Freeze-Dried, Not Frozen: Lyophilized Mesenchymal Stromal Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles And Therapeutic Function In Neuroinflammatory Models, Janet R Ashley, Aidan M Collier, Scott D Olson, Charles S Cox
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC)-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) offer a promising acellular therapy for immune modulation, but clinical translation is hindered by variability and storage constraints. Lyophilization (freeze-drying) could enable shelf-stable EV therapeutics, although its effects on biological activity remain incompletely defined.
Study design: We compared the immunomodulatory effects of frozen and lyophilized EVs from bone marrow (BM), adipose tissue (AD), and umbilical cord (UC) MSCs using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated rodent splenocytes and microglial models and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Variables included batch scale (small vs large), cytokine priming, and MSC source. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) secretion was measured …

Enhancing Monitoring In Protected Areas: Evaluating Mobile Apps As A Tourism Proxy, Jorge Costa, Alberto Gomes, Martin Stokes, Miguel Saraiva
Enhancing Monitoring In Protected Areas: Evaluating Mobile Apps As A Tourism Proxy, Jorge Costa, Alberto Gomes, Martin Stokes, Miguel Saraiva
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Crowdsourced data, such as that from mobile fitness apps (MFAs), has the potential to transform tourism research. This opportunity is particularly valuable as tourism to protected areas (PAs) increases, making it more difficult to manage their environmental impacts. However, such data sources come with challenges. Therefore, their representativeness should be carefully evaluated, particularly as their use continues to grow. We use the Paiva Walkways (Portugal) to assess MFAs as a tourism proxy using Spearman’s rank correlation, to evaluate kernel density and fishnet methods for spatialising visitor movements, and to analyse the visitors’ spatiotemporal behaviour using GIS, kernel density estimation, and …

All Life As Witness: Developing A Mode Of Investigation Into Political Disappearance In 1960s Venezuela Reframed By Skinner Releasing Technique And Indigenous Knowledge, Livia Daza-Paris
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This practice-based research develops Ecologies of Poetic Forensics, an investigative mode for approaching political disappearance as a felt, ongoing condition that also reverberates across worlds beyond the human. Focused on my father's disappearance during Venezuela's 1960s revolutionary movement, the research follows relational dynamics within the personal, political, ecological ‘many worlds’ (Indígena Zapatistas 1996) shaped by state violence, including those of campesinos (land-based workers) in Cocorote, Lara State. The inquiry unfolds across Venezuela, Canada, and the United States, tracing territory that exceeds state borders.
The research brings the Skinner Releasing Technique, a movement practice oriented by poetic imagery and embodied …
The Persistent Shock Of The Old: Making The Case For The Responsive Development Of Artwork Deploying Historical Museological Display Techniques., Duncan Cameron
The Persistent Shock Of The Old: Making The Case For The Responsive Development Of Artwork Deploying Historical Museological Display Techniques., Duncan Cameron
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
My sculpture work and thesis investigate the potential of historical museological practices—particularly Victorian and Edwardian display technologies—in contemporary art-making and sculptural practice. I ask three central questions: how can the collection and display of natural history materials be ethically defended in the present day; how might traditional exhibition orthodoxies be reconfigured to privilege the prosaic, domestic, and handmade over the novel and precious; and what role does the idiosyncratic and beautiful play in narrating material stories within an ethical, Anthropocene-aware framework? The study employs a practice-led methodology combining iterative art-making, critical reflection, and active fieldwork. Working from a studio in Somerset, …
Planetarity And Relation: Ecology As Method, Ashish Ghadiali
Planetarity And Relation: Ecology As Method, Ashish Ghadiali
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
The List of Works submitted comprises research through film, text, exhibition, performance and policy engagement, developed during a three-year period from 2021 to 2024 in the site-specific location of Southwest England. This multi-modal and interdisciplinary practice is framed in response to the question of how art and cultural strategy can, in the contexts of climate breakdown and global racial inequity, be conceived of as agency for environmental justice. In this integrative summary, I present a theoretical framework where ecology, in response to conditions of environmental crisis, is understood not only as a subject of inquiry but also as method. In …
The Influence Of Historical Technological Constraints On Contemporary Music Practice, Clive Mead
The Influence Of Historical Technological Constraints On Contemporary Music Practice, Clive Mead
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This practice-based research project explores the creative implications of working within historically constrained music production environments. By composing and producing original music using only emulated instruments, effects, and recording technologies from four key eras—1955, 1965, 1975, and 1985—the study examines how technological limitations affect contemporary compositional practice. The project is situated at the intersection of music production, creative practice research, and is conducted by a composer-producer with extensive experience across diverse musical genres. The research addresses three central questions: What occurs when a proficient modern producer is restricted to using tools from earlier periods of recorded music history? In what ways …
An Investigation Of The Perceived Effects Of, And Preparedness For, Climate Change On Tourism Stakeholders In The North Devon Unesco Biosphere, Mai Albaek
Plymouth Business School Theses
This thesis investigates the perceived effects of climate change and the level of preparedness among tourism stakeholders and local residents in the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere (NDUB), a protected area in southwest England. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study draws on quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with residents, tourism-related business owners, and industry professionals to explore how climate change is understood, experienced, and addressed at the local level. The research is underpinned by stakeholder theory and collaboration theory, which are operationalised to examine the dynamics of climate perception, adaptation, and collective action. Findings reveal that while concern about climate change …
Examining The Nexus Between Social Capital, Value Co-Creation And Entrepreneurship In Nigeria: Assessing The Moderating Role Of Social Media In A Resource-Constrained Context, Ben Omoruyi
Plymouth Business School Theses
This research provides a transformative perspective on how Social Capital (SC), Value Co creation (VCC), and Social Media (SM) interact to shape Entrepreneurial Outcomes (EOs) in institutionally weak, resource-constrained contexts. Positioned within a positivist ontology and grounded in Social Capital Theory, the research reconceptualises SC not as a passive stock of relationships but as a dynamic entrepreneurial capability, strategically mobilised to access resources, legitimacy, and opportunities. Focusing on Nigeria’s fashion industry, a sector characterised by informality, weak institutions, and heavy network reliance, the study adopts a quantitative, deductive design. Data from a cross-sectional survey of 580 entrepreneurs aged 18–55, in …
Driving Venture Success: A Collaborative Framework For The Consumer Goods Industry, Mohammad Alhusaeini Mohammad
Driving Venture Success: A Collaborative Framework For The Consumer Goods Industry, Mohammad Alhusaeini Mohammad
Plymouth Business School Theses
This thesis addresses the persistent gap between the strategic promise of external corporate venturing (ECV) and its frequently disappointing outcomes in the global consumer goods industry, with a specific focus on the non-durable consumer goods sub‑sector. Despite ECV’s recognised importance for innovation—particularly in a sector characterised by rapid consumer preference shifts, tight margins, and complex supply chains—collaborations with external start-ups are often undermined by cultural misalignment, strategic ambiguity, and ineffective performance measurement. Through an abductive, mixed-methods research design within an interpretivist paradigm—integrating archival analysis, six in-depth corporate case studies (P&G, PepsiCo, Unilever, Danone, Henkel, and L’Oréal), and 32 interviews with …

