Background: Wearable fitness trackers have become a valuable tool in public health research due to their ability to collect large-scale, individual-level data at a low cost. Because of this, wearables have the potential to mitigate the urgent need for health research in low-resource settings. However, their use has been largely limited to high-income settings, and a major challenge remains: high rates of missing data. This problem may be exacerbated in low-resource environments where logistical and operational barriers further complicate data collection. Wearable sleep data collected in an urban informal settlement in Uganda during The Onward Project on Well-being and Adversity …

Ketone bodies have traditionally been recognized as glucose-sparing energy sources, with hepatic ketogenesis and peripheral ketolysis serving pivotal functions in maintaining energy homeostasis during fasting. Although they are commonly seen as harmful due to their link with ketoacidosis, recent studies emphasize their roles in organ protection. This has sparked interest in their possible use as a treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, we examined both exogenous and endogenous ketone body supplementation in adenine-induced kidney injury in mice. Supplementation with the ketone body precursor 1,3-butanediol significantly improved adenine-induced renal fibrosis, inflammation, and apoptotic cell death. However, genetically deleting …

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), a common and severe complication of preterm birth, and subsequent post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), have predominantly concentrated on the secretory function of the choroid plexus (ChP), with considerably less emphasis on its barrier function. We hypothesized that PHH is associated with immune-related alterations in the junction biology of ChP. METHODS: We examined differences in tight junctions and macrophages using a neonatal mouse model of PHH (n = 40) and in vitro ChP explants (n = 22), as well as human post-mortem samples (n = 6). To test our hypothesis, we employed histology, immunofluorescence, magnetic …

Effects Of Types And Amount Of Organic Matter On The Engineering Properties Of Soil, Afaq H. Malleh, Mohammed Y. Fattah, Hussein H. Karim
Engineering and Technology Journal
Organic soils exhibit highly variable geotechnical behavior due to differences in the type, content, and decomposition state of organic matter, which are often inadequately distinguished in engineering practice. This study investigates the influence of organic matter origin on soil behavior through a comparative analysis of sapric organic soils and sewage sludge soil tested under identical one-dimensional consolidation conditions. Laboratory tests included physical characterization, standard consolidation tests under vertical stresses of 200 kPa and 800 kPa, post-consolidation organic matter measurements, and microstructural analyses using SEM–EDS and XRD. The results show that increasing sapric organic matter content from 23% to 35% led …

The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek
The Dangers Of Social Media In Political Theory, Eden M. Shimanek
Global Tides
Increasing political polarization is a prominent feature of the twenty-first-century political landscape, with social media playing a significant role. This essay evaluates social media as a political platform through Hannah Arendt’s notion of the Vita Activa, which describes the political realm and the ideas of totalitarianism. Using this framework, I argue that the surging political use of social media creates digital “echo chambers” that result from the loss of human plurality, which ultimately marks the diverse nature of the political realm. I would continue to argue that these chambers evolve into the notion that Arendt notes as world alienation or …

Optically Isolated, Current-Controlled Closed-Loop System For Magnetically-Mediated Temporal Interference Neuromodulation (M-Ttis), Olexandr Lozovyi
Defensive Publications Series
We disclose a neuromodulation system implementing closed-loop, magnetically-mediated temporal interference stimulation (m-tTIS). While inspired by traditional electric tTIS, the disclosed architecture utilizes coherent magnetic field synthesis for non-invasive tissue penetration. To suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) below functional detection thresholds and limit hardware-induced demodulation artifacts, an "Absolute Optical Air-Gap" architecture is detailed. The device is partitioned into galvanically isolated domains, interconnected exclusively via plastic optical fiber (POF). The power stage employs a Class D amplifier with a second-order LC filter and hardware current sensing for amplitude stabilization. Control is based on adaptive optimization of physiological spectral metrics. Firmware execution provides deterministic, …
The Role Of Emerin In Myogenic Differentiation, Nicholas Marano
The Role Of Emerin In Myogenic Differentiation, Nicholas Marano
Theses and Dissertations
The nucleus harbors genetic material encapsulated by the nuclear envelope which is composed of an inner and outer nuclear membrane. The establishment and organization of chromatin at the INM is essential for cell fate during the differentiation program. Integral INM proteins are responsible for chromatin organization at the nuclear envelope. Emerin is a highly conserved type II integral INM protein with roles in chromatin organization, cell signaling, and nuclear structure. Mutations in the emerin gene cause Emery Dreifuss Muscular Dystrophy 1 (EDMD1). Emerin is ubiquitously expressed, but loss of emerin function affects specifically skeletal muscle and cardiac tissue. The precise …

