Sustained focus is essential for effective goal-directed behavior. Yet, as sustained attention tasks drag on, the occurrence of mind wandering increases. Recent studies suggest that such increases in mind wandering correspond with increases in response time variability and declines in accuracy with greater time-on-task. Relatively little is known about how large-scale brain dynamics unfold over similar timescales. EEG microstates offer a way to characterize these dynamics by capturing brief, quasi-stable topographical patterns that index distinct large-scale neural configurations. Prior work has shown that microstate C corresponds with episodes of mind wandering, whereas microstate E corresponds with task-focused periods. The present …

Teachers are uniquely positioned to promote racial and immigration justice in schools. This study draws on interviews with a U.S. educator sample (N = 26; 50% ethnoracially minoritized; 42.3% pre-K or elementary, 15.4% middle school, 34.6% high school) from a needs assessment for a public scholarship effort aimed at providing resources to advance anti-racism and anti-xenophobia. Combining a rigorous and accelerated data reduction (RADaR) method and reflexive thematic analysis, we developed 8 themes: 5 pertaining to substantive issues, 2 to format concerns, and 1 integrating both substance and format issues. Our expansive approach in the present study, including educators from …

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) patients with minoritized racial/ethnic backgrounds report similar outcomes as White patients but may report weaker alliances and less frequent CBT skill use. Given its transdiagnostic utility, we tested how racial/ethnic background impacted treatment outcomes, the alliance, and therapy skill use in the Unified Protocol (UP). Participants (N = 70, Mage = 33.7, 67% female, 74% White) with emotional disorders completed six sessions of core UP modules. Participants rated their past-week anxiety, depression, and skill use before each session and the strength of the alliance after each session. We tested whether racial/ethnic background moderated the slopes of …

Designing Narrative-Based Ai Assistance For Sensemaking In Collaborative Environments: Case Studies In Education And Dementia Care, Dylan Edward Moore

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

This thesis addresses a gap in the human-computer interaction literature regarding the design, development, and evaluation of narrative-based AI assistance for collaborative, complex problem solving. I explore this design space through three case studies across the domains of education and dementia care. This work encompasses multi-year industry partnerships and longitudinal fieldwork, user-centered design, dataset curation, model training, and system evaluation.

Specifically, the first case study considers a story-based web platform for teaching AI literacy through peer-generated, personalized narrative scaffolding. Learners on the platform showed significant knowledge gains and other learning-related outcomes. To describe the novel design of this system, I …

Dred Scott By Any Other Name: The New War Over Abortion And The Right To Travel After Dobbs, Wesley Mark Kimler Jan 2026

Dred Scott By Any Other Name: The New War Over Abortion And The Right To Travel After Dobbs, Wesley Mark Kimler

SPARK Symposium Presentations

After the decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford and the Fugitive Slave Acts, slave states could effectively undermine the laws of free Northern states and deny African Americans the constitutional right to travel. Today, the denial of that right is faced by a different group. Where once the right to travel was denied to African Americans, it is now being denied to women and pregnant people. In addition to banning abortion, several states have enacted so-called "abortion trafficking" laws which make it a crime to assist a minor in procuring an abortion, even if that abortion is to take place …

Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price Jan 2026

Lifestyle Factors' Effect On Political And Religious Behavior, Madison A. Price

SPARK Symposium Presentations

There is a general understanding of an individuals’ political/religious beliefs when you analyze predictors like support of same sex marriage or views on abortion, but there is not a ton of research on how everyday lifestyle factors might affect how someone aligns themselves politically or religiously. Researchers have begun to expand the horizons of political and religious research by investigating how income, health, and politics affect religion (Francis-Tan & Tian, 2022), but there is a need to expand into more specific lifestyle factors. Which brings reason to question a few things: what lifestyle and demographic factors predict how religious someone …

Reliability Of Staged Maximal Aerobic Capacity Protocol Using A Combined Upper- And Lower-Body Air-Braked Ergometer, Jack J. Livingston

Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) is widely recognized as the preeminent measure of aerobic capacity and is typically assessed using graded exercise testing (GXT). This study examined the test–retest reliability of VO₂peak and associated physiological responses during a staged GXT performed on a combined upper- and lower-body air-braked ergometer. Fifteen recreationally active adults (9 males, 6 females; age: 26.9 ± 7.2 years; body mass: 75.1 ± 11.0 kg) completed one familiarization session and two trials separated by ≥72 hours. Participants performed a staged GXT (40 RPM start, +3 RPM every 3 min to exhaustion) on a combined upper- and lower-body air-braked …

