Decreased vigilance associated with drowsiness is a major cause of motor vehicle crashes, but its physiological characterization and detection remain difficult due to behavioral and environmental confounding factors. This study presents an original experimental framework combining a highly controlled sleep-deprivation protocol, repeated driving simulations, and a machine-learning-based heart rate variability (HRV) analysis to study the physiological and behavioral changes in vigilance during a prolonged period of wakefulness while driving. Twelve healthy young adults participated in a 30-h sleep-deprivation constant routine protocol that included driving simulations every two hours, with data collection: electrocardiography (ECG), subjective ratings of drowsiness, psychomotor vigilance test, …

There have been notable improvements in patient safety in recent years; however, significant challenges remain in reducing the incidence of preventable patient harm. Supporting patient safety efforts is increasingly important given increasing complexity of care and changing health needs, especially with aging populations. Emerging technologies and capabilities open new possibilities to address longstanding patient safety problems. For example, predictive analytics to support provider decision-making, increased patient interest in engagement in their care, and artificial intelligence provide opportunities to further reduce harm. Many of these examples support a more proactive approach to patient safety by focusing on anticipating, predicting, and preventing …

Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Timely prediction may prevent adverse maternal outcomes, and efforts are needed to develop accurate predictive tools. A high-performing machine learning model to predict PPH using data from the US Consortium for Safe Labor (CSL) remains to be widely validated in contemporary clinical settings using electronic health record (EHR) data. Our goal was to evaluate the performance of the CSL PPH predictive model using EHR data across a large healthcare system in the Northeastern United States.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study across eight hospitals in the …

Exposing The Work Of The Market Through The Case Of Alternative Provision For English School Students, Nick Pratt, Elizabeth Done, Sam Morahan
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Pupils in England who for some reason are not able to attend school often find themselves in Alternative Provision (AP). These are special arrangements designed to address their specific needs and help them return to mainstream schooling. AP involves a financial agreement between the provider and the organisation that commissions the provision and thus operates as an explicit form of education market in which educational services are traded directly for financial recompense. We report on a case study of one AP provider in the South-West of England undertaken over a one-year period which generated data through individual, semi-structured interviews and …

The Urgent Need for a Shift from Crisis Intervention to Prevention. As highlighted by the Chief Medical Officer, demographic ageing—particularly acute in coastal areas like Cornwall—necessitates a fundamental shift in care models to allow individuals to live as independently as possible. Currently, the potential of digital technologies to support this aim is not being realised. To maintain wellbeing and reduce demand on statutory services, the system must pivot from reactive crisis management to a greater focus on prevention. While technology can play a pivotal role, it will only succeed if integrated into interoperable, data-driven systems that facilitate early intervention and …

Microbiome perturbations are associated with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD), but how microorganisms contribute to disease mechanisms is unclear. Here we analysed metagenomes of paired saliva and faecal samples from an ACLD cohort of 86 individuals, plus 2 control groups of 52 healthy individuals and 14 patients with sepsis. We identified highly similar oral and gut bacterial strains, including Veillonella and Streptococcus spp., which increased in absolute abundance in the gut of patients with ACLD compared with controls. These microbial translocators uniquely share a prtC gene encoding a collagenase-like proteinase, and its faecal abundance was a robust ACLD biomarker (area …

The adverse effects on parent and child outcomes of poverty and stressors associated with low income are well established. With notable exceptions, however, the potential role of frontline services in improving family financial well-being is underexplored. This article outlines how patient and public involvement (PPI) was initiated early on in research on financial well-being support (FWbS). It illustrates how research can build on and integrate what parents say about services and how to research them. The involvement work was undertaken in one city in part to inform the adaptation of an income maximisation service to be delivered in local children’s …

