Research In Progress. Why Physiology Feels Hard: Supporting The Transition To Self-Directed Learning In Post-Secondary Physiology, Jaelyn Zoe Rohrbaugh, Mark Paternostro
Research In Progress. Why Physiology Feels Hard: Supporting The Transition To Self-Directed Learning In Post-Secondary Physiology, Jaelyn Zoe Rohrbaugh, Mark Paternostro
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
Physiology is widely recognized as one of the most challenging courses for STEM students. Contributing factors include the discipline’s inherent complexity, instructional methods, and student preparedness, with both faculty and students identifying the nature of the discipline as the primary challenge. Many undergraduates enter college having experienced predominantly teacher-directed, pedagogical instruction, whereas success in college-level physiology requires self-directed, andragogical learning strategies. We hypothesize that students’ difficulties arise more from a lack of self-directed learning skills than from content complexity alone. To investigate this, we administered an anonymous survey to 340 students spanning freshman to professional levels, achieving a 93% completion …
Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour
Choose Your Own Adventure: A Different Course Structure, Jacquelyn Kate Seymour
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
As commonly accepted in upper-level courses, course work should appeal to higher levels of Bloom’s taxonomy such as analyze, evaluate, and create (Halupa, 2021). However, course design choices can limit a student’s potential in reaching these higher levels of learning when a preselected number of topics and assignment types are provided by the instructor (Halupa, 2021). Additionally, not all students will thrive with instructor selected assignment design. Instead, instructors can offer a “choose your own adventure” approach to course designs (Sutherland, 2023; Yetter, 2022). Specifically, this has taken the form of allowing students to choose their own assignments within my …

Bringing Real Research Into Large-Enrollment Biology Labs, Katrina Klugh Stewart, Mathilda Corbett
2026 Scholarly Teaching Conference: Poster Session Papers
Hundreds of WVU students in a large-enrollment introductory biology laboratory course (BIOL 115L) participated in an authentic research experience through the Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment (PARE) Project. This national crowdsourced research initiative engages students in generating environmental DNA data to identify potential antibiotic resistance hotspots. For the Fall 2025 semester, we designed a multi-week lab module to implement a cost-effective, scalable version of the PARE model suitable for a course serving approximately 900 students annually.
The three-week sequence integrates core scientific practices, including hypothesis generation, field sampling, DNA extraction, PCR amplification of antibiotic resistance genes, gel electrophoresis, …

Empowering Staff And Caregiver Through Occupational Therapy Education And Leadership At Hope Therapy Center, Natalie K. Antle
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Posters
My doctoral capstone was completed with Hope Therapy Center (HTC), a pediatric clinic in Da Nang, Vietnam that is part of a Christian-based nonprofit organization providing free therapy services to children with disabilities and their families. This project focused on the ACOTE areas of education and leadership. It was informed by a previous experience at HTC where I observed a need for additional staff education, caregiver support, and sustainable occupational therapy resources. Those observations guided the development of my capstone and helped ensure the project addressed the clinic's greatest needs. The purpose of this capstone was to strengthen staff knowledge of …
Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry
Coming To America: How Consular Absolutism Leads To Discrimination, Justina Fakhry
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
This Note critiques a pervasive mode of discrimination that goes unchecked. Consular absolutism allows consular immigration officers to make discriminatory visa decisions, which are not subject to review. This Note begins with a discussion of the case law that developed the concept of consular absolutism, primarily by analyzing the Supreme Court’s gloss on the plenary power of the federal government in the realm of immigration. This Note then discusses how courts have built upon the plenary power doctrine to establish consular absolutism.
This Note suggests that Congress should amend the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to grant a private right …
Paving The Way For Inclusion By Way Of Exclusion From Standardized Testing, Olivia R. Leon
Paving The Way For Inclusion By Way Of Exclusion From Standardized Testing, Olivia R. Leon
University of Florida Journal of Law & Public Policy
Legislation protecting the rights of disabled students has continuously evolved over time, with each revision containing a similar goal of promoting the inclusion of disabled students within the public education system. However, despite numerous revisions and evolutions, the finish line of inclusivity has yet to effectively be reached.
This Article discusses legislation aimed at protecting the educational rights of disabled students, and how standardized testing provisions within said legislation may be counterintuitively hindering progress towards inclusivity. More specifically, this Article dives into Every Student Succeeds Act and its consequentially exclusory standardized testing provisions, focusing on the Act’s ninety-five percent participation …

