High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy Feb 2026

High Stakes Literacy Testing: Indiana’S Iread-3, Christy Wessel Powell, Karyn Tomkinson, Whitney Rippy

Science of Reading

Indiana is one of a few states to enact a high stakes literacy test in third grade, the IREAD-3 test. High stakes testing is often a useful way to ensure a particular level of academic proficiency is met to allow students to succeed in a new setting, like college, or leave high school with desired skills. However, the requirement to automatically retain third graders who do not pass the IREAD-3 test without additional information or considerations, is not supported by research (AERA, 2000). These data highlight the critical need for educators and administrators to understand high-stakes standardized tests, as they …

Leveraging Molecular Mechanisms Of Desorption To Enhance Pfas Bioavailability In Contaminated Soils, Husam Kafeenah, Margaret D. Taiwo, Patrica Ivy Agorsor, Michael O. Eze

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are known for their strong binding properties to soil matrices owing to their amphiphilic properties. While most studies focus on the search for novel PFAS bio degraders, our knowledge of sustainable biomolecules that could drive PFAS desorption and make them more bioavailable is limited. This study investigated the effectiveness of rhamnolipids and organic acids in desorbing PFAS compounds from contaminated soil. Rhamnolipids (25 mg/L) significantly enhanced the release of PFAS compounds from soil, achieving up to 90 % desorption. Acetic acid provided 60–90 % desorption efficiency for most of the PFAS studied, except for PFDA …

Defending Code Language Models Against Backdoor Attacks With Deceptive Cross-Entropy Loss, Guang Yang, Yu Zhou, Xiangyu Zhang, Xiang Chen, Terry Yue Zhuo, David Lo, Taolue Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code Language Models (CLMs), particularly those leveraging deep learning, have achieved significant success in code intelligence domain. However, the issue of security, particularly backdoor attacks, is often overlooked in this process. The previous research has focused on designing backdoor attacks for CLMs, but effective defenses have not been adequately addressed. In particular, existing defense methods from natural language processing, when directly applied to CLMs, are not effective enough and lack generality, working well in some models and scenarios but failing in others, thus fall short in consistently mitigating backdoor attacks. To bridge this gap, we first confirm the phenomenon of …

Inflection Points In Academic Career Trajectories: Statistical Modeling And Interactive Visualization, Aicha Malouche Feb 2026

Inflection Points In Academic Career Trajectories: Statistical Modeling And Interactive Visualization, Aicha Malouche

Theses

This thesis examines the temporal structure of academic career trajectories, with a particular focus on identifying non-linear patterns of research productivity and moments of maximum acceleration in scientific impact. Situated within the broader context of bibliometric evaluation, the study responds to long-standing limitations of aggregate and linear career models that obscure heterogeneity across disciplines and national research systems. Drawing on theories of cumulative advantage, life-cycle productivity, and structural stratification, the research seeks to clarify how and when elite researchers experience peak growth in impact over the course of their careers. The study is guided by four research questions: (1) when …

Flips In Two-Dimensional Hypertriangulations, Herbert Edelsbrunner, Alexey Garber, Mohadese Ghafari, Teresa Heiss, Morteza Saghafian

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We study flips in hypertriangulations of planar points sets. Here a level-k hypertriangulation of n points in the plane is a subdivision induced by the projection of a k-hypersimplex, which is the convex hull of the barycenters of the (k−1)-dimensional faces of the standard (n−1)-simplex. In particular, we introduce four types of flips and prove that the level-2 hypertriangulations are connected by these flips.

