Geopolitical Legitimacy Contestation Of The 2026 Iran War In Al-Jazeera: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Doni Firdaus, Fahmy Lukman
Journal of Middle East and Islamic Studies
This study investigates the discursive strategies and geopolitical legitimacy contestation surrounding the 2026 conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel, as reported by Al-Jazeera Arabic. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework-comprising textual analysis, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice-the research decodes how media language constructs power relations and ideological hegemony. The data is sourced from ten purposively sampled Al-Jazeera reports, spanning multiple journalistic genres, published between February and March 2026. The findings reveal a significant discursive shift in Al-Jazeera's editorial framing. Textually, the use of symmetric prepositions such as "بين" (between) and the juxtaposition of …

Jurnal Pendidikan Geografi: Kajian, Teori, dan Praktek dalam Bidang Pendidikan dan Ilmu Geografi
Society 5.0 and globalization have transformed social organization in physical and digital spaces, reshaping cultural practices and the construction of Malay identity in Malaysia. Although previous studies have examined Malay culture, modernization, and identity, a systematic synthesis of how Malay culture adapts to technological and social change from a cultural geography perspective remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the patterns of Malay cultural adaptation and identity reconstruction in the Society 5.0 era in Malaysia. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to review 22 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 concerning …

City Context And Climate Risk Perception In Arkansas, Mohammad Mizanur Rahman
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perceptions of climate change risk are shaped by both individual-level factors, such as cultural worldviews, party identification, and demographic characteristics, as well as by local environmental and contextual characteristics. This study, conducted in Arkansas, employed both individual- and city-level analyses to assess the influence of local context on variation in climate change risk perception. At the city level, measures of climate policy environment, digital infrastructure, civic and resource context, political landscape, and climate-related vulnerability were developed and compared across Arkansas cities. At the individual level, the analysis explored associations between cultural worldviews, party identification, demographic variables, and climate risk perception. …

Journal of Bioresource Management
Momordica charantia (bitter melon) is a significant medicinal plant, having been long used in traditional medicine in Asian, African and South American systems. M. charantia is more than a traditional medicine; by consolidating existing evidence, it is a promising source of drug discovery and can serve as a complementary in contemporary therapeutics. Over the last several decades, it has become the subject of contemporary biomedical studies due to its abundance of phytochemicals, such as saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, and polypeptides. These bioactive compounds present a wide range of pharmacological processes that M. charantia can be a natural solution to some of …

Fashion Industry: Analysis Of Strategies And Roles Of Stakeholders To Realize Indonesia As The Center Of Global Halal Fashion, Hanna Abimafy Mawaddatunnisa, Nur Fatwa, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin
Journal of Middle East and Islamic Studies
Indonesia, through the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), has launched the Indonesia Global Halal Fashion (IGHF) initiative in collaboration with the textile industry and fashion designers during Indonesia Fashion Week 2024. This initiative aims to position Indonesia as a global hub for halal fashion—distinct from general Muslim fashion by incorporating halal principles throughout the entire production chain. Despite its vast potential, the development of halal fashion in Indonesia still faces challenges, particularly in capturing consumer preferences and defining comprehensive regulatory standards. This study adopts a qualitative approach, integrating SWOT analysis, STP (Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning), and the Quadruple Helix framework to …

Preserving The Family In The Globalized Era: Explaining State Discouragement Of Women’S Rights And The Gap Between Law And Family Realities In Tajikistan, Ivy Alexandra Raines
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation is guided by a two-part research question, which begins by asking why Tajikistan exhibits low levels of gender equality within the family despite strong international commitments and a formally secular legal framework. The second question builds on the first by asking why a state that offers legal guarantees in line with its international commitments, as outlined by Article 16 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), invests significant energy in discouraging divorce rather than in safeguarding women’s rights that would support their ability to leave harmful marital situations. Employing qualitative discourse …

