Through The Lens Of Natural Selection: Understanding The Development And Adoption Of Legal Forms Of Business Organization, Brent J. Horton
Through The Lens Of Natural Selection: Understanding The Development And Adoption Of Legal Forms Of Business Organization, Brent J. Horton
William & Mary Business Law Review
This Article makes three contributions to the scholarship on the development and adoption of legal forms of business organization (LFBO). First, this Article examines how Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection (i.e., variation, selection, and inheritance) can provide an overarching framework that can integrate previous theories of LFBO evolution propounded by Hurst, Blair, Hansmann, Kraakman, and Squire.
Second, Hurst, Blair, Hansmann, Kraakman, and Squire focused primarily on the evolution of joint stock companies and corporations during the American Industrial Revolution. This Article uses the lens of natural selection to explain the development and adoption of more recent forms of business …

Aging is characterized by progressive degenerative changes in tissue organization and function, some of which increase the probability of mortality. Major goals of aging research are to elucidate the series of events that cause degenerative changes, and to identify environmental, pharmacological, and genetic factors that influence these changes; this information might lead to new strategies to extend health span and lifespan. Mechanistic studies of aging depend on accurate and precise descriptions of age-related changes, since these descriptions define the aging phenotype. Here, we review studies that describe age-related changes in C. elegans, including measurements of integrated functions such as behavior …

Seeg-Guided Responsive Neurostimulation To Treat Neocortical Epilepsy: A Multicenter Retrospective Study Of The Efficacy And Safety Of Depth Electrode-Mediated Neuromodulation, Sina Sadeghzadeh, Jon T Willie, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVES: Pivotal trials have established the effectiveness of the Responsive Neurostimulation System (RNS® System) in treating focal epilepsy. In clinical trials, depth leads were primarily used to treat mesial temporal seizure onsets while cortical strip leads were used to treat neocortical seizure onsets. Here, we systematically analyze the safety and efficacy of stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG)-guided depth leads to provide responsive stimulation to neocortical gray matter.
METHODS: Patients were stratified as strong responders (>median cohort seizure reduction %), weak responders (>0% and ≤median cohort seizure reduction %), and anti-responders (≤0%) based on percent seizure reduction at 1 year post-implant (1-Y). …

BACKGROUND: Dysregulated inflammatory processes have been associated with severe COVID-19 disease. Ceramides, bioactive lipids involved in inflammatory signaling, have been utilized to predict outcomes in chronic cardiometabolic diseases and pancreatic cancer, but their role in COVID-19 remains unknown.
METHODS: This observational study prospectively enrolled patients with COVID-19 disease who required intubation and mechanical ventilation at a Midwestern academic hospital between August 2020 and March 2021. Plasma ceramides 16:0 (C16), 22:0 (C22), and 24:0 (C24) and inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR, D-Dimer, and ferritin) were collected and organized weekly from symptom onset for up to 6 weeks. Patients were grouped by in-hospital …
Nested Ecosystems Theory For Conceptualizing Brain Tumors, Lori A Forster, David H Gutmann
Nested Ecosystems Theory For Conceptualizing Brain Tumors, Lori A Forster, David H Gutmann
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The application of advanced multi-omic methodologies to studying brain tumors has culminated in the appreciation that these cancers function as ecosystems that depend on the interactions of a diverse collection of cell types and signals. This connectivity operates not only at the level of the cancer cell, in which variants create new growth dependencies, but also between tumor cells and the immediate tumor microenvironment, between tumor cells and cell populations residing elsewhere in the brain tissue or body, and in response to extracorporeal factors. The cellular and molecular relationships within these four interrelated strata (intracellular, extracellular, intracorporeal and extracorporeal) act …

Juvenile hormone (JH) is essential for maintaining juvenile status and promoting reproduction in insects, yet the transcriptional regulation of JH biosynthesis remains poorly understood. Previous transcriptomic studies of the Drosophila ring gland—which is composed of the corpus allatum (CA), prothoracic gland (PG), and corpora cardiaca (CC)—have treated the ring gland as a single tissue. As a result, these approaches lacked the resolution necessary to dissect JH biosynthesis and its regulation in a cell-type-specific manner. To overcome this limitation, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of 7,919 cells isolated from the larval ring glands. This analysis resolved distinct transcriptional profiles for …
The Poly Problem In Zoning: Redefining "Family" For A Changing Society, Aric K. Short, Tanya Pierce
The Poly Problem In Zoning: Redefining "Family" For A Changing Society, Aric K. Short, Tanya Pierce
Faculty Scholarship
Single-family zoning has long dictated not only where people may live but also with whom. Although extensively critiqued for perpetuating racial and economic exclusion, these laws also privilege relationships defined by blood, marriage, or adoption and marginalize nontraditional families. This Article focuses on a particularly overlooked group: polyamorous families who often face legal uncertainty, social exclusion, and housing discrimination due to restrictive zoning definitions of “family.”
As polyamory gains cultural visibility and increasing legal recognition—through West 49th Street, LLC v. O’Neill and municipal reforms in cities like Somerville and Cambridge—now is the time to examine zoningÊs role in reinforcing outdated …

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) research relies on large datasets and advanced statistical models. However, individual population studies often lack sufficient sample size for conclusive results. Harmonizing cognitive test data across studies can address this gap, despite differences in testing protocols. This study harmonizes cognitive data from three major AD cohorts to support robust clinical–pathological modelling. Methods: Information from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (N = 1446); Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (N = 1764); and Open Access Series of Imaging Studies-3 (N = 440) were integrated, including cognitive scores, demographics, genetics, and clinical and neuroimaging data. Neuropsychological tests relevant to …

Dna Stability In Aqueous Solutions: A Case Study On Poly A - Poly T Duplex Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Haripriya Chennuru
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This thesis relies on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which apply the AMBER software package to analyze the structural stability, energetics, and dynamics of Poly A - Poly T DNA duplexes. This work is mainly concerned with testing configurations of non-bonded interaction cutoffs (12 Å and 15 Å) on the Generalized Born solvation models (IGB1 and IGB2) to determine the most appropriate conditions regarding computation time and physical reliability in DNA molecular dynamics. The solvation models enable effective simulation of solvent effects, facilitating the calculation of simulation parameters to evaluate structural stability within different environmental conditions. Overall, the performance indicates that …

Age And Sex Impact The Role Of Thrombospondin-2 And Thrombospondin-5 In Response To Hindlimb Ischemia, Irene Helenowski, Ashley Peters, Melissa Rangel, Corinne Bunn Md, Xuerong Wang, Kristopher Maier, Vivian Gahtan
Biostatistics Collaborative Core: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Peripheral arterial disease progression to critical limb ischemia remains a significant burden in the aged, necessitating revascularization. Therapies to enhance neovascularization, such as angiogenesis or arteriogenesis, may provide an option for patients not suitable for surgery. The thrombospondins (TSPs) are secreted matricellular glycoproteins, with TSP-1, TSP-2, and TSP-5 implicated in neovascularization. Currently, there is little data regarding the effects of TSP-2, TSP-5, sex, and aging on angiogenesis and arteriogenesis. In vitro, the effect of TSP-2 or TSP-5 on early or late passage endothelial cell (EC) tubule formation or disruption was assessed. In vivo, angiogenesis, and arteriogenesis in male and female, …
