Ecosystems are shaped by communities of microorganisms whose niches and impacts depend on functional profiles influenced by gene gains and losses. Culture-based experiments demonstrate that mobile genetic elements (MGEs) can mediate gene flux, but quantitative understanding of these dynamics in natural systems remains limited. Here we develop and apply a systematic, meta-omic framework to investigate MGEs in a complex natural system using an 8-year soil time series collected at Stordalen Mire, in Sweden’s thawing permafrost margin. In this climate-critical peatland, we identify ~2.1 million MGE recombinases across 89 microbial phyla and assess ecological distributions, affected functions, past mobility and current …

As global aquaculture expands, sustainable alternative feed ingredients are needed to reduce reliance on fishmeal (FM) and conventional plant proteins. Herein, this study evaluated defatted black soldier fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) larvae meal as a replacement mainly for soybean meal (SBM) and soy protein concentrate (SPC) in juvenile mirror carp diets. Fish (initial weight: 7.28 ± 0.09 g) were reared in a recirculating aquaculture system and fed for 8 weeks on either a control diet or diets containing 20% (BSF20) or 40% (BSF40) BSF meal. After the trial, growth performance was significantly improved in BSF-fed groups, with higher final weight, …

Cervical Insufficiency Revisited: A Proposal For A New Treatment-Aligned Definition, Vincenzo Berghella, Ilaria Paladino, Moti Gulersen, Rupsa Boelig, Amanda Roman
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
Cervical insufficiency [CI] has traditionally been defined as painless cervical dilation resulting in recurrent second-trimester pregnancy loss in the absence of labor or placental pathology. Definitions from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists emphasize historical clinical presentation. However, contemporary obstetrics relies increasingly on ultrasound-based cervical length surveillance and evidence-based cerclage indications rather than retrospective diagnosis. The objective of the review was to propose a definition of cervical insufficiency aligned with current evidence-based indications for mechanical prevention of preterm birth, i.e. cervical cerclage. In modern obstetric practice, the operational diagnosis of clinically …

Trimming of the three glucose residues decorating nascent N-glycoproteins is a critical step for their entry into the endoplasmic reticulum quality control (ERQC) and recognition by ER chaperones. However, the functional relevance of the second glucose (G2) and the regulatory step upstream of its removal by glucosidase II (GCS2) remain poorly understood. Here, we report that TUSC3, a component of the oligosaccharyltransferase (OST) complex, regulates G2 to G1 trimming on N-glycosylated bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) and its Drosophila homolog Dpp to promote their ERQC entry. Loss- and gain-of-function genetic experiments and biochemical assays in mammalian cells and flies indicate …

Background: Despite the widespread adoption of chemoimmunotherapy in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), the mechanisms by which cytotoxic chemotherapy engages antitumor immunity remain poorly defined. Identifying tumor-intrinsic immunogenic programs that predict and enhance responsiveness to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) is therefore of critical clinical importance.
Methods: Transcriptomic signatures of TREX1 deficiency were generated from CRISPR-engineered TNBC models and applied to multiple independent TNBC cohorts treated with chemoimmunotherapy. Cytosolic single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) accumulation was quantified using a flow cytometry-based assay to functionally screen chemotherapeutic agents. Immune activation and therapeutic efficacy were evaluated using in vitro assays, syngeneic mouse tumor models, flow cytometry, …

Alopecia universalis (AU) is a severe autoimmune disorder characterized by complete loss of scalp and body hair. The introduction of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors has expanded therapeutic options for patients with severe disease; however, treatment responses remain variable, particularly among individuals with extensive and longstanding hair loss. Reporting cases with atypical or limited responses to therapy remains important for understanding the spectrum of clinical outcomes observed in practice.
We describe a 30-year-old man with a 23-year history of AU who demonstrated minimal response to multiple prior therapies, including tofacitinib (pan-JAK inhibitor) and ritlecitinib (JAK3/TEC inhibitor), without meaningful scalp, eyebrow, or …

Childhood experiences of economic disadvantage have harmful and long-lasting effects on child health. Early intervention can reduce some harms but it is unclear whether addressing economic disadvantage alongside psychosocial support yields additional benefits. This systematic scoping review aimed to identify evaluated programmes that integrate parenting support (PS) and financial well-being support (FWbS) for parents of children aged 0–19. The objectives were to describe programmes, relevant components, evaluation designs and impact on outcomes, and to consider if any programmes merit replication and testing in a UK context. Outcome or implementation evaluations of integrated PS and FWbS programmes published in English were …
Gender Perspective(S): Lessons From International Human Rights Law To Defend Against Pregnancy Related Prosecutions, Megan Osadzinski
Gender Perspective(S): Lessons From International Human Rights Law To Defend Against Pregnancy Related Prosecutions, Megan Osadzinski
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
The criminalization of pregnancy outcomes—such as miscarriages, abortion, obstetric emergencies, and stillbirth—is a violation of fundamental human rights guarantees; including the right to a fair trial when read in conjunction with the right to equality and the right to health. This article outlines state obligations under international human rights law toward women charged in pregnancy prosecutions, translating them into national criminal defense strategies using a gender perspective. Using intersectional theory, this article calls for the use of a gender perspective to challenge such prosecutions as unlawful gender-based discrimination and a gendered violation of due process, using the case study of …

