01.01.07. Black Swan, Cygnus Atratus, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
Black Swans are native to Australia and Tasmania. Typically, they are found along inland waterways, rivers, sewage ponds, and coastal lagoons and inlets, and sometimes flocks together in enormous numbers on large wetlands. Frequent in waterfowl collections in domesticated settings, they now occur in Japan, eastern China, more densely in Europe and Iceland, and commonly in scattered urban centers in the USA.

01.01.12. Blue-Winged Teal, Spatula Discors, Z. B. Holmes, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
The expansive breeding range of Blue-Winged Teal stretches from the Canadian Arctic to northern Texas while, in the eastern United States, their non-breeding winter range extends from Florida and continues south throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. In the United States, the highest winter densities occur in southern Texas and peninsular Florida in early January, but teal are present in Florida throughout the year.

01.01.17. Hooded Merganser, Lophodytes Cucullatus, B. H. Anderson, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
“Hoodie” is not only a nickname given to a hooded sweatshirt, but to the exquisitely patterned Hooded Merganser by hunters and birders, alike. Mainly piscivores, mergansers differ from most other ducks by having a long, rather narrow bill, serrated along the edges to firmly secure the prey they capture while diving.

01.01.16. Ring-Necked Duck, Aythya Collaris, K. M. Mcbride, A. Auger, A. T. Fanning, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
The Ring-necked Duck is a small to medium-sized diving duck with distinctive white bill markings and a short crest that gives its head an angular profile. The species is native to North America, but sightings outside of the continent are increasingly common. Migratory throughout its range, this duck nests at generally low densities in subarctic deltas, taiga, boreal forest, aspen parkland and, to a lesser extent, prairie regions.

01.01.18. Ruddy Duck, Oxyura Jamaicensis, C. Chancy, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
The Ruddy Duck can be distinguished from most North American ducks by its unique plumage and stature. This stocky, still-tailed duck breeds in the southwest and southern interior of Canada and extends its breeding range into the Lower 48 to southern California, across the northern southwest, and up through Nebraska, the Dakotas, and the western half of Minnesota.
01.01.10. Wood Duck, Aix Sponsa, Z. B. Holmes, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01.10. Wood Duck, Aix Sponsa, Z. B. Holmes, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
01.01: <i>Anatidae</i> - Ducks, Geese, and Waterfowl
In the early 1900s, wood ducks were threatened with extinction due to overhunting and loss of habitat, however, protections beginning in 1918 with the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act coupled with management plans saved this species from extinction. Wood Ducks breed throughout the United States and into southern Canada, predominantly following freshwater sources bordered by shrubby or forested swamps.

Journal of the American College of Dentists
Dentists are increasingly expected to serve as leaders within clinical teams, healthcare systems, organized dentistry, and their communities. Despite this expectation, leadership training remains inconsistent in predoctoral dental education. National data suggest that only 24% of practicing dentists feel adequately prepared for leadership roles in practice through their dental education, with even fewer reporting preparedness at broader organizational or systemic levels. Although CODA Standards 2-19 and 2-20 require demonstrated leadership competency, implementation across dental schools remains highly variable. A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and institutional reports to identify implemented leadership education initiatives in US dental …

Should Predoctoral Dental Students Provide Dental Treatment For Their Own Children?, S.M. Hashim Nainar Bds, Mdsc
Journal of the American College of Dentists
The best interest standard is a foundational ethical principle in pediatric ethics for making healthcare decisions for children. It positions a child’s interests as central in clinical decision-making, setting aside the historical notion that children are chattel or property under the unlimited authority of their parents. This paper explores ethical issues related to predoctoral dental students providing dental treatment to their own children, using a case vignette with a negative outcome. Through this scenario, this article explores the ethical issues surrounding dental students providing care to their own children.
The Ethics Of Dental Insurance Submission And Adjudication, Robert Rosenthal Dds
The Ethics Of Dental Insurance Submission And Adjudication, Robert Rosenthal Dds
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Dental insurance claims sit at the intersection of professional ethics, contract administration, and regulatory oversight. This article argues that claim submission and payer adjudication should be treated as ethical practices grounded in truthfulness, fair use of shared resources, and respect for patient autonomy. Common failure modes range from misunderstandings of benefit provisions to intentional misrepresentations of diagnosis, procedure coding, dates of service, or supporting narratives. Because payer communications and attachments become part of the claim file, inaccuracies may create downstream harm, including patient financial confusion, audit exposure, recoupment, network consequences, and professional discipline. This article offers practical guidance to help …

