The People’s Liberation Army in a New Era: Individuals, Ideas, and Influence assesses how China’s military has changed under Xi Jinping and the extent to which those changes reflect his leadership versus longer-term institutional trends. The volume addresses PLA modernization, organizational reform, political control, joint operations, deterrence, artificial intelligence, officer careers and training, Taiwan, China-Russia military exercises, military aid, and overseas security activities. It argues that while Xi has played a major role in shaping the PLA, many developments build on earlier reforms, enduring strategic priorities, and institutional practices.

Facevalue: Exploring Real-Time Self-View Overlays To Prompt Meaning-Oriented Self-Awareness In Remote Meetings, Gun Woo (Warren) Park, Anthony Tang, Fanny Chevalier
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In remote video meetings, visual non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions or head movements, are seen continuously but often only partially. This increases ambiguity compared to in-person settings and can cause misinterpretation or misalignment between intended and perceived meaning. Motivated by communication theories, we designed FaceValue, a technology probe that augments the self-view with private, real-time overlays. These overlays are subtle, suggestive prompts intended to help attendees reflect on how their cues might be interpreted by others. To invite personal interpretation, FaceValue avoids behavioral labeling and instead aims to support meaning-oriented self-awareness: recognizing when visible cues may unintentionally (mis)communicate intent. …

Objective Social prescribing is a pathway that connects individuals to non-clinical services. It supports and addresses social needs, such as those related to loneliness, housing instability and mental health. Social Prescribing Europe (SP-EU), a European Union funded project, seeks to co-create an adaptation of the social prescribing pathway based on the needs of the following target groups: LGBTIQ+ people, refugees and first-generation immigrants, older people living alone. This adapted social prescribing pathway will be tested in a pragmatic randomised controlled trial (RCT) in ten hubs, covering eight countries, across Europe. The aim of this process evaluation is to explore the …

BACKGROUND: Distributed Research Networks (DRNs) offer significant opportunities for collaborative multi-site research and have significantly advanced healthcare research based on clinical observational data. However, generating high-quality real-world evidence using fit-for-use data from multi-site studies faces important challenges, including biases associated with various types of heterogeneity within and across sites and data sharing difficulties. Over the last 10 years, Privacy-Preserving Distributed Algorithms (PDA) have been developed and utilized in numerous national and international real-world studies spanning diverse domains, from comparative effectiveness research, target trial emulation, to healthcare delivery, policy evaluation, and system performance assessment. Despite these advances, there remains a lack …

Microbiome studies often seek to determine how the absolute abundances of individual taxa change across biological conditions, yet sequencing read counts are sample-specific scaled representations of those abundances. Because sampling depth can differ across samples, fold changes calculated directly from sequencing read counts do not generally represent absolute-abundance fold changes. Normalization methods attempt to account for these between-sample differences in sampling depth, but their accuracy depends on the reference used. In particular, total-sum scaling uses all taxa as the reference and can introduce compositional bias. Reference-based methods instead rely on taxa that are stable across conditions, but contamination of the …

Genomic DNA encodes regulatory information that determines where, when, and to what extent genes are expressed. Theoretically, we should be able to identify these transcriptional "instructions" by examining genomic DNA sequence alone, yet this has remained challenging. Here we present the Vertebrate Regulatory MOdule Detector (VRMOD), a method that accurately predicts gene regulatory sequences using only the query genomic sequences. We applied VRMOD to 309 Ensembl genomes, generating a compendium of high-resolution, genome-position-fixed

Comparison Of Safety And Efficacy Of Lower-Intensity Versus Standard Unfractionated Heparin Infusion Nomograms For Extracranial Venous Thromboembolism In The Neurological Intensive Care Unit, Abdullah M Hakoun, Megha Gupta, Rajat Dhar, Mahta Mardani, Fatih Koc, Salah G Keyrouz
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Anticoagulation for acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the neurological intensive care unit is challenging because patients with acute brain injury or recent neurosurgery are at high risk for hemorrhagic complications. Unfractionated heparin infusions are commonly used, sometimes with lower activated partial thromboplastin time targets, but the safety and effectiveness of lower-intensity UFH nomograms remain poorly defined.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-center study of patients diagnosed with acute extracranial VTE, including deep venous thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism, between June 2018 and April 2024. Patients were grouped by treatment strategy: standard-intensity UFH targeting aPTT 60-100 s, lower-intensity UFH targeting aPTT …

Cracking The Code: Genotype-Phenotype Correlation Models In Sarcoglycanopathies, Leonela Luce, Conrad C Weihl, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
OBJECTIVE: Sarcoglycanopathies are among the most severe limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD), though milder presentations have been described. These diseases are primarily caused by missense variants, but the limited predictability of their effect on protein maturation, complex formation, and transport has hindered reliable genotype-phenotype correlations. This study aimed to establish accurate genotype-phenotype correlations for LGMDR3, LGMDR4, and LGMDR5.
METHODS: We analyzed the largest sarcoglycanopathy cohort to date (n = 541). Clinical data, including age at symptom onset and loss of ambulation, were collected and used to define phenotype severity. Predictive models were developed considering the impact of non-truncating variants on secondary …

BACKGROUND: Cancer immunology research has traditionally focused on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, but the role of the peripheral leukocytes remains understudied. Since tumor-infiltrating leukocytes are recruited from the blood, circulating immune profiles may provide prognostic insights obtainable before surgery, reflecting overall immune competence.
METHODS: We analyzed treatment-naïve blood samples from 134 stage I-III colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using a nested case-control design (33 recurrences, 45 deaths; median follow-up: 7.4 years). Circulating leukocyte subsets were estimated using methylation cytometry applied to genome-wide methylation profiles. Cox regression models estimated associations between leukocyte metrics and disease-free and overall survival, adjusting for clinical factors.