Visual And Rhetorical Analysis Practices In The Sociology Classroom: A Focus On “Zombie” And Derry Girls, Kate Antosik-Parsons, Ann Johnson, Danielle Nielsen, Diane Sabenacio Nititham
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
The purpose of this article is to provide a lesson that uses readily available and relatable popular media to address contemporary social issues and ongoing global concerns. Using sociological theories and rhetorical analysis, our three-day activity, “Public Art, Place, and Global Conflict” introduced students to The Troubles, the ethno-national conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted from the late 1960s to 1998. We taught visual media analysis to identify multidimensional social dynamics in the protest song and music video “Zombie” by Irish band The Cranberries (1996), and two episodes of the TV show Derry Girls (2018-2022), a teen sitcom by Lisa …
Exposing The Work Of The Market Through The Case Of Alternative Provision For English School Students, Nick Pratt, Elizabeth Done, Sam Morahan
Exposing The Work Of The Market Through The Case Of Alternative Provision For English School Students, Nick Pratt, Elizabeth Done, Sam Morahan
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
Pupils in England who for some reason are not able to attend school often find themselves in Alternative Provision (AP). These are special arrangements designed to address their specific needs and help them return to mainstream schooling. AP involves a financial agreement between the provider and the organisation that commissions the provision and thus operates as an explicit form of education market in which educational services are traded directly for financial recompense. We report on a case study of one AP provider in the South-West of England undertaken over a one-year period which generated data through individual, semi-structured interviews and …

Microplastics, Nanoplastics And Liver Disease: An Emerging Health Concern?, Shilpa Chokshi, Ashwin Dhanda, Matthew E. Cramp, Richard Thompson
Peninsula Medical School
Human liver tissue has been found to contain microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs), with evidence that hepatic MNP accumulation has markedly increased over the past 10 years, prompting critical questions regarding their potential causal role in liver disease. In cell-based and murine models, MNP exposure can trigger oxidative stress, fibrogenesis and inflammation, pathological features that resemble those of advanced liver disease, suggesting shared mechanistic pathways. Furthermore, the capacity for MNPs to act as vectors for microbial pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, endocrine-disrupting chemicals and carcinogenic additives might have important implications for liver pathology. This Perspective examines emerging evidence on the consequences of MNPs …

