Degree Assortativity And Estimation Of Degree Distribution In A Contact Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Peter Geissert
Degree Assortativity And Estimation Of Degree Distribution In A Contact Network Of People Who Inject Drugs, Peter Geissert
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation analyzes data from a respondent driven sampling (RDS) study of people who inject drugs in Portland, OR. The objective was to assess assumptions for the use of weighted estimators to estimate a population physical contact (syringe sharing) network degree distribution.
Visualization of degree distribution for social and physical networks, Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests of difference, and kernel tests of equivalence were used for comparison of distributions. Spearman's rho and GAM non-parametric regression models were used to test for association and assess non-monotonic relationship. The validity of Markov chain assumptions for RDS was assessed using a transition matrix, Markov chain graphs, …
Measurement-Aware Zero-Phase Iterative Learning Control For Robust Regulation Of Nonideal Boost Converters In Electric Vehicle Fast Charging, Aytaç Altan, Mohammed S. Alzaidi, Cağfer Yanarateş
Measurement-Aware Zero-Phase Iterative Learning Control For Robust Regulation Of Nonideal Boost Converters In Electric Vehicle Fast Charging, Aytaç Altan, Mohammed S. Alzaidi, Cağfer Yanarateş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Integrating battery energy storage with DC-DC boost converters for electric vehicle fast charging exposes the regulator to ageing-induced parameter drift, periodic load pulses, and, critically, the nonidealities in the output-voltage sensing chain. This paper proposes a measurement-aware, zero-phase iterative learning control scheme for robust output-voltage regulation of a nonideal boost converter whose parameters are matched to those of a commercial Texas Instruments TPS6102x battery regulator. The controller combines an inner proportional-integral stabilizing loop with an outer zero-phase learning law that updates a feedforward correction based on the sensor-captured output trajectory; a forward-backward robustness filter suppresses the amplification of measurement noise …

Doctoral Theses
With the exponential growth of complex data across domains, effective visualization has become increasingly crucial for understanding relationships hidden within high-dimensional spaces. However, existing visualization techniques often struggle to effectively capture and represent such high-dimensional data. Motivated by this challenge, we have developed NeuroDAVIS, a neural network model designed to visualize high-dimensional data by extracting meaningful latent representations through deep feature extraction. While NeuroDAVIS has successfully addressed the visualization aspect, we have soon recognized the necessity of identifying the most relevant features that contribute to the visualization and downstream analysis. To address this issue, we have extended our framework and …

Designing Integrated Program For Teaching Language, Literature, And Arts For Young Learners, Yusnita Febrianti, Anik Nunuk Wulyani, Shirly Riski Kusumaningrum, Joni Agung Sudarmanto
Jurnal Pendidikan Humaniora
Much research discussed the value of teaching additional language, literature, and the arts for young learners. Among the many benefits, some research mentioned the development of children's knowledge, emotion, intellect, imagination, as well as reading habits. Collectively, most studies in this area suggested facilitating the teaching of language, literature, and the arts as a part of lesson planning in the classroom. However, in an ESL context such as Indonesia, the ideal situation for the incorporation of language, literature, and the arts is not easy to accomplish. Therefore, the study outlines a design of a program that integrates the teaching of …

