Vaccination elicits systemic immune responses that extend beyond antibody and lymphocyte activation, engaging coordinated metabolic and lipid pathways that modulate immune function. Nevertheless, how systemic molecular responses differ across COVID-19 vaccine platforms, including closely related mRNA platforms, remains poorly understood. Here, we performed integrated plasma proteomic, lipidomic, and metabolomic profiling of 53 SARS-CoV-2–naïve adults vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. Samples were analysed across multiple timepoints using differential analysis and DIABLO-based multi-omics integration. Our findings reveal distinct platform-associated multi-omic molecular signatures not captured by unsupervised analyses alone. Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination was associated with widespread increases in immunoglobulin and complement …
Sheep Industry Pivot Project: Global Comparative Review, James Smith
Sheep Industry Pivot Project: Global Comparative Review, James Smith
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Executive summary: This report forms the first stage of a two-year project led by Edith Cowan University to identify and commercialise new market pathways for Australian sheep products and by-products. The project responds to a period of significant structural change within the industry, most notably the legislated phase-out of live sheep exports by sea by May 2028, which is reshaping market dynamics and supply chain configurations. As an initial global benchmark and review, this report examines international best practice and emerging opportunities to inform industry transition, with the broader project focused on supporting producers and processors to develop and test …

A Delicate Balance: Experiences And Wellbeing Of Pre-Service Teachers Navigating Demands And Benefits Of Studying While Working As A Teacher, Caroline F. Mansfield, Jane Kirkham, Narelle Lemon, Lisa Papatraianou
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In the face of a global teacher shortage various strategies are being used to bolster the teaching workforce. In Australia, one such strategy has been to employ pre-service teachers under alternative permission to teach contracts. Given the recency of this phenomenon, there is little empirical evidence about the impact of this strategy on pre-service teachers, specifically how this experience may influence their wellbeing and retention in the profession. Utilising the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, this study explores the benefits and demands of alternative permission to teach arrangements on pre-service teachers, and in particular the impact on their wellbeing and career …

A Survey Of Australian Healthcare Practitioners’ Perspectives On Goal Setting In Occupational Rehabilitation, Grace Redden, Christopher J. Stevens, Jodie Cochrane Wilkie, Syeda Farah Zahir, Christian Swann
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Nearly half a million Australians experience workplace injury or illness each year, and return-to-work rates have declined, particularly for psychological conditions. Practitioners use goal setting to structure return-to-work planning and are directed by national guidance to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) goals. How practitioners apply these criteria across different injuries and illnesses is not well understood. This study examined practitioners’ perspectives on goal setting in workers’ compensation rehabilitation in Australia, with a focus on SMART goals.
Methods: A cross-sectional online survey of Australian healthcare practitioners who treated physical conditions, psychological conditions, or both, was conducted. Quantitative data …

Analysis Of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Tailings Dam Slopes Subjected To Surface Loads, Francis Otieno, Sanjay Kumar Shukla
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study presents an extensive numerical investigation of the stability of a geosynthetic-reinforced tailings dam embankment slope subjected to surface loads from retained pyrite tailings slurry upstream of the dam. The analysis was performed on an embankment with an inclination of 1V:2.5H on the upstream slope and 1V:2H on the downstream slope. The dam embankment rests directly on previously deposited pyrite tailings that have dried over time and are sufficiently consolidated to support the embankment. The variable parameters considered in this study include the geosynthetic reinforcement length across the failure zone, effective cohesion (c′), effective angle of internal friction (ϕ′), …
Belonging-With Country: Diffracting Equity, Inclusion And Care In Australian Early Childhood Education, Amanda J. Binns, Elizabeth Jackson-Barrett
Belonging-With Country: Diffracting Equity, Inclusion And Care In Australian Early Childhood Education, Amanda J. Binns, Elizabeth Jackson-Barrett
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article revisits the widely used yet underexamined concepts of equity, inclusion and belonging in Australian early childhood education. Building on Sumsion and Wong's interrogation of ‘belonging’ in the original Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for Australia V2.0, it traces how the concept has been taken up across policy, practice and scholarship, including EYLF V2.0 and contemporary work on care, book sharing and cultural responsiveness. It argues that these approaches, while well intentioned, often individualise belonging, obscure ongoing colonial relations and privilege Euro-Western, human-centred ontologies that normalise some children, families and places while marginalising others, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
How might belonging to Country guide us toward reciprocity, care and renewal in a time of breached planetary boundaries? Drawing on Noongar knowledge and the environmental humanities, this research paper explores how homes, gardens, farms, energy systems and investments are already entangled within Country, inviting a shift from separation to nurture. We propose that ideas around ownership, social mobility, comfort and growth shape suburban identities (including our own) and inhibit regenerative change. Within high-carbon economies such as Australia, ecological limits are often experienced as external constraints on human flourishing. When people recognise themselves as part of Country, however, limits can …

