Garnet, a silicate mineral, was investigated as a replacement for the TiO2-based compound in sunscreen formulations. Samples containing garnet were evaluated for color shade, viscosity, sun protection factor (SPF), and water resistance. Substituting the TiO2-based compound with garnet reduced both viscosity and SPF but markedly enhanced water resistance. This improvement is attributed to the physical reinforcement provided by garnet particles, which strengthen the sunscreen film and reduce wash-off under water exposure. Garnet incorporation also altered the product’s appearance from white to a darker brownish-beige tone, improving visual compatibility with a wider range of skin tones.

Nowadays, water pollution by heavy metal Pb(II) is a significant issue in many countries, including Indonesia. To overcome this problem, a suitable and efficient waste treatment method is necessary. Therefore, in this work, Fe3O4/AC/TiO2 nanocomposite modified with chitosan (CS) for the treatment of Pb (II) waste were investigated. CS was used due to its OH and NH2 functional groups, which enable the formation of a new hybrid nanocomposite that can be used repeatedly. To reduce production costs, environmentally friendly, raw natural materials, such as iron sand, coconut shells, and shrimp shells, were employed. The XRD characterization results indicate that the …

Synergistic Adsorption–Photocatalysis Of Activated Carbon/Titanium Dioxide Composite Derived From Rice Husk Ash Under Ultraviolet-C Irradiation, Bang-Tam Thi Dao, Do Trung Nguyen, Nhien Hon Le, Chi-Nhan Ha-Thuc
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Rice husk ash (RHA), an abundant biomass residue, was employed as a sustainable precursor for synthesizing activated carbon (AC) and its TiO2-based photocatalyst composite. AC was produced via ultrasonication-assisted NaOH activation of KOH-impregnated biochar, yielding a highly porous material with a large surface area. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized from titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and subsequently immobilized onto AC to form the AC/TiO2 composite. Structural and textural analyses (XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM–EDS) confirmed the presence of anatase TiO2 uniformly distributed within the AC framework while preserving its porous architecture. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was assessed using Basic Blue …

Marine and freshwater biotoxins threaten public health and seafood safety due to their tendency to accumulate in fish and shellfish. This systematic literature review summarises findings from 51 peer-reviewed studies published between 2004 and 2025 that focus on nanoparticle-enhanced lateral flow immunoassays (LFIAs) for toxin detection. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were by far the most used label, employed in ∼75 % of studies, which consistently delivered the lowest limits of detection (LODs) as low as 0.03 ng/ml for okadaic acid detection. Despite increasing concerns over the co-occurrence of multiple toxins, ∼88 % of the studies were based on single-analyte detection, only …

Anthocyanins are valuable dietary elements with biological functions and health-promoting effects. However, there are technological barriers to their use in the food industry, primarily due to their poor stability and susceptibility to environmental factors, such as oxygen, temperature, pH, and light, which can significantly affect the physicochemical characteristics of the final food products. In this study, the microencapsulation of an anthocyanin extract from sohiong fruits was performed using a laminar jet flow vibration nozzle, with calcium chloride as a hardening agent and sodium alginate as a polymer. To produce calcium-alginate microbeads with a high anthocyanin content and favourable morphological characteristics, …

Ham processing generates significant volumes of brine, a saline wastewater with untapped potential. This study compared three protein recovery methods: direct centrifugation, moderate heat treatment (75 °C), and a combined pH-shift-mild heat (PSMH) approach (65 °C). Both the PSMH method and moderate heat precipitation produced protein concentrates with the highest initial protein contents (62.15%–62.81%), which increased to 91.65%–95.59% purity after desalting, with NaCl levels reduced to <1.5%. Amino acid analysis revealed that PSMH-derived proteins had the highest total amino acid content (96.58 g/100 g). Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirmed improved recovery of muscle proteins, while Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that moderate heat treatment reduced the α-helix/β-sheet ratio. Proteins recovered using PSMH exhibited the highest water and fat binding capacities and maintained solubility across a broad pH range. They also exhibited strong foaming ability, although they showed slightly lower foam stability than proteins recovered by other methods, and they demonstrated emulsifying properties that were optimal under mildly alkaline conditions. Overall, PSMH presents a sustainable and efficient strategy for recovering functional proteins from ham brine for use in food and feed applications.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by persistent memory impairment and complex molecular and cellular pathological changes in the brain. Current treatments, including acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, only help with symptoms for a short time and do not stop the disease from getting worse. This is mainly because these drugs do not reach the brain well and are quickly removed from the body. The blood–brain barrier (BBB) restricts the entry of most drugs into the central nervous system; therefore, new methods of drug delivery are needed. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems (NTDDS) are widely studied as a potential …

Effective cleaning and sanitation are essential in cheese manufacturing to control microbial contamination and prevent biofilm formation. A multi-step approach was undertaken to assess microbial persistence and cleaning-in-place (CIP) strategies at an industrial Cheddar cheese facility with a production capacity of ∼40,000 tonnes. Pre- and post-CIP environmental swabs were analysed using plate counts and high-throughput (16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun) sequencing to identify microbial hotspots. Traditional CIP was broadly effective, however residual contamination persisted in critical zones such as the Alfomatic weir, curd distribution tank (CDT), and block formers. Industrial-scale trials comparing caustic and acid-based CIP with an enzymatic alternative …

