Clinical Spanish Instruction In Physical Therapist Education: A Quasi-Experimental Comparison Of Instructional Schedules, Rose M. Vallejo, Eric Kruger Jan 2026

Clinical Spanish Instruction In Physical Therapist Education: A Quasi-Experimental Comparison Of Instructional Schedules, Rose M. Vallejo, Eric Kruger

Health Professions Education

Purpose: As the U.S. Hispanic population grows, patients with limited English proficiency encounter health disparities that compromise their care. As a result, clinical Spanish instruction in health professions education has become increasingly necessary to address these disparities. This study compared the effects of two instructional schedules: condensed (8-week) versus distributed (2-year), for a required clinical Spanish course in a physical therapist education program. A secondary aim was to implement a Spanish-language OSCE to assess functional communication proficiency.

Methods: Forty-eight students (mean age 25.0 ± 3.3 years; 54% female) from two consecutive cohorts received 16 hours of flipped classroom Spanish instruction. …

Code-Switching, Identity-Shifting, And Identity Distress Among Black Undergraduate Women Attending Predominantly White Institutions, Erin Smith Jan 2026

Code-Switching, Identity-Shifting, And Identity Distress Among Black Undergraduate Women Attending Predominantly White Institutions, Erin Smith

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Code-switching (altering language or speech) and identity-shifting (modifying appearance or behavior) are adaptive strategies often used by individuals from marginalized groups to navigate environments shaped by dominant cultural norms. Although these behaviors are commonly discussed in qualitative literature, relatively few quantitative studies have examined their psychological correlates among Black undergraduate women attending predominantly White institutions (PWIs). These behaviors may function as coping strategies in response to racialized and gendered expectations, yet the psychological implications of these strategies remain understudied. The present study examined the relationships among identity distress, code-switching, identity-shifting, and gendered racial identity centrality within a diverse sample of …

Toward Urban-Scale Liquefaction Hazard Analysis: Evaluation And Optimization Of Cpt-Based Lateral Displacement Assessment, Varun M. Singh Jan 2026

Toward Urban-Scale Liquefaction Hazard Analysis: Evaluation And Optimization Of Cpt-Based Lateral Displacement Assessment, Varun M. Singh

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Liquefaction-induced lateral spreading is a major type of earthquake-induced ground failure hazard and poses a significant threat to infrastructure systems. While semi-empirical methods, such as Lateral Displacement Index (LDI), have been developed to estimate lateral spreading displacement (LSD), their efficacy for regional-scale liquefaction hazard assessment remains unknown. This study evaluates and improves the LDI method for urban-scale seismic hazard assessments using a comprehensive dataset consisting of 1,713 Cone Penetration Test (CPT) case histories from the 2011 Christchurch, New Zealand earthquake, and high-resolution topographic data. Comparing the predicted LSDs and ground-truth observations from both field investigations and remote-sensing surveys reveals that …

Effects Of Anti-Parkinsonian Medication On Gait During Internal And External Rhythmic Auditory Cueing In Pd, Sidney T Baudendistel, Lauren E Tueth, Ryan P Duncan, Allison M Haussler, Liza Birov, Gammon M Earhart Jan 2026

Effects Of Anti-Parkinsonian Medication On Gait During Internal And External Rhythmic Auditory Cueing In Pd, Sidney T Baudendistel, Lauren E Tueth, Ryan P Duncan, Allison M Haussler, Liza Birov, Gammon M Earhart

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: External and internal auditory cueing strategies improve gait function, including velocity and stride length, in people with Parkinson disease (PD). Further, internal cueing can reduce gait variability, a measure associated with falls. In the present study, we asked whether the efficacy of external and internal rhythmic cues depends on dopaminergic status, i.e., OFF vs. ON medication. This question is relevant to the real-world use of cueing, as dopaminergic medication responsiveness fluctuates for individuals. We measured gait while participants with PD walked with an external cue (music playing aloud) and with an internal cue (mentally singing) in both OFF and …

The Distribution Of A-Numbers Of Hyperelliptic Curves In Characteristic Three, Derek Garton, Jeffrey Lin Thunder, Colin Weir Jan 2026

The Distribution Of A-Numbers Of Hyperelliptic Curves In Characteristic Three, Derek Garton, Jeffrey Lin Thunder, Colin Weir

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper we present a new approach to counting the proportion of hyperelliptic curves of genus g defined over a finite field Fq with a given a-number. In characteristic three this method gives exact probabilities for curves of the form Y 2 = f(X) with f(X) ∈ Fq[X] monic and cubefree, probabilities that match the data presented by Cais et al. in previous work. These results are sufficient to derive precise estimates (in terms of q) for these probabilities when restricting to squarefree f. As a consequence, for positive integers a and g we show that the nonempty strata …