Distribution And Transport Of Lithium Ions At Interfaces Between Graphite And Carboxymethyl Celluloses, Zi-Jun Huang, Zhen-Ying Zheng, Hua-Wei Cao, Jian Wang, Qing-Feng Zhang, Sheng-Li Chen
Journal of Electrochemistry
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is a water-processable binder widely used for graphite anodes. However, a microscopic understanding of why the identity of CMC counterions (Li+/Na+/K+) strongly affects electrode performance remains limited. Here, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to track Li+ transport accessibility across electrolyte/CMC/graphite three-phase interfaces, comparing pure CMC-Li, CMC-Na, CMC-K, and mixed-counterion CMC binders. We find that CMC-Li sustains a continuous Li+ transport pathway from the electrolyte through the binder phase toward graphite. In contrast, in CMC-Na and CMC-K, Na+/K+ ions preferentially enrich at the graphite/binder interface, forming …

Citizen science approaches are increasingly used to support data generation and public engagement across the environmental sciences, yet their wider pedagogical value within physical geography remains underexamined. To explore the value of mapping-based citizen science for both glaciological investigation and geographical learning, we developed GlacierMap, an interactive online tool enabling participants to map glacier change in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca over a 34-year period. GlacierMap was designed not only to assess the feasibility and value of crowd-sourced glacier mapping, but also as a vehicle to support experiential learning of the trends in, and impacts of, tropical mountain glacier retreat. Participants mapped …

Life Writing Knowledge And Narrative Medicine : Creating The Transnational Self, Alfred Hornung
Life Writing Knowledge And Narrative Medicine : Creating The Transnational Self, Alfred Hornung
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
Poetry and narration are among the most distinctive expressions of lifewriting. Poetic and narrative representations of the self, often associated with discrimination and disease, have got a psychotherapeutic effect. Ideally, collaborating agents in life- writing and narrative would produce a kind of societal knowledge with a global dimension, transcending the individual selfawareness, creating thus a framework for a would-be social integration. This paper is concerned with Audre Lorde’s poetic and narrative report on breast cancer, preceding her years in Berlin as a visiting professor in the 1980s, when her own experience as a “black lesbian poet or feminist lover” testified …
The Hunting Charge, Omar Mounir
The Hunting Charge, Omar Mounir
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
Written in the form of a deliberately polemical essay, this text challenges the very concept of the 'hunting permit' and proposes to replace it with that of the 'hunting charge', effecting a conceptual revolution with profound legal implications regarding the status of game and the rights and duties of hunters. The author denounces the dominant mentality of hunters who, armed with their paid permit, believe themselves authorised to harvest without limits or responsibilities, ignoring the biological cycles of game, the issues of species balance, and the fragility of the environment, and assimilating hunting to a simple 'purchased right' rather than …

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a mixture of phenolic compounds that can effectively replace commercially available phenols in various applications. This study investigated the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of CNSL extracted using CO2–expanded hexane (CXH) and compared to the traditional Soxhlet extraction method. Steamed cashew nut shells (sCNS) were used in both cases. The CXH was carried under varying CO2-mole fractions (0.468-0.892) and temperatures (20-36 °C) whereas Soxhlet extraction was performed at atmospheric pressure and hexane boiling point. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with Central Composite Face-Centred Design (CCFD) was employed to evaluate the effect …

Coastal and estuarine ecosystems are vital as essential fish habitat (EFH). Given accelerating climate- and human-driven environmental change, conserving these habitats is increasingly urgent to ensure the sustainability of marine populations and their associated fisheries. This paper examines how scientific knowledge is being used to support management of EFH in the USA, Europe, and elsewhere. We find that while scientific knowledge to identify and quantify important habitats has rapidly increased, the transfer of this knowledge to management practice has been limited and slow, resulting in important habitats being vulnerable to degradation. Through an international review of EFH concepts and their …

Why Not Pachucos? Mexican Americans, Hollywood, And The Impact Of Sleepy Lagoon In The 1940s And 1950s, Krystal Catalina Ledesma
Journal of 20th Century Media History
The unsolved murder of a young Mexican American on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1942—commonly known as the Sleepy Lagoon Murder—came at a pivotal time in Mexican American history. The consequent arrests, unjust trial, and imprisonment of over one dozen young Mexican American men caused such a stir that Sleepy Lagoon is considered a precursor to the infamous Zoot Suit Riots of 1943. During the Sleepy Lagoon trial, impassioned leftists in Los Angeles created the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee (SLDC) to raise awareness about the crime and trial and to collect funds from supporters across the U.S., who ranged …

J3) The Autopoiesis Of Pilgrimage Tourism: How Cruise Passengers Self-Organise Transformational Meaning In Mass Tourism, Taja Macek, Tadeja Jere Jakulin
International Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Conferences
Modern cruise tourism presents a theoretical paradox for the Mediterranean basin. Every year, millions of passengers sail along maritime routes that follow ancient pilgrimage routes. They head towards Rome, the Holy Land, and the coastal approaches to Lourdes, Santiago, and Montserrat. All this takes place within one of the most operationally regulated and commercially standardised forms of mass tourism. Even within this structural rigidity, travellers regularly report profound personal transformation, spiritual encounters, and meaning-making that are strikingly reminiscent of traditional pilgrimage narratives (Collins-Kreiner, 2010; Olsen & Timothy, 2006). This discrepancy between the system's design and the individual's experience poses a …
