-Concept In College Students, Kinsey Hatfield
The Relation Between Parental Bonding And Sexual Self-Concept In College Students, Kinsey Hatfield
Masters Theses
This thesis explores the relation between two dimensions of parental bonding—care and overprotection—and four aspects of sexual self-concept including sexual agency, desire, anxiety, and satisfaction in college students. We also explored the use of a relatively novel measure of sexual self-concept, the MSSCQ-SF. 292 college students completed measures regarding parental bonding, sexual self-concept, and various demographic questions. Results partially supported our hypotheses, with parental care and overprotection being correlated with sexual anxiety and satisfaction but not desire or agency. Further, parental overprotection was positively correlated with sexual anxiety above and beyond the demographic variables assessed. These findings suggest that parental …
Leadership Experiences Of Gender-Diverse Managers In U.S. Libraries And Museums, Galen Jay Talis
Leadership Experiences Of Gender-Diverse Managers In U.S. Libraries And Museums, Galen Jay Talis
Faculty Scholarship
This article explores how gender-diverse managers in U.S. libraries and museums experience leadership and perceive gender to influence leadership. In-depth interviews were conducted with five gender-diverse managers. Data were analyzed with inductive, semantic thematic analysis and a complementary, deductive analysis using Wharton’s multilevel gender framework. Participants described relational, pragmatic, point-person leadership—connecting and supporting people, coordinating work, and translating between units—while expressing ambivalence about formal and hierarchical roles. Most did not initially link leadership to gender; when prompted, they articulated gender’s influence at individual, interactional, and institutional levels. Gender discrimination and transphobia persist even in woman-dominated contexts, shaping decisions about visibility, …

Evidence comparing MSD risk between formal and informal workers remains limited, particularly in developing countries. This study examined the association between individual and job-related factors with MSD symptoms among formal and informal workers in Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,089 workers in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, from August 2024 to December 2025. Participants were recruited using stratified convenience sampling from both the formal (office and health workers) and informal (drivers, traders, and farmers) sectors. MSD symptoms were assessed using the Nordic …
The Statistical Distribution Of U.S. Corn And Soybean Futures Prices, Chiamaka D. Osigwe
The Statistical Distribution Of U.S. Corn And Soybean Futures Prices, Chiamaka D. Osigwe
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis investigates the best-fit empirical distribution for daily U.S. corn and soybean futures price changes and examines how distributional choices affect Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected Shortfall (ES) estimates. The dataset comprises daily nearby futures prices for corn (11/16/1994–04/23/2025) and soybeans (10/16/1979–02/15/2023), yielding 7,626 and 10,853 observations, respectively. An ARCH-LM test confirms the presence of Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (ARCH). Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models were estimated, and to account for potential asymmetric effects, an EGARCH model was used. EGARCH (1,1) estimation reveals an inverse leverage effect, where positive price shocks generate higher volatility. Six heavy-tailed distributions were evaluated, and …

A New Hybrid Approach For Magnetohydrodynamic Flow Over A Stretching Surface With Nanofluid, Ammar Al-Salih, Abdul-Sattar Jaber Al-Saif
Baghdad Science Journal
The current investigation focuses on developing a semi-analytical technique aimed at estimating the solutions of magnetohydrodynamics flow with Casson tri-hybrid nanofluid (TiO2 - SiO2 - Al2O3/blood) flowing over a stretchable surface along two-dimensional space. To solve the obtained nonlinear coupled differential equations in the problem formulation, the proposed semi-analytical approach makes use of the Shehu reduced differential transform Padé method (SRDTPM). Several physical parameters, such as slip effect, porosity, magnetic strength, and Casson number, were considered for examining the effect on momentum, while radiation parameter, heat generation/absorption, temperature-dependent heat sink/source term, and Biot number …

To Chew Or Not To Chew: Effect Of Aposematism On Caterpillar Predation, Emily Kuehnl, Sadie Bivens, Rebekah Rowe, Olivia Halvorsen
Curiosity
Understanding predator-prey interactions offers insight into ecological dynamics and the selective pressures shaping traits that drive adaptive strategies. Aposematism is a well-established defense mechanism that combines conspicuous coloration with unpalatable chemical deterrents. This strategy is particularly effective against visually oriented avian predators, yet less is known about arthropods and mammals, which rely on other sensory cues. This study seeks to broaden the understanding of the effectiveness of aposematism by examining whether warning coloration in caterpillars will deter predation by birds, mammals, and arthropods. To achieve this, plasticine caterpillars representing cryptic (brown) and aposematic (yellow) phenotypes were deployed to trees in …
Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh
Motherhood Within The Patriarchal Family: Reconstructing Feminism Through "Frankenstein", Yasamin Osqueezadeh
Curiosity
In 1792, pioneering English feminist Mary Wollstonecraft published “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,” arguing that women’s rights could only advance if women moved into the male-dominated public sphere, leaving behind household-centered education, traditional marriage structures, and the nuclear family dynamic. In 1818, Wollstonecraft’s daughter Mary Shelley published “Frankenstein,” in which she explored and critiqued women’s permanent and unacknowledged status as caretakers within their households. Whereas Wollstonecraft aimed to dismantle marriage completely, Shelley simultaneously argued to preserve the notion of family and marriage while also reconstructing the gender roles within those dynamics. Through the lack of female representation from …

Effects Of Uv Exposure On Fecundity, Survival, And Performance Of A Stored Grain Pest, Callosobruchus Maculatus, Colby Christensen, Fielding Mumford, Spencer Brinton, Anna Goates, Md Mirajul Islam
Curiosity
Seed beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus) are a pest of stored leguminous grains that can dramatically decrease yields. Management strategies to control infestations of C. maculatus are important for economic and food security. Radiation exposure is one possible management strategy that has shown promise. In two separate course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), we tested how exposure to UV-C light affects C. maculatus fecundity, survival, and performance. Callosobruchus maculatus individuals were exposed to UV-C at two different life-stages: parent and egg exposure during oviposition and larval exposure during development. Whereas UV exposed two-week old eggs experienced slightly increased mortality, no significant …

The use of persistent plastic in food packaging continues to raise practical and environmental concerns, prompting interest in biodegradable alternatives derived from biomass. In this work, cellulose derived from coconut dregs was used as a film-forming material. The cellulose was isolated using a combination of chemical and ultrasonic treatments, followed by grafting with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). Citronella oil (CitO) was incorporated at different loadings to produce GraftCell/CitO0.15, GraftCell/CitO0.6, and GraftCell/CitO1.2 films. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed grafting, while structural changes were reflected in an increase in the crystallinity index from 10.55% to 16.04%. Thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis further revealed a shift …

Background: Immunosuppressive drugs (ISDs) are essential for preventing organ rejection but have been reported to increase cancer risk with prolonged use. This study compares cancer risk between ISDs used for long-term maintenance after transplantation (T-ISDs) and those prescribed for non-transplant chronic conditions including cell-mediated (C-ISDs) and receptor-mediated (R-ISDs) ISDs. We hypothesized that cancer risk would differ between T-ISDs and both C-ISD and R-ISD groups. Methods: Using the TriNetX database, solid organ transplant recipients treated with tacrolimus (TAC), cyclosporine (CY), rapamycin (RAPA), or mycophenolate (MMF) were compared to propensity-matched R-ISDs (adalimumab, infliximab, etc.) or C-ISDs (methotrexate, azathioprine, etc.) for at least …