Healthcare professionals commonly prioritize patients’ well-being over their own. In settings where stressful situations are common, combined with the pressures of modern-day society, this can lead to chronic stress and burnout. When one experiences burnout, their ability to perform at an optimum level is impaired. This affects the team around them and the care patients receive, making mistakes more likely. It is therefore essential to recognize the early signs of burnout and address them before the situation deteriorates. Better still, preventing burnout by prioritizing oneself fosters a happier work environment, strengthens leadership, and ultimately helps patients receive better care.

Digitalisation In The Voluntary Sector: An Empirical Study On The Determinants Of It Acceptance, Deniz Dogu
Digitalisation In The Voluntary Sector: An Empirical Study On The Determinants Of It Acceptance, Deniz Dogu
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
Digitalisation represents a major societal trend that drives economic and social trans-formation by increasingly embedding digital information and communication techno-logies (ICT) into processes, interactions, and everyday activities across all domains of life. However, the voluntary sector has yet to fully embrace ICT. The extent to which volunteers integrate digital tools depends on factors such as technical infrastructure and willingness to adopt IT. Research in this area remains limited, and findings are often difficult to transfer across different national contexts. This PhD research addresses the gap in understanding IT acceptance in volunteering, using Germany as a case study. A comprehensive literature …

Objectives: Many university students experience high anxiety but have limited access to effective interventions. We evaluated a novel digital intervention for anxiety based on functional imagery training (FIT), designed to help individuals identify the impacts of anxiety, set engagement goals, and strengthen motivation for change. Functional Imagery for Keeping Anxiety low (FIKA) uses speak-aloud tasks, journalling, empathic questions, and personalised guided imagery for a person-centred approach. It builds motivation for engagement goals over safety goals through development and practice of vivid and emotionally laden multisensory imagery. Design: Study 1 used semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to explore user experiences of …
Dampened Social Motivation In Dysphoria: The Role Of Negative Social Expectancies And Internal Causal Attribution Style, Julie L Ji, Nilly Mor, Colin Macleod
Dampened Social Motivation In Dysphoria: The Role Of Negative Social Expectancies And Internal Causal Attribution Style, Julie L Ji, Nilly Mor, Colin Macleod
School of Psychology
Dysphoria is associated with dampening of social interaction intention, but the cognitive mechanisms that underpin this relationship are under-investigated. This study tested the hypothesis that heightened negative social expectancies mediate the association between dysphoria and dampened social motivation. Additionally, it tested the hypothesis that the association between dysphoria and negative social expectancies is mediated by an attribution style bias that attributes negative, but not positive, outcomes to internal causes. University students (N = 271) with varied levels of dysphoria read vignettes describing hypothetical situations where they initiate a social interaction that results in positive or negative outcomes. Participants rated their …

“The True Me”: Unravelling The Dual Narrative Of Borderline Personality Disorder And Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Robin Iliffe-Lewis, Alison Bacon
School of Psychology
Objectives: There is growing recognition that some individuals who receive a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are later diagnosed with autism. However, existing literature on this topic remains limited. This study aimed to explore the experiences of individuals diagnosed with BPD prior to autism, how they made sense of these diagnoses, navigated clinical systems, and learnt to manage the complex challenges associated with this diagnostic sequence. Methods: Thirteen (6 male, 6 female, 1 non-binary) adult participants took part in semi-structured interviews exploring their diagnostic journeys. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to develop a nuanced understanding of their experiences. Results: Three themes …

