Loved Right: Encouraging The Responsible Adaptive Reuse Of Historic Buildings In The Information Age, Christie Chirinos Jan 2026

Loved Right: Encouraging The Responsible Adaptive Reuse Of Historic Buildings In The Information Age, Christie Chirinos

Theses and Dissertations

This research contributes to interior design scholarship by situating immersive virtual reality (VR) as an efficiency tool and an architectural visualization tool within adaptive reuse and historic preservation practice. Interior designers are increasingly tasked with mediating between cultural heritage, community stakeholders, regulatory constraints, and economic feasibility, in buildings that already exist. By positioning VR as a tool with utility across every stage of the design process, this study expands interior design research beyond material and spatial interventions to include storytelling and technological innovation as drivers for design decision-making. The work bridges interior design, preservation, and participatory planning, demonstrating how immersive …

Early Math Readiness And Later Achievement: A Longitudinal Study, Bailey Bontrager Jan 2026

Early Math Readiness And Later Achievement: A Longitudinal Study, Bailey Bontrager

Theses and Dissertations

The current body of literature provides much evidence that mathematics skills at the start of kindergarten are predictive of later mathematics achievement, and that students enrolled in early childhood education (ECE) programs are better prepared for mathematics at the start of kindergarten. However, the potential for children to develop mathematical skills prior to entering kindergarten relies on access to ECE programs and resources in families’ surrounding communities. Recent use of geospatial data collection techniques and measures of community resource availability have enabled researchers to examine specific localities for the ways in which community organizations and institutions support residents in particular …

Partisan Local Media And Corporate Voluntary Disclosures: Evidence From Sinclair Acquisitions, Ming Li Jan 2026

Partisan Local Media And Corporate Voluntary Disclosures: Evidence From Sinclair Acquisitions, Ming Li

Theses and Dissertations

I investigate the impact of local media’s political orientation on firms’ voluntary disclosure, exploiting the acquisitions of local TV stations by Sinclair Broadcast Group, a conservative media conglomerate. Drawing on the media bias theory and implementing a staggered difference‐in‐differences design, I find that the local partisan media affects management earnings forecasts. Specifically, Conservative-leaning CEOs in designated market areas (DMAs) affected by Sinclair’s acquisitions forecast more optimistically, increasing forecast frequency and inflating forecasted earnings. The impact is stronger if the DMAs are more Liberal-leaning before the acquisitions and when firms have weaker corporate governance. I also find that the stock market …

Sex In Plants: Birth, Death, And Trying To Survive In Changing Climates, Elena M. Meyer Jan 2026

Sex In Plants: Birth, Death, And Trying To Survive In Changing Climates, Elena M. Meyer

Theses and Dissertations

Plant mating systems are key determinants of fitness. Angiosperms exhibit a wide variety of reproductive strategies, including self-fertilization (or selfing), outcrossing, and mixed mating. It has been estimated that up to 43% of plant species are capable of selfing, and selfing has been hypothesized to provide reproductive assurance where opportunities for mating may be limited, such as in marginal environments. However, questions regarding the overall distribution of selfing rates across angiosperms, the maintenance of mixed mating in the face of inbreeding depression, and the impact of self-fertilization on diversification rates remain incompletely resolved. Here, we explore the dynamics of self-fertilization …

Assessment Of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Event Across Diverse Racial Groups Of Psoriasis Patients On Biologic Therapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Chunghwan Ro, Ana Ormaza Vera, Waleed Adawi, Clinton W. Enos Jan 2026

Assessment Of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Event Across Diverse Racial Groups Of Psoriasis Patients On Biologic Therapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Chunghwan Ro, Ana Ormaza Vera, Waleed Adawi, Clinton W. Enos

Department Dermatology Faculty Publications

Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), and biologic therapy may reduce this risk by targeting systemic inflammation. However, limited data exist on whether long term MACE risk differs by biologic class or across racial groups. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to assess the risk of primary MACE in psoriasis patients receiving biological therapies, stratified by biological class, compared with biologic-naïve psoriasis patients. Whether MACE risk among biologic-treated patients varied by race was further examined. After 1:1 propensity score matching, 36 330 biologic-treated patients were compared with 36 330 non-biologic-treated patients. Incident MACE …

Dodgeballs And Dragons: Gamified Live Theatre In The Service Of Community Betterment, Teddy Mcpherson Jan 2026

Dodgeballs And Dragons: Gamified Live Theatre In The Service Of Community Betterment, Teddy Mcpherson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis qualifies and documents a new genre of interdisciplinary, interactive theatre called Dodgeballs and Dragons. It covers a brief history of Dungeons and Dragons and Theatre of the Oppressed (the two foundational works for the new genre) as well as previous uses of D&D as a form of theatrical entertainment. After establishing the precedence used to create this product, the rest of the thesis breaks down how to write, lead, and play these shows on a regular basis. The document culminates in collected data providing concrete evidence for the future of the form and its many applications.