Auditory Stimulation Rescues Cognitive Deficit In, Mohamed Ouardouz, Amanda E Hernan, J Matthew Mahoney, Rodney C Scott
Faculty Research 2026
Background/Objectives: Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a triplet repeat expansion in the Fmr1 gene leading to the loss of Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (Fmr1 protein). The loss of Fmr1 protein modulates many cell biological processes and leads to the emergence of intellectual disability and autism. FXS is modeled in Fmr1-KO mice that display features consistent with human FXS, including hypersensitivity, cognitive and learning deficits, hyperactivity and audiogenic seizures. Here, we investigated the effect of auditory stimulation during a range of developmental stages on recognition memory and sociability deficits in Fmr1-KO mice. Methods: Fmr1-KO …

Children of mothers with childhood trauma are at an increased risk for mental health problems, yet the most influential family-related mediators of this intergenerational transmission remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized effect sizes from 29 studies (n = 352,279 dyads) examining psychosocial family-level mediators between maternal childhood trauma and child mental health. We identified 380 simple and 40 serial mediation paths across four domains: child characteristics, maternal characteristics, parent–child relationship factors, and household characteristics. Maternal characteristics showed the largest pooled effects (proportion median [PM]: 31.2%; ratio median [RM]: 0.21), particularly maternal mental health (PM: 36.0%), maternal attachment style …

Ribosomal Stress In The Pathogenesis And Treatment Of T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Kimberly Bridget Johansson
Ribosomal Stress In The Pathogenesis And Treatment Of T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Kimberly Bridget Johansson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive hematologic malignancy in which activating mutations in the Notch pathway are thought to contribute to transformation, in part, through activation of c-Myc. Increased expression of c-Myc induces oncogenic stress that can lead to apoptosis through the Mdm2-p53 tumor suppressor pathway. Since the great majority of T-ALL cases maintain wildtype MDM2 and TP53, we hypothesized that T-ALL cells are selectively sensitive to MDM2 inhibition. Treatment with idasanutlin, an MDM2 inhibitor, although only inducing modest apoptosis in T-ALL cells, resulted in a significant upregulation of pro-apoptotic BH3 domain genes BAX and BBC3. This prompted …
Unraveling Hydrologic And Hydrochemical Processes Based On Long-Term Concentration–Discharge Analysis In The Green Lake 4 Catchment, Colorado Front Range, Usa, Fengjing Liu
Michigan Tech Publications
Concentration–discharge (C-Q) relationships were analyzed over decadal, annual, and seasonal timescales from water years 1982 to 2020 to understand hydrologic and hydrochemical processes in the Green Lake 4 catchment, Green Lakes Valley, Colorado Front Range. Geogenic solutes, along with the magnitude of stable isotopes, were dominated by a strong (p < .05) C-Q power law (C = aQb, where a and b are constants from the curve fitting, with b usually termed the b-coefficient) and consistent patterns over various timescales. The b-coefficients of geogenic solutes were negative, suggesting that those solutes primarily originated from groundwater with higher concentrations and diluted by shallow source waters with lower …

Inside 'N Out: Etv2 Specification Of Hemangiogenic Lineages From Flk1+ Mesoderm, Dereck Antonio Shakeel Alleyne
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The cardiovascular system is generated by mesodermal progenitors that give rise to endothelial, hematopoietic and muscle (smooth muscle and cardiomyocyte) lineages. Although vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), its receptor, FLK1/KDR and the transcription factor ETV2 are critically required for hemangiogenic specification, Flk1 and Etv2 expression has been observed in other mesodermal derivatives. During gastrulation, mesodermal progenitors are specified to contribute to the cardiovascular system; however, the early divergence of hemangiogenic and muscle progenitors, and their shared marker expression, complicates identification of common mesoderm progenitor populations contributing to both lineages. In this dissertation, I demonstrate how Flk1+ and Etv2+ lineage relationships …
