Many health care providers, both implicitly and explicitly, perpetuate stigma in their treatment of patients classified as obese. While medical professionals understand that a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment is ineffective, patients classified as obese are frequently offered limited treatment options that fail to account for their unique needs. Access to a range of effective treatment options has historically been limited, but new GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), have shown incredible promise in addressing the obesity crisis. Unfortunately, these transformative drugs are costly, in high demand, and not widely covered by insurance, rendering them inaccessible for …

Data From: Complete Mitochondrial Genomes Of The Spring Pygmy Sunfish (Elassoma Alabamae), Kayla M. Fast, David Lee Pounders, Mayah P. Peterson, Michael W. Sandel
Research Data
The Spring Pygmy Sunfish, Elassoma alabamae (Mayden, 1993), is a small species of sunfish (Centrarchiformes) endemic to tributaries to the middle Tennessee River in north Alabama. Elassoma alabamae is the most geographically restricted member of Elassoma and the only species found above the fall line. This species was twice considered extinct and was listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as threatened in 2013. To date, surveys for this species have been limited to traditional invasive methods using dipnets and seines. In order to reduce impacts on sensitive populations, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome with the intent of developing a …

The Underexplored Complexity Of Pancreatic Cancer: Early Dissemination And Quiescence, Nivedeta Krishna Kumar, Annant Bir Kaur, Surinder K. Batra, Moorthy P. Ponnusamy
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Pancreatic cancer has been renowned for its aggressive nature and occasionally manifests periods of dormancy, presenting a perplexing challenge in studying disease progression. Despite surgery, many patients relapse due to dormancy and chemoresistance, resulting in recurrence and death within a few years. Studies also suggest that pancreatic cancer disseminates early on, spreading to secondary organs with no evidence of disease. The lingering question is: how, where, and when does pancreatic cancer recur and spread? Herein, we explore evidence for clinically dormant pancreatic cancer cells, examining the roles of quiescence and stemness populations and their interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Understanding …

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDACs) are lethal tumors exhibiting resistance to most cancer therapeutics, particularly DNA-damaging agents. The
METHODS: Western blot analyses were used to assess the impacts of Rac1 inhibition on the components of the ATR/Chk1 cascade.
RESULTS: Here, we show that Rac1 inhibition disrupts ATR/Chk1 signaling by promoting degradation of Claspin, a key component of the fork protection complex needed for the Ser345-phosphorylation of Chk1 by ATR. In PDACs and normal pancreatic ductal cells, Rac1 inhibition (via inhibitors or siRNA) decreased Claspin protein levels without affecting its mRNA, reflecting a >3-fold reduction in Claspin's half-life. Claspin contains a …

Radiation therapy (RT) is a mainstay of treatment for a myriad of cancers, often utilized for tumors that are unable to be resected, as well as an adjunct to surgery and chemotherapy. Unfortunately, many cancers are resistant to RT-induced damage and subsequent cell death. This has spurred the pursuit of novel radiation sensitizers that could potentiate the effects of this widely used and important treatment modality. Since its discovery as a regulated cell death mechanism in 2012, ferroptosis has been studied for its connection to cancer and other known oxidative pathways. With this, the interplay between RT and ferroptosis in …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the most lethal cancers, with over 83% of patients presenting metastases to vital organs such as the liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Although glycosylation has been established as a critical factor in PDAC development, little is known about the molecular underpinnings of organ-specific metastasis. In this study, we investigated the role of glycosyltransferases (GTs) in mediating PDAC metastatic organotropism. Through an unbiased transcriptomic screen, we identified distinct GT expression patterns in liver- and lung-tropic PDAC cells. Notably, GCNT3 and B3GNT3 were selectively upregulated in liver and lung-tropic cells, respectively. These mutually exclusive expression patterns were …

Remember To Say Her Name - Addressing Black Women's Experiences Of Vicarious Police Brutality And Testing A Racial Trauma Meditation, Gabriella A. Roper
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Black women and girls are disproportionately impacted by police violence, as some are victims of brutality but also as viewers of police violence videos and advocates for police reform (Williams, 2021). Yet, most media coverage centers on police brutality against Black men, rendering the suffering of Black women largely invisible. Studies indicate heightened rates of distress experienced by Black women as a result of race-based stressors, compounded by their limited access to adaptive coping mechanisms (Beauliere, 2022; Hawkins, 2022). This study investigated the psychological effects of vicarious police brutality exposure on Black women. In addition, this study evaluated the effectiveness …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Burrowing And Subterranean Locomotion In The Sand Lance Using A Transparent Sediment, Issei Fujita, Makoto Tomiyasu, Jun Yamamoto, Yasuzumi Fujimori
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Sand lances (Ammodytes spp.) rely on rapid burrowing into sediment for predator avoidance. Although their sediment grain-size preferences are well documented, the biomechanics underlying burrowing success remain unclear because natural substrates are opaque. Using a transparent-sediment system, we directly visualized and quantified burrowing kinematics to: (1) test the effect of body size (total length, TL) on burrowing success; (2) examine entry mechanisms (e.g., swimming speed, entry angle); and (3) describe locomotion within sediment. Logistic regression on the full dataset (N = 28 fish) identified TL as the primary determinant of success, with larger individuals exhibiting significantly higher success …