Optimizing Markov Chain Monte Carlo Algorithms For Fairness, Scalability, And Interpretability In Electoral Redistricting, Madhukara Kekulandara Jan 2026

Optimizing Markov Chain Monte Carlo Algorithms For Fairness, Scalability, And Interpretability In Electoral Redistricting, Madhukara Kekulandara

Open Access Dissertations

Gerrymandering undermines democratic representation by manipulating electoral district boundaries to dilute the political influence of targeted communities. While Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based redistricting algorithms have become a standard computational tool for detecting partisan gerrymandering, their effectiveness in addressing racial gerrymandering and their scalability on modern computing systems remain limited. This dissertation advances the theory and practice of algorithmic redistricting by optimizing MCMC-based approaches across three dimensions: racial fairness, computational efficiency, and interpretability.

First, this work introduces the Partial Map MCMC algorithm, a novel redistricting method designed specifically to address racial gerrymandering under the legal framework of Section 2 …

Spectrum Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders In Children Attending A Developmental Clinic In Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Aleya Zulfikar Remtulla, Sumayyah Nasiruddin Saudin, Orujul Hassan, Mariam Noorani

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in children present significant challenges for healthcare systems globally. In Tanzania, children with NDDs and their families face significant challenges due to late diagnosis, lack of standardized screening tools, widespread stigma and cultural beliefs that deter health-seeking behaviours. Awareness about NDDs is low, and financial constraints further complicate access to necessary medical interventions. The country suffers from a severe shortage of specialized healthcare providers, and general healthcare providers often lack adequate training. Additionally, limited specialized facilities, high treatment costs and insufficient healthcare policies dedicated to NDDs make it difficult to manage these conditions effectively. Understanding the …

The Library Of Congress At A Crossroads: Executive Overreach And The Future Of Public Knowledge, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon Jan 2026

The Library Of Congress At A Crossroads: Executive Overreach And The Future Of Public Knowledge, Leslie A. Street, Amanda M. Runyon

Library Staff Publications

This Article argues that the removal of the Librarian of Congress and the Register of Copyrights exposed a dual vulnerability: a constitutional breach of the separation of powers and a cultural threat to the nation’s knowledge infrastructure. The Library’s structural ambiguity—its simultaneous identity as a legislative library, national library, and copyright agency—has left it vulnerable to executive overreach. By asserting control over an institution designed to serve Congress and safeguard America’s intellectual heritage, the President destabilized a statutory framework that has endured for over two centuries. To protect both constitutional integrity and the Library’s role as custodian of national memory, …

The Police Archipelago: Decentralization, Police Violence, Over-Punishment, And Crime, José F. Girón Jan 2026

The Police Archipelago: Decentralization, Police Violence, Over-Punishment, And Crime, José F. Girón

Faculty Publications

A strong consensus has taken hold in the legal academy. Criminal Justice Localism, espoused by scholars of every stripe, promotes greater local control of every facet of the criminal justice system. But Criminal Justice Localism largely overlooks an institution that plays a critical role in the criminal justice system, and which has been the subject of intense public criticism: the police. That oversight is remarkable for two reasons. First, calls for increased local control of the police seem to ignore that America operates one of the most—if not the most—decentralized policing models in the world, with its thousands of local, …

Survivors Of Historical Intergenerational And Familial Trauma Scale For Black American Descendants Of Enslaved People: A Development And Initial Validation Study, Loryn Chás Kimbrough Jan 2026

Survivors Of Historical Intergenerational And Familial Trauma Scale For Black American Descendants Of Enslaved People: A Development And Initial Validation Study, Loryn Chás Kimbrough

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Despite extensive research documenting cultural and racialized trauma, no validated assessment tool had previously captured the intrafamilial mechanisms of trauma transmission specific to the BADEP population, whose trauma lineage is rooted in slavery. The present study addresses this gap through the development and initial validation of the Survivors of Historical Intergenerational and Familial Trauma Scale (SHIFTS), a culturally grounded instrument designed to measure the transmission of historical trauma (HT) and ongoing intergenerational trauma (IGT) among Black American Descendants of Enslaved People (BADEPs). The SHIFTS examines how HT gives rise to the continued transmission of two interrelated legacies: survival-based and trauma-rooted …

