"Is This America?" Fannie Lou Hamer, Humanity, Citizenship And The Struggle For Inclusive Democracy, Rhonda Chambers Sep 2026

"Is This America?" Fannie Lou Hamer, Humanity, Citizenship And The Struggle For Inclusive Democracy, Rhonda Chambers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the life, political rhetoric, and enduring legacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, focusing on how her lived experiences under Jim Crow shaped the development of a distinctive political voice grounded in dignity, moral conviction, and democratic struggle.  Born into a Mississippi sharecropping family and denied the educational and political opportunities afforded to white Americans, Hamer developed an understanding of injustice through the realities of racial and economic oppression. Her experience with segregation, voter suppression, violence, and the Black church became central to the way she understood citizenship and was able to articulate the demands of freedom.

Through an …

Mapping The Water Quality Of Jamaica Bay, New York (1996-2024): Principal Component Analysis And K-Means Clustering, Sneha Srivastava

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Jamaica Bay, located along the southeastern coast of New York City, acts as a biodiverse estuary of wetlands, meadows, and salt marsh islands. The purpose of this study is to analyze the water quality conditions of the region over time, comparing locations around the bay to identify hyperlocal features that influence larger trends in the hydrological system. Ten variables were used as water quality indicators, including total Kjeldahl nitrogen, salinity, pH, Secchi disk depth, and total phosphorus, among others, across five stations in the bay, between 1994 and 2024. After data cleaning and standardization methods were applied, principal component analysis …

Optimizing Nanoparticle Quality And Function In Applied Research, Angela M. Fried Sep 2026

Optimizing Nanoparticle Quality And Function In Applied Research, Angela M. Fried

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Radiology tests are among the fastest-growing categories of diagnostic analysis, and the gold standard of radiology tests is MRI.  MRI can be more informative if a contrast agent is used, and the standard of care contrasting agents (CA) are gadolinium-based.  Gadolinium is a heavy metal, toxic, and contraindicated for renal-compromised patients and the critically ill.  We propose a nanogel (NG) vehicle for an alternative organic CA.  CNs like 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPOL) and its derivatives have a variety of medical and industrial uses.  These cyclic CNs are stable, synthetic radicals with distinctive EPR/ESR signals and are helpful for various experimental applications, from …

Investigating The Role Of Striatal Cholinergic Interneuron D2 Receptors In Behavioral Flexibility, Janyn J. Alfred Sep 2026

Investigating The Role Of Striatal Cholinergic Interneuron D2 Receptors In Behavioral Flexibility, Janyn J. Alfred

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Dopamine (DA) and acetylcholine (ACh) interact within the striatum to shape reward-based learning and choice behavior. DA D2 receptors on cholinergic interneurons (CIN D2Rs) were genetically knocked out to investigate their role in choice allocation using a two-lever matching paradigm. Behaviorally, both knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) mice learned the initial task equally well. When shifted to asymmetric matching schedules (VI-90 vs. VI-180), ideal matching predicts that mice should allocate exactly 67% of their total responses to the rich lever. Neither group matched as predicted by the matching law. Instead, the KO mice showed a pattern where the higher rate …

This paper presents the results of a developmental causal analysis of the adult personality of U.S. vice president JD Vance, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data relating to Vance’s personality were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5-TR.

The findings of the personality assessment were previously reported in a separate paper. Vance’s primary personality patterns were found to be Dominant/controlling and Ambitious/confident, supplemented by …

Longstanding Mental Representations Of Familiar Faces, Sarah Laurence, A. Mike Burton, Camilla During, Jennifer Pink, Lucy Wilson, Mila Mileva Sep 2026

Longstanding Mental Representations Of Familiar Faces, Sarah Laurence, A. Mike Burton, Camilla During, Jennifer Pink, Lucy Wilson, Mila Mileva

School of Psychology

As we recognise people we know over many years, their faces can change, sometimes profoundly, and yet we continue to recognise them with ease. How do we update our representations over time? We present four pre-registered experiments to examine this. In Experiment 1, using likeness ratings and speeded name verification, fans of a long-running TV soap opera demonstrated that their representations of the characters’ faces were weighted towards their most recent encounters – when the characters were oldest. While we initially hypothesised that this was due to recency, Experiment 2 showed this not to be the case. When new participants …

