"Principle Before Party": Samuel "Golden Rule" Jones And The 1899 Ohio Gubernatorial Election, Connor Hand
Honors Projects
As partisan loyalty declined and resentment grew against American social, political, and economic conditions at the end of the nineteenth century, political reformers saw an opportunity to spread their ideals for a better society. Most reformers opted against running for office, and those who did often used standard or newly formed political parties. Mayor of Toledo and progressive businessman Samuel Jones differed from the standard reformer by seeking office while embracing a non-partisan ideology. By analyzing Jones’ writings, the partisan response to his movement, and contextualizing him amongst reformers, this essay explores how Jones stood out from the standard political …

Critical Edition Of El Libertador: A Symphonic Poem By Costa Rican Composer Julio Mata (1899–1969), Manuel Monge Mata
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This project offers a critical edition of El Libertador, a symphonic poem composed by Costa Rican artist Julio Mata Oreamuno (1899–1969). The piece holds special importance in Costa Rican orchestral music and represents the symphonic poem genre in Latin American compositions. Although Mata is acknowledged as a key figure in the growth of Costa Rican musical institutions and composition during the twentieth century, much of his orchestral work remains rarely performed and not easily accessible to today’s performers.
The edition is based on manuscript sources kept in the Archivo Histórico Musical of the University of Costa Rica, consisting of …

Preserving The Untold Stories: Leveraging Emerging Technologies (Ai And Machine Learning) For Archiving Hidden Histories Of Children And Families Impacted By The Little Rock School Integration Crisis, Oluseyi Noah Adebanjo
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis challenges the dominant narrative of the Little Rock School Integration Crisis by recovering the hidden histories of families and siblings who made integration possible but have been systematically overlooked by historians. While existing scholarship focuses on the Little Rock Nine as individual heroes, this research demonstrates that integration was fundamentally a family crisis requiring collective decision-making, economic sacrifice, and multigenerational support networks. Through close reading of published memoirs, newspaper clippings, school board minutes, and original oral history interviews with Phyllis Brown and Dr. Sybil Jordan Hampton, this study reveals how approximately 200 eligible families were systematically reduced to …
Establishment Of A Hek293t Cell Model System To Investigate Direct Intracellular Interactions Between Amyloid-Β (Aβ) And The Nlrp3 Inflammasome, Cristina Sinobas Pereira
Establishment Of A Hek293t Cell Model System To Investigate Direct Intracellular Interactions Between Amyloid-Β (Aβ) And The Nlrp3 Inflammasome, Cristina Sinobas Pereira
Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia worldwide. While Amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation is a defining pathological feature, increasing evidence highlights chronic neuroinflammation as a critical contributor to disease progression. Soluble Aβ assemblies can act as damage associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) including activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, which links amyloid pathology to sustained inflammatory responses in the brain (Heneka et al., 2015; Nakanishi et al., 2018). However, the molecular mechanisms by which specific Aβ conformations influence inflammasome assembly remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate whether distinct aggregation states of amyloid β42 (Aβ42) are …

“The Left Leg Is Not Well”: Identity, Economy, And Ability In Early Modern Drama, Emma D. Whaley
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The human reality of the disabled experience often goes overlooked by scholars analyzing early modern literature. Most scholarship seems to interpret disability as metaphorical without examining the human who experiences it. In this paper, I will be examining disability in three early modern texts as literal and inquire into the realities of the disabled experience for the characters. A Larum for London, The Shoemaker’s Holiday, and The Fair Maid of the Exchange all prominently feature a disabled character—Stump, Ralph, and Cripple respectively. These characters offer a depth of personhood rarely examined in early modern literary scholarship, even in …