Amustaline/Glutathione Pathogen-Reduced Red Cell Hemoglobin Utilization In Complex Cardiac Surgery, Ian J. Welsby, Michael E. Sekela, Edward L. Snyder, James D. Gorham, John S. Mcneil, Kathy Liu, Stanley Bentow, Thomas Gniadek, Laurence Corash, Nina Mufti, Richard J. Benjamin Jan 2026

Surgery Faculty Publications

Background: The ReCePI randomized, controlled trial compared amustaline/glutathione pathogen-reduced (PR) and conventional red blood cell (RBC) transfusions in cardiac surgery. Study design and methods: We performed a post-hoc analysis of hemoglobin (Hb) utilization and safety outcomes. Hb content of study RBCs was measured at manufacture. Subject Hb levels, estimated blood loss and blood product use were recorded during and for 7 days post-surgery. Acute kidney injury (AKI) incidence was graded over 7 days, and adverse events were assessed for 28 days. Results: PR-RBCs contained 5.2% less Hb (mean [SD] Test 58.1 [6.5] g; Control 61.5 [6.8] g Hb, p <.001) due to manufacturing volume losses. Four hundred fifty-six PR- and 524 conventional RBCs were transfused to 159 Test and 162 Control subjects, respectively. Mean subject baseline and post-surgery Hb levels, and blood loss were not different between groups. Test subjects tended to require fewer total RBCs (3.5 [2.7] Test vs. 4.0 [3.5] Control, p =.08) resulting in 17.6% significantly less mean total Hb transfused (Test 203.2 g; Control 246.8 g Hb, p =.01). The proportions of subjects transfused with, and the number of platelet and cryoprecipitate units transfused were not different. Test subjects received less plasma (2.3 [1.8] units Test vs. 3.5 [3.8] Control, p =.03). Overall incidence of adverse events and AKI were not clinically different. Imbalances in AKI severity (Grade III Test 15/159 [9.4%]; Control 7/162 [4.3%], p =.07) may suggest under-transfusion in the highest-risk Test subjects. Discussion: Test patients required less transfused Hb than control subjects to maintain equivalent daily hemoglobin levels following similar blood loss.

Introduction: Prolonged invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) after lung transplantation is an appealing early prognostic outcome as it can be reproducibly assessed both prospectively and retrospectively. Whether use of IMV at 72 h after lung transplantation is associated with post-transplant graft survival is unknown. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 1511 participants in the multi-center Lung Transplant Outcomes Group cohort (2011–2018). Using Cox proportional hazards models and restricted mean survival time, we investigated whether IMV at 72 h was associated with post-transplant graft survival. We secondarily evaluated whether IMV at 72 h was concordant with severe primary graft dysfunction …

Mouse Models For Post-Sepsis Syndrome, John Matthew K. Ang, Stephanie F. Mori, Erick Lewis, Maria E.C. Bruno, Arnold Stromberg, Hiroshi Saito

Surgery Faculty Publications

Background – Sepsis survivors commonly suffer from chronic Post-Sepsis Syndrome (PSS). To understand the mechanisms of PSS, it is critical to utilize appropriate animal models. While cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) is a widely used model of sepsis, a concern exists regarding its suitability for studying long-term outcomes. Alternatively, we previously optimized a highly reproducible murine cecal slurry (CS)-injection model of sepsis. The objective of this study was to compare the suitability of CS and CLP models for investigating PSS. Methods – Male 4-month-old C57BL/6 mice were divided into 7 groups: (1) Naïve control; (2) Sham: laparotomy control; (3) CL: …

The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia, Bradford R. Clark Jan 2026

The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia, Bradford R. Clark

Journal Articles

From the article

Scholars remain generally skeptical of substantive canons of statutory interpretation even as courts continue to employ such canons in important cases. Unlike semantic canons, which help judges discern the best meaning of statutory text in context, substantive canons provide tiebreakers when the text is unclear or require special clarity in order for the text to perform certain functions. Among the substantive canons, the so-called “federalism canons” have been singled out for special scrutiny. The federalism canons are a family of canons that require courts to avoid interpreting an act of Congress to divest states of certain sovereign …