Cruise Network Design Under Sequential Duopolistic Entry, Ta-Hui Yang, Ching-Hui Tang, Wan-Tien O
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study addresses the network design for international cruise services in a duopolistic market, where carriers enter and make decisions sequentially. The leader, who makes the first move, makes decisions as there is no competitor in the market. The follower, who makes decisions later, has to design their network considering the existing leader’s network. The leader’s model is a mixed integer linear problem while the follower’s model is a mixed integer nonlinear problem. Therefore, a heuristic is proposed to solve the problem. The commercially available general algebraic modeling system is used in conjunction with its different solvers to solve the …

Effect Of Heat Treatment On The Corrosion And Wear Behavior Of 17-4 Ph Stainless Steel For Marine Applications, Syuan Tai, I-Kon Lee, Ming-Yuan Lin, Kang-Yu Liao, Chin-Chun Chang, Hung-Bin Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study explores the tribocorrosion behavior of conventionally cast 17-4 PH stainless steel under real seawater conditions, focusing on the effects of three heat treatments (Solution, H900, H1100). Electrochemical tests, tribocorrosion experiments, SEM, XPS, and quantitative analysis were used to establish a three-stage tribocorrosion mechanism. Results show that H900 exhibits superior corrosion and wear resistance, while H1100 suffers increased material loss and surface cracking at high potentials. Elemental analysis revealed NbC migration forming third-body particles, which, although briefly reducing friction, induced local stress concentration and crack initiation. The findings highlight the critical influence of microstructure, passive film stability, and third-body …

Enhancing Underwater Imagery And Organism Detection Using Reinforcement Learning, K. Arul Deepa, P. Ramya, Karpaga Vinodha, Dharmaraja C
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Underwater environments pose significant challenges in assessing image quality and organism detection due to light scattering and absorption, which limits visibility and color fidelity. Existing solutions often fail to effectively address these challenges, resulting in suboptimal image quality and hindering organism identification. This paper examines the problem through a dual-focused approach: enhancing underwater images and detecting organisms using the Underwater Image Enhancement Benchmark (UIEB) dataset. The first step introduces a state-of-the-art method for image enhancement by applying reinforcement learning (RL) principles. By formulating the enhancement process as a Markov Decision Process (MDP)—where states are represented by image features and actions …

Oral Myeloid Sarcoma: Rare Presentation Of Refractory Acute Myeloid Leukemia With Adverse Molecular Profile, Lauren A. Musial, Naomi Ramer Dds
The New York State Dental Journal
Myeloid sarcoma is a rare extramedullary presentation of acute myeloid leukemia and is especially uncommon in the oral cavity. The presence of myeloid sarcoma may be the initial manifestation of an underlying hematolymphoid disorder or may indicate relapsing disease. We report a case of a 48-year-old male with refractory acute myeloid leukemia who presented with a painful, yellow, plaque-like ulceration on the buccal mucosa. Incisional biopsy demonstrated ulcerated squamous mucosa with a dense infiltrate of large, atypical immunoblastic cells admixed with a prominent population of morphologically atypical eosinophils. These findings were consistent with myeloid sarcoma in the context of the …

This national survey evaluates how pediatric dentists manage patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While most practitioners collect data on oral hygiene and verbal communication, fewer assess social interaction or sensitivity-related characteristics. The study suggests using supplemental intake forms to plan appointments based on individual needs and functioning levels. Key accommodations reported include behavior guidance, modified appointment times, and operatory adjustments. Results indicate that increased professional experience with ASD correlates with more comprehensive data collection and a higher perceived value of that information. Ultimately, partnering with parents is vital for creating successful dental encounters for children with ASD.