“Music Is The Instrument To Bring The Heart Of A Community Together”: Frederic Balazs And The Tucson Symphony Orchestra, 1952-66, Jackie Bodily Biggs
Theses and Dissertations
The audience for classical music is declining, according to data from the National Endowment for the Arts. In the face of such challenges, aspiring music professionals may find inspiration in the musicological illumination of pertinent historical case studies. This paper offers one such example via a foundational exploration of the musical career of Hungarian American violinist, conductor, and composer Frederic Balazs. Though lacking any dedicated scholarly literature to speak of, Balazs’s legacy as the first full-time conductor of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO) from 1952 to 1966 included establishing arts organizations and nourishing the classical tradition at its very grass …
The Gospel Of Resistance: How The Exodus Narrative Undermined Pro-Slavery Christianity, Lauren Reilly
The Gospel Of Resistance: How The Exodus Narrative Undermined Pro-Slavery Christianity, Lauren Reilly
Proceedings of GREAT Day
In the book of Exodus, God delivered the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt and into the Promised Land. For enslaved people in the United States in the 19th century, the beginning of this story felt familiar, and the end felt hopeful. By resonating with the Israelites, African Americans in the United States formed a distinct identity and theology that leaned on the hope of God’s justice and deliverance. Scholarship on Christianity among enslaved people has largely presented Exodus as a tool in forming identity and a sense of hope that God will deliver them in the same way He …
Long-Term Tillage And Straw Returning Practices Enhance Soil Humus Composition, Carbon Sequestration, And Ecological–Economic Benefits, Kai Wang
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
While straw return is widely promoted, its specific effects on soil humus composition, structure, and ecological functions are not fully understood. This study investigates the long-term impacts of different straw types and farming practices on humus composition, carbon sequestration, and ecological–economic benefits. In Hunan Province’s paddy fields, six soils with 5–30-year farming histories were selected. Treatments included a blank control, corn straw return, and rice straw return, each replicated three times. Humus structure was analyzed via infrared spectroscopy, component contents were determined by alkali extraction, and a carbon footprint model assessed emissions. Ecological economic analysis integrated soil carbon pool dynamics, …

Storytelling has served as a primary method for preserving cultural identity and sharing historical experiences within Appalachian communities. This research investigates the relationship between narrative traditions and natural disasters in the region, concentrating on how stories document and depict experiences with storms, floods, and landslides. Using a combination of archival sources and textual analysis, the study identifies recurring themes of communal resilience and solidarity despite environmental erosion, industrial expansion, and systemic neglect. Appalachian literary works serve as both historical records and insights into response mechanisms, revealing frameworks for analyzing and addressing environmental crises. The findings suggest that Appalachian storytelling is …

Ethnic and Cultural Amalgamation in Buenos Aires and the Evolution of Argentine Tango
Argentine tango is widely recognized as a national symbol of Argentina, yet it did not originate as a unified cultural expression. This project examines how large-scale immigration and urban geography in Buenos Aires between approximately 1880 and the mid-twentieth century shaped tango’s musical language and social meaning. During this period, the city absorbed massive numbers of Italian and Spanish migrants alongside existing Afro-Rioplatense communities, creating dense neighborhoods where diverse populations lived in close proximity. Shared housing, informal performance spaces, and working-class leisure environments produced sustained cultural interaction. …

Gathering Places: Indigenous Resources, Economies, And Diplomacy In The Northeastern Great Plains, 1650 – 1806 Ce, Matthew D. Busch
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Centuries before European arrival in the Great Plains region of North America, Indigenous exchange networks connected people within the continental interior to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the Gulf Coast. Throughout this vast Native Space, Indigenous peoples sought new resources and opportunities to create sustainable and successful lifeways by harnessing the spiritual, economic, and political power of place as they journeyed across the landscape.
The Coteau des Prairies centrally located between the Missouri, Mississippi, and Hudson's Bay watersheds within the Northeastern Great Plains represents a unique place of power. This imposing glacially modified landscape characterized by numerous lakes, fertile …

