The Unspoken Workweek: Understanding The Impact Of Menstruation On Work Experiences, Cherie Kuriakose Jan 2026

The Unspoken Workweek: Understanding The Impact Of Menstruation On Work Experiences, Cherie Kuriakose

Psychology Theses

Menstruation remains an underrecognized factor in workplace well-being, despite affecting a large portion of the workforce. Existing research shows significant gaps in understanding employees’ lived experiences and organizational responses. This qualitative study aims to explore how menstruation influences work life, productivity, and perceptions of support within U.S. workplaces. Thirty menstruating employees were recruited using convenience and purposive sampling to participate in semi-structured virtual interviews, and data were analyzed thematically, guided by grounded theory principles. Findings revealed three central themes: (a) stigma and non-disclosure, shaped by internalized norms and workplace culture; (b) invisible effort and struggles that impact work, including productivity, …

Data-Driven Prediction Of Concrete Bridge Deck Corrosion Using Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Nafisa Shafiullah Jan 2026

Data-Driven Prediction Of Concrete Bridge Deck Corrosion Using Ground Penetrating Radar (Gpr), Nafisa Shafiullah

Civil Engineering Theses

Corrosion detection remains a crucial factor in the proper maintenance of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures. While several studies have used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for corrosion detection, quantitative models for prediction are still limited. This study presents an approach for the quantitative prediction of rebar corrosion in concrete using GPR data obtained from a prior experimental program involving accelerated corrosion. A total of 36 RC samples were cast, varying in cover depth, rebar diameter, and concrete porosity. The samples were subjected to an impressed current of 0.65 A in a 5% NaCl solution over three phases: 10, 20, and 30 …

The Evolution Of News Language In The Digital Age: A Comparative Analysis Of 1996-97 And 2023-24, Keenan Wallace Jan 2026

The Evolution Of News Language In The Digital Age: A Comparative Analysis Of 1996-97 And 2023-24, Keenan Wallace

Theses & ETDs

This paper examines linguistic changes in mainstream written news media in the United States. We compare subjectivity, formality, lexical diversity, and reading complexity from 1996- 97 to 2023-24 across five local and national news publications; the New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Hartford Courant, and Chicago Tribune, to determine if there has been a shift towards simpler, more subjective, and less formal language in accordance with the familiarization and potential preference of the audience to shorter, more casual forms of news media prevailing online. We use comparative tests, linear models, and linear mixed models to examine changes in the …

Capacity-Building Project To Progress The Implementation Of International Instruments To Combat Iuu Fishing (Capfish) : Summer Academy: West Africa, World Maritime University, Korea Maritime Institute, Ministry Of Oceans And Fisheries

Reports

The CAPFISH Project was created in response to an identified need for capacity-building to address illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and related matters - a complex problem affecting aquatic ecosystems, coastal communities, fishers and fish workers, and economic and national security. Over the last five years, the CAPFISH Project has provided training and educational materials on IUU fishing to developing country administrations around the world, most recently with a two-week regional Summer Academy for West Africa. This Academy ran for two weeks and included delegates from fisheries, maritime and enforcement agencies, industry, maritime training institutions, regional fisheries bodies, and …

Restoring The Organization For The Security And Cooperation In Europe’S Role In Human Rights And Security After Russian Invasion, Roman Nekoliak Jan 2026

Restoring The Organization For The Security And Cooperation In Europe’S Role In Human Rights And Security After Russian Invasion, Roman Nekoliak

Human Rights Brief

This Article diagnoses a systemic erosion of rights-based multilateralism driven by geopolitical realignment, reduced leadership by traditional human rights defenders, the rise of authoritarian coalitions, and the growth of transactional and securitized diplomacy. This Article argues that revitalizing the Organization for the Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) around a rights-centered, cross-dimensional concept of security is essential to restoring both regional stability and the credibility of international human rights commitments. It places the war in Ukraine within broader patterns of democratic backsliding, institutional paralysis, and the rise of authoritarian governance, demonstrating how domestic repression and interstate aggression mutually reinforce one …

The Kids Are Alright: A Preliminary Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of A Microaggression Training Series For Adolescents, Brea M. Banks, Bianca Sierra, Khyati Verma, Giselle Rivera Jan 2026

The Kids Are Alright: A Preliminary Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of A Microaggression Training Series For Adolescents, Brea M. Banks, Bianca Sierra, Khyati Verma, Giselle Rivera

