This study explores how the use of proactive and reactive discipline strategies, as contained in schools’ student handbooks and codes of conduct, are related to school and neighborhood characteristics. The neighborhood and school level characteristics consist of urbanicity, socioeconomic need, racial composition, attendance rates, suspension rates, and academic performance. The total sample consists of 93 middle and high schools in the Shelby County School District (the most populous urban district in Tennessee) and its surrounding suburban municipal districts of Bartlett, Millington, Collierville, Arlington, Lakeland and Germantown. The geospatial analysis and logistic regression analysis reveal that proactive discipline approaches and alternatives …

Given the global nursing shortage and the increasing prevalence of workplace stressors, resilience has emerged as a crucial factor influencing job satisfaction, preventing burnout, and ensuring high-quality patient care. While previous research has established a connection between resilience and various occupational outcomes, the mediating effect of health-promoting behaviors—such as physical activity, diet, and sleep—remains largely unexplored, underscoring the need for further investigation in this area. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the effect of chosen lifestyle aspects on the connection between resilience and job satisfaction among nurses.

Capsaicin, a naturally occurring polyphenol, is known to affect energy expenditure and muscle fatigue and modulate contractions in skeletal muscle. The L-type Ca2+ channels are known to be an important ion channel involved in the various muscle functions and the effect of capsaicin on the skeletal L-type Ca2+ channels is currently unknown. In this study, the effects of capsaicin and capsaicin analogs on depolarization-induced Ca2+ effluxes through L-type Ca2+ channels in transverse tubule membranes from rabbit skeletal muscle and L-type Ca2+ currents recorded using the whole-cell patch clamp technique in rat myotubes were examined. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) of any severity is associated with long-term systemic inflammation and increased risk of peripheral comorbidities, yet the mechanisms driving immune dysregulation and accelerated aging after repeated mild head impacts remain poorly defined. Here, we investigated the acute and chronic effects of repeated mild TBI (rmTBI) on distal and proximal bone marrow compartments in the femur and calvaria, respectively. Using a modified weight-drop mouse model delivering rotational and acceleration-deceleration forces (3 hits/week for up to 16 weeks), rmTBI produced no mortality, skull fracture, hemorrhage, or brain leukocyte infiltration. One day after three consecutive impacts, rmTBI induced robust …
Decoupling Of Reproduction And Lifespan Trade-Off In Caenorhabditis Elegans Through Microbial Programming, Nora M. Villafuerte
Decoupling Of Reproduction And Lifespan Trade-Off In Caenorhabditis Elegans Through Microbial Programming, Nora M. Villafuerte
LSU Master's Theses
The microbiome is increasingly recognized as a major regulator of host physiology. Using the Caenorhabditis elegans model, we investigated how natural commensal bacteria modulate host reproduction and lifespan through internal egg hatching, a phenotype in which retained embryos hatch within the maternal body. Screening strains from the CeMbio collection identified four focal strains Ochrobactrum BH3, Lelliottia JUb66, Pantoea BIGb0393, and Enterobacter CEent1 that significantly increased internal egg hatching during the late reproductive period. This contrasts with pathogenic bacteria, which induce early-onset internal egg hatching. Across the focal strains, worms exhibited reduced total brood size but an expanded reproductive window relative …

System And Method For Emotion-Gated Linguistic Model Training Using Multimodal Emotional Confidence Evaluation, Chiranthan Niranjan
Defensive Publications Series
The presented proposal discloses a system and method for controlling linguistic model training using multimodal emotional confidence gating. The proposed system receives audiovisual media comprising spoken dialogue and associated visual, acoustic, and contextual signals, and automatically segments the media into scene portions based on detected emotional stability characteristics. A multimodal emotion analysis module generates an emotional confidence score for each scene portion by fusing facial expression features, vocal prosody parameters, temporal emotional consistency indicators, and contextual correlation data. A training control module compares the emotional confidence score against a configurable threshold and selectively authorizes or suppresses linguistic parameter updates of …

A Comparative Analysis Of Eyewitness Testimony Accuracy: Victims Versus Bystanders, Allyson Phillips
The Confluence
Eyewitness testimony is a vital yet fallible component of the criminal justice system. This study investigates differences in eyewitness testimony accuracy between two witness types: victims and bystanders, adding to the scarce literature regarding the subject. Participants were assigned to either the Victim or Bystander Group and participated in a memory test. During the memory test, a staged intruder entered the room and stole either a gift card belonging to the participant (Victim Group) or me (Bystander Group). Following the theft, participants were given an eyewitness testimony survey and photo lineup to assess their memory of the theft and intruder. …
Lucy Wortham James And The Gospel Of Wealth: A Case Study Of Female Philanthropy In Rural Missouri During The Progressive Era, Jacob F. Rinehart
Lucy Wortham James And The Gospel Of Wealth: A Case Study Of Female Philanthropy In Rural Missouri During The Progressive Era, Jacob F. Rinehart
The Confluence
Various historical scholars have examined the role of Andrew Carnegie's Gospel of Wealth on philanthropic attitudes and endeavors of affluent Americans during the Progressive Era. Modern developments, driven by post-structural feminist theory, have shown that rural-born Missouri women, exemplified by Phoebe Apperson Hearst, acted as complementary equals to Carnegie through their humanitarian efforts by uniquely interpreting and implementing his social doctrines. However, the existing scholarship has focused substantially on coastal developments, neglecting the role of this benevolence in rural Missouri communities. By examining the philanthropic endeavors of Lucy Wortham James, both during her life and post-mortem through her endowment of …

