Essays On Accelerated Failure Time Models For Recurrent Event Data, Emmanuel Masavo Djegou
Essays On Accelerated Failure Time Models For Recurrent Event Data, Emmanuel Masavo Djegou
Doctoral Dissertations
Recurrent event data arise in many fields such as medicine, reliability, insurance, and economics, where the same event may occur repeatedly for a subject. Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) models provide an intuitive framework for relating covariates to event times and offer a useful alternative to proportional hazards models, allowing direct prediction of event timing under right censoring. However, existing AFT extensions for recurrent events, such as accelerated gap time (AGT) models, often fail to account for interventions between events and may not capture complex temporal patterns.
In this work, we first propose a class of semiparametric AGT models incorporating an …
Incremental Cluster Validity Indices And Their Role In Interpreting Lifelong Learning Systems, Niklas Max Melton
Incremental Cluster Validity Indices And Their Role In Interpreting Lifelong Learning Systems, Niklas Max Melton
Doctoral Dissertations
Clustering and supervised learning are often treated as distinct paradigms, yet both rely on structure in feature space. This dissertation investigates the relationship between cluster validity indices (CVIs) and supervised learning in real-time and lifelong learning settings where data arrive incrementally and cannot be revisited. Across four studies, it develops methods for online cluster validation, uses supervised learning to improve their interpretability, and applies these ideas to evaluating performance degradation in continual learning.
The first study extends incremental cluster validity indices (iCVIs), enabling widely used validation metrics to operate in streaming environments. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show systematic …
Advancing Coal Rib Support Design Through The Integration Of Field Studies And Numerical Simulations, Alper Kirmaci
Advancing Coal Rib Support Design Through The Integration Of Field Studies And Numerical Simulations, Alper Kirmaci
Doctoral Dissertations
Coal rib stability remains a major safety concern in U.S. underground coal mines, with rib failure-related injuries and fatalities still occurring. A key challenge is the lack of a standardized methodology for designing rib support systems that can address varying geological conditions. As a result, many mines rely on trial-and-error or traditional practices, leading to inconsistent designs. This research aims to develop a systematic methodology for rib support design to improve coal rib stability in U.S. mining operations.
The study consists of: i) field monitoring in active room-and-pillar coal mines, ii) in-situ pull-out tests on coal ribs, iii) numerical model …
Strontium Titanate For Capacitor And Energy Storage Applications At Cryogenic Temperatures, Hung Trinh
Strontium Titanate For Capacitor And Energy Storage Applications At Cryogenic Temperatures, Hung Trinh
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates the dielectric properties of single crystal and ceramic strontium titanate (SrTiO3) for cryogenic capacitor applications from room temperature to 4 K. Permittivity (k) and loss tangent are dependent on temperature, frequency, mechanical stress, and applied DC electric field. Accordingly, the dielectric constant and loss tangent were measured at various frequencies and DC bias levels. Loss tangent data are also presented as equivalent series resistance (ESR). For single crystal SrTiO3, an impurity level of ≈500 ppm barium resulted in an increase of the maximum permittivity to approximately 50,000 at 6 K. This relatively high …
Fully Differential Studies On Dissociative Capture In P + D2 Collisions And On Ionization In P + He Collisions, Shruti Majumdar
Fully Differential Studies On Dissociative Capture In P + D2 Collisions And On Ionization In P + He Collisions, Shruti Majumdar
Doctoral Dissertations
Advancing our understanding of few-body dynamics in simple atomic systems is a fundamental objective in atomic scattering research. The underlying problem is that the Schrödinger equation is not analytically solvable for more than two mutually interacting particles. This involves a comprehensive exploration of various channels, such as ionization, capture, and excitation. A common theoretical approach to describe ion-atom collisions is based on perturbation theory, where the scattering amplitude is expanded in powers of the interaction potential. Here, understanding the few-body problem means accurately describing the relative importance of the higher- vs the first order terms.
In the case of ionization, …
Fabrication And Characterization Of A High Strength Novel Aluminum Alloy For Implementation With Directed Energy Deposition, Rachel Boillat-Newport
Fabrication And Characterization Of A High Strength Novel Aluminum Alloy For Implementation With Directed Energy Deposition, Rachel Boillat-Newport
Doctoral Dissertations
"Additive manufacturing (AM) is of significant interest due to the ability to fabricate 3D components layer-by-layer. Compared with traditional manufacturing methods, AM allows for the direct fabrication of complex, intricate parts without the need for extensive machining, reducing manufacturing time and tooling costs and minimizing material waste. Aluminum alloys are highly desired for implementation via AM due to their high strength-to-weight ratios; however, there are several challenges that complicate the situation and hinder the use of aluminum alloys. One of the most challenging issues is that the desired high-strength alloys are not compatible with AM processing methods. A method to …
Critical Parameters Controlling Oxide Scale Formation And Hydro-Descaling Efficiency During Steelmaking, Tochukwu Princewill Ojiako
Critical Parameters Controlling Oxide Scale Formation And Hydro-Descaling Efficiency During Steelmaking, Tochukwu Princewill Ojiako
Doctoral Dissertations
In modern steelmaking, cast slabs are exposed to high-temperature oxidizing environments during secondary cooling, reheating, and hot rolling, resulting in the formation of multilayer oxide scales on the steel surface. These scales interact with mold-flux residues originating from the casting process (CC). The morphology, chemistry, and adhesion of oxide scale strongly influence its removability during high-pressure hydraulic descaling and ultimately determine the surface quality of hot-rolled products. However, the mechanistic relationship between oxide scale evolution, scale-steel interfacial structure, and hydraulic descaling performance remains poorly understood.
This dissertation investigates oxide scale formation, modification, and removal in low-carbon thin-slab steels produced by …
Probability Of Detection For Corrosion-Induced Mass Loss And Yield Strain In Metal Structures Using Fe-C Coated Long Period Fiber Gratings Sensors And Electroresistive Strain Gauges, Ying Zhuo
Doctoral Dissertations
"Graphene-based, Fe-C coated long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensors individually reveal a causal relation between LPFG wavelength change and Fe-C mass loss. Their correlation parameters vary significantly between the sensors mainly because hydrophobic multilayer graphene and graphene oxide make sensor fabrication inconsistent. This study explores MXene-based, Fe-C coated LPFG sensors due to MXene’s inherent hydrophilic property in the presence of surface functional groups such as hydroxyl and oxygen and the probability of detection (POD) for mass loss from Fe-C coated LPFG sensors when deployed at a fixed location. A novel fabrication process incorporating Piranha solution pretreatment is proposed to ensure uniform …
Accelerating Circular Economy Transition For A Sustainable Built Environment: A Systems-Based Framework, Radwa Walid Yassin Eissa
Accelerating Circular Economy Transition For A Sustainable Built Environment: A Systems-Based Framework, Radwa Walid Yassin Eissa
Doctoral Dissertations
"The Circular Economy (CE) has gained momentum as a transformative framework for steering the construction value chain towards greater sustainability. However, this transition requires shifts in production and consumption patterns, adoption of circular business models, and the replacement of linear practices. Despite growing interest, CE adoption in construction faces persistent challenges, including sectoral fragmentation, lack of integrated governance frameworks, and limited coordination among stakeholders. This dissertation aims to accelerate the CE transition in the built environment through a multi-scale, interdisciplinary approach spanning five modules: (1) Module 1 develops a construction value chain-structured portfolio of CE strategies and assesses their implementation; …