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Microaggressions are identity-based indignities that lead to significant negative consequences for receivers. Although most research has focused on the microaggressive experiences of adults, adolescents experience these transgressions in schools, and they find these experiences offensive. As such, preparing high school students to address microaggressions when they receive or witness them and to respond appropriately when they receive feedback about their microaggressive behaviour is imperative. Using a quasi-experimental design, we conducted a preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of a microintervention training for adolescents at a high school in the Midwestern United States. The intervention was effective in producing improvement in assessed …

Bridging The Divide Between Scholarly And Popular Leadership Writing, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin Jan 2026

Bridging The Divide Between Scholarly And Popular Leadership Writing, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin

Faculty Publications – Management

Leadership writing occupies a space between theoretical complexity and the human desire for practical insight. While popular leadership books often achieve wide resonance without scholarly rigor, academic journal articles frequently achieve rigor without broader relevance. Our article offers reasons for this bifurcation and suggests the use of the hermeneutic circle as a frame to interpret popular leadership texts not as threats to academic credibility, but as opportunities for reflection and reorientation. Through the hermeneutic circle, the relationship between scholarly and popular texts is conceptualized as recursive interplay between parts (e.g., rigor, audience) and wholes (e.g., influence, disciplinary norms). Rather than …

The research identifies key themes and trends, highlighting the evolving academic landscape of LGBTQ+ fashion studies. By examining studies from a range of academic databases, we categorize the literature by theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and geographic contexts. Overall, most articles focused on negotiating identity via clothing of a variety of identities …

The Supreme Court And Public Law In 2023, Kate Glover Berger Jan 2026

The Supreme Court And Public Law In 2023, Kate Glover Berger

The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This article discusses the Supreme Court of Canada’s public law judgments in 2023. It was the basis for the opening address at the 27th Annual Osgoode Hall Law School Constitutional Cases Conference. In the Conference’s tradition, this annual review is divided into two parts. The first part (Part II of the article, following Part I: Introduction) presents institutional and quantitative data about the Court’s work in 2023. It focuses on the composition of the Court, the historically low number of judgments released in 2023, rates of agreement and dissent, and the dominance of public law on the Court’s docket in …

A New Justification For Section 12 Hypotheticals Andtwo Rules For Constructing Them, Lisa Kerr, Michael Perlin Jan 2026

A New Justification For Section 12 Hypotheticals Andtwo Rules For Constructing Them, Lisa Kerr, Michael Perlin

The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The use of the reasonable hypothetical device in the section 12 context has been a source of unceasing controversy. The Supreme Court has tried to lay the debate to rest; but we argue that there are convincing and practical reasons for the use of hypotheticals which the Court could do more to explain, as a way to persuade skeptics. These reasons are tied to the realities of the criminal justice system and how mandatory penalties can shape penal outcomes in covert ways, apart from, and in addition to, delivering cruel and unusual punishment to individuals. Along with articulating this new …

Prescribing Plenary Powers:The Evolution And Intersection Of Criminal Andhealth Jurisdiction In Canadian Federalism, Benjamin Perryman Jan 2026

Prescribing Plenary Powers:The Evolution And Intersection Of Criminal Andhealth Jurisdiction In Canadian Federalism, Benjamin Perryman

The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Using the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision in Murray-Hall v. Québec (Attorney General) as a focal point, this paper tracks the evolution and intersection of the federal criminal law power and the provincial health law power in Canadian federalism cases. Part II of the paper examines existing methods used to prescribe plenary powers, including interpretative narrowing (formalism), expansion of concurrent federalism (double aspect), and purpose review (colourability). The paper shows that the Supreme Court of Canada has applied these prescriptions to the federal criminal law power but rarely to the provincial health law power. Part III looks around the …

Understanding Public Support For Courts In Canada, Erin Crandall, Andrea Lawlor Jan 2026

Understanding Public Support For Courts In Canada, Erin Crandall, Andrea Lawlor

The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Do Canadian citizens support their courts, and what factors influence that support? While it is well recognized that public confidence in the judicial branch is crucial for its effective functioning, how to measure and analyze this confidence is debated. This article explores how social scientists conceptualize and study trust and perceptions of legitimacy in courts. Using data from the Canada Election Studies spanning 2008 to 2021 and an original survey conducted in 2023, this article provides an overview of the current state of trust in Canadian courts, the known correlates of confidence, and recommendations for maintaining public support. We find …

Cryoablation To Treat Cancer Utilizing Computed Tomography Guidance, Mia D. Ruckle Jan 2026

Cryoablation To Treat Cancer Utilizing Computed Tomography Guidance, Mia D. Ruckle