In an era of large-scale stressors, scientists are racing to collate equally large datasets to answer macroecological questions. Coral reefs lie at the forefront of system-wide transformations and are thus the focus of many macroecological studies. A lack of standardised, global data across time, however, has resulted in the coalition of data from disparate sources, often comprising different survey methods. However, can we make the same ecological inferences from data collected using different survey protocols? Here, we employed two of the most common reef fish census techniques—point counts and belt transects—of varying survey effort (time and area) to assess whether …

Fresh fruits play a vital role in ensuring food and nutritional security, while also making significant contributions to global trade. However, due to their highly perishable nature, they are susceptible to postharvest losses during storage, transportation, and marketing. Edible coatings (ECs) and edible films are effective postharvest preservation technologies for retarding senescence and preserving fruit quality. This review provides a comprehensive update on recent developments in ECs and films aimed at reducing postharvest losses in fresh fruits. These coatings are formulated using biopolymers, including polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids, along with food-grade additives. The review discusses how ECs modulate postharvest physiology …

Extending The Theory Of Planned Behaviour To Explain Contract Cheating In The Age Of Generative Ai: Evidence From Australian Higher Education, Madugoda Gunaratnege Senali
Extending The Theory Of Planned Behaviour To Explain Contract Cheating In The Age Of Generative Ai: Evidence From Australian Higher Education, Madugoda Gunaratnege Senali
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Academic contract cheating (CC) poses a significant challenge for Higher Education (HE), a problem that has become more complex with the increasing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) tools. While similarity detection software can flag AI-generated text, it remains ineffective in identifying CC, potentially displacing misconduct rather than reducing it. Drawing on and extending the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), this study examines how traditional TPB constructs and technology-mediated perceptual factors jointly influence students’ intentions and behaviours related to CC within the Australian HE context. The findings reveal significant direct and indirect pathways linking perceived instructor involvement, detection awareness, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
From the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S–O–R) framework, this study proposes a serial mediation model to examine psychological drivers of residents’ support for sustainable tourism development (STD) in central Vietnam. Specifically, this study investigates how perceived empowerment and place attachment as stimulus influence residents’ attitudes (ATT), subjective norms (SN), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) as organism, which in turn shape their intentions to support STD as response. The study empirically surveyed 686 residents engaging with tourism services in three cities, namely Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam, in central Vietnam. This study utilised both online and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Among many firms in emerging economies, investments in HR analytics promise strategic insight yet often fail to translate into measurable sustainability gains. This study theorises and tests how HR analytics capability drives supply chain sustainability through the strategic enactment of Green HRM (GHRM). Drawing on dynamic capability theory and socio-technical systems theory, we propose that HR analytics capability indirectly enhances supply chain sustainability by enabling firms to design and implement data-informed GHRM strategies that align workforce practices with environmental objectives. We further argue that this indirect effect is contingent on two distinct enabling conditions: AI-driven capability, which strengthens the translation …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a participatory work design intervention to improve job quality and mental well-being in a disability support organization. We investigate whether the intervention is associated with changes in burnout (i.e. disengagement, work-related, client-related), and we assess the changes in work design through which the intervention has its effects. We hypothesized that the effects of the work design intervention on burnout occur via changes in social support (i.e. co-worker instrumental and emotional support) and job demands (i.e. role conflict, time pressure). 72 participants were involved (N = 21 in the intervention group, 66.7% female; N = …

