Impact Of Senescence On Breast Cancer Outcomes, Gracie Sous
Impact Of Senescence On Breast Cancer Outcomes, Gracie Sous
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Cellular senescence is a biological process in which damaged cells exit the cell cycle while remaining metabolically active and accumulating within tissues. Senescence plays a complex role in breast cancer progression, largely through the secretion of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) factors. These factors include a broad range of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and signaling molecules that can influence the tumor microenvironment.
Studies suggest that senescence may significantly promote cancer metastasis. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the genes involved in cancer progression and to improve understanding of how SASP is regulated, which is critical for improving breast cancer outcomes. The central …

At post-treatment, participants receiving GDH demonstrated significantly lower PROMIS GI Belly Pain T-scores compared to GH, F(1, …
Investigating The Interaction Of Gram-Positive Lactobacillus Species With Mucin In The Context Of Barrett's Esophagus, Ritisha Suresh
Investigating The Interaction Of Gram-Positive Lactobacillus Species With Mucin In The Context Of Barrett's Esophagus, Ritisha Suresh
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) can progress to the precancerous Barrett’s Esophagus (BE) condition, in which the normal esophageal squamous epithelium is replaced with a columnar epithelium containing goblet cells. Mucins, sticky substances, are secreted in response to bile acid exposure during reflux episodes to protect the esophageal epithelium. Goblet cells secrete these mucins, which can also scaffold microbial colonization. Probiotic Lactobacillus bacteria can use glycosidase enzymes to process mucin and metabolize them into their component sugars (glycans). This project aims to identify the role of the Lactobacillus-mucin interaction in BE, as glycan availability could confer an advantage to Lactobacillus …

Disassembly tasks in human–robot collaboration (HRC) environments present safety challenges due to hazardous materials, control system variability, and physically demanding operator tasks. To address these challenges, we propose an AI-augmented risk assessment framework integrating System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). This framework is implemented in four configurations: Term Frequency– Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF), Fine-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and RAG with a structured Knowledge Graph (KG) built from safety standards. The system supports real-time, standards-compliant safety reasoning by generating interpretable, context-specific recommendations. We evaluate these configurations across GPT-3.5 TURBO, GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and …

Earplugs are essential for hearing protection in noisy workplaces, but their effectiveness depends heavily on user comfort, which influences proper and consistent use. This study explores functional and acoustical comfort experienced by 173 workers across Canadian companies, each testing different ’disposable or reusable’ earplug models over seven weeks. Comfort is assessed using detailed questionnaires covering six subdimensions: ease of insertion and removal, noise protection, impact on work, and discomfort related to internal and external noise perception. Linear mixed-effects models are applied within a triad framework encompassing person-, earplug-, and environment-related characteristics in order to identify those with a significant influence …

Air quality management in greenhouses is critical to safeguarding plant health and occupational safety, yet conventional filtration methods often fall short in performance and sustainability. These enclosed environments are prone to the accumulation of bioaerosols, including fungi, bacteria, pollen, and dust particles, which can compromise crop productivity and pose health risks to workers. This review explores recent advancements in air filtration technologies for controlled environments such as greenhouses, where airborne particulate matter, bioaerosols, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present ongoing challenges. Special focus is given to the development of filtration media based on electrospun nanofibers, which offer high surface area, …

Études primaires
The use of automotive lifts requires mechanics to work under or near a multi-ton load. Based on consultation with stakeholders, pickups and vans appear to pose problems when raised using two-post above-ground lifts (2PAG lifts), the most common type of automotive lift in garages. The aim of this study is therefore to highlight the work activity performed by mechanics when raising pickups and vans on 2PAG lifts and to describe the factors they take into account to ensure vehicle stability. Data collection took place under actual conditions in five garages. A total of 108 lifting situations were filmed and analyzed, …

Drowsy driving contributes to roughly 20% of traffic fatalities, yet most detection systems rely on behavioral cues that appear only after impairment has set in. Here we ask whether first and second derivatives of heart rate variability (HRV) can detect pre-crash states earlier than conventional approaches. Twenty-five participants completed 49 driving simulator sessions while we recorded cardiac activity through capacitive ECG electrodes embedded in the seat backrest—a non-contact method that avoids the privacy concerns of camera-based monitoring. To prevent circular evaluation, ground truth labels were based solely on crash proximity rather than HRV-derived scores. The combined HRV feature set (conventional …

Hearing protection devices (HPDs) are widely used to mitigate the risks of noise-induced hearing loss in industrial environments. However, conventional HPDs can often hinder communication for workers with hearing loss. While those workers may rely on hearing aids in their daily lives, the potential benefits and associated risks of using such devices in noisy workplaces remain unexplored. This study evaluated the effects of different hearing aid signal processing algorithms on speech intelligibility and estimated noise exposure under industrial noise conditions to characterize the balance between communication and protection needed to develop solutions for workers with hearing loss. A digital hearing …