Multi-Entity Multi-Measure Combined Line-Loss Control For Active Distribution Networks, Haiyun An, Yufang Liu, Qian Zhou, Jiaxun Li Sep 2026

Multi-Entity Multi-Measure Combined Line-Loss Control For Active Distribution Networks, Haiyun An, Yufang Liu, Qian Zhou, Jiaxun Li

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

The large-scale integration of diverse entities, including wind power, photovoltaic generation, and energy storage, has transformed distribution networks from traditional passive networks into active bidirectional networks. While helping alleviate energy and environmental crises, this transformation also poses significant challenges to line-loss control in active distribution networks (ADNs ).To address this issue, this paper proposes a multi-measure combined line-loss control method considering the participation of multiple entities.First, various loss-reduction measures, including distribution line upgrading, transformer replacement, and reactive power compensation, are considered comprehensively.A multi-objective optimization model accounting for both loss-reduction effectiveness and economic performance is established, with optimal economic operation of the ADN as the objective and secure operation of the distribution network with …

Lightweight Method For Remaining Useful Life Prediction Of Instrument Transformers Based On Quantization-Aware Training, Wei Zhang, Jiaona Mao, Zhuolin Bao, Zhuo Long, Xiaofei Zhang

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Instrument transformers are key measurement devices in power systems, and their performance directly affects the safe and stable operation of power grids. As deep learning is widely applied to device state prediction, the high computational costs and storage requirements brought by expanding model scales severely restrict their deployment on edge devices. To this end,an adaptive quantization-aware training (QAT ) method, named minimizing quantization error-aware training (MinQuant ),is proposed.Firstly,an adaptive quantizer that automatically adjusts quantization parameters according to data distribution characteristics is designed.Secondly,a quantization error minimization algorithm is proposed to explicitly optimize quantization error during training and achieve collaborative optimization of model performance and quantization precision. Finally, the …

Inversion Model For Point Of Maximum Vibration In Oil-Immersed Transformer Based On Multiphysics Load-Transfer Characteristics, Xingxing Hao, Haiying Li, Jiancheng Song

Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology

Accurately obtaining data at the point of maximum vibration in a transformer core is one of the challenges in power equipment health management. To address this problem,a new method based on multiphysics modeling and inversion techniques was proposed for detecting the point of maximum vibration acceleration in a transformer.First,a multiphysics load-transfer coupling model incorporating electromagnetic, structural, and fluid fields was used to analyze the vibration mechanism under an alternating and nonuniformly distributed magnetic field. The point of maximum i nternal vibration was then determined through harmonic response analysis.Second, considering data correlations, vibration measurement points on the outer wall of the oil tank that were strongly correlated …

Native Marburys: Judicial Review In Tribal Courts, Elizabeth Hidalgo Reese Sep 2026

Native Marburys: Judicial Review In Tribal Courts, Elizabeth Hidalgo Reese

University of Chicago Law Review

Not all of America’s courts have judicial review. This Article is the first to dis- cuss a body of judicial review case law in which this extraordinary judicial power has been rejected, is a recent development, or is not yet a settled question—judicial review cases from tribal courts. In a time when skepticism about the power that judicial review gives to the federal courts is at an all-time high, it is that much more important that we look to other examples of government systems wrestling with whether to give their courts the power of judicial review—to other courts that are …

Azrag, Thomas Dubois, Elfatih M. Abdel-Rahman

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Mechanistic trait models are increasingly considered to estimate persistence-related suitability for invasive species, although translating reproduction metrics into operational indicators for spatial decision-making remains challenging. Branching-process transformations are widely applied to convert mechanistic reproduction numbers into probabilities of establishment; however, such transformations may compress spatial gradients when persistence is broadly feasible. Using tomato red spider mite (Tetranychus evansi) as a case study across Africa, this study developed an uncertainty-aware, physiologically-based model and generated spatially explicit estimates of expected reproduction (R0). We compared three representations: raw mechanistic suitability, branching-process persistence probability, and quantile-normalised suitability. Although all representations preserved rank ordering, branching …

