Kinetiscan: Evaluating A Browser-Based Monocular System For 3d Gait Analysis, Thu Tran '29, Stephen Agyemang '28, Rueben Addison Oct 2026

Kinetiscan: Evaluating A Browser-Based Monocular System For 3d Gait Analysis, Thu Tran '29, Stephen Agyemang '28, Rueben Addison

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Gait analysis is a useful tool for early detection, diagnosis of neurological and orthopedic conditions, and rehabilitation support. The gold standard for assessment of gait requires laboratory motion capture systems. The system requires calibrated cameras, reflective markers, specialist software, and professionals to operate. For these reasons, gait analysis is expensive and inaccessible in some clinics, schools, and home settings where continuous or early monitoring would have a significant impact. KinetiScan addresses this gap with just a single ordinary camera. This browser-based system uses transformer architecture to perform 2D-to-3D mapping. When provided with distance and height entries, KinetiScan outputs the 3D …

Accumulating evidence demonstrates that the central nervous system (CNS) is not disconnected from the peripheral immune system; however, precisely how the adaptive immune system surveils the CNS remains a critical question. Recent findings reveal that channels between the skull and the dura mater facilitate the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid and immune cells between the CNS and skull bone marrow of mice under both homeostatic and disease conditions

Despite the well-documented benefits of simulation-based education, their use remains limited in undergraduate health management programs. Faculty might be unfamiliar with the processes required to design and implement high-quality simulations. This article presents a structured methodology—grounded in Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice and The Jeffries Simulation Theory—through the experience of an undergraduate healthcare policy and management course at a large urban public university. This article focuses on describing the multilayered Online Standardized Participant Simulation including a detailed description of the simulation design, prebriefing, online standardized participant scenario, and debriefing. A unique feature of the shared simulation experience is the …

Don’T Sweat Interaction Trees Proof-Guided Local Variable Lifting For Interaction Trees, Yiming Lin, Ian Kariniemi, Yao Li Oct 2026

Don’T Sweat Interaction Trees Proof-Guided Local Variable Lifting For Interaction Trees, Yiming Lin, Ian Kariniemi, Yao Li

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Verifying existing software is hard: Programs are developed in languages not amenable to verification, involve complicated optimizations that obscure the underlying logic, and are gigantic in size. In this paper, we propose a way to ease this pain via a simplification framework that employs interaction trees as a language-agnostic interface. We show that local variable lifting, the technique underlying AutoCorres for the Simpl language, can be generalized to interaction trees via an implementation in Rocq. A key challenge with simplifying interaction trees is that they are highly dynamic structures and we would like our approach to work with mostly uninterpreted …

This project began with family interviews during winter break and culminated in lesson planning and implementation during their science methods course in the spring semester. The …

Women's Experiences Of Menstrual Pain And Perceptions Of Acupuncture: A Qualitative Study, Weiting Liu, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Khui Hung Lee Oct 2026

Women's Experiences Of Menstrual Pain And Perceptions Of Acupuncture: A Qualitative Study, Weiting Liu, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Khui Hung Lee

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction: Menstrual pain is a common reproductive health concern that can substantially disrupt physical, emotional, and social well-being, yet it is frequently normalised and insufficiently addressed within healthcare encounters. Acupuncture is increasingly used as a complementary approach for menstrual pain management; however, little qualitative research has explored how women understand, interpret, and navigate this option within their menstrual care.

Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using four online focus groups with 14 women aged 19–46 years residing in Australia who self-reported primary dysmenorrhea. Participants were purposively sampled from respondents to a previous cross-sectional survey study who had indicated willingness …

A Folk Taxonomy Of Magic, Gustav Kuhn, Cyril Thomas, Griffiths Thomas Oct 2026

A Folk Taxonomy Of Magic, Gustav Kuhn, Cyril Thomas, Griffiths Thomas

School of Psychology

Magic tricks provide a uniquely powerful window onto the boundaries of what people consider possible, and the ways in which those boundaries can be challenged. Although there exists an effectively infinite variety of magic tricks, relatively little is known about how different magical effects relate to one another at a psychological level. Previous attempts to classify magic have largely relied on the judgments of a small number of expert magicians, rather than capturing people’s intuitive understanding of magical phenomena. Here, we introduce a new multi-dimensional taxonomy of magic that treats the observable effect (e.g., an object vanishing) and the attributed …

Organizational Systems, Support Structures, And Principal Retention In Urban Secondary Schools: A Job Demands And Resources Analysis Of Belonging And Isolation, Meredith L. Perry Oct 2026

Organizational Systems, Support Structures, And Principal Retention In Urban Secondary Schools: A Job Demands And Resources Analysis Of Belonging And Isolation, Meredith L. Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Principal turnover remains a challenge in high-poverty secondary schools, where leadership stability is critical to school improvement and student success. Although factors associated with principal attrition have been studied, less is known about how district-level systems and support structures shape principals’ experiences of connection, belonging, and professional isolation. This qualitative multiple-case study was conducted within a program evaluation context to examine how district policies, processes, and support structures functioned as job demands and job resources influencing principals’ experiences and retention decisions within a large urban school district. Guided by the job demands–resources (JD-R) framework, the study included four secondary principals …