Decolonizing International Law, Modirzadeh’S Critique, And Homework For Islamic International Law Scholarship: An Attasian Approach, Fajri Matahati Muhammadin, Rafsi Azzam Hibatullah Albar
Indonesian Journal of International Law
Naz Khatoon Modirzadeh published an article criticizing the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) movement for its purported inability to achieve its purpose as a response to one of the major international law decolonization projects. One of her criticisms is that TWAIL lacks a cohesive counter-vision of international law, actual representation of third-world views, and organized political movements. Within the heavily diverse (which is one of the problems) TWAIL camp, among others, is the voice of Islamic law. Most Muslim nations have been at the receiving end of the brute force of colonialism. Colonialism is, in fact, responsible for …
Philosophia From Dialectic To Dying Before Death: Traces Of Plato’S Spirit In The Encounters Between The Falāsifa, Mutakallimūn, And Sūfiyya, Fadhil Yunus Alsagoff
Philosophia From Dialectic To Dying Before Death: Traces Of Plato’S Spirit In The Encounters Between The Falāsifa, Mutakallimūn, And Sūfiyya, Fadhil Yunus Alsagoff
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis offers a fresh approach to the question “What is philosophy?” by reconsidering Plato’s vision of philosophiaand seeking its traces in the encounters between the Falāsifa, the Mutakallimūn, and the Sūfiyya of the classical Muslim world. I argue that Plato’s true legacy lies in a vision of philosophia as dialectical inquiry that ultimately leads – due to the inextricable limitations of propositional language – to aporia and what he called “practicing for dying and death.” I then argue that this vision of philosophia finds resonance in the classical Muslim world in the embodied encounters between …
Scruples Before Religion: Muslim Waraʿ Of The Formative Period, Omar Laaroussi
Scruples Before Religion: Muslim Waraʿ Of The Formative Period, Omar Laaroussi
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis studies the conceptual history of waraʿ and its role as a normative paradigm existing in the formative centuries of the Islamic world. To do so, I consider the Hellenic concepts that ground Near Eastern understandings of virtue and piety before the rise of Islam. This, I then use to contextualise a focused discussion on the textual history of waraʿ before moving on to discuss its properties in a ascetic social-world through the analysis of those very texts. I attempt to place those properties in conversation with modern philosophers’ work on disciplinary regimes and their impacts upon the self. …

This study sought to map out the institutions and processes of halal certification in Indonesia and Malaysia by investigating the history, procedures, challenges, and opportunities. Data were gathered through interviews with those working in halal certification–related institutions, such as MUI and BPJPH in Indonesia, and JAKIM in Malaysia, in addition to several halal auditors from universities in both countries. A close reading of primary documents issued by halal certification institutions and secondary documents, academic articles, and online resources was conducted to better understand the issues at hand. The results suggest that while historically halal certification in Indonesia and Malaysia came …

Sharia Compliance As The Potential Factor For Halal Tourism Destination Development, Shofiyun Nahidloh, Lailatul Qadariyah
Nusantara Halal Journal
The substantial potential of Indonesian halal tourism expansion has obtained society's immediate attention. It is reflected in Indonesian Muslim majority society's religious enthusiasm, potentially appealing halal tourism destination resources, and the economic potential to enhance social welfare. Recently, society has put tourism as one of their needs, not as their leisure activity. Many tourist destinations in Indonesia have been declared as halal tourism sites. However, many people perceive halal tourism as a mere trend and brand adopted due to the halal substantial elements, such as hotels and restaurants. Therefore, a sharia principle is critically required to be the fundamental guideline …

