Lowering Morbidity And Readmissions Of Underserved Preterm Infants To Reduce Acute Care Hospital Spend, Adaugo Amuta Feb 2026

Lowering Morbidity And Readmissions Of Underserved Preterm Infants To Reduce Acute Care Hospital Spend, Adaugo Amuta

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Neonatal readmissions remain a significant challenge in urban acute care hospitals serving indigent preterm infants. These readmissions impose substantial financial burdens, with high-cost conditions such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and retinopathy of prematurity driving recurring expenditures. This integrative review examined strategies that healthcare administrators can implement to reduce neonatal readmissions, improve care equity, and optimize healthcare spending in hospitals serving vulnerable populations in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A comprehensive literature search of empirical and non-empirical studies yielded 105 results for quality assessment using the Johns Hopkins appraisal tools. A total of 29 were included for thematic analysis. Five main …

Mitigating Vicarious Traumatization From Exposure To Human Trafficking For Human Services Professionals, Andrea T. Charles-Alleyne Feb 2026

Mitigating Vicarious Traumatization From Exposure To Human Trafficking For Human Services Professionals, Andrea T. Charles-Alleyne

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Human trafficking is a devastating form of exploitation that not only has detrimental impacts to its victims but also the human services practitioners charged with and committed to their service provision. The secondary impact for professionals is not to be underestimated, as repeated exposure to the traumatic experiences of their clients can potentially lead to physical as well as emotional symptoms such as vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Often, practitioners prioritize the needs of their clients with a relentless focus on advocacy and the overall well-being of those they serve. The purpose of this qualitative action research study was …

Importance: The management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants is controversial.

Objective: To determine whether expectant management compared with active treatment of a protocol-defined PDA in preterm infants decreases the incidence of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD).

Design, setting, and participants: A randomized clinical trial including infants born at 22 to 28 weeks' gestation and diagnosed with a protocol-defined PDA between the age of 48 hours and 21 days at screening. The trial was conducted from December 2018 to December 2024 at 33 hospitals within the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network. The …

Community College Library Digital Branches And Their Communities, Helen Cozart Feb 2026

Community College Library Digital Branches And Their Communities, Helen Cozart

SLIS Connecting

Community Colleges have long been a staple of American life. They offer an affordable education that is transferable to a four-year school or certification in a trade. Since they are in the community, costs can be further lowered by allowing traditional students to live at home and non-traditional students to be with their families and workplaces (Princeton Review, n.d.). Many community colleges actively engage with their communities, encouraging attendance and offering community enrichment programs. Community college libraries can occupy a powerful position in this relationship, creating an environment for the public that is inviting and encouraging through their physical offerings …

When Nutrition Fails: Modeling Protein Malnutrition-Driven Vulnerability In Hepatic Drug Metabolism And Inflammatory Stress, Vijitha D. Kantety, Victor Jiminez Jr. Feb 2026

When Nutrition Fails: Modeling Protein Malnutrition-Driven Vulnerability In Hepatic Drug Metabolism And Inflammatory Stress, Vijitha D. Kantety, Victor Jiminez Jr.

Annual Research Symposium

Background

Protein malnutrition remains a major global health problem and frequently co-occurs with alcohol use, opioid exposure, and infectious disease, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. The liver is central to both metabolism and inflammatory regulation, yet the effects of a malnutrition-like nutrient environment on hepatic responses to combined metabolic and inflammatory insults are not well defined. Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), a key enzyme involved in opioid metabolism, is highly sensitive to inflammatory signaling and may be especially vulnerable under conditions of nutritional deficiency. This project aims to 1) develop an in vitro model of nutritionally competent versus amino acid–restricted …

Could Dietary Zinc Protect Your Gums? Insights From Non-Diabetic Adults, Jacob R. Kelly, Hayden Dehoyos, Man Hung Phd, Amir Mohajeri Phd Feb 2026

Could Dietary Zinc Protect Your Gums? Insights From Non-Diabetic Adults, Jacob R. Kelly, Hayden Dehoyos, Man Hung Phd, Amir Mohajeri Phd

Annual Research Symposium

Background:
Zinc plays an important role in enzymatic and inflammatory processes that may influence periodontal health. The relationship between zinc intake and periodontitis remains insufficiently characterized in adults without diabetes.
Methods:
A population-based adult sample was analyzed to examine the association between zinc intake from dietary and supplemental sources and periodontal disease, adjusting for relevant demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and health-related factors.
Results:
Zinc intake patterns varied across population subgroups and were associated with periodontal outcomes after accounting for potential confounders. Adequate zinc intake was consistently linked to more favorable periodontal status.
Conclusion:
These findings suggest that sufficient zinc intake may …

More Hours, More Work: Head Start Expansions Boost Maternal Employment, Chloe R. Gibbs, Esra Kose, Maria Rosales Rueda Feb 2026

More Hours, More Work: Head Start Expansions Boost Maternal Employment, Chloe R. Gibbs, Esra Kose, Maria Rosales Rueda

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Women’s employment remains highly sensitive to childcare constraints, making childcare availability a critical lever for supporting mothers’ labor force attachment. We study the effects of expanded full-day programming in Head Start, using the 2016 federal funding initiative that targeted grantees with low full-day enrollment. Linking administrative program data, geo-coded center locations, and household data on employment, we estimate a difference-in-differences design by comparing mothers of young children in treated and untreated areas. The policy increased full-day enrollment by 19 percent and raised single mothers’ employment (1.9%), hours (2.5%), and earnings (6.5%). Results show that extending program duration meaningfully improves maternal …

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a very imperative compound for electron transport chain in mitochondria and exerts its effects as cutaneous antioxidant. All human cells have CoQ10, and sometime deficiency had been identified due to genetic defects or with ageing. Supplements with COQ 10 are commonly used enteral and dermal application for the prevention and treatment of aging. Delivery of dermal CoQ10 is very limited due to its poor penetration and unstable compounds. systematic review was conducted by our research group through electronic databases using preclinical and randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and stability of improved delivery systems of …

The comparison of antioxidant activities between non-boiled and boiled aqueous extracts of selected vegetables from the Brassica oleracea L. species is an interesting study topic, particularly in a context like Sri Lanka, where traditional and modern medicinal practices often emphasize the role of dietary plants in health. Hence, this was aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of boiled and non-boiled aqueous extracts (BAE and NBAE respectively) of selected vegetables belonging to the Brassica oleracea L species, which are commonly consumed as a raw vegetable in fresh salads as well as a cooked vegetable in curry or fried form i.e. Brassica …
