The Underlying Connections Between Drug Abuse And Criminal Involvement, Jessica Sedor
The Underlying Connections Between Drug Abuse And Criminal Involvement, Jessica Sedor
Master of Arts in Human Services
In this composition, an analysis about the relationship between substance abuse and criminal engagement within specific types of crimes is explored. While examining this relationship, the importance of forensic rehabilitation within the criminal justice system is approached through advocacy of identifying risk factors and intergenerational patterns amongst the youth to reduce the abusive cycle of crime and addiction. This paper reflects the evident significance that it is imperative that human services professionals are aware of this relationship and how it can influence and impact one’s judgment, personality, decision making, and other criminogenic behaviors and attitudes. It is critical that the …
Breaking The Cycle: From Victimization To Offending Through The Lens Of Human Services, Colette R. Penalosa
Breaking The Cycle: From Victimization To Offending Through The Lens Of Human Services, Colette R. Penalosa
Master of Arts in Human Services
The victim-offender overlap challenges the common view that victims and offenders are separately labeled by recognizing that both groups have experienced significant childhood trauma, physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, neglect, and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Current research implies these experiences can increase the risk of offending as they all influence cognitive and behavioral development while leaving criminal behavior undetermined. The purpose of this capstone is to analyze the relationship between childhood victimization and offending from a human service perspective; analyzing the pathways a victim takes on the road to offending. Research conducted will focus on exploring the victim-offender overlap, …

How Does The Science Of Reading Approach Enhance Small Reading Group Instruction?, Destiny M. Morman
Graduate Teacher Education
This paper examined how the Science of Reading (SOR) practices enhance student success in small-group reading. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to analyze which SOR-aligned instructional practices are the most beneficial for promoting student success in small-group settings and to examine practices that may be less effective. Effective reading practices are crucial for small-group instruction (Smith et al., 2022). When instruction is strategically designed around students’ specific reading needs, educators can provide a more targeted and personalized support that may be difficult to achieve during whole-group instruction. During small-group learning, teachers can differentiate instruction by aligning lessons with …
Who Decides The Dead? Interpreting Washington’S Disposition Of Remains Statute, Wyatt Young
Who Decides The Dead? Interpreting Washington’S Disposition Of Remains Statute, Wyatt Young
Seattle University Law Review
Washington’s disposition-of-remains statute, RCW 68.50.160, is designed to honor a decedent’s expressed wishes regarding the control and disposition of their body after death. Yet recent litigation reveals a critical gap between the statute’s intent-centered design and its practical enforceability. In Larotonda v. Blackburn, a trial court acknowledged that irreparable harm would occur if a decedent’s burial wishes were ignored but nonetheless denied relief on the grounds that the individual designated to carry out those wishes lacked standing. The result was a legal paradox: a statute that recognizes decedent autonomy in theory but withholds any meaningful mechanism for its enforcement …
Are Individual Mental Health Issues Treated Fairly By The Criminal Justice System?, Taylor Anderson
Are Individual Mental Health Issues Treated Fairly By The Criminal Justice System?, Taylor Anderson
Master of Arts in Human Services
The intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system is a critical area of inquiry that highlights the complexities of addressing psychological disorders within our legal frameworks. This paper explores the prevalence of mental health issues among incarcerated individuals and examines how systemic deficiencies contribute to a cycle of recidivism and inadequate treatment. By analyzing the existing literature, the research aims to illuminate the pressing need for a reform in the handling of mentally ill offenders, advocating for a shift towards more rehabilitative approaches rather than punitive measures. The implications of those findings extend beyond individual cases to societal …
Representations Of Cartel Leaders In Narcocorridos: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Gael Gamboa
Representations Of Cartel Leaders In Narcocorridos: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Gael Gamboa
Theses and Dissertations
Narcocorridos have become one of the most recognized expressions of narcoculture in Mexico. Despite growing scholarly interest in narcoculture, relatively few studies have examined how cartel leaders are represented across narcocorridos. This study addresses this gap by examining the symbolic representations of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, and Amado Carrillo Fuentes in narcocorrido lyrics. The study is guided by cultural criminology and subculture theory; this study employed a qualitative research design using reflexive thematic analysis. A purposive sample of 25 narcocorridos was analyzed to identify recurring patterns in the representation of cartel leadership. As a result, six …
Personal Authenticity For Engagement And Transfer In Introductory Cybersecurity Education, Daniel T. Hickey, Ronald J. Kantor
Personal Authenticity For Engagement And Transfer In Introductory Cybersecurity Education, Daniel T. Hickey, Ronald J. Kantor
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Abstract—This conceptual/theoretical paper explores how personal authenticity might promote generative learning in introductory cybersecurity courses. Generative learning transfers confidently to future educational, professional, personal, and testing situations. This cycle of design-based research addresses the concern that more typical professionally authentic contexts (e.g., hospitals, banks, etc.) may be alien and overwhelming to many students, particularly those in introductory courses and/or from non-professional families and communities. If so, this leads to “inert” knowledge that does not transfer. Personal authenticity is rooted in expansive framing, a modern theory of learning transfer. We reframe expansive framing as personal authenticity to make it …