Ethical Edibles, Hannah R. Weiser, Daniel R. Cahoy Feb 2026

Ethical Edibles, Hannah R. Weiser, Daniel R. Cahoy

University of Richmond Law Review

Modern firms acknowledge the advantages in acting ethically. For some time, the goal of shareholder profit maximization has shared the stage with objectives that benefit a broader group of stakeholders. Such benefits can be attractive to not only employees and consumers, but increasingly to investors as well. Whether it is called corporate social responsibility, sustainability, or ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), firms now routinely plan and report such ethical efforts. However, the notion of the ethical firm cannot escape the business operation itself. Some firms present ethical quandaries by the very nature of the products they sell or the stakeholders …

Integration Of One Health Activities Into Professional Student Education: Successes, Challenges, And Considerations, Karen Gruszynski, Mary Beth Babos, Reagan Bishop, Debra Sullivan, Laroy Brandt

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Interprofessional Education (IPE) creates opportunities for multiple disciplines to learn from each other and develop soft skills to improve patient care. One Health similarly emphasizes collaborative and interdisciplinary practice while recognizing the interconnectedness between human, animal, and environmental health. Despite the intersection of IPE and One Health, the meaningful integration of One Health within IPE remains uneven and difficult to operationalize. This perspective synthesizes experiences from multi-college programs implementing One Health-oriented IPE, highlighting successes, challenges, and structural requirements. We argue that for One Health to be successfully integrated into IPE for professional students, it requires extensive logistical planning, coordinated institutional …

Secondary School Students' Engagement In Learning Activities: Validation Of A Short Scale, Feliciano Henriques Veiga, Zi Yang Wong, Johnmarshall Reeve, Shane Jimerson, Antonio Leite, Joan Perales, Sonia Valente, Isabel Martinez

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Student engagement is a multidimensional construct strongly associated with learning outcomes and academic success. However, its measurement remains challenging, as existing instruments often conflate engagement in learning activities with engagement in the school community. In addition, brief measures are scarce despite their increasing value, and most available instruments do not incorporate agentic engagement. Assessing student engagement in learning activities is, therefore, crucial for monitoring academic progress, identifying students at risk of dropping out, and predicting academic success. This study aimed to validate the 12-item Secondary School Student Engagement in Learning Activities: Short Scale, adapted from a higher education measure, which …

New Asymptotics Applied To Functional Coefficient Regression And Climate Sensitivity Analysis, Qiying Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang Feb 2026

New Asymptotics Applied To Functional Coefficient Regression And Climate Sensitivity Analysis, Qiying Wang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Ying Wang

Research Collection School Of Economics

A general asymptotic theory is established for sample cross moments of nonstationary time series, allowing for long-range dependence and local unit roots. The theory provides a substantial extension of earlier results on nonparametric regression that include near-cointegrated nonparametric regression as well as spurious nonparametric regression. Many new models are covered by the limit theory, among which are functional coefficient regressions in which both regressors and the functional covariate are nonstationary. Simulations show finite sample performance matching well with the asymptotic theory and having broad relevance to applications, while revealing how dual nonstationarity in regressors and covariates raises sensitivity to bandwidth …

Generalized Ramsey Numbers Of Cycles, Paths, And Hypergraphs, Deepak Bal, Patrick Bennett, Emily Heath, Shira Zerbib Feb 2026

Generalized Ramsey Numbers Of Cycles, Paths, And Hypergraphs, Deepak Bal, Patrick Bennett, Emily Heath, Shira Zerbib

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Given a k -uniform hypergraph G and a set of k -uniform hypergraphs H , the generalized Ramsey number f ( G , H , q ) is the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color G so that every copy of every hypergraph H ∈ H in G receives at least q different colors. In this note we obtain bounds, some asymptotically sharp, on several generalized Ramsey numbers, when G = K n or G = K n , n and H is a set of cycles or paths, and when G = K n k and H contains …

Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Diagnosis Of Rotating Machinery Using Latent Odes And Transformer Encoders, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Mumtahina Ahmed, Kamruddin Nur Feb 2026

Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Diagnosis Of Rotating Machinery Using Latent Odes And Transformer Encoders, Md Al Amin, Mohammad Shafat Ahsan, Jannatul Maua, Mumtahina Ahmed, Kamruddin Nur

Student Publications [Scholarly]