The Two-Step Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Is Associated With Excellent Engraftment, Improved Survival And Low Nonrelapse Mortality In Patients With Myelofibrosis, Xia Bi, Shaik Rashid, Joanne Filicko-O'Hara, Joseph Van Galen, William O'Hara, John L. Wagner, Dolores Grosso, Neal Flomenberg, Usama Gergis

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Myelofibrosis is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder primarily affecting older adults, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) remains the only curative treatment option. However, HSCT for myelofibrosis presents significant challenges, including high nonrelapse mortality (NRM) and an increased risk of graft failure. In this 20-year retrospective study, we evaluated outcomes for 32 myelofibrosis patients who underwent HSCT at our institution, with particular focus on a two-step transplant approach designed to optimize T-cell dosing by separating the lymphoid and myeloid graft components, with cyclophosphamide administered after the lymphoid infusion and before infusion of CD34-selected stem cells. Eighteen patients underwent transplantation using …

Evaluating The Impact Of Tennessee House Bill 2327 & Senate Bill 2055, Kya Cousino, Emily Redford, Leah M. Vetters

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental delays often require consistent therapeutic interventions such as speech therapy, occupational therapy (OT), or applied behavior analysis (ABA) in order to meaningfully access their education (Treatment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2024). However, service shortages, scheduling barriers, and restrictions on outside providers during the school day frequently create gaps in care. As a result, families may be forced to choose between their child’s educational attendance and the continuity of medically or developmentally necessary services.

House Bill 2327 and corresponding Senate Bill 2055 seek to address this barrier by requiring Local Education …

Chemotherapy Exposure Alters Heart Rate In Daphnia Magna: A Rapid Model For Evaluating Cardiotoxicity, Leland B. Wythoff, Andrea Florian Jan 2026

Chemotherapy Exposure Alters Heart Rate In Daphnia Magna: A Rapid Model For Evaluating Cardiotoxicity, Leland B. Wythoff, Andrea Florian

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Chemotherapy agents such as 5-Fluorouracil and Oxaliplatin are commonly employed in the management of various types of cancer. However, they have been implicated as causative factors of various side effects related to the heart. Drug-induced cardiotoxicity in rapid preclinical models could be employed as an effective tool for the identification of adverse effects. Daphnia magna is a small aquatic organism that is frequently employed in toxicological tests due to its transparent body that allows direct observation of physiological activities such as heart rates.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of various concentrations of 5-Fluorouracil and Oxaliplatin …

Unsafe2safe: Controllable Image Anonymization For Downstream Utility, Minh Dinh Jan 2026

Unsafe2safe: Controllable Image Anonymization For Downstream Utility, Minh Dinh

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Large-scale image datasets frequently contain identifiable or sensitive content, raising privacy risks when training models that may memorize and leak such information. We present Unsafe2Safe, a fully automated pipeline that detects privacy-prone images and rewrites only their sensitive regions using multimodally guided diffusion editing. Unsafe2Safe operates in two stages. Stage 1 uses a vision--language model to (i) inspect images for privacy risks, (ii) generate paired private and public captions that respectively include and omit sensitive attributes, and (iii) prompt a large language model to produce structured, identity-neutral edit instructions conditioned on the public caption. Stage 2 employs instruction-driven diffusion editors …

Anti-Domestic Violence In China: Re-Accessing The Public Value Of Individual Experience, Xiaoran Tang Jan 2026

Anti-Domestic Violence In China: Re-Accessing The Public Value Of Individual Experience, Xiaoran Tang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In December 2019, Kim Lee, a symbolic figure in China’s anti-domestic violence (ADV) movement, publicly stated on the Chinese social media platform Weibo that she forgave her ex-husband Li Yang, sparking widespread controversy.

Drawing on Joan W. Scott’s method of examining experience, this study analyzes Kim’s case within the broader historical development of China’s ADV movement. It traces how Kim’s personal experiences and public images were continuously constructed, interpreted, and reshaped across different stages of the movement. This study finds that Kim’s experiences became public knowledge through the social, legal, and institutional processes that framed her as a domestic violence …

Lens: Llm-Enabled Narrative Synthesis For Mental Health By Aligning Multimodal Sensing With Language Models, Wenxuan Xu Jan 2026

Lens: Llm-Enabled Narrative Synthesis For Mental Health By Aligning Multimodal Sensing With Language Models, Wenxuan Xu

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Multimodal health sensing offers rich behavioral signals for assessing mental health, yet translating these numerical time-series measurements into natural language remains challenging. Current LLMs cannot natively ingest long-duration sensor streams, and paired sensor–text datasets are scarce. To address these challenges, we introduce LENS, a framework that aligns multimodal sensing data with language models to generate clinically grounded mental-health narratives. LENS first constructs a large-scale dataset by transforming Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) responses related to depression and anxiety symptoms into natural-language descriptions, yielding over 100,000 sensor–text QA pairs from 258 participants. To enable native time-series integration, we train a patch-level encoder …