Faces Of Formalism, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Jan 2026

Faces Of Formalism, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

Formalist approaches to legal interpretation, such as textualism and originalism, are ascendant in federal statutory and constitutional law. Yet with success have come uncertainty and dissatisfaction. Formalists and their critics observe that textualism and originalism can seem as open-ended as the purposive and dynamic methods they were supposed to replace. This Article tries to diagnose the source of this discontent. It does so by identifying two different faces of formalist interpretation: the formalism of authority—adherence to original sources of law—and the formalism of method—constraint through predictable, rule-bound interpretation. Defenses of formalism often assume these two paths to constraint run together, …

Assessing Sustainable E-Cigarette Prevention Messaging In Public Health Communication, Addo Anim Adinkrah Jan 2026

Assessing Sustainable E-Cigarette Prevention Messaging In Public Health Communication, Addo Anim Adinkrah

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the sustainability of e-cigarette or vaping prevention messaging on X (formerly Twitter) and the message-design strategies used by public health institutions to maintain message visibility over time. Using the McGuire Communication/Persuasion Model and Media Framing theoretical frameworks, the research employs a qualitative thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach to analyze 506 tweets from official accounts affiliated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The findings reveal that prevention messages are sustained through repeated core warnings and reinforcement of institutional authority rooted in scientific and …

Symbolic Logistic Regression For Interval-Valued Predictors: A Simulation Study And Application To Health Data, Soad Abdullah Jan 2026

Symbolic Logistic Regression For Interval-Valued Predictors: A Simulation Study And Application To Health Data, Soad Abdullah

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates symbolic logistic regression for interval-valued predictors through simulation studies and a real health data application. Classical logistic regression assumes exact predictor values, whereas in many practical settings variables are available only in interval form due to coarsening or reporting uncertainty. Two simulation studies examine the impact of interval uncertainty under asymmetric intervals and measurement error. Symbolic models based on midpoint and midpoint-plus-width representations are compared with the classical approach. Results show that midpoint modeling captures the general relationship but introduces bias under asymmetry, while incorporating width reduces this distortion. Under measurement error, classical logistic regression exhibits attenuation …

The Only Duck I’Ve Ever Loved Is Daffy In Drag: A Textual Analysis Of Gender Norm Reinforcement In The Looney Tunes Show, Sara Bahaji Jan 2026

The Only Duck I’Ve Ever Loved Is Daffy In Drag: A Textual Analysis Of Gender Norm Reinforcement In The Looney Tunes Show, Sara Bahaji

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In 2011, Warner Brother’s latest attempt to make Looney Tunes appeal to modern audiences was released, The Looney Tunes Show. This was a departure from classic Looney Tunes, from its slice-of-life sitcom setting to the changes in the characters. But one of the ways it stood out in not just classic Looney Tunes but contemporary cartoons, was its treatment of Daffy Duck. This thesis is a textual analysis of the show’s presentation of Daffy Duck’s gender. Different frameworks were used to build the analytic tools: signifying theory, as presented by Savoy (1995), gender accountability from West & Zimmerman (1987) and …

Cultural Adaptation As A Catalyst For Creativity: The Role Of Immigrant Generation And Bicultural Identity, Milena Demario Jan 2026

Cultural Adaptation As A Catalyst For Creativity: The Role Of Immigrant Generation And Bicultural Identity, Milena Demario

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examined the relationship between bicultural identity and creative thinking among first-, 1.5-, and second-generation immigrants across a broad range of skill levels. Creativity was assessed using the Alternate Uses Task, with fluency, flexibility, and originality combined into a composite score. Results indicated that biculturalism was a strong predictor of creativity, with both cultural distance and cultural conflict positively associated with creative performance. Cultural distance showed the strongest effect, suggesting that maintaining differentiated cultural frameworks enhances divergent thinking. Mediation analyses provided partial support for biculturalism as a mechanism linking immigrant generation to creativity, primarily among second-generation immigrants. Moderation analyses …

Application Of Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry For Screening Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors, Diksha Gautam Jan 2026

Application Of Paper Spray Mass Spectrometry For Screening Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors, Diksha Gautam

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) is a novel ambient ionization method that allows chemical and biological samples to be rapidly analyzed with little preparation being required. In this paper, PS-MS was set up and streamlined as an acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-monitoring platform in addition to screening an existing and newly produced AChE-inhibitors. The detection of the substrate, acetylcholine (m/z 146), and the AChE catalysis product, choline (m/z 104) was performed without applying chromatographic separation or derivatization to the dried paper substrates. Assay conditions were optimized in a systematic way, to develop a robust MS-compatible enzymatic workflow.