‘Passing’ The Baton Of Trauma: Queer Failure Of The Women’S Sport Policy Working Group’S Anti-Trans ‘Position’, Meredith M. Bagley, Mary Anne Taylor, Sarah F. Price
Publications and Research
Engaging in critical rhetorical theory and methodology, we interrogate the contemporary landscape of anti-trans backlash in women’s sport. Specifically, we read the ‘TERF wars’ (Pearce et al.) across critiques of biofeminism (Pape) and whiteness (Fischer) while drawing upon critical social science research into trauma-bonding, bullying, and the structural impacts of gender verification policies. Our analysis focuses on the Women’s Sports Policy Working Group (WSPWG), offering a trauma-informed reading of the WSPWG’s ‘Position’ statement to illuminate how lesbian female athletes who were previously slandered for failing to meet femininity norms in sport are unable to overcome that trauma to recognize and …

Feasibility Of A Nurse Led Sailing Program To Enhance Resilience Among Autistic School Aged Children, Myrian Sze Nga Fan, William Ho Cheung Li, Laurie Long Kwan Ho, Kay Rawbone, Kai Chow Choi, Rob Allen, Trinitey Letterman, Sek Ying Chair
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Promoting resilience and mental health among autistic children remains a global health priority, consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the World Health Organisation’s vision for inclusive, community based care. While existing interventions focus on functional outcomes, resilience among autistic children remains understudied. To address this gap, a nurse led community based sailing program was developed and implemented in partnership with Sailability Hong Kong.
A pilot assessor blinded, parallel group randomised controlled trial evaluated the program’s feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects. Children aged 7–12 years with autism diagnosis were recruited, then randomised to either: (1) an intervention …

On January 31, 2020, Santa Clara County reported California’s (CA) first COVID-19 case. As the pandemic unfolded, health systems were severely strained, and health care workers faced dual exposure risks from their communities and households alongside heightened occupational risk from direct patient care.1,2 For Black and Latinx nurses, COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on their communities intensified stress, fear, and uncertainty, and when combined with the demands of frontline work, greatly increased their risk of psychological distress and burnout. We examined COVID-19’s impact on the mental health and well-being of Black and Latinx nurses in CA.
Method: We conducted an explanatory sequential …

Nurses encounter ethical dilemmas daily in clinical, community, and cross-cultural care settings. Relational ethics provides a guiding foundation for ethical nursing practice by emphasizing human connection, mutual respect, and shared meaning rather than rules, duties, or procedural norms alone. This workshop examines how relational ethics operates across borders, highlighting how nurses adapt their communication strategies, clinical judgment, and ethical reasoning to support individuals whose cultural values, histories, and expectations of care differ from their own. By framing ethics as relational rather than universal, the session positions relational safety as an essential precursor to ethical decision-making and professional accountability.
The workshop …

Achieving and maintaining meaningful change in patient safety outcomes remains an ongoing challenge.(1) Clinical Effectiveness Education (CEE) is a promising method to help address the challenge of creating sustainable change in healthcare. CEE is a comprehensive approach to improving patient safety by educating healthcare team members in methods to use best-evidence to inform care decisions.(2) Two foundational CEE strategies are Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and Quality Improvement (QI). EBP and QI practices have both been shown to have a positive impact on patient safety and return on investment.(1,3) Despite its documented benefits, CEE is not typically covered in-depth in health-professions education …

From Competition To Complementarity: A Case Study Of Arabic-English Language Ideologies At University Of Bisha, Ahmed Yahya Mohammed Al-Hakami
UB Journal for Humanities
This study investigates the coexistence of, and tension between, Arabic and English language ideologies in Saudi higher education, focusing on University of Bisha as a case study. Drawing on quantitative data from online questionnaires (N = 138), this study examines how Arabic and English are ideologically valued, legitimised, and contested across three dimensions, namely identity, academic learning, and status. Using robust statistical analyses, including correlation and repeated-measures testing, the analysis tests whether these ideologies function primarily as competing forces, privileging one language at the expense of the other, or as complementary resources that support students’ academic experience and professional ambition. …
Verses Of Regret In The Holy Quran; A Grammatical And Semantic Study, Samiah Bint Moammes Asiri
Verses Of Regret In The Holy Quran; A Grammatical And Semantic Study, Samiah Bint Moammes Asiri
UB Journal for Humanities
This study: “Verses of Regret in the Holy Qur’an: A Grammatical and Semantic Study” investigates the structures, vocabulary, and stylistic devices associated with regret in the Qur’an through a descriptive-analytical and inductive approach. It analyzes the grammatical constructions and semantic implications of regret, focusing particularly on eschatological scenes depicting the terrors of the Day of Judgment and the futility of late remorse. The findings indicate that regret extends beyond explicit lexical items, manifesting through diverse structures that derive significance from Qur’anic context and grammatical synergy. Notably, the negated present-tense verb la yanfa‘u (does not avail) underscores the impossibility of undoing …