Peninsula Medical School

Background: The Asia Pacific region is home to more than half of the world's 1·93 billion adolescents (aged 10–24 years). Addressing adolescent health in this region is of global importance, but to date a systematic analysis of key contributors to disease in adolescents has not been done, which is a barrier to responsive action. This systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of adolescent health across the Asia Pacific region, at both the subregional and national levels, encompassing burden of disease, mortality, and prevalence of adolescent …

Operationalising Equity In Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, Riley Bibaud, Tom Mullier, Matthew Ashley, Holly Niner, Lauren Stewart, Siân Rees Oct 2026

Operationalising Equity In Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, Riley Bibaud, Tom Mullier, Matthew Ashley, Holly Niner, Lauren Stewart, Siân Rees

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Equity is increasingly recognised as a critical dimension of sustainable ocean governance, yet operational frameworks for incorporating equity considerations into marine governance remain limited. Fisheries management practices have traditionally concentrated on stock sustainability and commercial extraction, often without fully addressing the broader ecosystem dynamics that underpin fish populations throughout key life stages. This study explores how Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) can support more equitable outcomes by applying a beneficiary-centric natural capital framework to the Celtic Sea and Western Channel Pelagic Fisheries Management Plan. A typology of beneficiaries was developed to assess the distribution of ecosystem service benefits, followed by a …

Axillary Surgery In Sentinel Node-Positive Breast Cancer After Neoadjuvant Therapy: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Youssef Zeidan

All Publications

The oncologic value of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for residual node-positive (ypN+) breast cancer after neoadjuvant therapy is uncertain when regional nodal irradiation (RNI) is routinely used. We systematically reviewed comparative evidence on locoregional control and survival outcomes with omission versus completion of ALND. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central were searched from 2000 to 2025 for English-language studies comparing completion ALND with omission of ALND (sentinel lymph node biopsy and/or targeted axillary dissection) among patients with biopsy-proven node-positive breast cancer treated with neoadjuvant therapy who had residual nodal disease at surgery. Two reviewers screened studies and extracted outcomes. We …

Considerations For Research About 2-K A Brief Informed By What Will It Take To Fulfill The Promise Of 2-K?, Sara Amadon, Cristina Medellin-Paz, Lindsey Bravo

Straus Institute for Thriving Children & Families

New York City’s expansion of publicly funded child care for two-year-olds (2-K) presents a unique opportunity to study how a large urban system can build a sustainable, equitable, and developmentally appropriate system for serving young children and their families. As one of the nation's first large-scale public investments in early care and education for two-year-olds, 2-K offers an unprecedented opportunity to conduct research to inform ongoing implementation and program expansion. The knowledge generated from research can support policymakers and practitioners in New York City and other communities seeking to expand access to early care and education.

When Going Alone Feels Right: The Effect Of Solo Cues On Interest In Attending Cultural Events, Inyoung Lee, Sang-Hoon Kim Sep 2026

When Going Alone Feels Right: The Effect Of Solo Cues On Interest In Attending Cultural Events, Inyoung Lee, Sang-Hoon Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

With the rise of solo consumers, cultural event marketers face a challenge: how can events appeal to solo consumers without marginalizing group consumers? To address this question, the impact of solo cues in marketing communication is examined through the lens of role and script theory. Two experiments demonstrate that solo cues, which signal the inclusion of solo consumers among attendees, increase solo consumers' attendance interest but do not affect group consumers. For solo consumers, the impact of solo cues is driven by anticipated enjoyment and is particularly pronounced for events entailing a high (vs. low) level of social interaction, where …

Bridging The Intention-Behavior Gap In Adopting Zero-Waste Grocery Retail Store, Elizabeth Jacob, Salil Sahadevan Sep 2026

Bridging The Intention-Behavior Gap In Adopting Zero-Waste Grocery Retail Store, Elizabeth Jacob, Salil Sahadevan

Asia Marketing Journal

Growing interest in sustainability within marketing has renewed attention to zero-waste retail, yet it remains largely niche. This study investigates the challenges limiting zero-waste retail adoption and explores consumer expectations through key stakeholder interviews and a large-scale consumer survey in India. Building on earlier work that focused primarily on individual barriers, it incorporates structural factors and the interconnected nature of these obstacles. Adoption of zero-waste shopping practices is constrained by emotional labor, cognitive overload, and systemic friction. Cultural norms favoring convenience and hygiene reinforce disposability, and the lack of conventional packaging creates logistical hurdles. In this connection, the study identifies …

Risk, Benefit, And Trust In Emotionally Intense Services: A Moderated Mediation Model Of Home-Based Palliative Care Adoption In China, Cong Zhuang, Wenfeng Wei, Kyung-Min Kim

Asia Marketing Journal

As aging populations expand across Asia, home-based palliative care remains underutilized despite its potential to preserve dignity and emotional well-being. This study examines adoption decisions under emotionally intense uncertainty by testing a moderated mediation model in which perceived risk reduces adoption intention through diminished perceived benefit, and trust conditions the risk–benefit appraisal link. A scenario-based experiment with 400 Chinese participants was analyzed using PROCESS Models 4 and 7 with bias-corrected bootstrapping. Results show that perceived benefit fully mediates the effect of perceived risk on adoption intention. Trust shows evidence of conditioning the association between perceived risk and perceived benefit; however, …
