Key To Spartina Of The West Coast Based On Vegetative Characteristics, Mary Pfauth, Mark D. Sytsma, Mitchell Kloer, Jennifer Riddle, Jacob Rose, Gabriel E. Campbell

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

In their natural condition, Pacific Coast estuaries have extensive open mudflats in the intertidal area that are important shorebird feeding habitat and are used for oystering and recreational fishing. Several non-native cordgrass species are invading Pacific estuaries and damaging these functions and uses. Early detection is critical to effective management of cordgrass infestation. This key is intended to provide an easy-to-use reference for quick identification of Spartina (synonym: Sporobolus) species on the Pacific coast. We choose to focus on vegetative characteristics here, since flowers are not always visible when it can be advantageous to survey.

Holographic Sensors For The Detection Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Graceson Antony Jan 2026

Holographic Sensors For The Detection Of Volatile Organic Compounds, Graceson Antony

Doctoral

Volatile organic compound (VOC) monitoring at parts-per-million (ppm) concentration levels is essential for occupational safety, indoor air quality, and regulatory compliance. Although holographic gas sensors have been widely investigated, most operate in reflection mode as qualitative visual indicators, with limited quantitative evaluation of sensing mechanisms and scarce systematic demonstrations of repeatable multi-cycle validation for VOCs at ppm concentrations. A physics-based optimisation framework for transmission-mode holographic gas sensors which can bridge this gap has remained largely undeveloped.

This thesis presents the development and optimisation of real-time transmission-mode volume phase transmission holographic grating (VPTHG) sensors for ppm-level VOC detection. A comprehensive theoretical …

Titletown Madness: Title Insurance Through The Lens Of Tribal Jurisdiction And The Lasting Legacy Of Allotment, Nicholas Stamates Jan 2026

Titletown Madness: Title Insurance Through The Lens Of Tribal Jurisdiction And The Lasting Legacy Of Allotment, Nicholas Stamates

Marquette Law Review

American Property Law and Federal Indian Law have a conjoined history going back to Johnson v. MʻIntosh, 21 U.S. (8 Wheat.) 543 (1823), where the Supreme Court ruled that private citizens could not purchase aboriginal title from Indians. Decades later, the Dawes General Allotment Act of 1887 resulted in non-Indian fee simple landowners purchasing what the Federal Government deemed “surplus” federal land in the un-allotted former Indian land, which is still part of the Reservation’s legal jurisdiction. An unintended consequence of this process, which resulted in a checkerboard pattern of land title in Indian Reservations across the country, has recently …

The Boundaries Of Law And Politics: Disputes Over Wisconsin's Maps For Political Districts Have A Long History, But The Last Few Years Have Brought Especially Intense Court Battles, John D. Johnson Jan 2026

The Boundaries Of Law And Politics: Disputes Over Wisconsin's Maps For Political Districts Have A Long History, But The Last Few Years Have Brought Especially Intense Court Battles, John D. Johnson

Marquette Law Review

Wisconsin’s 2020 redistricting cycle was long, bitterly contested, and subject to dramatic reversals of fortune. Yet perhaps the most unusual feature of the whole process was how it ended in 2024: with a legislative redistricting plan passed by Republican legislators and signed by a Democratic Governor. Redistricting of the Wisconsin Legislature by divided political branches had occurred only three times prior in state history—in 1852, 1856, and 1971.

Redistricting may once have seemed a matter primarily of interest to political insiders. But the boundaries of legislative districts have great impact on politics and power, as the events of the last …

Black Suburbanization: Potent Hope Or Illusory Promise?, Mary Jo Wiggins Jan 2026

Black Suburbanization: Potent Hope Or Illusory Promise?, Mary Jo Wiggins

Marquette Law Review

Suburbs are popular. People like living in them, and scholars like studying them. For the first time, more Americans live in the suburbs than in central cities. Perhaps more noteworthy is that more Black Americans live in the suburbs than ever before. Given these realities, it is not surprising that the suburbs have become a laboratory for analyzing a host of political, legal, and economic questions.

In previous scholarship, I examined the complex phenomenon of Black suburbanization through the lens of two communities: South DeKalb, Georgia and Prince George’s County, Maryland. These communities were part of what I called the …

Justified: Reasonable Beliefs, True Beliefs, And Self-Defense, Michael D. Cicchini Jan 2026

Justified: Reasonable Beliefs, True Beliefs, And Self-Defense, Michael D. Cicchini

Marquette Law Review

A defendant is charged with criminal battery and asserts self-defense at trial. The defense calls witnesses who would testify that, about ten minutes before the fight, the alleged victim said he was going to “find” the defendant and “end him.” But the trial judge excludes the testimony because the threat, while heard by several witnesses, was not communicated to the defendant. Therefore, the judge says, the threat cannot be relevant in determining whether the defendant “reasonably believed” he was in imminent danger at that time.