Human-Centered Evaluation Of Control And Perception Interface Factors In A Teleoperational Cutting Task, Inês F. Ramos, Keerthi Sagar, Philip Long, Maria Chiara Leva, Ernesto Damiani, Gabriele Gianini
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Despite significant advances in teleoperated systems, optimal human performance remains a challenging task due to one key aspect, i.e. reduced situational awareness. Active telepresence is one of the major contributing factors affecting operator’s situational awareness. Providing the user with multiple perspectives of the remote environment can be very beneficial, although it may also introduce challenges in maintaining effective control. Prior work has largely examined discrete manipulation tasks using single-modality assessments, whereas this study applies a multimodal neuroergonomic approach to a continuous precision-cutting task, providing first insights into control–view alignment and multi-camera perception effects. In this work, we focus on two …

Data from psychophysiological measures can offer new insight into control room operators’ behaviour, cognition, and mental workload status. This is particularly helpful when assessing capacity to respond to critical plant conditions such as alarm response scenarios. However, wearable tools such as eye tracking and electroencephalography caps can be perceived as intrusive and unsuitable for daily operations. Therefore, this article examines the potential of using real-time data from process and operator-system interactions during abnormal scenarios, recorded and retrieved from the distributed control system’s historian or process log, to provide insight into operator behaviour and predict their response outcomes without intruding on …

BackgroundInorganic nanoparticles (NPs) are capable of interacting with bacteria. Due to this interaction, the cell exterior and interior of bacteria maybe altered. As a result, bacterial growth inhibition might occur due to the antimicrobial properties exerted by inorganic nanoparticles. Inorganic nanomaterials with antimicrobial activity have been discussed within the literature under the food, pharmaceutical, biomedicine and agriculture sectors. Currently, nanoparticle-mediated control of plant bacterial pathogens is advancing in agriculture.AimThis review aims to highlight the potential of bacteria-inorganic nanoparticle systems in agriculture and how they may yield agricultural benefits beyond antimicrobial activity.MethodsWe analysed literature published between 2020 and 2024 on how …

Chakhao is an indigenous aromatic black rice variety from Manipur, India, valued for its distinctive flavor, high anthocyanin content, and associated health benefits. Despite its geographical indication status, limited information exists on how regional cultivation conditions influence its compositional attributes. This study characterizes and compares the nutritional composition, mineral content, volatile profile, and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) composition of Chakhao sourced from five major cultivation regions in Manipur. Proximate analysis quantified moisture, protein, ash, fiber, fat, and carbohydrate content, whereas GC-MS/MS and ICP-MS were employed to profile volatile compounds, FAMEs, and mineral elements. Carbohydrates were the predominant macronutrient (73.88%–74.21%), …

Conventional wastewater treatment performs reliably against routine contaminants but remains inconsistent for complex industrial effluents and for emerging pollutants such as pharmaceutical residues, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and micro/nano plastics. Engineered nanomaterials and artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) have each been reviewed extensively, but predominantly in isolation. The present review is distinguished from existing reviews in three specific respects. First, the nanomaterial-AI interface is treated as the unit of analysis rather than the two fields being surveyed in parallel: AI-guided material selection, dosing and pH control, membrane fouling prediction, nano sensor-assisted monitoring and regeneration scheduling are examined together. Second, evidence …

Industrialization and urbanization have led to the constant discharge of hazardous pollutants such as effluents, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, which pose a grave threat to ecological balance and human beings' well-being. Traditional physiochemical techniques for the treatment of environmental pollutants are energy-intensive, expensive, and inefficient in extreme environments. Hence, there is a need to explore alternative strategies to address the above problems. Thermophiles are microorganisms that grow in high temperatures, and they have recently been regarded as viable sources for bioremediation due to their metabolic resilience, enzyme stability, and resistance to industrial conditions. The current paper presents an in-depth literature …

Kombucha fermentation is a complex process influenced by many different process parameters and the dynamics of the microorganisms present. Since no universally established standards exist for large-scale production of kombucha, manufacturers still need to acquire the knowledge to establish controllable and reproducible processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which the kombucha fermentation process can be influenced by varying the oxygenation regime and the initial pH value. For this purpose, co-culture fermentations with the yeast Zygosaccharomyces bailii and the acetic acid bacterium Komagataeibacter hansenii were carried out under defined conditions, varying the type and intensity …

The conventional Hummers method for graphene production requires large quantities of hazardous chemicals, causing environmental impacts and sustainability concerns. This study investigated mangosteen-peel extract as a natural alternative in liquid phase exfoliation of graphite, exploiting the structural similarity between condensed tannins and graphite, which enables π−π interactions. Four exfoliation processes were studied: shear force via a homogenizer (9,500 rpm and 14,000 rpm for 41 min), sonication using an ultrasound bath (200 W and 400 kHz) for 2 h and 3 h at 50℃ and their sequential combinations. The results confirmed successful graphite exfoliation yielding samples with I2D/IG ratios of 0.51 …