Études primaires
Decreased vigilance associated with drowsiness is a major cause of motor vehicle crashes, but its physiological characterization and detection remain difficult due to behavioral and environmental confounding factors. This study presents an original experimental framework combining a highly controlled sleep-deprivation protocol, repeated driving simulations, and a machine-learning-based heart rate variability (HRV) analysis to study the physiological and behavioral changes in vigilance during a prolonged period of wakefulness while driving. Twelve healthy young adults participated in a 30-h sleep-deprivation constant routine protocol that included driving simulations every two hours, with data collection: electrocardiography (ECG), subjective ratings of drowsiness, psychomotor vigilance test, …
Understanding The Potential Biogeochemical Effects Of Alternative Restoration Materials: A Study Of Basalt And Other Materials, Cadie L. Barnes
Understanding The Potential Biogeochemical Effects Of Alternative Restoration Materials: A Study Of Basalt And Other Materials, Cadie L. Barnes
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Concern over the effects of microplastics on estuarine ecosystems and public health has prompted many restoration practitioners to switch from plastic materials to more “natural” substrates. These natural (BESE-biopolymer, cement-jute structures) and non-plastic (basalt fiber) materials should not contain harmful substances; however, their chemical composition is unknown. Natural materials may degrade faster in subtropical environments and release nutrients into surrounding waters, which is concerning for eutrophic restoration areas. Basalt fiber bags, made from melted basalt rock spun into fibers, have not been evaluated for biogeochemical impacts within estuaries. To address this knowledge gap, two field experiments and two laboratory experiments …
Do Fair Schedules Matter? Work-Home Conflict And Justice In Emergency Medicine, Maresca J. Brand
Do Fair Schedules Matter? Work-Home Conflict And Justice In Emergency Medicine, Maresca J. Brand
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
Emergency physicians work in a high-demand environment requiring irregular, around-the-clock schedules, which can contribute to elevated work-home conflict and burnout. While previous research has focused on objective schedule characteristics such as length of shift or time of day worked, less attention has been given to how emergency physicians perceive the fairness of the scheduling process itself. Drawing on Work-Home Resources Theory and Personal Resource Allocation Theory, this study examines whether perceptions of schedule justice influence work-home conflict via schedule satisfaction. I propose that perceived fairness in schedule creation functions as a contextual resource that shapes whether a schedule is experienced …

Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent inflammatory disease that, despite its benign histology, displays several cancer-relevant features, including clonal expansion, somatic alteration-associated lesion evolution, tissue invasion, apoptosis resistance, immune evasion, angiogenesis, fibrosis, and metabolic adaptation. These features are particularly important in ovarian endometriosis, where recurrent hemorrhage, iron-driven oxidative stress, and chronic inflammatory remodeling may promote malignant transformation. This review examines endometriosis through an oncologic framework by integrating current evidence on disease initiation, clonal lesion evolution, and the peritoneal, ovarian, and deep-infiltrating microenvironments. We discuss how epithelial, stromal, immune, endothelial, mesothelial, and neural components cooperate to support lesion survival, dissemination, vascularization, fibrosis, …

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly aggressive malignancy, with cancer stem cells (CSCs) playing a critical role in metastasis, therapy resistance, and recurrence, thereby presenting significant treatment challenges. Emerging evidence suggests that normal embryonic and adult progenitor stem cells share common gene signatures with CSCs. However, the early pluripotency-associated factors and stemness programs that become aberrantly reactivated during oncogenic transformation remain poorly defined. Here, we identify SLC22A3/OCT3 (Solute Carrier Family 22 Member 3) as a reactivated embryonic-associated signature that regulates PC stemness. SLC22A3 is markedly upregulated in CSC-enriched populations, and its silencing in PC cells grown in both 2D cultures …

METHODS: Western blot analyses were used to assess the impacts of Rac1 inhibition on the components of the ATR/Chk1 cascade.
RESULTS: Here, we show that Rac1 inhibition disrupts ATR/Chk1 signaling by promoting degradation of Claspin, a key component of the fork protection complex needed for the Ser345-phosphorylation of Chk1 by ATR. In PDACs and normal pancreatic ductal cells, Rac1 inhibition (via inhibitors or siRNA) decreased Claspin protein levels without affecting its mRNA, reflecting a >3-fold reduction in Claspin's half-life. Claspin contains a …

Background: Short sleep and formula feeding during infancy are associated with increased risk of childhood obesity. Feeding practices and sleep arrangements vary during infancy and may also be dynamic, yet their impact on infant night sleep duration remains unclear. Understanding these relationships is crucial for formulating recommendations to support breastfeeding and address sleep concerns. Objective: We examined the association between feeding mode and parent-reported infant night sleep duration during the first postnatal year, while additionally evaluating night-weaning and bedsharing as contextual sleep-related practices. Methods: Infants in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area (n = 193) were followed up at 3, 8, 13, …

Introduction: We previously showed that baboon offspring born to mothers deprived of estrogen during the second half of gestation exhibited insulin resistance prior to and after the onset of puberty. Moreover, the size of skeletal muscle myofibers and the number of microvessels important for delivery of insulin/glucose to myofibers were lower in near-term fetuses deprived of estrogen during pregnancy, and myofiber capillarization remained reduced in post-pubertal offspring deprived of estrogen in utero. However, it remains to be determined whether skeletal muscle size is restored to normal in animals deprived of estrogen in utero after the onset of puberty/gonadal estrogen production. …

Introduction
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), continues to pose major health challenges despite effective vaccination efforts. The sustained occurrence of breakthrough infections and emerging variants of the virus highlights the need for additional therapeutic strategies. Given the anti-inflammatory role of the cannabinoid type 2 receptor (CB2R), we examined the effect of CB2R activation in SARS-CoV-2 spike protein subunit 1 (S1SP)-induced acute lung injury (ALI).
Methods
ALI was induced in mice by intratracheal (i.t.) administration of S1SP, followed by treatment with the CB2R agonist HU308 (5 mg/kg, intraperitoneal: i.p.) 1 h …