Congruences For Hecke Eigenvalues Via Period Polynomials, Liobomir Chiriac Jan 2026

Congruences For Hecke Eigenvalues Via Period Polynomials, Liobomir Chiriac

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study a conjecture motivated by Coleman and Stein’s work on approximating eigenforms of infinite slope by those of finite slopes, which was recast by Rustom [‘Congruences modulo prime powers of Hecke eigenvalues in level 1’, Res. Number Theory 5(1) (2019), Article no. 10, 27 pages] as a congruence for the second Fourier coefficient. We establish the weight condition required for this coefficient to be divisible by nine and obtain the full conjecture under a natural ramification hypothesis. The proof uses period polynomials, especially Zagier’s description of the Hecke action on them.

Becoming A Shape, Becoming Yourself: Geometry, Identity, And Belonging In An Early Childhood Classroom, Eva Thanheiser, Molly Robinson, Simon Byeonguk Han, Amanda T. Sugimoto, Courtney Koestler, Mathew D. Felton-Koestler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper examines how a first-grade geometry lesson became a site for exploring shape, selfhood, and belonging in an early childhood classroom. Drawing on interaction analysis of a lesson built around the picture book The Greedy Triangle , we show how children named personal strengths, identified shapes, followed a triangle through changing categories, reflected on why they liked being themselves, and used their bodies to form polygons. We ask what counts as mathematical activity in this lesson and argue that mathematics is not limited to naming shapes. It also involves noticing attributes, negotiating criteria, tracking transformation, coordinating bodies, and reasoning …

The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson Jan 2026

The Idea Of Air, Jonathan Skinner-Thompson

Utah Law Review

How we view air, especially clean air, has meaningful normative and practical implications. Today, it is commonly recognized as an exhaustible natural resource. But air was not always thought of as something to be conserved, developed, and used. This Article is the first to explore and interrogate that view. The shift to seeing air as a resource started in the first part of the twentieth century. Previously, air was characterized by its limitless supply of oxygen: a pure public good. Over time, the quality of that good changed, and a precious resource emerged. That resource—especially its chemical and physical characteristics—inspired …

Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky Jan 2026

Prescribed Fire Liability And Administration In Western States: An Empiricalanalysis And Call For Reform, Stephen R. Miller, Anastasia Telesetsky

Utah Law Review

Wildfires have grown exponentially over the last few years due to fuel loads, range- and timber-management policies, and climate change. The cost of fire suppression is also growing in both rural and urban areas. For instance, the 2016 Pioneer Fire in rural Idaho cost around $100 million to fight, while the 2025 urban conflagrations in Los Angeles, California destroyed over 16,000 structures despite an astonishing array of suppression resources deployed. Something new, and something big, in terms of law and policy interventions, is needed to stem the intensity of wildfires. Increasingly, governments, private citizens, and even corporate interests like insurance …

Shedding Light On Cellular Glycolysis Pathway Kinetics: Combining Kinetic, Mechanistic Modelling Approaches With Label Free Microspectroscopic Imaging. (Spectralomics), Nitin Patil

Doctoral

Cellular metabolism and its intricate biochemical mechanisms which allow the conversion of nutrients into energy to sustain life are well understood, leading to numerous breakthroughs in science and technology, human health and wellbeing. From an industrial perspective the pathway kinetics are significant for monitoring cellular bioprocesses, screening desired metabolite phenotypes in drug discovery processes, etc.

An initial review of glycolysis pathway kinetics highlighted the lack of sophisticated approaches to monitor the metabolic pathway kinetics as a function of time in a non-destructive, non-invasive, label-free manner. Fluxomics, a metabolomics based approach providing high-throughput insights, can be considered a gold standard approach, …

The Trademark Bargain: Registration As Disclosure, Dustin Marlan Jan 2026

The Trademark Bargain: Registration As Disclosure, Dustin Marlan

Faculty Publications

This Article highlights the central—and under-theorized—role that disclosure plays within trademark law. By loose analogy, the patent disclosure requirement is a cornerstone of patent law, embodying the “patent bargain” where an inventor must disclose their invention in exchange for a twenty-year monopoly. This quid pro quo is believed to stimulate the progress of science and technology, making patent disclosure the very pulse of the patent regime. However, the fundamental importance of disclosure in trademark law remains underexplored. Like patents, trademark law imposes a rigorous bargain—to obtain the enhanced rights granted by federal registration, trademark owners must first make significant disclosures …

The Hope Industrial Complex: Resisting Manufactured And False Hope With Critical Hope In Peace Education, Thailand's Refugee Context, Staci B. Martin, Hayso Thako, Rey Ty, Sudarat Tuntivivat, Rattanak Ly

