Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
This qualitative case study explores physically challenged students’ experiences in PATH-fit courses within Philippine higher education, investigating their challenges and adaptive strategies. Through in-depth interviews with five students and two instructors in Pagadian City, researchers uncovered significant barriers, including exercise difficulties, physical discomfort, and social exclusion that profoundly impacted course participation. Despite facing substantial obstacles, students demonstrated remarkable resilience by developing innovative coping mechanisms such as proactive instructor communication, creative alternative activity engagement, and strategic leveraging of written assignments. Employing Resiliency Theory, the research challenged conventional disability perspectives, emphasizing that students’ true potential lies in psychological flexibility and problem-solving skills …

Faculty Scholarship
Background
Creatine is one of the most extensively studied ergogenic aids, with over three decades of research supporting its role in exercise performance, recovery, and health.
Methods
This narrative review summarizes the historical development of creatine supplementation and evaluates evidence regarding its mechanisms, efficacy across active, athletic populations (e.g. strength, endurance, team-sport), and tactical (e.g. military, law enforcement) populations, and its safety profile.
Results
The evidence suggests that creatine enhances phosphocreatine resynthesis and cellular energy availability, resulting in consistent improvements in high-intensity exercise performance, training adaptations, lean body mass, strength, and power. Additional findings indicate that creatine may attenuate exercise-induced …

Same, But Better: Modernizing A Professional Soccer Team’S Logo, Jessica A. Halladay
Graphic Communication
Valencia CF is a historic soccer club with a highly recognizable crest, and this project focuses on modernizing that identity while preserving its core elements. Rather than creating a full rebrand, the project follows an identity evolution approach, refining the crest to improve clarity and adaptability across digital and physical applications. Guided by research in brand identity, social identity, and visual perception, the redesign focuses on four key elements: the bat, crest shape, typography, and soccer ball. Each component was simplified through iterative sketching and critique-based refinement to improve readability and consistency while maintaining recognizability. The final design demonstrates how …

A Borophosphate Glass Doped With Cobalt Oxide Improves Skeletal Muscle Structure And Function In Myopathic Mice, Jacob A. Kendra, Alexandra G. Naman, Rebekah L. Blatt, Carla D. Zingariello, Richard K. Brow, Steven S. Segal, Aaron B. Morton
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Skeletal muscle myopathy remains a significant cause of disability with limited treatment strategies. Advancements in tissue engineering have led to the development of borophosphate bioactive glasses (BPBGs) capable of enhancing skeletal muscle structure and function. Using a mouse model of severe myopathy (D2.mdx), we investigated muscle force, regeneration, angiogenesis and inflammation at 14, 70 and 140 days post-treatment (dpt). Tibialis anterior (TA) muscles of D2.mdx mice that received a single injection of cobalt oxide-doped BPBG (CoO-TRIM) particles exhibit greater active force, myofiber size, and regeneration through 70 dpt compared to control D2.mdx mice injected with Saline. Vascular endothelial growth factor …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sleep is essential for exercise recovery. Moderate exercise can improve sleep (e.g., total sleep duration, quality, number of awakenings, sleep latency, etc.), whereas high-intensity or unfamiliar exercise may induce muscle damage and acute inflammation, thereby disrupting sleep. Dehydration-related increases in arginine vasopressin (AVP) have also been shown to impair sleep. Recent evidence indicates that 24-h fluid restriction impairs sleep initiation and prolongs sleep duration, whereas our previous findings indicate that completing intense exercise in a dehydrated state may not alter sleep. However, the effect of fluid intake on sleep characteristics (i.e., duration, quality, latency, depth, satisfaction, number of awakenings, and …

The Effect Of Dehydration On Muscle Fluid Content During Recovery From Damage In Active Men, Jalyn Dunlap, Casey Appell, Trinity N. Domonkos, Karina Olvera, Sarah Walper, Christian J. Hoebelheinrich, Seth Bernardino, Larry Munger, Hui-Ying Luk
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Eccentric muscle damage triggers an immune response leading to immune cell infiltration, which increases intramuscular osmotic pressure driving fluid movement from the extracellular space into the intramuscular space. Conversely, dehydration decreases plasma volume which increases extracellular osmotic pressure driving fluid movement from the intramuscular space to the extracellular space. Given these opposing forces on fluid movement, the overall direction of fluid movement during recovery from muscle damage in a dehydrated state is unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of dehydration on intramuscular fluid content following muscle damage in active men. METHODS: Nine active men (21±4yr; 175.0±6.5cm; 76.9±10.4kg; lean …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is a key adaptation to resistance training, yet the time when measurable growth occurs remains unknown in previously untrained women. Evaluating hypertrophic changes over a short intervention period has important implication for training adaptations and program design. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to quantify the time course of muscle size cross sectional area (CSA) and morphological adaptations of the rectus femoris (RF) following 8-weeks of resistance training in previously untrained, college-aged women. METHODS: Twenty-two healthy, untrained female participants (age, 18-35, BMI, 22.65±2.61 kg/m2) were randomized to either an 8-week resistance-training group (TRAIN) …