The accurate diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux pulmonary micro-aspiration has only become possible recently with the introduction of a novel technique of reflux micro-aspiration scintigraphy study combined with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) combined with x-ray tomography (CT) in a hybrid instrument (1-3). This has allowed the accurate diagnosis of pulmonary and airway contamination with refluxate. Previously only patients with large volume symptomatic reflux aspiration were diagnosed clinically (Mendelson syndrome) or by 2-dimentional barium meal or an older plantar (2 dimensional) technique of scintigraphic aspiration studies. The concept of reflux micro-aspiration has been implicated in multiple pulmonary diseases but …

Recent interest in the diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that make up the skin microbiome has led to numerous studies investigating the microbiome in healthy skin and in dermatological diseases. An imbalance of the normal skin microbial flora can cause some skin diseases, and current culture techniques are often unable to detect a microorganism to further our understanding of the clinical–microbiological correlates of disease and dysbiosis. Atopic dermatitis and rosacea are presentations that General practitioners (GPs) often manage that may have an infective or microbiological component and can be challenging to treat. Further research using culture-independent techniques is …

Policy engagement is key to promoting quality physical education yet it has been identified as a ‘grand challenge’ for Health and/or Physical Education (H/PE) internationally. All H/PE professionals, including teacher educators, have a collective responsibility to engage with policy but existing research tells us little about how H/PE teacher educators (H/PETEs) understand and engage with policy. It is important to examine H/PETEs conceptualisations of policy for a few reasons, not least because teacher educators play a crucial role in supporting future generations of teachers who themselves will need to engage with policy as a core feature of their professional lives. …
The Transformational Possibilities Of Liberal Vocationalism: A Case Study Of Post-Year 10 Outdoor Education In Western Australia, David Aldous, Dawn Penney
The Transformational Possibilities Of Liberal Vocationalism: A Case Study Of Post-Year 10 Outdoor Education In Western Australia, David Aldous, Dawn Penney
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper discusses the transformative potential that liberal vocationalism, aligned with contemporary visions of lifelong and lifewide learning, presents for outdoor learning across institutional and industry settings. Utilising Bernstein’s sociological theory, the paper explores this transformation through an illustrative case study of the relations, knowledges and identities of post-Year10 Outdoor Education in Western Australia (WA). The case study highlights how Outdoor Education in WA has been organised through distinct classificatory relations that exist between government, regulatory bodies and individual industry providers that serve to distinguish Outdoor Education from outdoor learning that is ongoing and able to be pursued by people …

Curriculum Approaches To Strengthening Student Employability And Improving Graduate Outcomes In The Stm Disciplines, Denise Jackson, Michael D. O’Connor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In Australia and elsewhere, curriculum improvements are needed to improve the development of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) graduates for future work and careers. Several studies document significant STM student attrition, poor graduate preparedness for work, relatively weak employment rates post-graduation, and mismatched expectations of graduate capabilities by employers. The inclusion of work-integrated learning (WIL) activities within curricula can better prepare students for relevant employment by bridging discipline-specific teaching with work practices. Traditionally, access to WIL has been limited for STM Bachelor students and a better understanding of WIL’s benefits and impact is needed to refine and extend STM WIL …

Promoting The Concept Healthy Ageing For Use In Gerontological Health And Social Care Policy And Practice, Claire Donnellan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Aims: The concept of healthy or successful ageing dates back to the 1960s, where its goal is more realistic in today's ageing society as a result of effective interventions to control and reduce disability and health risks. The aim of this paper is to outline the importance of defining ageing, the semantics and indicators used, and to identify common challenges for health professionals' understanding and application of a healthy ageing approach in their everyday clinical practice. Design and Methods: This discursive paper demonstrates how realistic ageing indicators are for highlighting the variation and impact of challenges associated with ageing. It …