This Article explores the theoretical foundation for this common ruling and demonstrates why it is …

Toward A Framework For A Law Of Electronic Intangibles Liability, James M. Beck, Alexander M. Deguire Jan 2026

Toward A Framework For A Law Of Electronic Intangibles Liability, James M. Beck, Alexander M. Deguire

Marquette Law Review

Products liability law was built for a world of gears, levers, and physical failure. It now confronts a marketplace dominated by software, data, algorithms, and artificial intelligence—objects that do not break, shatter, or wear out, but nevertheless cause real and sometimes catastrophic harm. Courts and commentators increasingly respond to this tension by asking whether these digital systems are “product-like” enough to be squeezed into existing strict liability frameworks. This Article argues that this is the wrong question.

The Article traces the historical foundations of strict products liability; explains why courts have traditionally excluded intangibles from its reach; and examines recent …

Access Denied: The Injustice Of Plra Exhaustion, Rachel Kincaid Jan 2026

Access Denied: The Injustice Of Plra Exhaustion, Rachel Kincaid

Marquette Law Review

Law students learn to “think like a lawyer” by studying appellate decisions that contain extensive reasoning and result from vigorous advocacy by lawyers on both sides. These well-reasoned decisions allow students to learn how to distill legal rules from judicial opinions: to focus on the rationale behind a court’s decision so that they might be able to predict how the court would deal with a different factual scenario. But this focus on extensively reasoned and argued appellate court opinions obscures the access-to-justice crisis plaguing our legal systems; most people cannot even afford to pay a lawyer to represent them, let …

A Leaner Way To Lien Personal Property: The Case For Streamlining And Centralizing Judicial Lien Securitization And Perfection On Personal Property, Lucas L. Schneider Jan 2026

A Leaner Way To Lien Personal Property: The Case For Streamlining And Centralizing Judicial Lien Securitization And Perfection On Personal Property, Lucas L. Schneider

Marquette Law Review

The modern practice of law includes increasingly efficient and centralized manners to alert the world of secured interests in assets, yet securing and perfecting judgment liens in personal property remains entrenched in opaque, historic practices. This Article explores several states’ systems, along with real world scenarios, highlighting the problems with these practices, concluding in proposing a streamlined, efficient fix.

A Matter Of Life And Death: Give Me All Of Your Money And I'Ll Give You Healthcare, Shilanka I. Lewis

Marquette Law Review

The Medicaid Estate Recovery Program (MERP) is a federal mandate requiring states to recover costs of long-term care and related services provided to Medicaid beneficiaries from their estates after death. This Article explores the core arguments supporting and opposing MERP, offering a balanced analysis of its ethical, legal, and economic dimensions. Proponents argue that estate recovery ensures fiscal responsibility by recouping taxpayer dollars and preventing wealth transfer from those who received public assistance to their heirs. Proponents contend that MERP upholds the principle that Medicaid is a need-based program and a payor of last resort. Conversely, critics argue that MERP …

Reining In State Judicial Conduct Commissions, Rebecca Frank Dallet Jan 2026

Reining In State Judicial Conduct Commissions, Rebecca Frank Dallet

Marquette Law Review

There is a new threat to judicial independence: state judicial conduct commissions. These bodies are charged with holding judges accountable for violations of state ethics rules. But what was intended to be a shield for the public against judicial misconduct has instead been turned into a sword used against judges. As the judiciary has become more politicized, commissions are being overhauled to include more partisan political appointments. Unfounded complaints against judges are easy to file and to make public, despite confidentiality rules. And investigations of complaints may take many months, leaving judges in limbo as to what they can or …

Childhood Through Motion: Reimagining Everyday Mobility Corridors For Learning, Independence, And Exploration, Olivia Liljegren Jan 2026

Childhood Through Motion: Reimagining Everyday Mobility Corridors For Learning, Independence, And Exploration, Olivia Liljegren

City and Regional Planning

This project proposes the Childhood Through Motion (CTM) Framework, which reimagines how everyday mobility corridors can support children’s development through repeated engagement with integrated interventions along key neighborhood routes. Building on existing approaches such as Safe Routes to School and Playful Learning Landscapes, the framework integrates mobility, play, learning, and social interaction into a connected system of corridors and nodes distributed throughout a neighborhood street network. Rather than treating mobility, play, and learning as separate, the framework explores how developmental opportunities can be integrated into the public spaces children use every day.

