The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 created a unique environment of acute, high-dose ionizing radiation, contrasting sharply with the chronic low-dose rate exposure in the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. This stands in stark contrast to the chronic, low-dose rate contamination that defines the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. While the long-term ecological effects of the latter are well-documented, a systematic synthesis of the floral response to the atomic bombings is lacking. This review integrates historical data with modern radio-ecological principles to analyze plant survival and succession. We document the remarkable recovery of vegetation, from the resprouting …

BACKGROUND: Flow diversion is effective for unruptured distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms, yet comparative data between the Silk Vista Baby (SVB) and Pipeline Embolization Device (PED) in this challenging territory remain scarce.

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study using the CRETA Registry, including consecutive patients with unruptured DACA aneurysms treated with SVB or PED. The primary endpoint was complete angiographic occlusion (O'Kelly-Marotta grade D). Secondary outcomes included procedural characteristics, clinical outcome (modified Rankin Scale), and complications. Overlap weighting was applied to account for non-randomized treatment allocation. Predictors of occlusion were explored using penalized logistic regression. A sensitivity analysis …

Can Generative Ai Make Farming Decisions? Current Status And Future Pathways: A Case Study In Row Crop Production With Chatgpt, Nipuna Chamara, Yufeng Ge, Joe Luck, Yu Pan, Saleh Taghvaeian, Cory Walters, Christopher Proctor, Daran Rudnick, Daren Redfearn

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The agricultural decision-making process is experience-based, knowledge-dependent, time-sensitive, complex, and driven by historical data. Planting, fertilization, irrigation, and chemigation are key categories in farm decision-making, and currently there is no one-shot decision-support tool that covers all these activities. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models are more advanced than traditional machine learning and deep learning models. These models have been trained on vast amounts of data from the internet, allowing them to accept unstructured data in various forms and generate human-like text, solutions to problems, and scenario predictions. Given this capability, we became interested in exploring the potential of generative AI in …

Introduction While many countries achieved notable gains in contraceptive use levels after the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development which redefined family planning (FP) as a human right, there was a long period of 15 years when contraceptive use levels did not receive due attention. It was only later that its subsequent inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2012 London Summit on FP renewed global commitment and a focus towards FP. This paper aims to select countries that identify as ‘exemplar’ low-middle-income countries that have achieved exceptional progress in FP. Examining these outliers can uncover actionable drivers …

Mathematical Models Of Multisensory Detection And Decision-Making, Rebecca M. Brady Jun 2026

Mathematical Models Of Multisensory Detection And Decision-Making, Rebecca M. Brady

Doctoral

The brain seamlessly integrates signals from multiple sensory modalities to interpret the world efficiently. By using information from various senses, the brain can enhance its ability to detect and respond to stimuli more quickly and accurately. However, combining sensory cues from multiple modalities is only sometimes beneficial as it may lead to illusions and reduced behavioural performance. Behavioural and electrophysiological experiments have revealed that detection and decision-making strategies for multisensory cues evolve throughout human development and ageing. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that maladaptive multisensory processing is a key indicator of a proclivity to falls in older adults and individuals with …

Towards Efficient Continual Learning: From Memory Optimization To Foundation Models, Zilin Luo Jun 2026

Towards Efficient Continual Learning: From Memory Optimization To Foundation Models, Zilin Luo

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Continual learning, also termed lifelong learning, enables machine learning models to incrementally acquire new knowledge while mitigating the degradation of previously learned information—a capability essential for adapting to dynamic, real-world data environments. This dissertation investigates the core challenges of continual learning and extends its application to enhancing training efficiency in the era of foundation models. The first part of this dissertation addresses the constraints of few-shot exemplar storage with a novel compression framework. While leveraging class activation maps to downsample non-discriminative pixels, we introduce an adaptive masking model, optimized through bilevel optimization, to store more exemplars efficiently. The second part …

Design And Characterization Of A Pulsed Electric Field Chamber For Microalgae Lysis, Connor Strutin Jun 2026

Design And Characterization Of A Pulsed Electric Field Chamber For Microalgae Lysis, Connor Strutin

Electrical Engineering

Microalgae are a promising renewable source of biofuel due to their high lipid content and rapid growth rates; however, algae cells must be electroporated (lysed) to release these lipids. The system developed in this project applies short (40 μs–10 ms), high-intensity (up to 33 kV/cm) pulsed electric fields (PEF) across cell membranes to enable electroporation.

Our lab-scale PEF chamber generates uniform, high-intensity electric fields using parallel-plate electrodes with sub-millimeter spacing. The system is designed to efficiently lyse microalgae cells for lipid extraction and biofuel production.

MOTIVATION: Multiomics data analysis is essential for scientific discovery in precision medicine. However, translating analysis results of omics data analysis into novel scientific hypotheses remains a significant challenge. Human experts must manually review analysis results and generate new hypotheses based on extensive and interconnected biomedical prior knowledge, which is subjective and not scalable. While large language models can accelerate the discovery, their reasoning improves when grounded in structured, auditable, and comprehensive biomedical prior knowledge. However, biomedical knowledge is scattered across heterogeneous databases that use diverse and inconsistent nomenclature systems, making it difficult to integrate resources into a unified format for …

Control And Entrainment Of Oscillatory Dynamics In An Oncolytic Virus–Tumor Model Under Periodic Therapy Forcing, Aya Salaheddin Shujrawi Jun 2026

Control And Entrainment Of Oscillatory Dynamics In An Oncolytic Virus–Tumor Model Under Periodic Therapy Forcing, Aya Salaheddin Shujrawi