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling anxiety disorder precipitated by severe trauma. Many people with this condition have little access to clinical interventions, especially in low-middle-income countries. For the development of any digital health intervention, it is vital to know the opinions of PLE and clinicians to guide the developers. We conducted two focus groups, one with clinicians (n = 5) and one with people with lived experience (PLE) (n = 11), to gain knowledge of their views on the development of a PTSD App. Transcripts of both focus groups were coded and thematically analysed. The key themes that …

Hybrid Bacterial Colony Optimization And Particle Swarm Optimization For Load Balancing In Fog Computing, Aryan Kumar, Punit Gupta, Rohit Verma
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Fog computing minimizes latency and bandwidth consumption by processing data near the source, but it has the challenge of workload balancing across the dynamic and resource limited fog nodes. Uneven task assignment can result in bottlenecks, idle resources, and lowered Quality of Service (QoS) standards. In this work, we introduce a hybrid metaheuristic load balancing algorithm for fog computing by combining the Bacterial Colony Optimization (BCO) and the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) techniques to enhance load balancing. BCO has good solution space exploration capabilities, whereas PSO has the advantage of quick convergence; the hybrid takes advantage from both to achieve …

Retention campaigns in customer relationship management often rely on churn prediction models evaluated using traditional metrics such as AUC and F1-score. However, these metrics fail to reflect financial outcomes and may mislead strategic decisions. We introduce e-Profits, a novel business-aligned evaluation metric that quantifies model performance based on customer lifetime value, retention probability, and intervention costs. Unlike existing profit-based metrics such as Expected Maximum Profit, which assume fixed population-level parameters, e-Profits uses Kaplan–Meier survival analysis to estimate tenure-conditioned (customer-level) one-period retention probabilities and supports granular, per-customer profit evaluation. We benchmark six classifiers across two telecom datasets (IBM Telco and Maven …

Synthesising Cross-Speaker Data For Low-Resource Pathological Speech Recognition With Peft, Kesego Mokgosi, Milad Dadgar, Cathy Ennis, Robert Ross
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Dysarthric speech recognition is essential for enhancing communication and accessibility for individuals with speech impairments, yet its development is hindered by a scarcity of robust, speaker-specific datasets. This study explores low-resource dysarthric speech recognition through cross-speaker transfer using synthetic data and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT). We integrate SpeechT5 text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis with x-vector speaker embeddings to generate speaker-specific dysarthric speech, enabling model adaptation while preserving pathological speech characteristics such as prosodic irregularities. Experiments on the TORGO dataset show that mixed cross-synthetic data with LoRA fine-tuning achieves a WER of 0.17, representing a 71.7% improvement over the standard model (0.60 WER) without …

Blockchain provides secure and decentralized data storage. Normal blockchains permanently store data. Mutable blockchains allow users to change data, but this reduces tamper resistance. This paper tests both methods in PaB-PIF, a hybrid architecture for IoT-Fog networks. Our design uses an immutable mainchain in the cloud layer and mutable sidechains in the fog layer. We analyze throughput, latency, and tamper resistance using math models and simulations. Results show that blockchain greatly improves network security. Without blockchain, the network has zero tamper resistance. The mutable blockchain in the fog layer has a tamper resistance of 0.58. The immutable blockchain in the …

The effectiveness of supervised machine learning models is heavily influenced by the quality of training data, which is often shaped by human annotators. Subjective NLP tasks such as hate speech detection, toxicity identification, and sexism classification frequently exhibit annotator disagreement due to differences in individual perspectives. This study investigates annotator disagreement in sexism detection using English tweets from the EXIST 2023 competition. To systematically analyse disagreement, tweets are categorised based on annotator consensus levels, examining how annotator demographics and linguistic features contribute to labelling inconsistencies. We interpret disagreement patterns using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) and assess the consistency of SHAP-derived …

