The Implications Of Hla Phenotypes In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hummady A. Al-Hilaly, Khalida M. Al-Mousawy, Jassem Al-Khafaji, Nawal Al-Khalidy

Al-Qadisiyah Medical Journal

Susceptibility to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is, in part, genetically determined, and the HLA genes are candidate for a role in the genetic susceptibility to this disease, because their products play a central role in the immune responses. Multiple studies have reported associations between HLA phenotypes and either Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Crohn's Disease (CD), the major two disorders of IBD, but much of these data are still controversial. To estimate overall associations between HLA phenotypes and this disease, and to establish the probable etiologic or protective functions conferred by these molecules, a total of 71 Iraqis, Arabs patients (55 …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we will establish the existence of positive periodic solutions for a class of first order iterative functional differential equations by using a powerful and effective technique based on the Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem together with some useful properties of a Green's function. The obtained results that complement some previous works, are illustrated with an example.

Background More than 1 million Americans reside in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Antimicrobial transition errors among patients transferred from hospital to SNFs pose safety risks and may lead to poor outcomes, but data on such errors are limited.   Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study of infectious diseases clinics from 1 June 2020 through 30 November 2023 at the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, a large safety-net health system. We performed logistic regression analyses to identify factors associated with antimicrobial transition errors and poor infection outcomes.   Results We screened records of 6865 clinic patients, among whom 112 were …

Underexplored Maternal Microbiomes: Immune, Metabolic, And Microbial Pathways Shaping Pregnancy Outcomes, Rafael Tomoya Michita, Nicole Jimenez, Melissa M Herbst-Kralovetz, Indira U Mysorekar

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Maternal microbial ecosystems play critical roles in shaping reproductive physiology and pregnancy outcomes. During the pre-conception and prenatal periods, these communities modulate maternal physiology by regulating immune tolerance, nutrient metabolism, and susceptibility to pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. While the gut microbiota has been extensively studied, the roles of cervicovaginal, urinary, respiratory, oral, and upper reproductive tract microbiomes remain less clear. In this minireview, we synthesize current knowledge on these underexplored maternal microbiomes, with an emphasis on the cervicovaginal and urinary microbiota and their interactions with the placenta and fetus. We discuss cross-niche microbial …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background

Gut microbiome composition in HIV-infection provides insight into HIV pathogenesis and potentially offers avenues to adjunctive HIV therapies. Although two-thirds of people living with HIV (PLHIV) are in Africa, studies of the gut microbiome PLHIV have focused on non-African populations. Additionally, social, cultural, and environmental factors influence the gut microbiome and differ substantially between African and Western and urban and rural communities. Here, we quantify the relationships between immune status and fecal microbiome composition in 175 rural Ugandan PLHIV.

Methods

In 2013, 175 Ugandan PLHIV contributed a single fecal sample as part of a cohort study of 202 participants. …

A Comparative Study Of Antibacterial Activity Of Zno And Tio2 Nanoparticles Against Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Ghaed Salman Mar 2026

A Comparative Study Of Antibacterial Activity Of Zno And Tio2 Nanoparticles Against Gram-Positive And Gram-Negative Bacteria, Ghaed Salman

Engineering and Technology Journal

Using the sol-gel technique, this study successfully synthesized two types of nanoparticles, ZnO and TiO2. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum exhibited a broad peak, providing insights into crucial chemical bonds. The average grain sizes, 18.6 nm for ZnO and 12.6 nm for TiO2 were determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the (ZnO & TiO2) powder revealed the presence of pores and agglomeration. The antimicrobial efficacy of these nanoparticles was evaluated against Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli and Proteus) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staph. aureus). The results demonstrated the capability of both ZnO and TiO2 to impact bacterial …

Design And Implementation Of Remote Real-Time Monitor System For Prosthetic Limbs, Hussein Mansoure, Hadeel Abdullah

Engineering and Technology Journal

Persons with Lower-limb amputations experience movement restrictions resulting in worsening their life quality. Wearable sensors are often utilized to evaluate spatial and temporal qualities and kinetic parameters that provide the mechanism to create interactive monitoring of the amputee prosthesis system. Gait events and detection of the gait phase of amputee movement are essential to control the prosthetic devices of lower limbs.  This paper presents real-time monitoring to individuals with lower limb amputation by using a medical wireless sensor. However,  the proposed system used four medical sensor nodes (such as gait, temperature, the pressure of blood, blood oxygenation (SpO2) )for transmitted …

Horizontal Gene Transfer In Neisseria, Wen Ting Dong Mar 2026

Horizontal Gene Transfer In Neisseria, Wen Ting Dong

Theses

Antibiotics are a special category of drugs that help treat bacterial infections by killing bacteria or hindering their growth and replication. Antibiotics are greatly significant in modern medical practices, providing an effective treatment for bacterial infections as well as enabling organ transplants, open surgeries, and chemotherapy to be possible. Unfortunately, cases of antibiotic resistance were observed shortly after the introduction of antibiotics. The appearance and spread of these resistant strains poses a significant threat to public health safety. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates there are 2,868,700 antibiotic-resistant bacterial and fungal infection cases per year in the United States, …

Heat And Socioeconomic Deprivation Compound To Drive Coronary Heart Disease In Los Angeles, Shutong Huo, Tessa R. Pulido, Reginald S. Archer, Joshua B. Fisher, Jason A. Douglas

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Background:

Socioeconomic deprivation and environmental heat exposure each increase cardiovascular risk, yet evidence is limited on how these stressors co-occur and jointly shape disease burden within cities. Mapping their overlap can inform equity-oriented planning and needs-based allocation of health and social protection resources.

Methods:

We conducted an ecological geospatial analysis of 2,513 census tracts in Los Angeles County. Adult coronary heart disease (CHD) prevalence was obtained from CDC Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates (2021). Socioeconomic deprivation was measured using the Social Deprivation Index (SDI), and heatwave surface heat hazard was measured using land surface temperature (LST) retrieved from the …