Accounting For Non-Monetary Exchange: A Systematic Review Of Barter Literature From Colonial Ledgers To Digital Economies, Christian Timotius Peilouw, Unti Ludigdo, Imam Subekti, Yeney Widya Prihatiningtias
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Non-monetary exchange systems persist throughout human history, challenging assumptions about monetary dominance and revealing fundamental limitations in conventional accounting frameworks. This systematic literature review examines how accounting practices adapt to and shape non-monetary exchange across diverse historical and contemporary contexts, investigating patterns in accounting practices, challenges to conventional theory, and implications for economic resilience. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review analyzed 28 peer-reviewed articles from 1979 to 2025 identified through Scopus database searches combining barter-related and accounting terms. The analysis reveals four major themes: historical foundations showing sophisticated proto-banking systems in colonial America that operated without currency; crisis-driven alternatives demonstrating how …

Ursine Transitions: An Analysis Of The Role Of The Bear Attack As A Transitionary Force In The Winter’S Tale And Beyond, Alison R. Liwosz
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale features a curiously specific bear among the pastoral romantic comedy, a bear that chases a character off stage and ends up eating him and another character. This bear’s symbolism and significance to the narrative will be the focus of this essay. This event occurs in the simple stage direction “Exit, pursued by bear” to close out the third act and court setting of the play. A description of the murders come from a character introduced from the pastoral latter half of the narrative, with the bear acting as the hinge between the two. The bear also …

Adoptive Cell Therapies For Glioblastoma: A Quest For Cures From Within, Jia-Shiun Leu, Xin Ge, Charles Robin Yu, Guang Peng, Jiyong Liang
The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine
Glioblastomas (GBMs) are the most aggressive form of brain cancer recalcitrant to both current standard-of-care and immune checkpoint therapies that benefit other cancer patients. Adoptive cell therapies (ACT) using patients' own immune cells have long been explored as a treatment strategy, including the historically studied lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells, the evolving chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) directed immune cells, the newly emerging tumor-infiltrating T lymphocyte (TIL) therapies, and others. Preclinical and clinical studies have shown promise but also highlighted significant challenges. In this review, we summarize these findings, highlight recent developments, discuss current limitations, and emphasize how ACT may benefit from …

History represents a set of facts from the past events that were real and genuinely occurred in their time. Historical sources are crucial for reconstructing and generalizing history so that it can be comprehended by students. However, the limited availability of historical sources poses a significant challenge for students when learning history. This limitation can be addressed by utilizing museum websites as learning resources. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of museum websites as a learning resource for history education. Research and Development (R&D) methodology was employed in this study. The research sample consisted of 180 high school students …
Adapting Early Music For Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, Bryson Camby Harding
Adapting Early Music For Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, Bryson Camby Harding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation addresses the absence of pre-nineteenth-century repertoire for the tuba and euphonium by demonstrating the pedagogical and musical viability of adapting Late Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque works for tuba/euphonium quartet. Because the tuba and euphonium emerged only after the invention of the valve in the nineteenth century, no original repertoire exists for these instruments from earlier periods. Consequently, low brass chamber literature has remained largely confined to modern compositions, limiting student engagement with modal harmony, imitative counterpoint, isorhythmic structure, basso continuo practice, and early formal design. Through historically informed and methodologically grounded transcription, this project expands the quartet canon …
Christian Leadership In Times Of Persecution: A Comparative Study Of The Pastoral Response Of Tertullian And Cyprian To The Phenomena Of Oppression And Martyrdom In North Africa, Thomas Michael Ray Knoff
Christian Leadership In Times Of Persecution: A Comparative Study Of The Pastoral Response Of Tertullian And Cyprian To The Phenomena Of Oppression And Martyrdom In North Africa, Thomas Michael Ray Knoff
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation examines Christian leadership during persecution through a comparative study of Tertullian and Cyprian in Roman North Africa in the late second and mid third centuries. Although both figures are central to early Christian theology and ecclesiology, their leadership is often assessed without sustained attention to the pressures created by persecution.
Using a historical and theological approach, the dissertation examines the writings and ministerial actions of Tertullian and Cyprian as responses formed under conditions of hostility. Close engagement with their treatises, letters, and apologetic works shows how persecution influenced their understanding of martyrdom and apostasy and guided their handling …

