Background: Necator americanus glutathione S-transferase-1 (Na-GST-1) performs a crucial enzymatic step in hookworm blood feeding and is a leading target for vaccine development. Phase 1 trials in Brazil, Gabon, and the USA of recombinant Na-GST-1 adsorbed on Alhydrogel (Na-GST-1/Al), co-administered with or without AP 10-701 (Toll-like receptor [TLR] 4 agonist) or CpG 10104 (TLR9 agonist), showed the vaccine was well tolerated, safe, and immunogenic. A controlled human hookworm infection (CHHI) model was previously developed to evaluate the effect of candidate hookworm vaccines on infection. We aimed to assess the effect of vaccination with three different Na-GST-1 vaccine formulations on subsequent …

Human Exposure To Spirochete-Infected Ornithodoros Turicata In A Residential Setting In The Austin, Texas Metropolitan Area, Serhii Filatov, Bonny Mayes, Sarah M Gunter, Alexander R Kneubehl, Job E Lopez

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

A central Texas resident found an engorged Ornithodoros turicata tick attached to their ankle while at home. The tick tested positive for Borrelia turicatae, an agent for soft tick-borne relapsing fever. Three weeks earlier, the patient started experiencing febrile episodes, rash, and nausea, yet the etiological agent went undiagnosed.

A Call To Investigate The Association Between Histoplasmosis And Fatigue, Christian Hendrix, Julio Zuniga-Moya, Andrej Spec, Patrick Mazi Jul 2026

A Call To Investigate The Association Between Histoplasmosis And Fatigue, Christian Hendrix, Julio Zuniga-Moya, Andrej Spec, Patrick Mazi

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Historically, infections are subjectively associated with fatigue, a common yet poorly delineated syndrome. The impact on patient quality of life is the ultimate justification to evaluate fatigue in patients with infections. While fungal infections are subjectively associated with fatigue, there are minimal quantifiable fungal research outcomes that evaluate histoplasmosis and fatigue.

Diagnostic Stewardship Of Respiratory Cultures Using Clinical Decision Support In The Picu, Anna C Sick-Samuels, John C Lin, Rebecca G Same, Et Al. Jul 2026

Diagnostic Stewardship Of Respiratory Cultures Using Clinical Decision Support In The Picu, Anna C Sick-Samuels, John C Lin, Rebecca G Same, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

IMPORTANCE: Endotracheal aspirate culture (EAC) practices for evaluation of ventilator-associated infections (VAI) vary widely across pediatric hospitals, and overuse can contribute to overdiagnosis and overtreatment for VAI. Diagnostic stewardship strategies to optimize EAC testing practices may reduce overtesting and unnecessary antibiotic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of diagnostic stewardship of EACs using clinical decision support with culture rates, antibiotic use, and patient outcomes across a multicenter collaborative of pediatric intensive care units (PICUs).

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a multicenter cohort study with a pre-post study design among the BrighT STAR (Testing Stewardship for Antibiotic Reduction) Quality Improvement …

The Effect Of Vaccine Mandates On Disease Spread: Evidence From College Covid-19 Mandates, Riley K. Acton, Wenjia Cao, Emily E. Cook, Scott A. Imberman, Michael F. Lovenheim Jul 2026

The Effect Of Vaccine Mandates On Disease Spread: Evidence From College Covid-19 Mandates, Riley K. Acton, Wenjia Cao, Emily E. Cook, Scott A. Imberman, Michael F. Lovenheim

Research Collection School Of Economics

Nearly 700 4-year U.S. colleges mandated students receive COVID-19 vaccinations in fall 2021. Using data on college policies and county health, we estimate how mandates affect surrounding communities. Event studies from August to November 2021 show that mandates covering all colleges in a county reduced COVID-19 deaths by 5.6 per 100,000 persons, a 4.6% reduction in the U.S. total during this period. Mandates reduced COVID cases by 504 and ICU admissions by 16.2 per 100,000, though we see no statistically significant impact on hospitalizations. Impacts are larger in counties with larger college populations and low estimated ex-ante student vaccination rates.

Analisis Implementasi Clinical Pathway Terhadap Length Of Stay (Los) Dan Biaya Perawatan Pasien Anak Dengan Demam Berdarah Dengue (Dbd) Di Rsi Nu Demak, Akhmad Safi’I, Muhammad Zulfikar Asumta, Abdul Aziz Jun 2026

Analisis Implementasi Clinical Pathway Terhadap Length Of Stay (Los) Dan Biaya Perawatan Pasien Anak Dengan Demam Berdarah Dengue (Dbd) Di Rsi Nu Demak, Akhmad Safi’I, Muhammad Zulfikar Asumta, Abdul Aziz

Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia

Clinical pathway (CP) is a quality and cost control instrument in hospitals designed to ensure service standardization, efficiency of Length of Stay (LOS), and control of healthcare costs. Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in children is an infectious disease that often requires hospitalization, with considerable variation in LOS and treatment costs. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of CP implementation on LOS and cost of care among pediatric DHF patients at Rumah Sakit Islam Nahdlatul Ulama (RSI NU) Demak. This research applied a quantitative approach using a retrospective descriptive-analytic design. Data were obtained from medical records of 34 pediatric DHF …

Discourse Representation Of Self And Other In The 2020 Trump-Biden Presidential Debates, Victor Babajide Ogunleye, Adesina B. Sunday

Journal of English and Applied Linguistics

Presidential aspirants in the United States engage in debates during campaigns as a medium of enlightening the electorate. Existing studies on the American presidential debates have largely focused on politeness, rhetoric, syntax, and gender, with little attention to the strategies employed to construct the self and opponent(s). Therefore, this research investigates the discourse representation in the presidential debates between Trump and Biden using van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of critical discourse analysis. Ten excerpts were purposively selected for their relevance in illustrating representation strategies. The analysis revealed positive self-representation and negative other-representation. Positive self-representation featured the self as competent, honest, altruistic, …
