Purified Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval, Yang Zhou, Jingru Yang, Jin Wang, Kaixiang Huang, Guodong Lu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sketches, as a new solution in multimedia systems that can replace natural language, are characterized by sparse visual cues such as simple strokes that differ significantly from natural images containing complex elements such as background, foreground, and texture. This misalignment poses substantial challenges for zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (ZS-SBIR). Prior approaches match sketches to full images and tend to overlook redundant elements in natural images, leading to model distraction and semantic ambiguity. To address this issue, we introduce a distraction-agnostic framework, purified cross-domain matching (PuXIM), which operates on a straightforward principle: masking and matching. We devise a visual-cross-linguistic (VxL) sampler …

A Two-Pronged Approach To Addressing Unmet Legal Needs On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Elaine Yellow Horse, Jillian Yellow Horse

South Dakota Law Review

This Article, which marries theory and praxis, provides a focused literature review and concrete solutions for immediate implementation. It begins by exploring the existing scholarship pertaining to unmet legal needs and (in)access to justice in Indian country. It considers the overlapping yet distinct roles of licensed attorneys and lay advocates, prosecutors, and judges and how tribes have endeavored to draw the lines around these roles. After reviewing this background, the Article pivots and contributes a more nuanced perspective that concentrates on the legal system on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in particular. Rather than endorsing a single apparent answer to …

Phonics And Friends: A Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Popular Teacher Influencers' Content, Zachary T. Milford Jan 2026

Phonics And Friends: A Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Popular Teacher Influencers' Content, Zachary T. Milford

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This critical multimodal discourse analysis examined how five teacher-influencers aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR) movement performed authority, constructed discourses, and used affective and semiotic resources in viral TikTok videos about reading instruction. Drawing on Kress and van Leeuwen's (2001) multimodal social semiotics, Fairclough's (1992) critical discourse analysis, Foucault's (1977, 1982) theorizations of power, Papacharissi's (2014) theory of affective publics, Ong's (1982) secondary orality, and Taussig's (1993) mimesis and alterity, this interpretive, qualitative, multiple-case study analyzed fifty viral TikTok videos and four semi-structured interviews with teacher-influencers. Data were analyzed through within-case and within-mode coding, cross-modal analysis, and cross-case analysis …

The Impact Of Flight Instructor Feedback On Subsequent Instructor Evaluations Of Student Performance, Ayhan Rozyyev, Jennifer E. Thropp Jan 2026

The Impact Of Flight Instructor Feedback On Subsequent Instructor Evaluations Of Student Performance, Ayhan Rozyyev, Jennifer E. Thropp

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This study examines the impact of feedback tone and feedback order on flight instructors’ evaluations of student performance in an aviation training context. Using a 2×2 mixed factorial design, 40 certified flight instructors reviewed fictitious training records and rated students based on feedback that varied in tone (positive vs. negative) and order (positive-first vs. negative-first). Results showed that positive feedback significantly influenced evaluations across all measured dimensions, while feedback order had no significant effect, challenging assumptions about primacy and recency effects. These findings highlight the role of positive reinforcement in shaping instructor evaluations and suggest that structured training environments can …

Navigating The Challenges: Preflight Planning With Notam In Australia’S General Aviation Sector, Joshua Chiang, Guido Carim Junior

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) are an integral part of a pilot’s preflight navigational briefing, providing pertinent information in textual format. However, significant shortcomings have been found in the NOTAM system and in its use, with many of the shortcomings revolving around the interface. This study aimed to identify and evaluate the challenges general aviation pilots face when interacting with NOTAMs during preflight navigational planning. A thematic analysis study was conducted and included episodic semi-structured interviews with 15 pilots and document analysis. The interview transcription and excerpts of NOTAMs were analyzed following a thematic analysis technique. The findings of this preliminary …

Innovative Sovereignty: California Tribes' Use Of The Nonprofit Corporation, Stephen F. Diamond, Jennifer W. Kuan Jan 2026

Innovative Sovereignty: California Tribes' Use Of The Nonprofit Corporation, Stephen F. Diamond, Jennifer W. Kuan

South Dakota Law Review

Native American tribes have long sought, but not always received, federal recognition as sovereign Indian Nations. Recognition confers substantial financial and legal benefits including access to federally funded health services, education and housing. Sovereign status allows tribes to pursue business activity. Tribal sovereignty, however, has significant limitations. The recognition process is costly, time-consuming, highly politicized, and often uncertain. Federal law enforcement and health services that should follow recognition are chronically underfunded. We examine the efforts of Indian tribes in California’s Monterey County to use the nonprofit corporation form to establish clear property rights to land. We interview key participants and …

When A Black Man Is In The Principal’S Office: Black Male Leaders Navigating Racialized Spaces, Phillip Smith Jan 2026

When A Black Man Is In The Principal’S Office: Black Male Leaders Navigating Racialized Spaces, Phillip Smith