Techniques For Inclusive College Mathematics Classrooms, Christopher Anderson Davis, Josh Hiller, Anil Venkatesh
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Creating a welcoming and inclusive mathematics classroom is an important responsibility for all college mathematics faculty. But where do we begin? In this paper we present several techniques based on White’s (2024) building inclusive classrooms strategies framework, which the authors have found to be successful in making their own classrooms more inclusive. The techniques include the inclusion of contemporary diverse voices, exploring the history of applications of mathematical concepts, elevating the diverse intellectual history of mathematics, bringing diverse guest speakers into the classroom, and mentoring students as they engage in doing research. For each strategy we provide narrative comments based …
The Role Of Small Extracellular Vesicles In Modulating Radiation Resistance In H3k27m-Pediatric Diffuse Midline Glioma, Viral Oza
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Pediatric diffuse midline gliomas with H3K27M alteration (H3K27M-pDMG) are the leading cause of pediatric brain tumor-associated deaths. All H3K27M-pDMG are initially treated with fractionated radiotherapy, the standard of care, and most children succumb to their disease within two years of diagnosis. There are no universally effective chemotherapies and full resection is impossible due to the diffuse nature of the tumor and sensitive location. There has not been a significant clinical advancement in more than 40 years.
Tumors become completely resistant to radiation within the first six months of treatment. The mechanism of radiation resistance is unknown but is thought to …
The Apathy Economy: Patents, Advertising, And Consumer Indifference, Gavin J. Milczarek-Desai, Derek E. Bambauer
The Apathy Economy: Patents, Advertising, And Consumer Indifference, Gavin J. Milczarek-Desai, Derek E. Bambauer
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Patents function as signals as well as rights to exclude. They inform competitors, investors, employees, and consumers about the invention and its owner. How this information affects consumers is not well understood. Existing studies disagree about how advertising a product or service as patented, or patent pending, affects the price consumers will pay. This Article offers the first major empirical study of that question andfinds that consumers behave with surprising rationality: they will not pay any price premium for a patented product. A product's patent status conveys little information about whether it is superior to competing offerings. The results hold …

Diabetes mellitus and food insecurity contribute to poor health outcomes among underserved adults participating in the Healthy Food Rx program at the Stockton Emergency Food Bank in South Stockton, California. Limited access to culturally relevant diabetes education and ongoing self-management resources may hinder effective diabetes management among food-insecure adults. This quality improvement project evaluated a four-week culturally responsive diabetes education program consisting of weekly education sessions, hands-on blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring, and a QR code-enabled Linktree resource platform. The intervention included weekly diabetes education sessions, hands-on monitoring of blood pressure and blood glucose, and access to bilingual digital …

Patient-Centered Education In Fall Risk And Prevention Decreases The Number Of Falls On The Orthopedic Unit, Kaitlyn Chan, Amparo Guzman Garcia, Tran Huynh
ELMSN E-Portfolio. A collection of Scholarly and Creative Works
Inpatient falls are a major patient safety concern, particularly in orthopedic units where mobility limitations, comorbidities, and postoperative factors elevate risk and contribute to preventable injury, longer hospital stays, and increased costs. At Sutter Medical Center Sacramento’s orthopedic unit, an annual rate of 16 falls and persistent gaps in patient and staff education highlight the need for a targeted quality improvement initiative despite use of an EPIC predictive fall-risk model. Guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, this project implements a comprehensive fall-prevention education program modeled on the Fall T.I.P.S. toolkit, including a standardized bedside brochure, visual cues (wristbands, door signage, bedside …

Guidebook For Artificial Intelligence Integration Into The University Environment, Mark J. Uline, Tarek Shazly, Grace Cosby
Guidebook For Artificial Intelligence Integration Into The University Environment, Mark J. Uline, Tarek Shazly, Grace Cosby
Reports
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not a peripheral or speculative technology in the university setting, it is rather a rapidly evolving transformational force that will reshape research, teaching, and administrative operations. Recent systematic reviews conclude that generative AI tools are already being widely used by students and instructors and can positively affect learning outcomes and academic performance when thoughtfully integrated into instruction (Hon, 2025; Qian, 2025).
At the same time, case studies warn that unmanaged or poorly governed AI use can undermine academic integrity, exacerbate inequities, and create new institutional risks (Mangundu, 2025; Şen et al., 2026). AI adoption brings unparalleled …