The framework is organized through five guiding principles …

How Do Individual And Environmental Covariates Impact The Immune Response Of Deer Mice In Western Montana?, Rachel A. Throckmorton, Angela Luis Jan 2026

How Do Individual And Environmental Covariates Impact The Immune Response Of Deer Mice In Western Montana?, Rachel A. Throckmorton, Angela Luis

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Sin Nombre Virus (SNV) is an exceptional model system for studying wildlife disease because of how simple it is to capture, take samples, and obtain disease status from the primary host. Immune response is an important factor to consider when testing for SNV because it can affect susceptibility of the host as well as transmission of the virus. We examined individual and environmental conditions that may predict immune response and therefore possibly SNV transmission in wild populations. We investigated whether SNV infection status, reproductive status, sex, and season correlate with immune response through examining total white blood cell (WBC) counts …

Peers, Programs, And Prevention: A Holistic Approach To Adolescent Suicide In Schools, Kate Nelson Jan 2026

Peers, Programs, And Prevention: A Holistic Approach To Adolescent Suicide In Schools, Kate Nelson

Graduate Research Papers

Adolescent suicide is the second leading cause of death among adolescents in the U.S. and is a growing public health concern. Schools are often the most accessible way for students to access mental health support. This makes them uniquely positioned to intervene when a student is experiencing suicidal ideation. Schools are a key environment for implementing suicide prevention strategies and providing education on suicide and depression. This paper reviews four evidence-based school-based suicide prevention programs, including Signs of Suicide (SOS), Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM), Hope Squad, and Sources of Strength. The paper also examines the concept of school …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Background: Sleep disturbances elevate brain amyloid-beta (Aβ) levels and represent a modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The orexin/hypocretin system regulates sleep–wake behavior and has emerged as a therapeutic target in AD; however, the effects of FDA-approved dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) on amyloid pathology remain unclear. We compared lemborexant, an FDA-approved DORA, to doxepin, an antihistaminergic sleep medication, on amyloid pathology and microglial responses in PSAPP mice.

Methods: PSAPP mice received lemborexant (10 or 30 mg/kg/day), doxepin (35 mg/kg/day), or vehicle for 6 weeks beginning prior to plaque onset or 4 weeks after established pathology. Sleep was assessed …

Mosaics: An Artist’S Thesis Of Identity Through Memory And Belonging, Sofia I. Menco

Honors Theses

Conceptually, this thesis engages visually with Magical Realism as pioneered by Colombian writer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as well as the symbolic color fields of Colombian painter Alejandro Obregon, and the narrative portraiture of Spanish illustrator, David de las Heras, by situating my personal narratives within broader themes of memory, color symbolism and faith-based art. Having this visual research in mind, I drew a lot of inspiration from Colombian Artisan Practices such as Mochilas Wayuu and the folkloric colors of such. At the same time, I explored the sociological and religious lens coming from a theoretical approach of George Hebert Mead’s …

Paradise Lost And Character Motivation: Sinful Behavior Or Inferiority Complex?, Esperanza Barrios Jan 2026

Paradise Lost And Character Motivation: Sinful Behavior Or Inferiority Complex?, Esperanza Barrios

Honors Theses

Sin is a concept that is always viewed through a religious perspective. But, through Paradise Lost, John Milton was able to bring further understanding towards human nature and one’s own sense of committing what’s perceived as sinful behavior without the veil of religion glazing over academics' understanding. In religious terms, sinful behavior is the idea of defying God’s commandments, but for this research, sinful behavior may be described as abnormal behavior that damages our best interests and relationships, usually for selfish gains. Each of Milton’s main characters, Satan, Adam, and Eve, fell from grace because all three damaged their relationship …

“Wandering Between Two Worlds”: From One Marshall To Another, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

This personal essay chronicles my journey from Marshall, Texas, where I lived for 14 years, to Marshall University, where I have taught for 17 years. I discuss not only the move itself, but a pivot from Victorian studies to Appalachian studies, a change I made so I could focus on the region in which I live. The essay’s central question is mentioned in the title: how long do I have to live here before I can call myself a West Virginian, and before others will regard me that way as well? Is 17 years enough? If not, will I eventually …

Pricing Lies: Government Contracts And The False Claims Act, Fernando Mendoza López Jan 2026

Pricing Lies: Government Contracts And The False Claims Act, Fernando Mendoza López

Marquette Law Review

Courts have recognized the federal government’s use of government contracts not only as a commercial transaction but also as an instrument of policy. Governments routinely seek to promote small business interests, domestic industry, women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned businesses. However, in cases of fraud involving these policy provisions, courts have consistently failed to recognize this dual nature of government contracts.

The intangible benefits that governments gain from these preferential policies complicate damage calculations for courts when dealing with fraud. Such complications have led to inconsistencies and the emergence of three main approaches. First, some courts have assessed that the government …

Artificial Intelligence And The Article 36 Legal Review, Russell Buchan

Saint Louis University Law Journal

This article examines the application of the Article 36 legal review obligation to new weapons, means, or methods of warfare that make use of artificial intelligence. This article assesses: the customary international law status of Article 36; who must conduct legal reviews; what must be reviewed; when a legal review must occur; the legal standards against which reviews must take place; and the conduct and nature of legal reviews. This article argues that, properly interpreted, legal reviews under Article 36 should be seen as a dyadic process that can help inform commanders as to how complex and high-powered technologies such …