Analytical And Empirical Data-Driven Risk-Governance Design Across The Different Phases: Creating Informed Policy Adjustments For The Transportation Project Lifecycle, Mariam A. Elazhary
Doctoral Dissertations
"Transportation infrastructure is a critical foundation for economic productivity, yet agencies still face challenges in translating the expanding transportation datasets into defensible, phase-specific risk-governance tools. This dissertation addresses this gap by developing analytical and empirical, data-driven approaches to support risk governance across the transportation project lifecycle. Module 1 uses a panel model with bid-letting data to examine how out-of-state contractor participation affects pre-award competition and to derive entry-governance rules. Module 2 analyzes nonfatal injury data through iterative multiple linear regression and fatality data through association-rule change mining to identify multi-factor safety-risk configurations and develop adaptive safety-governance provisions. Module 3 develops …
Bond Graph And Extended Generalized Average Method With Applications In Cyber-Physical Systems And Power Electronics, Arnold Anthony Fernandes
Bond Graph And Extended Generalized Average Method With Applications In Cyber-Physical Systems And Power Electronics, Arnold Anthony Fernandes
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research examines two applications of control theory. The first application considers the bond graph (BG) modeling technique, which is used to develop the MATLAB structural analysis toolbox (MATSAT), an open-source toolbox for sensor placement and qualitative system analysis that considers the observability and fault-detection capabilities of multi-domain cyberphysical systems. The toolbox provides information on redundant sensors, guiding the system designer in cost and security trade-offs. The toolbox uses traditional BG causality assignment procedures. Additionally, MATSAT provides optimal causality assignment methods that perform significantly better at assigning causality to BGs with increased junctions, sources, and simple meshes, without encountering causality …
Integrating Stakeholder Priorities Into Resilience Planning And Investment Decision-Making, Victoria Jeaneen Kraemer
Integrating Stakeholder Priorities Into Resilience Planning And Investment Decision-Making, Victoria Jeaneen Kraemer
Doctoral Dissertations
"Resilience is a system’s ability to bounce back from a disruption. However, resilience needs may vary across different stakeholders. To better integrate stakeholder input into resilience planning and investment decision-making, existing frameworks were combined to develop the Integrated Stakeholder-Centered Resilience Framework. This broad framework is tailorable across contexts and stakeholder types. Research results demonstrate the use of this framework to evaluate the effects of disruptions and represent stakeholder preferences for investments. In the first study, participants were randomly assigned to power outage scenarios, which did not affect their criteria priorities. An exploratory factor analysis revealed two main priorities, (1) Absorption …

