Heat is the leading cause of weather-related mortality in the United States, yet it remains under-recognized despite rising mortality and intensifying climate trends. This qualitative study explored decision-making processes regarding heat hazards among 15 county-level emergency managers in the Northern Gulf Coast region using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as a guiding framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, combining deductive coding of PMT constructs with inductive identification of independent themes. Key findings showed reliance on verbal persuasion and prior experience as primary information sources, threat appraisals moderated by normalization and deprioritization of heat due to other …
The Role Of Latinx And Hispanic Identity In The Presentation Of Hoarding Symptoms, Caitlyn Ashley Nix
The Role Of Latinx And Hispanic Identity In The Presentation Of Hoarding Symptoms, Caitlyn Ashley Nix
Theses and Dissertations
Although people who identify as Hispanic and Latinx make up approximately 19% of the United States population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023), most research into hoarding disorder is comprised of White, non-Latinx samples. Thus, the current study investigated Hispanic and Latinx ethnicity as a predictor of several facets of hoarding disorder. Previous literature has shown lower risk for Hispanic and Latinx individuals in terms of several physical health outcomes when compared to individuals of similar socioeconomic status (Markides & Coreil, 1986), though mental health outcomes have more variation by subgroup (Barragán et al., 2020). Previous research has also shown that collectivistic …

Latent Profile Analysis Of Trauma Appraisal: Associations With Psychological Problems And Substance Use Moderated By Emotion Dysregulation In College Students With Trauma History, Tram Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
Empirical research suggests that trauma-related appraisals have significant mental health implications. A prior meta-analysis reported that maladaptive trauma-related cognitions play a central role in the development and maintenance of poor coping strategies (i.e., substance use) and posttraumatic stress disorder. However, less is known about the relationships among maladaptive trauma cognitions, emotion dysregulation, and risk for substance use. The current study sought to provide a comprehensive examination of the relationships among trauma appraisals, emotion dysregulation, psychological problems, and substance use. A systematic review highlighted the lack of a person-centered approach to trauma appraisal research, as well as a lack of research …

Promoting The Bipartisan Dimension Of Political Leadership: A Study Of The Impact Of A Normative Intervention With Newly Elected Members Of Congress, Jaime M. Ruvalcaba
Dissertations
The U.S. political system is more polarized now than at any time in the past century, as evidenced by the rise of political incivility, legislative gridlock, and hyperpolarization. To date, most studies and efforts have focused on institutional strategies to explain, transform, and mitigate the challenges posed to the political environment. By contrast, little attention has been paid to the normative or values-based behaviors of leaders to either explain or influence political leadership in ways that positively impact the political environment. Fortunately, some organizational programs, like Harvard’s Bipartisan Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress, have taken a different tack, …

Decentralized And Privacy-Preserving Intelligent Systems Via Federated Learning For Healthcare Monitoring And Financial Security, George Anim
Theses and Dissertations
The rapid expansion of data-driven methodologies in healthcare and finance is increasingly constrained by ethical, regulatory, and security requirements that limit centralized data sharing. Sensitive information—including electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings and inter-institutional financial transaction logs—remains siloed, reducing opportunities for collaborative model development and limiting generalizability across heterogeneous environments. In healthcare, epileptic seizure prediction is challenged by inter-patient variability, scarce and non-IID EEG data distributions, and the need for real-time inference on resource-constrained wearable devices. In finance, anti-money laundering (AML) detection is complicated by decentralized and dynamically evolving transaction networks, temporal-structural dependencies, limited labeled data, and information-sharing restrictions. This dissertation proposes a …

Engineering Identity is rooted in the theoretical framework of Identity Theory, whereas Persistence is grounded in Expectancy-Value Theory. Previous research has shown a positive correlation between engineering identity and persistence among traditional university engineering students; …
Designing A Measure Of County-Level Food Access, Logan Mattingly
Designing A Measure Of County-Level Food Access, Logan Mattingly
Theses and Dissertations
Equitable access to food is a central component of food security and a key determinant of health. Yet current approaches to food access measurement remain fragmented and limited. This study introduces the first of its kind data driven, multidimensional, county-level measure of food access in the United States. Drawing on publicly available data, I employ a factor analysis pipeline to construct a suite of latent variable estimates that represent pillars of food access. This model-based approach allows synthesis of these diverse measures into the resulting Food Access Index (FAI), while explicitly accounting for measurement error and addressing missing data. Resulting …
A Comprehensive Approach To Cognitive Offloading, Oscar Daniel Ramirez Perez
A Comprehensive Approach To Cognitive Offloading, Oscar Daniel Ramirez Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Learners use a variety of strategies to engage with real-world learning material. One such strategy is cognitive offloading: the reliance on external stores to alleviate internal cognitive demand. Past research has found that learners remember less when they study with the expectation of access to an external store during a subsequent test relative to when they study without that expectation. One proposed theory is the study effort hypothesis: when learners expect access to an external store, they reduce their encoding effort based on the belief that their internal memory of the information will be less important when they have access …

The Gut-Bladder Axis: How Symbiont Microbes Alter Urinary Tract Infections, Benjamin S. Olson
The Gut-Bladder Axis: How Symbiont Microbes Alter Urinary Tract Infections, Benjamin S. Olson
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Consequently, they are one of the leading indications for antibiotic prescription. Despite the typically successful treatment of an acute UTI, recurrent infections are exceedingly common, particularly among women. Nearly a quarter of otherwise healthy women will suffer recurrent UTIs (rUTI) after a primary UTI; why these select individuals are continually afflicted is unkown. There are no successful therapeutics to treat rUTI representing a gap not just in the medical toolkit but in our understanding of why rUTI is so prevalent. There are many hypotheses for the risk factors …
