Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted using data from the All of Us} Research Program collected between April 23, 2002, and October 1, 2023. Adult participants with repeated eGFR measurements were …

Enzyme Susceptibility And Functionality Of High Protein Retentates And Reconstituted Ingredients, Khushi Dubey Jan 2026

Enzyme Susceptibility And Functionality Of High Protein Retentates And Reconstituted Ingredients, Khushi Dubey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the effects of processing history on the enzymatic susceptibility and functional properties of high-protein dairy ingredients, with a specific focus on ultrafiltered (UF) and microfiltered (MF) retentates and spray-dried powders. While retentates and powders are often used interchangeably in industrial applications, processing steps, such as drying, can induce structural and physicochemical changes that affect protein functionality and enzyme accessibility. Milk protein concentrates (MPC) and micellar casein concentrates (MCC) were standardized to 10% protein and subjected to enzymatic treatments, including proteolysis (Alcalase and rennet) and crosslinking (transglutaminase and laccase). Structural modifications were evaluated using capillary gel electrophoresis, non-protein …

Detecting And Characterizing Latent Subpopulations Of Classes Via Mixture Models, Andrew Simpson Jan 2026

Detecting And Characterizing Latent Subpopulations Of Classes Via Mixture Models, Andrew Simpson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A class of problems in statistical pattern recognition exists in which there is high-dimensional data with few realizations per class, commonly referred to as few-shot learning. Data that arises in forensic source identification, which deals with providing a probabilistic value of evidence with regard to the source of some object, falls into this class of problems. Namely, the data is sampled from a hierarchical sampling process, lives in a high-dimensional space, the number of sources (or classes) tends towards infinity, and there are few observations per source. This can be thought of as a few-shot learning problem. Because of these …

Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) can develop as an acquired systemic disease. However, cases of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) with concurrent CDI are rare. We herein report a case of EGPA following CDI. A 68-year-old woman with a 30-year history of sinusitis and asthma developed CDI, followed by severe renal dysfunction with eosinophilia and elevated myeloperoxidase-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody levels. A renal biopsy confirmed EGPA. Intensive treatment resulted in dialysis discontinuation, while partial improvement in arginine vasopressin secretion suggested a potential link between EGPA and CDI. We also conducted a literature review on concurrent EGPA and CDI. Clinicians should be aware …

The standard for in silico pathogenicity prediction of in-frame insertions and deletions (indels) is less established compared to other types of variations. We aimed to systematically assess the performance of in silico machine learning (ML) tools on a patient cohort with inherited retinal diseases (IRDs). The performance of four ML tools (CADD, FATHMM-indel, VEST4, and MetaRNN-indel) was compared. Among them, MetaRNN-indel showed the best overall results. MetaRNN-indel was then applied to 1013 unsolved IRD patients, identifying two likely pathogenic causal variants in two unrelated IRD patients by confirming clinical phenotypes. Hence, our findings indicate that reliable prediction of the pathogenicity …

Interaction Of The Gram-Positive Human Pathogen Staphylococcus Aureus With Host Lipids, Sharanya Paul Jan 2026

Interaction Of The Gram-Positive Human Pathogen Staphylococcus Aureus With Host Lipids, Sharanya Paul

Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a prominent pathogen that is known to incorporate straight-chain unsaturated fatty acids (SCUFAs) into its lipids in addition to the normally biosynthesized branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) and straight-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Furthermore, it has recently been shown that the incorporation of oleic acid into S. aureus lipids significantly enhanced the growth of the organism at low temperatures due to the greater fluidity imparted to the membrane. Together with others in the Wilkinson and Dahl laboratory, I have shown that low-temperature growth is enhanced by various SCUFAs, including the human antimicrobial fatty acids sapienic acid, linoleic acid, and …