GSE Faculty Publications

This study describes the experiences of fourteen Black male principals or heads of school navigating racialized spaces, including the politics of race, and experienced racism in educational settings as well as in school leadership. Data analysis utilized a critical race theory (CRT) and culturally sensitive methodological and interpretive framework. The data analysis revealed themes associated with identity scrutiny, right to lead, meritocracy and color evasiveness, all falling within the white gaze paradigm. However, the results also suggest a demonstrable pathway for Black leaders to successfully navigate the pitfalls of the white gaze and experienced negative professional and personal reactions to …

‘The Way We Do Our Translation’: A Case Study Of Translation Policy For Spanish Speakers In The Public Parks Of Sonoma County, California, Gabriel González Núñez, Ángel María Casas Grageab, Christina Guerrero Harmon Jan 2026

‘The Way We Do Our Translation’: A Case Study Of Translation Policy For Spanish Speakers In The Public Parks Of Sonoma County, California, Gabriel González Núñez, Ángel María Casas Grageab, Christina Guerrero Harmon

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

Signs in public spaces can provide essential information. Especially at times of crises, and in places where there are large populations who speak a minoritized language, translation is often employed to create multilingual signage for the benefit of the community. After all, translated signs appear because some authority considers that a certain message is important enough to be visibly communicated to the public, including those who do not speak the State’s preferred language. The decision as to whether to translate or not certain signs may seem arbitrary, but one would hope that it is the result of a guided policy …

Access, Outcomes, And Sustainability In Seal Of Biliteracy Programs: Exploring Coordinators' Perceptions On Long Island, Faith Patricia Tripp Jan 2026

Access, Outcomes, And Sustainability In Seal Of Biliteracy Programs: Exploring Coordinators' Perceptions On Long Island, Faith Patricia Tripp

Theses & Dissertations

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) is an award recognizing high school graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one additional world language. Despite New York State's early adoption of the SoBL in 2012 and Long Island's regional leadership in awarding the seal, research suggests the credential disproportionately benefits White, English- dominant students rather than the multilingual learners it was originally meant to serve. Through semi-structured interviews with eight SoBL coordinators across fiscally and demographically diverse districts on Long Island, my study investigated how they described the program's value, the challenges and successes in implementation, and …

Review Of Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed's: Media, Culture, And Decolonization: Re-Righting The Subaltern Histories Of Ghana, Ignatius Suglo Jan 2026

Review Of Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed's: Media, Culture, And Decolonization: Re-Righting The Subaltern Histories Of Ghana, Ignatius Suglo

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

"In Media,Culture, and Decolonization: Re-righting the Subaltern Histories of Ghana, Wunpini Fatimata Mohammed sets out not only to offer a grounded examination of how colonial encounters and legacies still shape media cultures in Ghana but also to demonstrate how we can re-right these subaltern histories. The author playson re-rightingsubaltern histories by re-writinghistories that not only center the past and present work of indigenous communities but more importantly the conceptual grounding of this kind of work. Key here is how Mohammed centers indigenous communities in our thinking of decolonization, which stands starkly against mapping transatlantic experiences onto the nation-state by asking what …

Drift Aware Continual Finetuning Of Encoder-Only Text Classifiers Under Temporal Distribution Shift, Simran Kc Jan 2026

Drift Aware Continual Finetuning Of Encoder-Only Text Classifiers Under Temporal Distribution Shift, Simran Kc

Theses

The performance of encoder-only text classifiers degrades silently as their input distribution drifts over time. This thesis presents a closed-loop pipeline for drift-aware continual fine-tuning that combines a sample size invariant drift severity metric, an automated retraining loop on the most drifted samples, and a validation gate that rejects unsafe updates before deployment. We evaluate the pipeline on two datasets, Amazon Electronics Reviews and HuffPost News Category, and observe significant performance improvements over the initially trained model, along with a substantial reduction in compute and labelling costs compared to fresh-per-year and cumulative retraining baselines.

The Efflorescence Of Apocalypticism (Imminent & Prepping Beliefs): Considering Informational And Motivational Regulatory Mechanisms, James T. Good Mr.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In the last quarter of the 21st century, apocalyptic beliefs emerged in scholarly and lay representations notably doubling over the last decade. With nearly forty percent of United States citizen reporting this belief, unfulfilled questions arose: What drives discrepancies in beliefs of an imminent end of the world? Additionally, what drives beliefs in the need to prepare for an end of the world? These individual questions were examined together in this study using Construal Level Theory (CLT) and Regulatory Focus Theory (RFT) in an attempt to identify how psychological mechanisms are significantly affecting the fluctuations, in these self-reported beliefs. A …

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon Jan 2026

"Sing It Again": Linguistic Medievalisms In Geoffrey Hill And Seamus Heaney, Christian Cotten-Dixon

Honors College Theses

This study examines the use of early medieval structure and language in the poetry of Seamus Heaney and Geoffrey Hill, focusing on their near-contemporary collections, North and Mercian Hymns. Both collections use etymological and poetic structures to fashion an imagined medieval past in order to discuss personal and cultural narratives of history. Leveraging these structures in poetry and digging them out of past strata like a material artifact, Heaney and Hill collapse linear systems of time and language and access past word forms even as they evolve. This archaeological approach to poetry gives them the means to place the …