Quantifying, Forecasting, And Mitigating Construction Labor And Material Challenges In A Dynamic Global Economy Using Econometrics And Deep Learning, Ahmed Gamal Elsayed Mohamed Shiha
Doctoral Dissertations
"The construction industry contributes to the global economy, yet its cost management practices remain constrained by labor shortages and material price volatility. These challenges are intensified by economic disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and trade policy shifts. Despite a growing body of literature, five knowledge gaps remain unaddressed: (1) the absence of dynamic, and localized measures of construction labor shortages; (2) limited empirical investigation of macroeconomic leading indicators of labor shortages; (3) underutilization of deep learning (DL) algorithms in forecasting local construction labor earnings; (4) the limited treatment of structural breaks in existing construction material price forecasting models; and (5) the lack …
Harnessing Coherent-Wave Control For Sensing Applications In Scattering Media, Pablo Xavier Jara Palacios
Harnessing Coherent-Wave Control For Sensing Applications In Scattering Media, Pablo Xavier Jara Palacios
Doctoral Dissertations
"Diffuse electromagnetic waves are widely used for non-invasive sensing and imaging in complex scattering media such as biological tissues. A fundamental limitation of such techniques is the scarcity of detected photons: as the source-detector separation increases to access deeper regions of the medium, the signal strength decays rapidly, leading to poor signal-to-noise ratio and limited sensitivity. This dissertation addresses this challenge through a combination of theory and computation.
We show that coherent control of the incident optical wavefront can compensate for the scarcity of detected photons that limits conventional diffuse optical imaging, typically performed in the near-infrared spectral region. By …

The Power Of Role-Modelling: White Teacher Educators Normalising Anti-Racism And Cultural Reflexivity For White Pre-Service Teachers, Mary-Anne Macdonald, Sarah Booth, Helen Mills, Robert Somerville
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Every child has a right to feel culturally safe in schools, yet for countless Indigenous students this is not the case. Many White pre-service teachers in Australia enter initial teacher education with a limited understanding of racial identity, Indigenous knowledge or White anti-racism. This autoethnographic study applies Social Cognitive Theory and the Theory of Planned Behaviour to understand the role of the White teacher educator in racial conscientisation of White pre-service teachers. We examine how White teacher confidence in enacting anti-racist behaviours builds when White teacher educators role-model the professional approaches which White teachers can use to teach about race …