“Crimes By The Brave”: Military Installation Impacts On Local Crime, Mara Strader
Honors Program Theses
The influence of the United States military extends beyond its primary installations, as numerous urban areas surround these bases and serve as habitats for many of our nation's heroes. These military communities have become integrated into civilian regions, leading to a confluence of military and civilian zones. Given the diverse populations within these areas, there is a corresponding increase in crime rates; however, there is a notable paucity of literature examining whether these installations affect crime in military-civilian communities.
This study uses 2023 National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) incident-level arrest data, aggregated by geographic proximity to U.S. military installations, to …

Development Of An Adhesive Emulsion Hydrogel For Soft Tissue Reconstruction, David J. Alpert
Dissertations and Theses
Soft tissue filling materials are most commonly associated with various aesthetic, cosmetic procedures, primarily using lightly cross-linked hyaluronic acid to fill wrinkles and give facial features a more youthful appearance. These natural materials are biocompatible but degrade over time while more persistent synthetic fillers may provoke a chronic inflammatory response. Migration from the injection site is also a key factor as this may not only render the implant non- functional but necessitate further procedures for removal of the foreign material. Such concerns are more pronounced for soft tissue reconstruction procedures (e.g., to treat congenital defects or traumatic injuries), which require …

Hybridization And Introgression In Marine Invertebrates: Population Genomics Of Phymactis Papillosa And Asterias Sea Stars, Christopher J. Dookie
Dissertations and Theses
Hybridization and introgression are evolutionary significant processes in marine invertebrates (Sanford & Kelly,2011) yet genome-wide investigations of gene flow in these taxa remain limited relative to vertebrate systems (Marchi et al., 2021). This thesis presents genomic analyses of hybridization and introgression in two marine invertebrates occupying contrasting oceanographic settings and characterized by contrasting genomic datasets: restriction-site associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) SNP data for the eastern Pacific sea anemone Phymactis papillosa and whole genome sequencing (WGS) data for the North Atlantic sea stars Asterias rubens and Asterias forbesi. For each system, I applied coalescent-based species tree inference using CASTER (Zhang …
Mad Or Uncontrollable? Reading Female Madness In Three Gothic Texts, Amy Marie Bueno
Mad Or Uncontrollable? Reading Female Madness In Three Gothic Texts, Amy Marie Bueno
Dissertations and Theses
My thesis employs comparative close reading framed by disability studies to analyze representations of female madness in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, and Isabel Allende’s “If You Touched My Heart.” Drawing on theories of socially constructed disability, it argues that Bertha, Antoinette, and Hortensia are framed as “mad women” not through inherent pathology, but through patriarchal violence, colonial domination, and institutional power. By integrating the social model of disability with feminist theory, this thesis examines how women are rendered disabled within societies influenced by Social Darwinism and eugenic ideologies.
This thesis further incorporates Gothic theory and …

Shared Burden, Potential Space: A Qualitative Study Of How Psychodynamic Therapists Work With Intergenerational Transmission Of Historical Trauma, Shaun J. Halper
Dissertations and Theses
The intergenerational transmission of trauma (ITT) has been investigated since the 1960s, beginning with research on the descendants of Holocaust survivors. Few qualitative studies, however, have taken up how psychodynamic therapists experience their treatments with adult patients with ITT. This study uses Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (APA) to analyze adult ITT treatments from the perspective of psychodynamic psychotherapists. Ten licensed clinicians in the NYC tri-state area participated in semi-structured interviews, which were organized around three research aims: how clinicians conceptualized and identified ITT, what effective clinical interventions they used, and how they understood the impact of therapist-patient sameness or difference (regarding …

Dna Barcoding Complements Citizen Science Identifications In An Arthropod Survey At Governors Island, New York, Malky Gestetner
Dissertations and Theses
Arthropods are declining worldwide, threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and growing urbanization. Efforts to monitor arthropod biodiversity are crucial for conservation policies and for maintaining the ecosystem services provided by these animals in urban environments. Surveys of arthropods have been attempted in many New York neighborhoods, but no formal assessment has been conducted on Governors Island, which harbors 72-acres of parkland within a short boat ride away from Manhattan. This is a deficiency which this study helps to address. Following student-led collection efforts within four Governors Island sites, DNA barcoding was employed to complement specimen identification based on morphology …

Using Oyster Genomics To Understand Human Health, Walker Daniel Bargmann
Public Health Theses
As sessile filter feeders that experience continuous environmental exposure, oysters—particularly Crassostrea virginica—offer a unique opportunity to understand how environmental exposure alters the genome and influence health. Furthermore, oysters must be sorted by size for market value for premium size and taste. However, it requires intensive labor, specialized equipment (tumblers), and is susceptible to environmental risks like pollution. Therefore, it is desirable to produce uniform oysters without machines. However, limitations in the previous reference genome [2] have constrained our understanding of how genes are organized and maintained in oyster populations. To this end, we harvested 240 adult oysters in same location, …