Bacterial Cellulose As Biofabricated Textile Material: Biotinkering And Trajectories Of Textile Materialisation, Ziqian Yu, Valentina Rognoli
Bacterial Cellulose As Biofabricated Textile Material: Biotinkering And Trajectories Of Textile Materialisation, Ziqian Yu, Valentina Rognoli
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is increasingly studied in material design and biodesign as a biofabricated material shaped through cultivation, harvesting, and processing. In fashion contexts, however, BC is often identified as a leather alternative, particularly in sheet form. While this framing has supported its integration into design practices, it constrains BC's textile potential. This paper investigates how BC becomes textile material through multiple materialisation trajectories rather than through a single substitute material form. The study is a comparative analysis of sixteen cases, framed by Material-Driven Design (MDD) approach. Fourteen external design and interdisciplinary cases provide the comparative basis, while two hands-on …
Strain-Sensing Auxetic Knit With Embedded Elastomeric Optical Fibers, Rashmi Mohan, Jeyeon Jo
Strain-Sensing Auxetic Knit With Embedded Elastomeric Optical Fibers, Rashmi Mohan, Jeyeon Jo
Textile Intersections Conference Series
This study presents the development and evaluation of a novel strain-sensing electronic textile that integrates elastomeric optical fiber within an auxetic knitted structure. Conventional wearable sensors often suffer from motion artifacts due to the mechanical mismatch between human-joint movements and the positive Poisson's ratio of standard fabrics. To address this, a log cabin knit pattern combining knit and purl stitches was designed to induce an out-of-plane buckling effect, resulting in a negative Poisson's ratio. A stretchable elastomeric optical fiber with a diameter of 1.2 mm was embedded within a 1×1 rib channel to ensure stable electromechanical coupling without hindering the …
Design Decisions As Leverage Points Of Textile Production And Supply Chain Orientation: Case Textile Colouration, Helmiina Hirviniemi, Maarit Salolainen, Astrid Larsen
Design Decisions As Leverage Points Of Textile Production And Supply Chain Orientation: Case Textile Colouration, Helmiina Hirviniemi, Maarit Salolainen, Astrid Larsen
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Textile design decisions, from fibres to finished fabrics, are often seen as matters of aesthetics and product functionality. However, these decisions also shape, among other aspects, production systems, supply chain structures, and the environmental impact of textile manufacturing. Textiles are constructed in complex production chains that transform fibres into yarns and ultimately into finished fabrics. At each stage, design and production choices influence not only the visual and technical properties of the final textile but also its ecological footprint and production system. This paper argues that more sustainable textile supply chains are achievable within existing technological capabilities if design and …

Towards Self-Powered Woven Triboelectric Textiles Using Commercial Yarns, Swarnalok De, Mithila Mohan, Matteo Iannacchero, Marie Vihmar, Jaana Vapaavuori
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Electronic textiles (e-textiles) are emerging as promising next-generation sensors with applications in sport, healthcare, defense, and human-computer interactions. On one hand, their soft interface with skin provides comfortable user experience and offers the advantage of tailoring the sensors to adapt to different body types. On the other hand, their dependence on external power sources such as electrochemical batteries for prolonged monitoring of physiological cues compromises these inherent advantages by incorporating bulky, rigid, and non-biocompatible components into the textile designing. In this context, textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (T-TENGs) are gaining attention due to their ability to act as self-powering sensors. However, most …
Hooked: Programmable, Capacitive Sensing Through Crochet As A Medium For Garments With Tactile Interaction, Juliette Hars, Josie Hughes
Hooked: Programmable, Capacitive Sensing Through Crochet As A Medium For Garments With Tactile Interaction, Juliette Hars, Josie Hughes
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Soft capacitive sensing in wearable textiles has many promising applications such as health monitoring, rehabilitation, or intelligent sports garments requiring sensitivity and sensory stability. Existing approaches either rely on rigid or semi-rigid components that compromise conformability, or on conductive yarn arrangements whose sensing geometry is fixed by the textile structure and difficult to adapt at design time. Crochet is an additive, stitch-by-stitch construction process which offers a largely unexplored route to programmable sensing surfaces, in which electrode geometry, baseline capacitance, and sensing range can be tuned directly through fabrication. We present a means of programmable capacitive sensing through crochet, enabling …

Developing An Industrial Microbial Colour System Through Textile Printing, Ruth Lloyd, Alice Taylor, James Ajioka, Carole Collet
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Emerging microbial colourants offer potential for more sustainable textile coloration, yet their integration into design and industrial production remains limited by the absence of systems that support their use. While existing biotechnology research has focused on colourant production and environmental performance, less attention has been given to how these materials can be applied within textile workflows. This paper demonstrates how microbial colour can be integrated into textile design through the development of reproducible protocols and a structured colour system. Drawing on practice-led doctoral research conducted in collaboration with the biotechnology company Colorifix, textile printing is used as a method to …