A growing body of research shows the potential of agroecology for enabling a shift to planet-friendly and socially just agrifood systems through context-specific transition pathways. We conduct a scoping review to identify and evaluate the potential of 42 existing agroecology adherence and/or agricultural performance assessment tools to generate credible, legitimate, salient and transferable evidence to inform these transitions. Results show that while multiple relevant tools exist, each of them can be strengthened in at least one area. While most tools are transferable (low time and resource requirements) and have legitimacy (open access with transparent methods), tools have variable saliency (holistic …

The Coming Health Insurance Transition, Brendan S. Maher Sep 2026

The Coming Health Insurance Transition, Brendan S. Maher

Faculty Scholarship

For decades, the dominant form of private health insurance in the United States—by far—has been employment-based group health insurance. Somewhere in the range of 175 million employees and their families receive health care coverage through a system in which employers serve as financiers, procurers, administrators, and fiduciaries of the health insurance promise. An overwhelming percentage of those health insurance arrangements are governed by ERISA, with little room for state law.

That is going to change.

This Article explains—for the first time anywhere—why and how. Because of the tremendous and as-yet unrecognized power of an obscure-sounding funding arrangement called the Individual …

Background and Hypothesis: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) produce severe symptoms, disability, and premature mortality, but only partially effective symptomatic treatments exist. Treatment development is impeded by lack of insight into disease mechanisms or objective biomarkers for clinical trials. Advances in genetics and neurobiology have converged on strong pathogenic hypotheses for SSDs centered on synapse dysfunction and excessive pruning, pathogenic processes that may produce measurable proteomic evidence in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Leveraging design precedents from successful fluid biomarkers discovery for Alzheimer’s disease, we undertook a pilot study to test the feasibility of repeated CSF and blood samples collection from individuals with …

Utahns' Views On Data Centers - Statewide Sample Descriptive Report, Jessica Schad, Gina Gilson, Stacia Ryder, Elizabeth Long-Meek, Alexandrea Sherman

Utah People and Environment Poll (UPEP)

As data center development accelerates in the western U.S, there are growing concerns about impacts to land, water, and air. This is especially true in rural communities, where development is rapidly increasing and communities have fewer resources. Broadly, data centers increasingly face vocal opposition from siting communities, who are concerned about water use, energy demand, and air quality. However, the impacts of data centers are highly context specific and localized, depending on regional energy availability, cooling technologies, and, increasingly, state-specific regulations.

Over the last year, Utah policymakers have increased efforts to monitor data centers and mitigate their impacts. However, such …

Pornography And Men's Violence Against Women And Children: From Production To Consumption, Gail Dines Phd., Mandy Sanchez Phd Sep 2026

Pornography And Men's Violence Against Women And Children: From Production To Consumption, Gail Dines Phd., Mandy Sanchez Phd

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The average age of first viewing mainstream pornography for boys is around ten to twelve years old. The pornography they encounter is largely from “tube sites,” named after YouTube, which are popular because they require no registration, no payment, and no subscription. For the most part, an adolescent only needs access to a digital device to view hundreds of thousands of free videos. As we discuss in this article, the weight of the scientific evidence shows that viewing pornography is associated with multiple social, emotional, sexual, and cognitive harms. However, none of these studies provide a detailed analysis of …

The Health Status Of U.S. Democracy, Philip C. Bobbitt Sep 2026

The Health Status Of U.S. Democracy, Philip C. Bobbitt

Faculty Scholarship

In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense, a pamphlet that galvanized American public opinion in the aftermath of the colonial confrontations at Lexington and Concord. The disorganized revolt against British authority was largely undecided on next steps, public opinion having failed to coalesce around capitulation to London or revolution against the British government. Paine’s argument for American independence was uncompromising. Prefiguring the Declaration of Independence that put King George III front and center in the emerging conflict, Paine wrote: “In the monarchies, the King is the Law but in America, Law is King.”

When Dentists Spoke Up, The Law Changed, Timothy Rath Sep 2026

When Dentists Spoke Up, The Law Changed, Timothy Rath

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This article details how grassroots member advocacy led to the passage of Michigan Senate Bill 105. Championed by the Michigan Dental Association, the law requires insurers to offer at least one fee-free payment method for dental reimbursements, protecting practices from being forced to pay transaction fees of 3% to 5% to access virtual credit card payments. Once a dentist opts out under the new law, insurers must maintain the alternative payment method. This legislative victory highlights the power of organized dentistry in relieving the administrative and financial burdens faced by individual practitioners amid rising operational overhead costs.
