Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations
The Pathways to Housing Study examines how people experience and navigate homelessness and the systems intended to help them move toward stable housing. Conducted in Multnomah County, Oregon, the study used a participatory mixed-methods design co-led with the TREES lived experience committee. The first phase was reported in April 2026 included surveys with 541 people with current or recent experience of homelessness. The second phase, reported here, used in-depth interviews and journey mapping with 29 participants to explore how pathways through homelessness unfold over time and across service systems.
Findings demonstrate that homelessness pathways are rarely linear. Participants described entering …

Child Welfare History Of Prison Inmates Would Provide Meaningful Data For Foster Care Policy Research And Planning, Maggie Zehring
Child Welfare History Of Prison Inmates Would Provide Meaningful Data For Foster Care Policy Research And Planning, Maggie Zehring
Student Scholarship
Child welfare intervention in the United States continues to operate distinctly different in each states and community without a full picture of the overall system’s efficacy. While federal and state agencies collect extensive information on children’s movement in and out of the foster care system and related adjudication, there lacks a nationwide understanding of how kids fare after exiting the system. This note argues that Departments of Correction (DOC) nationwide should collect child‑welfare history from incarcerated individuals as part of existing intake procedures and regularly communicate the data for the federal Children’s Bureau to aggregate for longitudinal analysis of foster …

Loss-of-function variants of the CHKB gene cause an autosomal recessive disease described as an early onset congenital megaconial (large peripheral mitochondria) muscular dystrophy. CHKB encodes choline kinase β, the first enzyme in the biochemical pathway for synthesis of the major membrane phospholipid phosphatidylcholine. Chkb-/- mice recapitulate the human disease with affected skeletal muscle displaying a decrease in strength, myofiber atrophy, megaconial mitochondria, fat accumulation within muscle cells, and an increase in muscle injury. Here, we assessed the therapeutic potential of an AAV therapy for the treatment of CHKB-mediated muscular dystrophy. Chkb-/- mice were injected once suborbitally with three different doses …

Andra, Abdul H. Raynaldo, Andika Sitepu, Hilfan A. P. Lubis, Kamal K. Ilyas
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: The Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE) score is widely used for risk stratification in patients with non–ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). However, it does not account for metabolic factors such as insulin resistance, which may contribute to residual cardiovascular risk. The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index has emerged as a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance with potential prognostic value. This study aimed to evaluate the incremental value of the TyG index beyond the GRACE score for predicting short-term outcomes.
Methods: In this retrospective observational design study, 110 patients with NSTEMI undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at Adam Malik Hospital, …

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: Microvascular complications—diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy—remain major contributors to morbidity in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Statins, widely used for cardiovascular risk reduction, have been proposed to exert additional microvascular protective effects via pleiotropic mechanisms, though evidence remains inconsistent.
Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, including randomized controlled trials and observational studies evaluating statin efficacy in preventing microvascular complications. Data on demographics, biochemical parameters, and clinical outcomes were extracted. A random-effects model (RevMan 5.4.1) was used, with outcomes reported as odds ratios (OR) and mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

Fractured Identities: Military–Civilian Dissonance And The Well-Being Of Women Veterans, Melissa D. Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For many women leaving military service, the path to civilian life involves a fundamental renegotiation of identity. Gender-specific pressures, institutional norms, and fractured belonging compound reintegration, yet the lived experiences of women veterans navigating competing identities remain underexplored. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of women veterans at least 5 years postdischarge who struggled with identity dissonance between their military and civilian identities. The study was informed by reculturation theory. Seven women veterans participated in semistructured interviews, and data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis, revealing five themes: institutions, culture, and unequal …

Displaced By Disaster: Examining The Effects Of Hurricanes Maria And Irma On Chronic Homelessness In The United States Virgin Islands, Clinton Hart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States Virgin Islands (USVI) is an island territory that is geographically isolated and has a fragile economy that has a limited capacity to address homelessness particularly when exacerbated by natural disasters. Existing literature demonstrated that major hurricanes can be associated with displacement, housing instability, and increased demand for emergency housing resources among socially vulnerable populations. However, limited longitudinal quantitative research has examined the impact of hurricanes on changes in homelessness trends in the USVI, representing a gap in territory-specific research. The purpose of this quantitative interrupted time series study was to examine homelessness trends associated with hurricanes Irma …