Parallel Failures: The Recurring Logic Of Interventionist Blunders From Ukraine To Mexico, Jerjes Aguirre Ochoa, Jorge Alejandro Vázquez Valdez
Parallel Failures: The Recurring Logic Of Interventionist Blunders From Ukraine To Mexico, Jerjes Aguirre Ochoa, Jorge Alejandro Vázquez Valdez
Journal of Strategic Security
This article argues that a potential US military intervention in Mexico, predicated on securitizing cartels as terrorist threats, would replicate strategic failures seen in interventions like Russia’s in Ukraine. Through a comparative framework of three variables—securitization, underestimated nationalist resistance, and neglected co-responsibility—the analysis shows how external force applied to structural crises provokes nationalist backlash. In Mexico, any intervention would reactivate historical memory of US interference, triggering broad institutional and social resistance. The core security challenge is not the cartels but Mexico's institutional fragility: systemic impunity, subnational governance deficits, and weak checks and balances. Therefore, militarized approaches are counterproductive. As a …

Prehospital emergency care requires clinicians to manage a vast array of medical and trauma incidents, including rare events such as obstetrics (i.e., childbirth) emergencies. Emergency births can have life-threatening complications such as neonatal respiratory distress potentially leading to cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Management of low-frequency high-risk (LFHR) events such as birthing and immediate neonatal care occurring outside the planned place of birth require expert clinical management. Underutilised skill and knowledge of LFHR events decay within 12-months of being taught. LFHR events are often overlooked for refresher training due to the low occurrence of such cases, putting LFHR patients at even greater risk …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Prevention is a central policy focus of contemporary health promotion, offering cost-effective strategies to reduce disease burden and improve population well-being. Despite this, Australia allocates a small proportion of its health budget to prevention, with funding models characterized by short-term cycles and competitive tendering. While the consequences for public health are well documented, the impact on the health promotion workforce remains underexplored. Workforce health and stability are critical for program delivery, ethical practice, continuity of relationships with communities, and the capacity to sustain long-term prevention efforts. This qualitative study examined the experience of 19 community-based health promotion practitioners in Western …

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common hereditary kidney disorder with an insidious onset and complex mechanisms, making early diagnosis challenging. Current diagnostic methods, including imaging and genetic testing, have limitations. Imaging detects cysts only once formed, and genetic testing is costly, labor-intensive, and unable to guarantee complete diagnostic accuracy or predict onset and progression. Metabolomics may offer an approach to uncover PKD mechanisms by detecting metabolic alterations that precede clinical manifestations, enabling identification of disease-specific biomarkers, and providing earlier and more practical detection than imaging or genetic testing. This review synthesizes existing metabolomics studies of human PKD and renal …

In November 2023, Italy signed a five-year agreement with Albania to transfer asylum seekers intercepted in international waters by Italian vessels to Italian-run detention centres in Albania for asylum processing and deportation. The agreement has been controversial and raises several human rights issues. This article examines these human rights concerns and argues that the agreement is degrading by design. Analysing policy documents, legal cases, speeches, international human rights and refugee law, and philosophical and legal scholarship on the concept of degrading treatment, this article argues that the cumulative effect of subjecting people to unnecessary suffering, discrimination, and dehumanisation creates a …

Background: Neoantigens are immunogenic molecules arising from patient-specific tumor mutations. Intismeran autogene (intismeran; formerly V940, mRNA-4157), an mRNA-based individualized neoantigen therapy (INT) encoding ≤34 neoantigens unique to each patient's tumor, is designed to promote an antitumor immune response. In early-phase studies, adjuvant intismeran plus pembrolizumab showed antitumor activity with solid tumors. Standard-of-care therapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors ≥4 cm includes platinum-based chemotherapy and pembrolizumab given after (adjuvant) or both before and after (perioperative) surgical resection. We describe study designs for the INTerpath-002 and INTerpath-009 studies evaluating the addition of intismeran to adjuvant pembrolizumab-based therapy in stage II-IIIB …

Purpose: Prolonged sitting and physical inactivity are key risk factors for trunk-muscle weakness, impaired balance, and low-back pain in overweight women. Although unstable-surface training is widely prescribed, head-to-head comparisons between TRX suspension and Swiss-ball exercise are limited. We compared these modalities for effects on core-muscle endurance and balance.
Methods: Thirty overweight, inactive women (30 ± 5 years; BMI 27.3 ± 1.6 kg·m⁻2) were block-randomized (1:1) to 8 weeks (3 sessions/week) of TRX or Swiss-ball training using five matched exercises at Borg RPE 13–15 on the 6–20 scale. Outcomes were trunk-extensor (Biering-Sørensen), trunk-flexor (60° curl-up), and trunk-lateral (side-bridge) endurance; static balance …

Background: Guideline-recommended clinical risk scores such as AusCVDRisk underestimate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in a substantial proportion of individuals who later experience events, with up to 65% initially classified as low or intermediate risk. This limitation is most consequential in the intermediate-risk group, where treatment decisions are uncertain and additional risk refinement could alter management. Circulating lipid species and inherited genetic variation capture complementary molecular aspects of atherosclerotic risk that are not fully reflected by conventional clinical variables, but are not routinely incorporated into primary-care risk assessment. We investigated whether selective integration of lipidomic and genomic risk signals into AusCVDRisk …