Tinjauan Buku What Is Religious Authority? Menyemai Sunnah, Merangkai Jamaah, Amri Mahbub Alfathon
Tinjauan Buku What Is Religious Authority? Menyemai Sunnah, Merangkai Jamaah, Amri Mahbub Alfathon
Antropologi Indonesia
A new conceptualization of religious authority has emerged from Ismail Fajrie Alatas’ What is Religious Authority. Through his ethnographic study, Alatas provides a rich and detailed account of the formation of this authority by examining the life history of Maulana Habib Luthfi bin Yahya. Additionally, he meticulously illustrates the migration of the Ba’Alawi community from Hadramaut to Indonesia, a region that has become a melting pot of Islamic traditions and a site for articulating the Sunnah and building communal networks. Alatas’s discussion of the formation of religious authority is fundamentally anchored in three key concepts: authority, the Sunnah-community relationship, …
The Historical Persistence Of Working-Class Culture: How Laborers Created The Ethical Foundation Of Western Civilization, Kenneth Atkinson
The Historical Persistence Of Working-Class Culture: How Laborers Created The Ethical Foundation Of Western Civilization, Kenneth Atkinson
Faculty Publications
This article highlights four historical events that shape our present: the world’s first industrial strike in ancient Egypt to protest workers’ health and safety; working-class efforts to improve labor conditions during the Roman Republic and Middle Ages through strikes and the creation of guilds; the social justice activism of the prophets of Western religions (all working-class folks!); and the creation of the selfie and the transition from a culture of character to our present obsession with celebrities and individualism that began during the Renaissance. Each case highlights unique features of working-class culture, working class reactions to societal changes, and the …
The Mystical Soundscape And The Functions Of Commentaries On Ibn Al-Fāriḍ’S (D. 632/1235) Naẓm Al-Sulūk, Sherine Mohsen Aboulwafa
The Mystical Soundscape And The Functions Of Commentaries On Ibn Al-Fāriḍ’S (D. 632/1235) Naẓm Al-Sulūk, Sherine Mohsen Aboulwafa
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines Ibn al-Fāriḍ’s Naẓm al-Sulūk and its earliest commentaries by al-Farghānī (d. 700/1300) and al-Tilimsānī (d. 690/1291) through the analytical framework of the mystical soundscape. Rather than treating the poem and its commentaries as static texts, it argues that meaning in this corpus emerges as an experiential and perceptual event sustained through sound, silence, and reception. The mystical soundscape is conceptualized as comprising two interrelated domains: a silent soundscape, formed through reading, memory, imagination, and conceptual engagement; and an audible soundscape, formed through recitation, pronunciation, rhythm, and communal audition. These domains are linked by the experience of bewilderment …

(De)Slaving History And The Narratives Of Conquest, Lhoussain Simour
SOROUD: The journal of Literacy Criticism
This study explores an important chapter in Moroccan-American history centered on Mostafa Al-Azemmouri, a Moroccan captive and adventurer whose journey began on the shores of sixteenth-century Morocco. Captured by the Portuguese, sold in Spain, and transported to the New World around 1527, Al-Azemmouri was marginalized and misrepresented in historical accounts. The article reframes his voyage by examining Morocco's interactions with the Atlantic world, the Spanish perspective on overseas expansion after the Reconquista, and the Portuguese-Azemmour relationship, while critiquing Spanish sources that relegated him to obscurity.

Digital Communication And The Evolution Of Ideological Narratives In Indonesia: Insights From Social Media Platforms, Tia Mariatul Kibtiah, Muhammad Fikri Fawazi
Journal of Terrorism Studies
This study examines how pro-caliphate and anti-democratic narratives are articulated and normalised within YouTube comment spaces in Indonesia. As the world’s largest Muslim-majority country with high levels of digital engagement, Indonesia provides an important context for analysing how political-religious discourses circulate through everyday digital interaction. The research analyses 1,354 YouTube comments related to the caliphate, governance, and democracy. Data were collected using Google Apps Script, manually filtered for relevance, and examined through qualitative content analysis informed by Social Network Theory (SNT) and the Radicalisation Factor Model (RFM). The findings show that 34.49% of comments endorsed ideological pro-caliphate narratives, while 35.97% …