Theses

This thesis investigates the dynamics of a tumour–virus interaction model under sinusoidal periodic viral injection, using the three-compartment ordinary differential equation framework of Baabdulla and Hillen (2024). The aim is to characterise how the frequency and amplitude of periodic injection interact with the system's intrinsic oscillatory dynamics, and to identify conditions for stable frequency entrainment. Equilibrium and Hopf bifurcation analysis of the autonomous system yields a supercritical bifurcation at θ_H^auto ≈ 338.45 with intrinsic frequency Ω0auto ≈ 0.7552. Introducing a constant baseline injection u0 = 0.05 raises the threshold to θHforced ≈ 364.85 and shifts …

Benchmarking Gaslighting Negation Attacks Against Multimodal Large Language Models, Bin Zhu, Yinxuan Gui, Huiyan Qi, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have exhibited remarkable advancements in integrating different modalities, excelling in complex understanding and generation tasks. Despite their success, MLLMs remain vulnerable to conversational adversarial inputs. In this paper, we systematically study gaslighting negation attacks—a phenomenon where models, despite initially providing correct answers, are persuaded by user-provided negations to reverse their outputs, often fabricating justifications. We conduct extensive evaluations of state-of-the-art MLLMs across diverse benchmarks and observe substantial performance drops when negation is introduced. Notably, we introduce the first benchmark GaslightingBench, specifically designed to evaluate the vulnerability of MLLMs to negation arguments. GaslightingBench consists of multiple-choice …

Investigating The Effects Of Increased O-Glcnaylation On Pathology In Alzheimer’S Disease, Melissa Louise Garcia Jun 2026

Investigating The Effects Of Increased O-Glcnaylation On Pathology In Alzheimer’S Disease, Melissa Louise Garcia

ETDs from 2020-2029

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is currently the 7th leading cause of death, with few treatment options. It is known that AD pathology begins 20-30 years before clinical symptoms manifest. Some of the earliest pathological changes occur in glial cells of the hippocampus, causing them to become chronically reactive, as well as the accumulation of Amyloid-β (Aβ) in the hippocampus and hyperphosphorylated Tau (pTau) in the locus coeruleus, resulting in dysfunction of the noradrenergic (NA) system. Preclinical studies have shown promise in the abilities of the post-translational modification O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc). O-GlcNAc is a tightly regulated reversible enzymatic modification controlled by the …

Elucidating The Role Of The Rnf20 Histone Modifier In Pancreatic Beta Cells, Tanya Hans Pierre Jun 2026

Elucidating The Role Of The Rnf20 Histone Modifier In Pancreatic Beta Cells, Tanya Hans Pierre

ETDs from 2020-2029

Diabetes is defined as a loss of functional beta cell mass. It is classically categorized into Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), immune-mediated beta cell destruction and Type 2 Diabetes, which is characterized by whole body insulin resistance alongside beta cell dysregulation. The incidence of diabetes worldwide has risen annually. Despite the presence of therapeutic interventions, diabetes’ heterogeneity can prompt ineffective glycemic control and the development of diabetes-associated comorbidities. For that reason, new approaches to glycemic control for individuals with diabetes are required. One approach to restore glucose homeostasis is beta cell replacement therapy, in which stem cells are programmed into beta-like …

ETDs from 2020-2029

More than 40% of U.S. women have cardiovascular disease (CVD), and nearly half have at least one major risk factor. Sparse evidence exists related to the role of childrearing (regardless of prior pregnancy) on CVD. A recent literature review highlighted the influence of reproduction on CVD and health and identified opportunities for advancement. At present, it has yet to be discovered from prospective epidemiologic studies the extent to which parenting and maternal events have influence on cardiovascular health and clinical events. It has been demonstrated that parous women have greater prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., short sleep duration and …

Recognizing Patients In Places: A Multilevel Analysis Of Severe Heat-Related Illness Risk In Birmingham, Al, Andria Cimino

ETDs from 2020-2029

Socially marginalized people face a higher risk of adverse health outcomes from extreme heat—as many as 12,000 U.S. deaths a year are attributable to heat-related illness (HRI), a preventable but multifactorial condition. Where one lives plays a critical role in HRI incidence, with evidence linking historically segregated and disinvested urban environments to a higher risk. The literature also suggests that Black adults experience worse HRI outcomes than non-Hispanic White adults, and that men are often, though not always, at higher risk than women. Individuals with heat-sensitive conditions and socially isolated adults also face elevated risk. Yet the mechanisms by which …

Protein Glycosylation In Natural And Synthetic Minimal Genome Mycoplasmas, John Sanford Jun 2026

Protein Glycosylation In Natural And Synthetic Minimal Genome Mycoplasmas, John Sanford

ETDs from 2020-2029

Mycoplasmas are cell wall-less bacterial symbionts with remarkably streamlined genomes. Mycoplasmas offer two intriguing model organisms for studying concepts of minimal life. Mycoplasma genitalium has streamlined its genome to 580-kbp while maintaining virulence to suit its niche of parasitizing the human urogenital tract. The J. Craig Venter Institute has synthesized and transplanted a 543-kbp genome into a recipient cell, resulting in a non-pathogenic organism termed JCVI-syn3A. The conservation of a biological process in M. genitalium and JCVI-syn3A strongly implies an essential function in mycoplasmas, and potentially all life. Despite common thought of mycoplasmas being the simplest cells, much of their …

Glassjelly: Designing A Skincare App Built Around Understanding, Tracy Le Jun 2026

Glassjelly: Designing A Skincare App Built Around Understanding, Tracy Le

Graphic Communication

Skincare apps today are built around selling products, not building knowledge—and for beginners, that gap is real. Without clear explanations of ingredients or routines, users are left to figure it out alone, often in ways that don’t account for their skin tone, skin type, or cultural backgrounds. Glassjelly was created to fill that gap, offering a skin assessment and ingredient education experience that puts understanding before promotion, and the individual before the trends.