Peninsula Medical School
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling anxiety disorder precipitated by severe trauma. Many people with this condition have little access to clinical interventions, especially in low-middle-income countries. For the development of any digital health intervention, it is vital to know the opinions of PLE and clinicians to guide the developers. We conducted two focus groups, one with clinicians (n = 5) and one with people with lived experience (PLE) (n = 11), to gain knowledge of their views on the development of a PTSD App. Transcripts of both focus groups were coded and thematically analysed. The key themes that …

Survival Of Listeria Monocytogenes And Salmonella Typhimurium In Pepperoni With Reduced Salt And Sodium Nitrite Levels, And Sublethal Thermal Treatments, Shannon Heapes, Victoria Caballero, Jesus Frias, Bradley Afanda, Martin Danaher, Joseph P. Kerry, Geraldine Duffy
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
There is increasing pressure to reduce sodium nitrite and salt levels in processed and fermented meats in response to consumer demands and updated legislation. However, such reductions may impact pathogen control. In this study, the survival of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium was evaluated in pepperoni produced with reduced salt and sodium nitrite levels, with or without an enhanced postfermentation thermal treatment. Pepperoni batters with formulations varying in sodium nitrite (50–150 ppm) and salt (1.4%–2.5%), were inoculated with cocktails of L. monocytogenes or S. Typhimurium (~log10 4–6 CFU g−1), subjected to a postfermentation thermal treatment (53.5°C × …

Synthesising Cross-Speaker Data For Low-Resource Pathological Speech Recognition With Peft, Kesego Mokgosi, Milad Dadgar, Cathy Ennis, Robert Ross
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Dysarthric speech recognition is essential for enhancing communication and accessibility for individuals with speech impairments, yet its development is hindered by a scarcity of robust, speaker-specific datasets. This study explores low-resource dysarthric speech recognition through cross-speaker transfer using synthetic data and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT). We integrate SpeechT5 text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis with x-vector speaker embeddings to generate speaker-specific dysarthric speech, enabling model adaptation while preserving pathological speech characteristics such as prosodic irregularities. Experiments on the TORGO dataset show that mixed cross-synthetic data with LoRA fine-tuning achieves a WER of 0.17, representing a 71.7% improvement over the standard model (0.60 WER) without …

Research Outputs: 2025-Present
The effectiveness of supervised machine learning models is heavily influenced by the quality of training data, which is often shaped by human annotators. Subjective NLP tasks such as hate speech detection, toxicity identification, and sexism classification frequently exhibit annotator disagreement due to differences in individual perspectives. This study investigates annotator disagreement in sexism detection using English tweets from the EXIST 2023 competition. To systematically analyse disagreement, tweets are categorised based on annotator consensus levels, examining how annotator demographics and linguistic features contribute to labelling inconsistencies. We interpret disagreement patterns using Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) and assess the consistency of SHAP-derived …

Phishing remains one of the most persistent cybersecurity threats, exploiting human trust to steal sensitive information through deceptive websites. Traditional detection methods, reliant on blacklists and reactive reporting, offer limited protection against rapidly evolving zero-day attacks. To address these challenges, this study proposes and evaluates a hybrid browser-resident phishing detection framework that combines three complementary detection mechanisms: a locally executed Random Forest model using URL lexical features, lightweight real-time DOM structure analysis, and VirusTotal’s multi-engine reputation service. Communication between the client and server is optimised using gRPC over the QUIC protocol, ensuring secure, high-performance data exchange with built-in retry mechanisms …

Video-Dprp: A Differentially Private Approach For Visual Privacy-Preserving Video Human Activity Recognition, Allassan Tchangmena A. Nken, Susan Mckeever, Peter Corcoran, Ihsan Ullah
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Considerable effort has been made in privacy-preserving video human activity recognition (HAR). Two primary approaches to ensure privacy preservation in Video HAR are differential privacy (DP) and visual privacy. Techniques enforcing DP during training provide strong theoretical privacy guarantees but offer limited capabilities for visual privacy assessment. Conversely, methods such as low-resolution transformations, data obfuscation and adversarial networks, emphasize visual privacy but lack clear theoretical privacy assurances. In this work, we focus on two main objectives: (1) leveraging DP properties to develop a model-free approach for visual privacy in videos and (2) evaluating our proposed technique using both differential privacy …

Background. Sporothrix brasiliensis is the principal etiological agent responsible for cat-transmitted zoonotic sporotrichosis, which is currently the most prevalent mycosis in South America—especially in Brazil—and is increasingly being reported in other regions. While itraconazole is the standard treatment, its use is limited by hepatotoxicity, high cost, and emerging reports of reduced susceptibility. Complexes of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione (phendione) with transition metals have previously shown promise as antifungal agents against bacteria, parasites, yeasts and filamentous fungi. This study investigates the in vitro and in vivo antifungal properties of [Cu(phendione)3](ClO4)2.4H2O (Cu-phendione) and [Ag(phendione)2]ClO4 (Ag-phendione) against S. brasiliensis isolates from domestic felines in endemic regions. …