The idea that merely viewing nature can promote stress recovery has profound societal implications, driving the use of nature imagery in the design of environments where access to real nature is limited. Scientific support for this concept originates from a pioneering study by Ulrich et al. (1991), which demonstrated superior psycho-physiological stress recovery during exposure to nature videos compared to urban videos. Despite its influence, this foundational study has never been systematically replicated. To address this gap, ten research teams across the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Sweden, and the USA collaborated on a multisite replication. A final sample of 959 …
Picturing The Past: The Role Of Photo Cue Visual Perspective On Positive Autobiographical Memory Recall In Dysphoria, Sarah Snow, Zachary Adolph Niese, Julie L Ji
Picturing The Past: The Role Of Photo Cue Visual Perspective On Positive Autobiographical Memory Recall In Dysphoria, Sarah Snow, Zachary Adolph Niese, Julie L Ji
School of Psychology
Positive autobiographical memory plays a key role in emotional well-being and is distorted by cognitive processing biases in dysphoria. This experiment investigated how the visual perspectives (first-person vs. third-person) of personal photographs influence recall of positive memories depending on dysphoria. Eighty-five participants (42 low dysphoria, 43 high dysphoria) submitted photos of positive events from both perspectives. Later, participants recalled these events while viewing either a first- or third-person photo before rating and describing their memory. While first-person photos promoted more recall from an own-eyes vantage point regardless of dysphoria level, dysphoria was still associated with greater observer-like recall, reduced mental …

Post-Divorce Lgbtq-Parent Families: Navigating Loyalty Conflicts And Stepfamily Closeting, Caroline Sanner, Abbie E. Goldberg, Katherine R. Allen
Psychology
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate underexplored dynamics of post-divorce LGBTQ-parent families.
Background: In LGBTQ-parent families in which children were conceived in the context of a prior different-gender partnership, children experience the coinciding events of parental separation and a parent's coming out as LGBTQ. In recent decades, research on LGBTQ-parent families formed following different-gender divorce has stalled, perhaps due to the increasing emphasis on planned LGBTQ-parent families, or families formed after parents have come out.
Method: Twenty-four adults who were born to different-gender married parents (i.e., mother/father families) who divorced when one parent came out as LGBTQ …
Living With Generative Ai: Considering Constructionist Approaches To Learning And Methodological Implications Of Process Ontologies, Jimin Lee, Nancy Budwig
Living With Generative Ai: Considering Constructionist Approaches To Learning And Methodological Implications Of Process Ontologies, Jimin Lee, Nancy Budwig
Psychology
The growing presence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in educational practice raises questions about how learners and educators live with AI and reshapes questions about how learning unfolds across contemporary learning environments. Although research on AI in education has expanded quickly, much of this work continues to frame GenAI in technocentric and static terms, as a tool to be evaluated, rather than as a relational and developmental presence within learners' trajectories. Drawing on constructionist learning theory and post-Cartesian metatheoretical perspectives, this mini review suggests that such framings are insufficient for understanding how learning is enacted in AI-mediated contexts. We propose …

Seeing Anxiety: Ecological Video Ethnography And Simulation To Understand Anxiety And Decision-Making In Dental Care, Mona Nasser, Hannah Drayson, Sally Hanks, Nicholas Peres, Michael Punt
Peninsula Dental School
BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety is a widespread barrier to care, often contributing to appointment avoidance, treatment disruption, and emotional strain for both patients and clinicians. While extensively studied as a psychological trait, less attention has been paid to how anxiety manifests situationally and relationally, through non-verbal, affective, and spatial cues within clinical encounters. Moreover, in certain contexts, such affective signals can intersect with decision-making processes, shaping how patients interpret, engage with, or withdraw from clinical choices.
OBJECTIVE: To explore how anxiety manifests within the micro-choreography of dental encounters, develop a taxonomy of 'anxious tells', and assess the utility of ecological video …