Clinical And Community-Based Recovery Models: The Focus On How They Can Be Better Together, Alicia Wilder Jan 2026

Clinical And Community-Based Recovery Models: The Focus On How They Can Be Better Together, Alicia Wilder

Graduate Research Papers

Two of the main pathways for individuals to access recovery services are clinical and community-based. The clinical model focuses on medical stabilization and treatment, followed by community-based care that provides peer-driven support and sustainability through connection. The purpose is to examine how recovery models aim to support those in recovery and pinpoint the ways they can integrate medical and social systems to meet client needs. Comparing the two will allow us to understand how each model supports sustained recovery and overall well-being. The question that will be researched in this study is: How do acute clinical treatment and community- based …

Hardwiring Hercules?, Courtney M. Cox Jan 2026

Hardwiring Hercules?, Courtney M. Cox

Faculty Scholarship

It is time to reorient the debate over the right to a human decision. Within that debate, the strongest arguments in favor of human decisionmakers are Arguments from Explanation: AI technology is increasingly and necessarily opaque, and so machines should not replace human decisionmakers because machines cannot give the required explanations. Or so the humanist argument goes. Meanwhile, machinists argue that most humanist principles have been deflated by the Better Decision Argument, which reframes such principles as grounding not a right to a human decision, but merely to a “better” decision— whether by human or machine.

This Article turns that …

Should Statutory Interpretation And Contract Interpretation Be Harmonized?, Ethan J. Leib Jan 2026

Should Statutory Interpretation And Contract Interpretation Be Harmonized?, Ethan J. Leib

Faculty Scholarship

This paper develops four case studies about how states have harmonized or separated their statutory interpretation regimes and their contract interpretation regimes.  After exploring the choices of Texas, Alaska, New York, and Alabama—all of which take different approaches to their lumping or splitting—the paper seeks to make state courts more aware of what their options are; to help states think about whether their commitments to formalism or contextualism make sense to apply in both domains; and to help them evaluate their meta-choices about whether to bring their interpretive regimes closer together or further apart.

Memory And Authority Of Failed Constitutional Amendments, Julie C. Suk Jan 2026

Memory And Authority Of Failed Constitutional Amendments, Julie C. Suk

Faculty Scholarship

When the original public meaning of any constitutional provision is enforced, guarantees of rights that were adopted before women were included in legal rights may appear illegitimate and inadequate for a 21st-century democracy. Originalists have long pointed to Article V amendment as the legitimate path to changing the Constitution. Jack Balkin’s Memory and Authority points to the importance of expanding American constitutional memory if women and minorities are to be included in the transhistorical “We the People.” This Essay illustrates how the memory and authority of failed constitutional amendments can challenge originalists’ reliance on amendment as the path to democratically …

Pragmatic Conceptualism, Public Nuisance, And The American Opioid Litigation, Benjamin C. Zipursky Jan 2026

Pragmatic Conceptualism, Public Nuisance, And The American Opioid Litigation, Benjamin C. Zipursky

Faculty Scholarship

Public nuisance as a part of American tort law has been as high profile in the first decades of this century as products liability law was in the last several decades of the 20th century.  The American opioid litigation over the past decades is a spectacular example, filling headlines and generating billions of dollars of settlements.  There is a plausible argument, however, that the doctrinal core of the opioid litigation is meritless because there simply is no “interference with public right” as required by public nuisance law.  The first aim of the article is to articulate and assess that argument. …

Distal Adding-On As A Complication Of Posterior Spinal Fusion In Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Scoping Review Of Contemporary Evidence, Hussein Hashem, Hassan Abou Adma, Joseph Hayek, Ali Rezazadeh Shirazi, Karim Gaber, Waleed Kishta

Western Journal of Orthopaedics

Distal adding-on (DAO) is a complication of spinal fusion characterized by postoperative deformity progression distal to the fusion construct. DAO after posterior spinal fusion for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is variably defined and inconsistently managed. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on DAO detection, management, and outcomes. A PRISMA-ScR–guided search identified relevant studies. Thirty-one studies (2,998 patients; median follow-up, 30 months) met inclusion criteria. Reported DAO incidence ranged from 3.5% to 62.5%, reflecting heterogeneity in definitions, patient factors, surgical constructs, and follow-up duration. Revision surgery was infrequent and typically delayed. When performed, it was most often prompted by progressive coronal decompensation …