Calibration curves for both, acetylcholine and …

Hallucination Detection In Scientific Writing: Quantification, Trend Analysis And Benchmarking, Adiba Ibnat Hossain Jan 2026

Hallucination Detection In Scientific Writing: Quantification, Trend Analysis And Benchmarking, Adiba Ibnat Hossain

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The landscape of scientific communication has undergone a significant transformation with the emergence and widespread adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs have enhanced productivity and creativity in scientific writing, raising serious questions about the faithfulness and reliability of the generated content. A common problem in LLMs is hallucination, which occurs when models generate fluent but inaccurate or inconsistent content. When hallucinations enter scientific writing, the intended meaning may be distorted, coherence disrupted, and the study’s overall integrity threatened.

This thesis investigates hallucinations in scientific writing from both an analytical and dataset-driven approach. First, it offers a comprehensive analysis of …

A Multi-Study Examination Of Student-Athlete Mental Health And Mental Health Service Delivery In Mid-Major College Athletic Programs, Grace Louis Jan 2026

A Multi-Study Examination Of Student-Athlete Mental Health And Mental Health Service Delivery In Mid-Major College Athletic Programs, Grace Louis

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Student-athlete mental health has become a central priority in intercollegiate athletics, with the NCAA emphasizing its Mental Health Best Practices (2016) and strengthening and expanding these standards through updated recommendations in 2024. These efforts reflect a broader cultural shift toward recognizing the unique psychological stressors faced by college athletes, including performance pressure, identity foreclosure, high time demands, and transitions both into and out of sport (Moreland et al., 2018; Hughes & Leavey, 2012). Additionally, student-athletes frequently delay or avoid help-seeking due to stigma, time constraints, identity-protective behaviors, cultural norms emphasizing toughness, and limited mental health literacy (Gulliver et al., 2012; …

Simulation And Experiment Of Two-Bunch Wakefield Dynamics And Energy Recovery In Dielectric-Lined Thz Structures, Calcifer Phillips Jan 2026

Simulation And Experiment Of Two-Bunch Wakefield Dynamics And Energy Recovery In Dielectric-Lined Thz Structures, Calcifer Phillips

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Beam-driven structure wakefield acceleration (SWFA) is a proposed method of particle acceleration that produces higher acceleration gradients. This technique could lead to the development of smaller and more efficient particle accelerators. In SWFA, a charged "drive" bunch passing through a dielectric or metallic structure created an electromagnetic "wake" field which can then be used to accelerate a following "witness" bunch. This work studies the effects of structure geometry on wake excitation, presents simulation results of wakefield dynamics in various geometries, and explores how SWFA could be used to achieve higher energy gradients. The use of a circular cross-section structure was …

Nutritional Niche Separation Amongst Sympatric Threatened Lemurs: The Role Of Micronutrients In Food Selection And Implications For Physiological Health, Maire K. O'Malley Jan 2026

Nutritional Niche Separation Amongst Sympatric Threatened Lemurs: The Role Of Micronutrients In Food Selection And Implications For Physiological Health, Maire K. O'Malley

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Madagascar’s biodiversity is heavily affected by anthropogenic change and consequently, conservation management plans need to reflect current research to protect biodiversity. Primate nutritional ecology offers valuable insights into ecology, evolution, health, habitat requirements, social behavior, and conservation management strategies. Macronutrients (fat, carbohydrates, and protein) provide consumers with energy whereas micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are essential to metabolic processes but are frequently overlooked. This study provides a novel examination of dietary niche separation by comparing mineral consumption between three sympatric species differing in feeding strategies: 1) Grey Bamboo lemur (Hapalemur griseus), a bamboo specialist, 2) Diadema sifaka (Propithecus diadema), a folivore, …

High-Throughput Strip Clustering On Fpgas For The Hl-Lhc, Hayden Shaddix Jan 2026

High-Throughput Strip Clustering On Fpgas For The Hl-Lhc, Hayden Shaddix

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

With the advent of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), the demand for modern approaches to high-throughput data processing has increased substantially. The HL-LHC will deliver far higher collision rates (pile-up reaching ⟨μ⟩ ∼200), producing a dramatic rise in detector activity and placing significant pressure on real-time reconstruction algorithms. One strategy for meeting this challenge is to leverage commodity hardware such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), which can accelerate bandwidth-intensive portions of the reconstruction chain. In particular, FPGAs programmed through high-level synthesis (HLS) offer a promising balance between flexibility and performance, allowing physicists to design …
