Fostering Reading: Review Of A College Bridge Program For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing High School Students, Cara Wilmot

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This mixed-methods formative program evaluation examined the reading component of a summer College Bridge Program (CBP) designed for high school students who are deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh). Persistent disparities in reading outcomes among d/Dhh students have been linked to differences in language access, communication access, and opportunities to receive specialized instruction. Using the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) evaluation model, this study evaluated how the CBP identified and addressed students' reading needs, implemented evidence-based instructional practices, and supported reading development through a three-week summer program.

Star Vale. Design For Gentle Transition, Nadia Sue Juneide Jan 2026

Star Vale. Design For Gentle Transition, Nadia Sue Juneide

Grado en Diseño de Interiores

While perhaps a bit unorthodox, the idea to design a pediatric palliative care facility for my thesis really came from watching a New York Times video on the lack of it in the United States (NYT, 6). Fascinated, this lead to a rabbit hole on what consisted of palliative care, what options there were for parents, and what it looked like in Spain, which concluded in me seeing that the problem is the same here (Porqueviven, 7). A year later, when it was time to chose a topic to design for, I thought I would try to tackle what I …

This study investigates the representation and cross-cultural mediation of contemporary Chinese ink art within New York’s primary art market. Using Fu Qiumeng Fine Art (FQM) as a core case study, the research adopts a qualitative methodological framework that integrates document analysis, visual analysis, and semi-structured field interviews to examine how the gallery operates as a cultural intermediary. It explores how FQM defines and frames “Contemporary Ink Art,” selects and presents artists, and translates the aesthetic and philosophical foundations of this tradition for Western audiences. The findings show that FQM positions ink art not merely as a medium-based practice but as …

Will You Let Me In?, Irene Piazza Jan 2026

Will You Let Me In?, Irene Piazza

Theses and Dissertations

Imposed borders are everywhere: The borders created by stanchions during bureaucratic lines, the borders of a country, the borders of a page. Humans are forced to follow them. Borders are imposed structures that dictate a way to move, a way to write, a way to be confined. But what happens when those borders aren’t followed? What happens when someone decides to walk through the stanchion belt by crouching under it or sliding its buckle open? What happens if a person decides to walk outside of the paved pathway? What happens if someone crosses a border or writes beyond the page …

To Put It Simply, Men Are Like Kites., Yangyang Zhang Jan 2026

To Put It Simply, Men Are Like Kites., Yangyang Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the performative professionalization of So-called “emotional mentors” on mainstream Chinese social media platforms, specifically Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok). and its impact on the contemporary Chinese emotional landscape. Through a series of undercover investigations in livestreams, I analyze the rhetorical tactics and professional jargon used by these “Gurus” to attract and monetize vulnerable audiences.

The research highlights a critical paradox: while promising emotional clarity, these methods from “Love Gurus” often corrupt the sincerity of intimate bonds, resulting in significant emotional labor and self-doubt for Female. The project aims to demystify this predatory industry and its role …

Memebuddy: Dialog-Style Audio Representations For Engaging Non-Visual Meme Experiences, Chirag Bhansali, Vikas Ashok, Hae-Na Lee

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Image memes are a pervasive form of online communication, widely used to convey humor, opinions, and cultural references. Prior work has explored making memes accessible to blind users, primarily through auto-generated descriptive captions. While these approaches improve comprehensibility and sometimes incorporate prosodic or emotional cues, they often fail to capture the humor, narrative structure, and contextual nuances that make memes engaging. We present MemeBuddy, a system that models memes as dialog, generating structured, multi-turn audio representations using role-based speakers. MemeBuddy reinterprets a meme as a conversation between two speakers, integrating extracted meme text with contextual knowledge implicitly inferred by a …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This national survey evaluates how pediatric dentists manage patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While most practitioners collect data on oral hygiene and verbal communication, fewer assess social interaction or sensitivity-related characteristics. The study suggests using supplemental intake forms to plan appointments based on individual needs and functioning levels. Key accommodations reported include behavior guidance, modified appointment times, and operatory adjustments. Results indicate that increased professional experience with ASD correlates with more comprehensive data collection and a higher perceived value of that information. Ultimately, partnering with parents is vital for creating successful dental encounters for children with ASD.

“Is This Really Funny?” Humor, Rape Myths, And Social Semiotics In Nigerian Comedy Skits, Grace Oluwatofunmi Adeyemo

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how rape myth narratives are normalized through humor in Nigerian comedy skits. While existing research has identified rape-supportive beliefs in digital entertainment, it has paid less attention to the processes through which these meanings become socially acceptable. Guided by social semiotics, the study analyzes how semiotic resources use humor to normalize rape myth narratives in Nigerian comedy skits. Using a qualitative design, twelve purposively selected Nigerian comedy skits on YouTube were analyzed. The findings reveal that refusal is constructed as temporary, persistence is portrayed as effort, men's refusal is framed as abnormal, and consent is shaped by …

Therefore, there is a need for a transdisciplinary systems approach to visualize the interdependency among agents and understand the dominant patterns that shape the kidney allocation system.

First, this research presented an incremental hierarchical system engineering approach in identifying the agents’ needs and behaviors toward the complex systems’ goal of maximizing deceased donor kidney utilization and reducing kidney discard. The hierarchical systems approach linked with model-based system engineering aided in eliciting agents’ …

Dna Landscape Tool: An Interactive Webpage, Kerstyn Gay Jan 2026

Dna Landscape Tool: An Interactive Webpage, Kerstyn Gay

Theses

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule that carries genetic information that makes up every organism. DNA is typically introduced into the biology curriculum starting in high school and depending on an individual's educational path can continue through college. Although taught frequently during school, elements of DNA can be difficult for students to grasp, due to the different visual representations of DNA found in various resources. For instance, when comparing an illustration of a chemically accurate nucleotide base to an abstract visualization of a chromosome learners often aren’t given enough scaffolding to see how one representation relates to the other, which …