Learning Experiences From An Interprofessional, University-Based, Student-Led Healthcare Clinic In The Uk., Katharine Wood, Helen Frank, Konstantinos Papadopoulos
Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration
Student-led clinics (SLCs) are increasingly being adopted in physiotherapy and occupational therapy degree programs. SLCs are an innovative practice-based learning model that offers unique learning opportunities while solving the challenges of sourcing appropriate placements. However, there is little recent evidence of their use in healthcare education in the UK. To address this literature gap, a synchronous online focus group with seven participants was conducted to explore the learning experiences of undergraduate occupational therapy and physiotherapy students who attended an inter-professional, non-elective, university-based SLC in the UK. A thematic analysis approach was used to identify three main themes: (1) Learning With, …

A Case For Judge-Made Law For The American Jurists From An English Perspective—Drawing Example From The Human Rights Act 1998, Samuel Kuo
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Many authors frown upon judge-made law as an inappropriate and ghastly exercise of judicial activism in American jurisprudence. This, nevertheless, is not the view of English jurisprudence. This Comment proposes instead that the American legal audience should embrace the benefits of judge-made law as a means of correcting the rigidity and inadequacies of the legislature. It does so by drawing an example from the recent debates over whether the Human Rights Act 1998 should be amended or repealed by the legislature, which is comprised of the members of parliament sitting in the House of Commons. By drawing the example of …

“We are bullish about the power of football (soccer). It will become the number one sport in North America” —FIFA President Gianni Infantino
Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup. While the tournament is expected to generate more than $40 billion in economic activity across the continent, FIFA’s decision to award hosting rights to North America coincides with Gianni Infantino’s stated goal of dethroning American football as the most popular sport in North America. While billions of dollars and a healthy dose of soft power await North America on …

For many individuals, purchasing their first home is a monumental step which they look forward to for years. Homes are one of the most valuable assets individuals purchase within their lifetime. In the current housing market, reaching this milestone is becoming more and more difficult for individuals. Adequate and affordable housing is scarce. This is not just an issue plaguing the United States, but it is an issue many metro areas worldwide currently face.
Changing Climate, Changing Rights: How The Unitedstates Can Learn From The Emergence Of The Right To A Healthy Environment In Colombia And India, Jasmine Furin
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
The right to a healthy environment embodies the idea that environmental protection and the enjoyment of human rights are connected. As this concept has developed, authorities around the world have described the contours of this right in various ways. The right to a healthy environment generally includes a safe climate, clean air, healthy ecosystems, biodiversity, access to safe water, healthy and sustainable food, non-toxic environments, access to information, public participation in decision-making, and access to justice. Thus, the right to a healthy environment is unique because it provides individuals with a more complete set of protections against environmental harms compared …

International Journal of Transformative Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This practice-oriented self-study examines the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) literacy education model grounded in my reflective teaching practices and journey in graduate-level teacher education courses. As AI tools become increasingly embedded in educational and everyday technologies, both teachers and learners often remain unaware of the algorithms, data ethics, and biases that shape AI-driven systems (Ghallab, 2019; Ng et al., 2022). Recognizing that many teachers and teacher candidates responsible for educating the next generation have a minimal understanding of AI tools’ limitations and the ethical risks involved in AI use, I drew on my own experiences and knowledge as …

Exploring Chinese Elements In J.D. Salinger’S Works: A Response To Mccarthyism In The Early Cold War Era, Yixin Lu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Since the publication of “The Laughing Man” in 1949, various ideas about “China” have emerged in J. D. Salinger’s famously obscure works. This article aims to argue that Salinger’s incorporation of elements related to China and ancient Chinese philosophy in his works illustrates an artistic response to American anxieties during the McCarthy Era. The article uses “The Laughing Man” and “De Daumier-Smith’s Blue Period” as case studies to demonstrate how Salinger’s engagement with “China,” including the concept of indiscrimination from Zen Buddhist ideas, as well as notions of naturalness and non-action from Taoist ideas, develops not only a mystical writing …

Ginsberg’S China Experience And Its Influence On His Series Of Poems On China, Xiankai Ren
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
As a renowned poet and representative of the Beat Generation, Allen Ginsberg was invited to be a member of the US Writers’ Delegation to visit China in 1984. His China trip as well as his reading of traditional Chinese literature constitute his China experience, which is represented in Ginsberg’s poetry. This essay examines Ginsberg’s series of poems on China. It first shows that Ginsberg’s introduction to the Beat Generation poets and their poetics provided the inspiration for his poetry writing. Then it discusses Ginsberg’s observation of Chinese society during his visit and his reading of the Chinese poet Bai Juyi. …

In Memoriam Gwangju: Transnational Memoryscapes Of Gwangju And Buenos Aires In The Works Of Han Kang And Im Heung-Soon, Heewon Chung
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Currently acclaimed as the first Asian female author who won the Nobel Prize in literature, Korean writer Han Kang has persistently struggled with memoryscapes and traumascapes. Han’s collection of poems Winter Beyond the Mirror delineates the poetic “I”’s experiences of visiting Argentina and describes how she senses the interconnectedness between Gwangju and Buenos Aires. Korean artist-filmmaker Im Heung-soon’s recent film Good Light, Good Air addresses the same issue, and actually Im and Han have shared a mutual concern about it since Han’s novel Human Acts. This essay defines Winter Beyond the Mirror and Good Light, Good Air, coupled …