Identity And Cultural Humility Bring A Sense Of Belonging To The Nursing Workforce, Patricia Fernandez, Victoria Ngo, Kupiri Ackerman
Identity And Cultural Humility Bring A Sense Of Belonging To The Nursing Workforce, Patricia Fernandez, Victoria Ngo, Kupiri Ackerman
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Cultural humility frameworks (Tervalon & Murray-García, 1998) are widely used in clinical and professional development settings, however, little empirical evidence exists regarding their impact on teenagers and young adults. As pathway programs emerge to strengthen and diversify the healthcare workforce, understanding whether cultural humility training is developmentally appropriate and impactful for early-career learners is crucial for growing and retaining future nurse leaders.
Methods: As part of a summer pathway program designed to prepare young scholars for a career in healthcare or nursing, we offered a three-day institute that helped students from historical redlined areas to understand the unique and …

When Childcare Becomes A Crime Space In Contemporary Indonesia, Isyana Kurniasari Konoras, Dr. Dra. Vinita Susanti, M.Si
When Childcare Becomes A Crime Space In Contemporary Indonesia, Isyana Kurniasari Konoras, Dr. Dra. Vinita Susanti, M.Si
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Abstract. The increasing incidence of violence against children in daycare institutions reflects a structural crisis in contemporary child protection systems. This study examines the violence case at Little Aresha Daycare in Yogyakarta to identify the criminogenic factors underlying abuse in institutional childcare settings. The research applies a normative-empirical qualitative method through media-based case studies, legal analysis, and criminological interpretation. The findings demonstrate that violence emerged from the convergence of three major factors: structural strain experienced by caregivers, weak capable guardianship within daycare institutions, and the normalization of abusive disciplinary practices. Robert K. Merton’s Strain Theory explains how economic and occupational …

Methamphetamine Trafficking In Indonesia: A Routine Activity And Situational Crime Prevention Perspectives, M Fadli Makarim
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
Abstract. Methamphetamine trafficking represents one of the most significant forms of transnational organised crime affecting Indonesia and appears to be facilitated by Indonesia’s strategic position within global maritime trade networks. Existing explanations have emphasised law enforcement capacity and policy responses, while less attention has been given to the opportunity structures that may facilitate trafficking activities. This study examines how Routine Activity Theory may contribute to explaining methamphetamine trafficking in Indonesia and considers its implications for Situational Crime Prevention. This study employed a structured literature review based on a systematic semantic search of publications indexed in Semantic Scholar and OpenAlex. The …

The Banality Of Evil And Delayed Rehabilitation: Uncovering Post-1965 State Crime Through The Lens Of Decolonial Criminology, Farhan Arif Sumawiharja, S.H., M.Si., M.Krim
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
This study sets out to reconstruct the history and structural repression that followed the 1965–1966 events in Indonesia—events that have long been reduced to a simple “horizontal conflict” between ordinary citizens. Using a socio-historical method, the study examines a wide range of historical literature and documents in order to reframe this violence as a State Crime, seen through the lenses of Critical Criminology and Decolonial Criminology. The findings show that the New Order regime borrowed the tools of subjugation first developed in the colonial era to crush progressive groups—a project that, in essence, served the interests of global capitalism during …

Symbolic Reform And Police Legitimacy In Indonesia, Nur Zena Anggita Raissa
Jurnal Kriminologi Indonesia
The Indonesian National Police (Polri) are facing a sustained crisis of legitimacy amid increasing public distrust, digital activism, and intensified external oversight. While reform has been repeatedly promised since the post-authoritarian transition, institutional change remains fragmented and largely symbolic. This article examines Polri’s reform trajectory through a criminological lens, drawing on theories of social solidarity (Durkheim), procedural justice (Tyler), and the sociology of professions (Abbott) to analyze the interaction between external pressures and internal organizational dysfunctions. Using theory-driven qualitative analysis of corruption cases, recruitment controversies, and public trust surveys, the study argues that Polri’s legitimacy crisis is rooted not only …

A Theoretical Roadmap For Understanding And Mitigating Nursing Incivility, Janet Givler, Lynn Varagona
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Nurse-to-nurse incivility remains a persistent threat to psychological safety, professional relationships, and patient outcomes. Despite growing reliance on cognitive rehearsal training as a targeted strategy, studies suggest incivility is a multidimensional issue shaped by individual behavior, organizational culture, leadership practices, and socio-behavioral forces. This integrative review examined how nine theoretical frameworks collectively deepen understanding of nursing incivility and illuminate a comprehensive, multilevel approach to intervention.
Twenty-one studies published between 2018 and 2023 and retrieved from CINAHL, Medline, ProQuest, and Ovid were appraised using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model [1]. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis guided data synthesis. Oppression Theory …