This paper proposes a novel Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Diagnosis (PI-SSD) framework for rotating machinery fault detection, combining physical modeling, self-supervised representation learning, and uncertainty-aware classification. The architecture integrates a multi-resolution convolutional encoder, a windowed Transformer for temporal context modeling, and a latent neural ordinary differential equation (ODE) module that embeds mechanical priors, such as Jeffcott rotor dynamics, directly into the learning process. A masked segment reconstruction objective enables self-supervised pretraining using unlabeled healthy signals, while an evidential classifier head produces fault probabilities with calibrated uncertainty. We evaluate PI-SSD on two publicly available datasets, the NASA PHM’09 Gearbox dataset and the Aalto …

Challenges To Equity Leadership: Rural Leadership For Marginalized Students, Alex N. Oldham Feb 2026

Challenges To Equity Leadership: Rural Leadership For Marginalized Students, Alex N. Oldham

The Rural Educator

This study examines the challenges and importance of equity-oriented leadership in rural schools. Equity, as opposed to equality, involves providing all students with the resources and support they need to succeed. Research indicates that equity-oriented leadership is crucial for creating positive school climates and improving student outcomes. However, implementing equity-oriented leadership in rural schools can be particularly challenging due to contextual factors and potential resistance from communities with differing values. The study explores the challenges and benefits of equity-oriented leadership in rural schools. While some principals express a desire to lead equitably and implement various initiatives to promote positive outcomes …

From Classroom To Field: Rural Teachers’ Integration Of Science And The Outdoors, Steph N. Dean, Julianne A. Wenner Feb 2026

From Classroom To Field: Rural Teachers’ Integration Of Science And The Outdoors, Steph N. Dean, Julianne A. Wenner

The Rural Educator

This study explored how rural educators in the US use outdoor environments to enhance science instruction, addressing the educational marginalization of rural students. Using rural cultural wealth as a theoretical framework, we investigated how rural teachers integrate local nature-based resources and students’ out-of-school experiences into science learning. We conducted interviews and observations with rural teachers, using reflexive thematic analysis as our qualitative approach. Three key themes emerged that highlight the ways our participants use the outdoor environment to teach science: (a) harness rural community partnerships, (b) engage students through relational teaching, and (c) design learning opportunities that honor students as …

Impacts Of Literacy Programming During The Covid-19 And Recovery School Years, Julie Meredith Feb 2026

Impacts Of Literacy Programming During The Covid-19 And Recovery School Years, Julie Meredith

The Rural Educator

While numerous articles and research reports have focused on understanding the impact of COVID-19 recovery interventions on students in urban and rural schools, fewer have addressed the impact of school closures and efforts to recover lost learning time on children in rural schools. Children in rural areas faced challenges similar to their peers in urban and suburban areas, but infrastructure challenges in many rural places, such as lack of broadband, required tailored approaches guided by educators’ knowledge and connection to their communities. This article examines the impact of Save the Children’s school-age literacy program, supported by 21st Century Community Learning …

One-Step Purification Of A Bioactive Pak1-Derived Peptide, Djamali Muhoza, Emily P. Esquivel, Stacy R. Hunter, Pateince S. Okoto, Thallapuranam K.S. Kumar, Paul D. Adams

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The serine/threonine kinase PAK1 serves as a mediator of cytoskeletal reorganization and cancer-related signaling downstream of the small GTPases. Due to the challenges in purifying PAK1 complexes, a 46-residue peptide from PAK1, is widely used to study PAK1-Cdc42 signaling. Traditionally, this purification involved multi-step chromatography of recombinant GST-PBD46 complexes, yielding approximately 1 mg per 1.5 L culture. In this study, a 30 min heat treatment step after thrombin cleavage was used to precipitate GST while leaving pure PBD46 in solution. This step eliminated the need for further affinity and size-exclusion chromatography steps. This improved protocol produces proteins with a 6.5-fold …