Negotiating Disability Stigma In Undergraduate Students With Academic Accommodations, Demetruis Leonard, Pietro A. Sasso
Negotiating Disability Stigma In Undergraduate Students With Academic Accommodations, Demetruis Leonard, Pietro A. Sasso
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
To understand how undergraduate students diagnosed with a disability who receive academic accommodations negotiate stigma, this phenomenological qualitative study was conducted at a midwestern private university using Gibson's (2006) Disability Identity Development Model. Findings from this study of six undergraduates receiving academic accommodations suggest they qualified for reasonable accommodations to guarantee equal access and mitigate the impact of their diagnosed ADHD, depression, and/or anxiety and were granted academic accommodations such as extended time for testing and assignments. These students also used family, friends, and peers to support the navigation of the negative stigma of being perceived as “lazy” or “taking …
Comparing Gpas Of First-Time Students Based On Admissions Decision Date, John M. Adkins
Comparing Gpas Of First-Time Students Based On Admissions Decision Date, John M. Adkins
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
With the upcoming demographic shift, higher education administrators are aiming to enroll and retain as many students as possible. With this increased focus on enrollment and retention, a question that can be asked is whether students admitted late (two weeks prior to the start of the full term) will be less academically successful after their first full academic year? To study this question, the first-time, full-term cohorts for the fall 2020, 2021, and 2022 were obtained from Georgia Southern University. The data collected were the admissions decisions and registration dates, fall term GPA, spring term GPA, and cumulative GPA. The …

Conceptualizations Of Hazing: An Exploratory Study Using Lukes’ Three Dimensions Of Power, David James Kerschner, Emily Feuer, Elizabeth J. Allan
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Building on connections between hazing and power in the literature, we analyzed data generated from campus hazing climate interviews with 308 participants (209 staff members, 99 students) at nine research universities in the United States. Our analysis draws on Lukes’ (1974, 2005) three dimensions of power as a conceptual framework and highlights how each of these dimensions is embedded in staff member and student definitions, conceptualizations, and understandings of hazing. Findings and subthemes for each of Lukes’ dimensions are shared and described, illuminating sources of power associated with each dimension. This investigation reveals important nuances associated with hazing, aligning with …

Racial Discrimination And Racial Identity Among Asian College Students: The Moderating Role Of Interdependent Self-Construal, Foong Yan Lee, Qianyi Wang, Eunseon Gong
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
The current study examined the moderating role of interdependent self-construal in the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and racial group identification among 130 Asian college students at a U.S. institution. Using moderation regression analyses, results indicated that perceived racial discrimination was associated with lower racial group identification, and this relationship was significantly moderated by interdependent self-construal. Specifically, racial discrimination was negatively associated with racial group identification among students reporting lower levels of interdependent self-construal, whereas this association was not significant among those with higher interdependent self-construal. These findings suggest that individual differences in self-construal shape how Asian college students interpret …
The Impact Of Belonging To Identity-Based Student Organizations On Minority Stress In A Midwestern Predominantly White University, Mallory Millet, Akanksha Das, Christian C. Garcia, Rose Marie Ward
The Impact Of Belonging To Identity-Based Student Organizations On Minority Stress In A Midwestern Predominantly White University, Mallory Millet, Akanksha Das, Christian C. Garcia, Rose Marie Ward
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Minoritized students are exposed to additional unique stressors due to the systematic devaluation of their identities (i.e., minority stress). Additionally, minoritized students report higher levels of mental health concerns than their peers (e.g., anxiety, depression). Identity-based student organizations can be one avenue that universities could use to support these students. These organizations, designed to build social connections among students with shared experiences, may reduce minority stress through fostering students’ sense of belonging. However, the relationship between sense of belonging, minority stress, and identity-based student organizations has yet to be studied. The present study used quantitative and qualitative methods to understand …

“Maybe I’M Not Valued Here”: Organizational Toxins In Student Affairs, William R. Bowey Jr
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Organizations of student affairs are dynamic entities that are situated to support the learning, growth, development, and wellbeing of students. However, like any organization, they may contain toxins that detract from these goals. This study situates ambiguity and exploitation as organizational toxins faced by individuals in student affairs. The conceptualization of organizational toxins is novel to the student affairs literature, and the findings provide fertile ground for future research and the implementation of strategies to mitigate toxins in student affairs.

What does it take to participate in direct, naturally occurring social interaction? Conversation analytic (CA) studies reveal that “participation”—who participates, when, and how—is dynamic and locally, multimodally achieved by the people involved. Particularly in social situations when people are concurrently accessible to one another’s naked senses (Goffman, 1964), co-participation is enabled and performed through embodied and vocal resources including talk, gaze, facial displays, body orientation/posture, proximity, and gestures (e.g., M. H. Goodwin, 1999; C. Goodwin & M. H. Goodwin, 2005; Pillet-Shore, 2010; Sidnell, 2009). Using a multimodal CA lens, this chapter illuminates how “participation” is achieved in real-time, naturally occurring …