Using Culturally Familiar Readings In A Predominantly Latinx Middle School To Bolster Self-Efficacy, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D., Morgan Adams, Meagan Chisholm, Kate Warner Jan 2026

Using Culturally Familiar Readings In A Predominantly Latinx Middle School To Bolster Self-Efficacy, Heather M. Kelley Ph.D., Morgan Adams, Meagan Chisholm, Kate Warner

Georgia Educational Researcher

Twenty-eight seventh graders from a predominantly Latinx middle school participated in an instructional intervention involving both a culturally familiar and unfamiliar reading task. Immediately after reading, students joined focus groups to discuss their experiences. These sessions were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a discourse analysis framework. The analysis revealed that students based their reading self-efficacy on three key factors: their ability to relate to the text, their interest in the story, and the perceived difficulty of the task. The findings suggest that implementing culturally sustaining pedagogy—through the use of culturally relevant texts—can enhance reading self-efficacy and support academic achievement for …

The Ambitions Of History And Tradition In And Beyond The Second Amendment, Joseph Blocher, Reva B. Siegel Jan 2026

The Ambitions Of History And Tradition In And Beyond The Second Amendment, Joseph Blocher, Reva B. Siegel

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the ambitions of history-and-tradition review in and beyond the Second Amendment. In Bruen and Rahimi, the Roberts Court rejected means-end review in favor of a historical-analogical approach, claiming to constrain the exercise of judicial discretion and thus to promote the democratic decisions of the founders. But our examination of these cases shows that the Court has created new opportunities for judges to advance their values in considerably less transparent ways. We identify contexts in which Second Amendment doctrine enables judicial discretion, key among them that it allows judges to reason about gun rights and regulation at disparate …

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Abstract

This dissertation explores the racial identity development and associated mental health challenges of Chinese Adolescent International Students (CAIS) in Canada, a population navigating complex intersections of race, age, migration, and belonging. Despite their growing presence in Canadian secondary education, CAIS remain understudied in both educational and mental health research, particularly in relation to racial identity development within Western, multicultural societies. Using a Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology, this study draws on in-depth interviews with twenty-five CAIS participants, including ten current high school students, three returnees to China, and twelve who remained abroad in post-secondary education or employment.  The study is …

Standard Textualism, James A. Macleod Jan 2026

Standard Textualism, James A. Macleod

Articles

For as long as legal scholars have been writing about the rules-versus-standards distinction, textualism has been understood to produce characteristically rule-like law. This Article argues for the opposite view. Far from generating the “law of rules” that Scalia famously envisioned, the rule of modern textualism produces a law of standards—much more so than anybody, proponent of textualism or critic, appears to have recognized.

Two aspects of today’s textualism produce this result. The first is its emphasis on ordinary language and communication. Modern textualism typically produces standards because ordinary language and communication are typically standard-like. The second is modern textualism’s drive …

Embodied Tales Of Older Women And Their Relationship With Movement And Their Younger, Present And Future Selves, Valeria Varea, Robyne Garrett, Alfonso García-Monge, Gustavo González-Calvo

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Ageing has been often seen as negative in Western cultures. Older bodies are frequently associated with decline, loss, dependency, illness and increasing incompetence. Significantly, this ‘decline model’ of ageing tends to ignore the diverse lived experiences of older adults. This paper draws on the theoretical concepts of embodiment and affect to explore the embodied experiences of a group of 17 older women, focussing on their relationship with movement and with their younger, present and future selves. We used a narrative analysis approach and creative nonfiction to represent the data. The findings are presented in composite narratives in the form of …

Gauging Affective Atmospheres In Language Teacher Education Through Dialogic Queering As Transformative Research, Julian Chen, Maggie Mcalinden

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Inspired by feminist queering and affect theories to disrupt research norms, we drew on our felt experiences to explore the affective atmosphere of language teacher education. In this experimental work, we harnessed affect and queer theories to contest the gendered, classed, and heteronormative atmosphere of language teacher education using a form of post-qualitative inquiry that we named “dialogic queering”. Given our marginalized backgrounds (queer; academic of colour; working-class female academic), dialogic queering creates spaces to explore difficult but genuine thoughts and feelings while challenging norms entrenched in language teacher education. Underpinned by critical empathy, dialogic queering allowed us to decenter …

Optimizing Ev Battery Charging Using Fuzzy Logic In The Presence Of Uncertainties And Unknown Parameters, Minhaz Uddin Ahmed, Md Ohirul Qays, Stefan Lachowicz, Parvez Mahmud

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The growing use of electric vehicles (EVs) creates challenges in designing charging systems that are smart, dependable, and efficient, especially when environmental conditions change. This research proposes a fuzzy-logic-based PID control strategy integrated into a photovoltaic (PV) powered EV charging system to address uncertainties such as fluctuating solar irradiance, grid instability, and dynamic load demands. A MATLAB-R2023a/Simulink-R2023a model was developed to simulate the charging process using real-time adaptive control. The fuzzy logic controller (FLC) automatically updates the PID gains by evaluating the error and how quickly the error is changing. This adaptive approach enables efficient voltage regulation and improved system …
