Background: Current United States palliative care practice guidelines are intended to cover care across all age groups. Previous research with pediatric providers and caregivers concluded that pediatric hospice and palliative care have unique attributes. Not known is how adolescent hospice and palliative care patients understand quality palliative care. The purpose of this study was to characterize and define quality of care domains as described by adolescent and young adult patients receiving home-based hospice and palliative care.

Exploring Primary Care Providers’ Compassionate Care And Their Evidence-Based Practice With Death, Grief, And Loss: Patient Experience And Perspective, Kathryn Krzykala

Research on primary care providers’ (PCPs) education regarding Death, Grief, and Loss (DGL) remains limited. Specifically, data is lacking regarding patients' perceptions and opinions on what they need and expect from their PCPs regarding grief and loss. This exploratory mixed-method study comprised 146 participants who had experienced death and non-death loss. It examined participants' perceptions of 1) PCP compassion, 2) PCP utilization of evidence-based grief and loss practices, 3) their own level of comfort discussing DGL with their PCPs during medical visits, and 4) their personal grief and loss experiences. As individuals age, they often experience gradual declines in cognitive abilities that ultimately affect their quality of life and independence. Severe cognitive decline is not necessarily a natural or universal part of the aging process and tends to be exacerbated by various neurodegenerative diseases, most notably Alzheimer's disease (Colita et al., 2024). There have been promising outcomes of animal assisted interventions in improving the conditions of several populations and spaces, including educational, rehabilitative, and therapeutic settings. Abstract This study investigates and expands understanding of how care work, widowhood, social support, and physical activity intersect in the lives of older recent widows. The study addresses three primary research questions examining the duration and intensity of care work, pre- and post-death social support, and factors that influenced widows’ physical activity before and after the death of their spouses. Thirty semi-structured, face-to-face interviews conducted with heterosexual widows aged 60 and older residing in Upstate New York who were widowed within 6–24 months prior to interview. Background: The field of emergency preparedness is often considered a limitedly recognized aspect of healthcare; however, it serves an integral component of patient and worker safety. While an important field, there is limited data focused on the field pertaining to salaries of workers, resources utilized and produced, and the typical working environment. The purpose of this project was to assess salary and other demographic markers of healthcare emergency preparedness professionals in the United States.

This reflection was written for and delivered to the community of the Saint John's School of Theology and Seminary on February 19, 2026. It reflects on Isaiah 58:6–8 and the theme of Lenten fasting, as part of the Midday Prayer Service during the first week of Lent. The reflection was composed and offered in the context of the ongoing immigration enforcement raids carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Minneapolis. It invites the community into a deeper consideration of the Christian response to injustice during the Lenten season.

Objectives: To assess the 1-year risk of all-cause hospitalization or mortality associated with initiation of sodium glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) compared with renin angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) among Medicare beneficiaries with heart failure (HF) and Alzheimers disease and related dementias (ADRD).   Methods: This cohort study used 5% 2012-2020 Medicare fee-for-service claims data to identify beneficiaries with HF and ADRD who newly initiated SGLT2i or RASi between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2019. Baseline demographics, comorbidities, and medication use were included as covariates. Propensity score matching and standardized differences were used to assess covariate balance between the two treatment groups. …

Objectives: Opioid tapering has increased in recent years with the implementation of national prescribing guidelines. This study aimed to examine the association of opioid tapering with takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in older Medicare beneficiaries. Methods: A case-crossover design was employed using 5% Medicare administrative claims data (2012-2020). Older adults (65 years) with TCM or MACE (composite of myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death) were identified, and the date of the first occurrence was designated as the index date. BACKGROUND: Patients with complications of advanced liver disease experience high rates of hospital readmission after discharge. Transitional care models have improved outcomes in other chronic conditions, but their efficacy in liver disease care remains uncertain. This randomized trial evaluates the effectiveness of a tailored transitional care model-the Transitional Liver Clinic (TLC)-in reducing readmissions, improving quality of life, and enhancing patient satisfaction for patients with advanced liver disease.

As populations age and chronic illness increasingly characterizes the final stages of life in the United States, end-of-life doulas (EOLDs) have emerged as non-medical practitioners who support dying people and their families through education, companionship, advocacy, and ritualized care. Drawing on a thematic analysis of 18 semi-structured interviews with practicing EOLDs across the United States, this thesis examines how EOLDs conceptualize a “good death,” navigate emotionally intensive work, and sustain themselves in an unregulated and often marginal professional landscape. Situating EOLD practice within anthropological scholarship on death and dying, the study highlights the ways EOLDs challenge dominant biomedical narratives that …