Citizenship Education In Social Studies: A Forty-Five-Year Content Analysis (1980–2025), Renita Parks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examined how citizenship education has been defined, discussed, and framed in major social studies journals between 1980 and 2025. While citizenship education has long been identified as a central purpose of social studies, its meaning has shifted in response to changing political, social, and educational contexts. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns and trends in how citizenship has been conceptualized in professional literature over a 45-year period. A qualitative content analysis was conducted using articles published in three prominent social studies journals. Articles were selected using predetermined criteria and analyzed for definitions of citizenship, contextual …
Opium Of The Masses: An Analysis Of Archeobotanical Research In The City Of Tábor, Czechia And How It Potentially Influenced Forms Of Radical Hussism, Sasha Gladding
Undergraduate University Honors Capstones
Opium of the Masses performs in depth analysis of the Hussite Wars–a time period lasting from 1419 to 1436, Jan Hus, Hussite factionalism, and archeobotany. This analysis proposes that there are numerous possible contributing factors to the development of the radical Hussite teachings and ways of life. The instability of the Catholic hierarchy and the dissenting teachings of Jan Hus also likely were contributors to the development of the unique sociopolitical and spiritual practices of the radical Hussites. It is also possible that the Hussite factions residing in the Czech (then Bohemian) town of Tábor utilized opium as an entheogen …

This Article explores the historical, political, and socio-legal dimensions of the introduction and evolution of jury trials in the Republic of Georgia, framed through the dual lenses of legal pluralism and legal transplantation. It examines Georgia’s historical practices of peer judgment, its adoption of jury trials in the early 20th century, the abolition of jury trials under Soviet rule, and their revival after constitutional reforms in 2004. The study incorporates insights from legal pluralism theory, which emphasizes the influence of indigenous legal traditions and the dynamic interplay of official and unofficial laws. The Article describes the significant role of U.S. …

Calculated Self-Presentation: Japan At Twentieth Century American World’S Fairs, Mary Rose Comerford
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
World’s fairs are places of innovation, culture, and technology. They are places where visitors go to be wowed by the innovations of other countries, but do they have a deeper meaning? In this thesis I will argue that world’s fairs serve a purpose beyond the sharing of culture and innovation. They allow national commissions to control the narrative of their country through a careful curation of displays that meet the objectives of their government. Countries’ objectives at world’s fairs change all the time, depending on their position in the world and what serves their best interest. The fairs themselves each …

How Many Supreme Court Justices Can Stand On The Point Of A Needle? Originalist Scholarship, Political Neutrality, And Other Constitutional Nonsense, Stephen M. Feldman
Washington and Lee Journal of Civil Rights and Social Justice
In the 1935 article, "Transcendental Nonsense and the Functional Approach," Felix Cohen compared formalist legal reasoning, as practiced by traditional legal scholars and Lochner-era Supreme Court justices, to the philosophical musings of scholastic theologians. Unconnected to empirical reality, formalist legal reasoning was as nonsensical as a disquisition on “‘[h]ow many angels can stand on the point of a needle?’” Nowadays, originalist scholars are similarly engaged in nonsense. These scholars defend, refine, and practice originalist methods of constitutional interpretation as if the Supreme Court justices truly decided cases in accordance with the theory. Regardless, the justices—even the avowed originalists—do not consistently …

From Ruins To Rival: How The Japanese Economic Miracle Forged A Global Power, Elizabeth Rips
From Ruins To Rival: How The Japanese Economic Miracle Forged A Global Power, Elizabeth Rips
The Dialogue
The Japanese Economic Miracle (1950-1975) represents one of the most sustained periods of rapid economic growth in modern history. This paper examines the extent to which political policies contributed to Japan’s transformation into a leading global industrial power during the postwar era. While some historians emphasize the decisive role of U.S. occupation reforms and American economic support, this paper argues that Japan’s rise resulted from the interaction of multiple factors. Focusing on political institutions such as the Yoshida Doctrine, the dissolution of zaibatsu’s, and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the paper analyzes how state-led industrial policy fostered …