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Our Point of Departure (POD) argues that the type of hope fostered within the Karen refugee community in Thailand – manufactured, false, or critical – shapes the impact of peace-building and higher education efforts. Through a dialogue among a Karen scholar, his supervisor, and a migration researcher, we demonstrate that manufactured hope, often driven by external aid, sustains dependency and overlooks core conflicts. In contrast, false hope arises from the gap between student desires and institutional barriers, leading to unmet expectations. We aim to show that by applying critical hope, the pedagogical approach enables the Karen community to enhance its …

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

The first year of college is pivotal for establishing lifelong health habits, yet many Mexican American students experience challenges during this transition. Using data from 285 first-year students at three Hispanic-Serving Institutions in Texas, we performed latent profile analysis (LPA) to explore groups of behavioral and physical health indicators. Four profiles were identified: (1) Moderate Risk Behavior—healthy body composition but high intake of alcohol and fast-food; (2) Multidimensional High Risk—poor sleep, high body fat, and high substance use; (3) Health-Optimal Active—active lifestyle, low-risk behaviors, and good sleep quality; and (4) Physically Inactive but Lean —low activity with lean body composition …

Trade Policy Measures And Quality Infrastructure In The Ecowas: Investigating The Inclusiveness Of The Intra-Regional Agri-Food Trade, Olayinka Idowu Kareem, Christine Wieck Jan 2026

Trade Policy Measures And Quality Infrastructure In The Ecowas: Investigating The Inclusiveness Of The Intra-Regional Agri-Food Trade, Olayinka Idowu Kareem, Christine Wieck

Journal of African Trade

The preponderance and heterogeneous trade policy measures and quality infrastructure deficiency impact agri-food trade inclusiveness in the ECOWAS. Moreover, the inappropriate activities of some border institutions such as harassment (especially for women), graft and different charges made trading along illegal trade corridors inevitable which thereby enhances the nefarious rent-seeking activities. Furthermore, the knowledge frontier in this area is extended with the exploration and exposition of the issue of trade-related quality infrastructure. Hence, this study determines the consequences of the trade policy measures and quality infrastructure on intra-regional agri-food trade inclusiveness in the ECOWAS with a consideration of the impact on …

Energy-Efficient Mixed-Criticality Multicore Systems, Fayyaz Ali, Saud Wasly, Amjad Ali, Shahid Iqbal, Asad Masood Khattak, Bashir Hayat, Shah Khalid

All Works

Balancing energy efficiency with stringent timing guarantees in real-time mixed-criticality systems (MCS) is a key challenge, especially in multicore architectures. This paper introduces a novel energy-aware scheduling framework that integrates dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) with a Decreasing-Criticality-Decreasing-Utilization (DCDU) allocation approach. The optimal operating frequencies are obtained at each criticality level; high-criticality tasks are assigned to cores at full operating frequency to maintain timing guarantees, while low-criticality tasks are allocated using worst-case execution times scaled to their optimal frequency. A fixed-priority response-time analysis is used for schedulability in low mode, high mode, and during mode changes. The extensive simulations …

Low-altitude remote sensing networks are increasingly important for applications, such as environmental monitoring, disaster response, infrastructure inspection, and real-time sensing services. However, when many sensing nodes share limited spectrum resources, severe cochannel interference can degrade communication reliability and delay sensing-data delivery. This challenge becomes more critical in edge-enabled deployments, where control decisions must be made under strict latency, memory, and computational constraints. To address this issue, this article proposes a large language model (LLM)-enhanced edge-aware lightweight reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted dynamic channel allocation (EL-RIS-DCA) framework for interference mitigation in dense low-altitude remote sensing networks. The novelty of the proposed framework …

Lightweight Tinyml-Enhanced Task Offloading In Vanets For Next-Generation Intelligent Transportation Systems, Muhammad Ali, Tariq Qayyum, Asadullah Tariq, Zouheir Trabelsi, Irfan Ud Din, Shabir Ahmed

All Works

Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) face resource constraints, high node mobility, and stringent latency requirements, especially in safety-critical applications such as collision avoidance, path planning, and emergency braking. Task offloading to nearby vehicles or Roadside Units (RSUs) mitigates local computational limits, but dynamic conditions, unreliable nodes, and rapid topology changes complicate dependable node selection. This paper proposes a Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML)-enhanced, credibility-based task offloading framework for real-time decision-making in vehicular networks. RSUs evaluate vehicle reliability through a three-component Credibility Assessment Module: a Task Assignment Component that distributes lightweight test tasks and filters unreliable nodes via TinyML inference; a Verification …