UB Journal for Humanities
This study examines the Mecca–Jeddah Railway project (1289–1353 AH/1872–1934 AD) as one of the most prominent transportation ventures linked to serving pilgrims and reviving economic activity in the Hejaz. It aims to trace the project’s historical roots since the Ottoman era and analyze its development in light of political and economic shifts, leading up to the implementation attempts during the reign of King Abdulaziz. The research adopts a historical-analytical approach by analyzing various Ottoman, British, Egyptian, and French documents, as well as the newspapers Umm al-Qura and Sawt al-Hejaz. The study concludes that although the project was technically feasible, it …
Sayyid Qutb: Political Philosophy And The Global Decline Of Jihadist Legitimacy, Jorge A. Ferrara
Sayyid Qutb: Political Philosophy And The Global Decline Of Jihadist Legitimacy, Jorge A. Ferrara
Senior Theses
Historically and culturally, the meaning behind political philosophies has been misappropriated to serve new ideological aims, and understanding how contexts have changed is essential to contemporary debates surrounding militant jihadist ideology. Sayyid Qutb, a political philosopher in Egypt during the mid-twentieth century, whose political philosophy, which sought moral, spiritual, and societal reform in Egypt under Gamal ‘Abd-Nasser’s regime, has been classified as the philosopher of Islamic terror. In this thesis, I argue that Sayyid Qutb’s political philosophy has been misappropriated into a politicized and militant jihad ideology through successive reinterpretations by militant jihadist leaders, and that this misappropriation is evidence …
Symbolists Beyond The Magic: Appropriation In The Art Of Elihu Vedder And Gustave Moreau, Rebecca B. Shalliker
Symbolists Beyond The Magic: Appropriation In The Art Of Elihu Vedder And Gustave Moreau, Rebecca B. Shalliker
Art & Art History ETDs
This thesis examines the paintings of Elihu Vedder and Gustave Moreau as examples of how the late nineteenth-century Symbolist movement drew on Eastern regions as aesthetic sources for representing the spiritual. Considering the iconographic and conceptual overlap with the Spiritualist movement, it explores how these groups contributed to constructing an image of the “East” as inherently mystical. While existing scholarship analyzes the Symbolist movement’s engagement with psychoanalytical concepts such as the subconscious and dream state, the role of cultural appropriation in shaping the Symbolist aesthetic has been largely overlooked.
The depiction of Eastern iconography as fantastical will be explored through …

The Suit Of Independence From Revelation In Ibn Ṭufayl’S Ḥayy Ibn Yaqẓān. Analytical Study, Eman Alkhalide
UB Journal for Humanities
This study aims to explore the epistemological, ontological, and metaphysical dimensions in Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān, and to demonstrate that divine revelation cannot be dispensed with in affirming the existence of God, since there is no contradiction between sound reason and authentic transmitted revelation in this regard. The significance of this topic lies in the fact that the story of Ḥayy ibn Yaqẓān represents a rational argument and a natural proof for the existence of God, while also emphasizing the necessity of guidance through revelation in order to understand the divine law and the proper manner of worship as ordained by …

Feminist Solidarities And An Ethos Of Care: Reflecting On Faculty Marshal Experiences At The University Of Denver, Andrea L. Stanton, Dheepa Sundaram
Gatherings
Spring 2024 witnessed student encampment protests around the US and world protesting the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israeli occupation in Palestine. The University of Denver (DU) became part of this movement in April when students established a Palestine solidarity encampment, permitted by DU's then-current freedom of expression policies. To protect students' free speech rights, we trained as marshals alongside faculty and staff colleagues to ensure student rights, peacefully de-escalate tensions, and keep all community members safe. This essay adopts an autoethnographic approach grounded in our lived experiences and care-based interactions with campus and broader community. Taking an intersectional approach …

Serving The Poor While Securing The Vote Islamic Parties And Welfare Program In Decentralized Indonesia, Luthfi Makhasin, Burhan Yahya, Indaru Setyo Nurprojo, Ahmad Rofik
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country with complex and diverse social and economic welfare problems. These welfare issues sometimes become sensitive electoral issues used to mobilize electoral support in elections. One of the welfare problems experienced by its citizens is the issue of inhospitable housing (Rumah Tidak Layak Huni / RTLH). This article seeks to explain how RTLH has become an electoral issue through the conceptual framework of political linkage. It begins with the question of how Islamic parties contribute to overseeing welfare programs in general and, more specifically, the handling of RTLH at the local level. In contrast to much …

UB Journal for Humanities
This research explores Manifestations of God’s sufficiency for His believing servants as mentioned in the Prophetic Sunnah. It highlights that this sufficiency represents one of the highest levels of trust (tawakkul) and faith in Allah. The study explains that Allah’s sufficiency covers all aspects of a servant’s life—religious, worldly, sustenance, protection, victory, and the prevention of harm and attainment of benefit. The paper analyzes various hadiths that demonstrate Allah’s sufficiency for those who rely on Him, such as the saying: “Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs),” and the famous …