Student Research Poster Presentations 2026

This research examines the effectiveness of cryoablation, a minimally invasive treatment for tumor destruction. Cryoablation works by using freezing temperatures to the targeted tissues, leading to cell damage and eventually cell death. It is being utilized more frequently to treat various cancers, such as: liver, lung, breast, renal, and prostate. This research analyzes current literature and experimental findings to evaluate how cryoablation contributes to improved treatment outcomes and reduced damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Cryoablation offers several advantages over traditional treatment options including, reduced recovery time, lower complication rates, and the ability to precisely target tumors. Imaging guidance through computed …

Teacher's Use Of Google Classroom, David Hodgin Jan 2026

Teacher's Use Of Google Classroom, David Hodgin

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the teachers’ use of features in Google Classroom and the factors influencing their integration, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the theoretical framework. Learning management systems like Google Classroom are commonplace in modern classrooms. A significant gap remains in understanding whether educators move beyond basic administrative functions to use features that support higher-order pedagogical goals, such as collaboration and differentiation. This study used a quantitative-based survey that sampled pre-pandemic K-12 educators, which examined external variables such as demographic, professional, training, and technology use, along with TAM constructs – perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influence, …

Symbolic Reform Or Substantive Change? The Effect Of Body-Worn Camera Implementation On Lethal Use-Of-Force In Missouri, Sophia A. Tuncer Jan 2026

Symbolic Reform Or Substantive Change? The Effect Of Body-Worn Camera Implementation On Lethal Use-Of-Force In Missouri, Sophia A. Tuncer

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigates whether body-worn cameras reduce lethal use-of-force among police departments in Missouri. Aggregating data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and Mapping Police Violence, I create a panel of 188 cities in Missouri, with and without body-worn camera adoption. The OLS and Poisson regression results show that body-worn cameras do not have a significant effect on lethal use-of-force in the short run, but that the technology does significantly lower lethal use-of-force in the medium run.

Modeling Taiwanese Monetary Policy: Augmented Taylor And Mccallum Rules, Yu-Chi (Yunnie) Cheng Jan 2026

Modeling Taiwanese Monetary Policy: Augmented Taylor And Mccallum Rules, Yu-Chi (Yunnie) Cheng

CMC Senior Theses

This study examines how price-based and quantity-based monetary frameworks explain the policy actions of the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) within the context of a trade-dependent, small open economy. Utilizing a comparative empirical analysis of Taylor and McCallum rules from 2000 to 2025, the research finds that Taylor rule’s superior fit is contingent upon the inclusion of the augmented variables, such as federal funds rate, Financial Stress Index, and sovereign credit premiums, revealing a policy stance that is deeply reactive to international financial conditions. In contrast, the McCallum rule demonstrates remarkable parsimony, explaining 45% of the variance …

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard Jan 2026

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard

Books and Book Chapters

This article examines Ramadan Hardcore, a graphic novel by Hicham Habchi and Mehdi Yassire, through a visual and contextual analysis. It explores how the novel’s raw illustrative style reinforces its title and narrative, creating a powerful emotional impact while presenting an authentic, and at times deliberately exaggerated, representation of reality. Using visual semiotic analysis, the study demonstrates how the artwork reflects the authors’ lived experiences and contributes to the novel’s gritty, direct atmosphere. The article also discusses the controversy surrounding the graphic novel’s provocative title, noting that although it initially attracted considerable attention, interest quickly declined and copies have …

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Fear And Coercion In Government Definitions Of Terrorism, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In this chapter I review government definitions of terrorism to show the popularity of assuming that terrorists aim to coerce governments and their citizens through fear. Then I draw out some of the costs of this assumption for analysts of terrorism, practitioners of counterterrorism, and targets of terrorist attacks. Including fear and coercion in definitions of terrorism blinds us to the importance of terrorist aims other than coercion, of emotions other than fear, and of audiences other than terrorist victims. In particular I argue that terrorists aim to elicit anger and overreaction that will advance their cause. Ignoring this strategy …

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Radicalization refers to changes in beliefs, feelings, and actions toward increased support for one side of an intergroup conflict. The extreme of action radicalization is political violence and terrorism. Twelve psychological mechanisms driving participation in political violence are identified.  At the individual level, motivation to engage in political violence can be based on personal grievance, political grievance, “slippery slope” participation in illegal political activity, love for already-radicalized friends and relatives, and social disconnection (”unfreezing”) that opens an individual to new ideas and new comrades.  At the group level, participation in political violence can emerge from extremity shift of like-minded group …