Phishing remains one of the most persistent cybersecurity threats, exploiting human trust to steal sensitive information through deceptive websites. Traditional detection methods, reliant on blacklists and reactive reporting, offer limited protection against rapidly evolving zero-day attacks. To address these challenges, this study proposes and evaluates a hybrid browser-resident phishing detection framework that combines three complementary detection mechanisms: a locally executed Random Forest model using URL lexical features, lightweight real-time DOM structure analysis, and VirusTotal’s multi-engine reputation service. Communication between the client and server is optimised using gRPC over the QUIC protocol, ensuring secure, high-performance data exchange with built-in retry mechanisms …

Video-Dprp: A Differentially Private Approach For Visual Privacy-Preserving Video Human Activity Recognition, Allassan Tchangmena A. Nken, Susan Mckeever, Peter Corcoran, Ihsan Ullah
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Considerable effort has been made in privacy-preserving video human activity recognition (HAR). Two primary approaches to ensure privacy preservation in Video HAR are differential privacy (DP) and visual privacy. Techniques enforcing DP during training provide strong theoretical privacy guarantees but offer limited capabilities for visual privacy assessment. Conversely, methods such as low-resolution transformations, data obfuscation and adversarial networks, emphasize visual privacy but lack clear theoretical privacy assurances. In this work, we focus on two main objectives: (1) leveraging DP properties to develop a model-free approach for visual privacy in videos and (2) evaluating our proposed technique using both differential privacy …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Accurate volumetric segmentation of 3D medical imaging modalities is critical for therapy planning and clinical diagnosis, particularly for brain tumor delineation. Traditional convolutional neural network (CNN)-based architectures face challenges while capturing global contextual information and modeling long-range dependencies in complex 3D volumetric data, limiting their segmentation performance. Transformer-based models have emerged as promising alternatives to CNNs for such tasks, addressing their limitations in capturing global spatial dependencies. We propose 3D-ViT-UNet, a novel U-shaped vision transformer (ViT)-based encoder-decoder architecture for end-to-end volumetric brain tumor segmentation. The model employs 3D Window Multi-Head Self-Attention (3D-W-MSA) to capture local features and a 3D Dilated-Window …

Neural ordinary differential equations provide a principled continuous depth formulation, yet their practical use is often limited by slow, numerically fragile, and computationally expensive training caused by the weaknesses of standard ODEs solvers. We introduce extended stability Runge Kutta methods, which are explicit fixed step solvers designed to remain stable at much larger step sizes than classical schemes such as RK4 or adaptive methods such as Dormand Prince. By enlarging the stability region of the real axis, these solvers cross the integration horizon with far fewer steps, providing deterministic computation, greatly reduced function evaluation cost, and smoother optimization dynamics. Sustainable Development And Faith, Tony Kealy
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The contribution of faith-based input to the broader idea of sustainable development has not been widely acknowledged in the traditional sense; however, recent global events suggest it may warrant further exploration. This qualitative study examines how faith-based activities, such as missionary work, have historically and can continue to contribute significantly to the environmental, economic, and human/social aspects of organizational decision-making. The focus is on the Catholic faith, specifically the role played by the Irish-based Medical Missionaries of Mary religious congregation in the mid-to-late twentieth century. An initial literature review was conducted to gather information from various sources to define sustainable …

A Taxonomy And Empirical Evaluation Of Webassembly Runtimes For Performance And Energy Across Machine Learning And Arithmetic Workloads, Sallar Khan, Tania Malik, Khalid Hasanov
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
WebAssembly (Wasm) has emerged as a lightweight, portable, and secure execution environment beyond the browser, with growing adoption in data-intensive, machine learning, and performance-sensitive workloads. However, the runtime ecosystem remains fragmented, and a systems-level understanding of how runtime design affects performance and energy efficiency is still lacking. This paper makes two contributions. First, it presents a taxonomy of modern WebAssembly runtimes that classifies the runtime landscape by execution model, compilation strategy, integration style, and systemslevel capabilities. Second, it provides an empirical evaluation of 13WASI-compatible runtimes and a native baseline across eight benchmarks, namely, four machine learning workloads (Logistic Regression, K-Means, …