Textile Commons Of Care: Intergenerational Mending And Temporalities, Sam Bennett, Gabriele Ferri
Textile Intersections Conference Series
Visible mending is increasingly recognized as both a functional and creative craft practice and a form of material intelligence, where knowledge emerges through tactile engagement. This paper adds an additional layer that visible mending in community, where the act of mending is also visible, functions as a materially grounded practice of ongoing care through which knowledge and learning are distributed across people, textiles, and time. Drawing on a multi‑sited qualitative study, including a nine‑month global mending cohort, a visible mending workshop, and interviews with experienced menders, the paper examines how care aesthetics helps clarify the social and epistemic dimensions of …

Starting To Feel Like A Clinician: Graduate Student Experiences Of Communication Partner Training For People With Aphasia, Katie A. Strong, Esther S. Kim, Aura Kagan, Nina Simmons-Mackie
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Communication partner training (CPT) is among the most evidence-based interventions for supporting people with aphasia, yet many speech-language pathologists report not implementing it in practice, and graduate students frequently report low confidence communicating with people with aphasia prior to targeted training. This qualitative descriptive study examined graduate students' experiences learning CPT through a course-embedded, multi-modal experiential approach with structured reflection. Written reflections from 79 first-year graduate students across two university programs served as the data source. Reflections were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three themes emerged: Learning by Design, reflecting students' metacognitive awareness of the pedagogical elements most meaningful …
When Students Use Ai Before They Learn To Think Clinically: Cognitive Offloading In Communication Sciences And Disorders Education, Salim Alani
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Generative artificial intelligence is becoming part of how students study, write, summarize, and prepare for coursework in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). Much of the current discussion in higher education has focused on plagiarism, academic integrity, and responsible technology use. Those concerns matter, but they do not fully address what may be a larger educational issue in professional preparation programs. Students can now generate polished explanations, study materials, treatment rationales, and clinical summaries quickly, sometimes before independently developing the reasoning skills those tasks are intended to build. This paper examines cognitive offloading in CSD education, defined here as the shifting …

“It Didn’T Seem Too Much Like Therapy At All”: Facilitating A Relationship-Based Approach To Intervention, Jamie Maxwell, Kelly Rutherford, Pamela Holland, Haley Black
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
This exploratory case study examined the use of guided reflective writing to facilitate a relationship-based, strengths-oriented therapeutic perspective in a graduate student clinician providing intervention to a three-year-old child with a history of prenatal opioid exposure and communication delays. Over one semester, weekly therapy sessions were recorded and analyzed alongside the clinician’s guided written reflections. Qualitative analysis of early and final sessions alongside written reflections revealed a shift from a primarily compliance- and task-oriented focus to a more flexible, play-based, and relationally attuned approach. Changes were evident in the clinician’s language, activity structure, and responses to child-initiated behaviors. Findings support …

Understanding Career Path Decisions: Student Perceptions Of Working In School-Based Slp Settings, Joanna Scoggins, Michelle Jordan, Suzanne M. Adlof
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Currently, in many parts of the United States, there are dire shortages of SLPs working in school-based settings (ASHA 2024; Edgar & Rosa-Lugo, 2007). While the perceptions of school-based SLPs have been explored (Edgar & Rosa-Lugo 2007; Marante & Farquharson, 2021), there has been little work on the perceptions of students that lead toward their choice of career path. The current study aimed to gather information on SLP student perceptions to determine: 1) How do graduate students perceive working in a school setting as an SLP compared to other employment settings? 2) How do student perceptions and career intentions change …

Integrating Public Health Into Communication Sciences And Disorders Curriculum, Whitney D. Perkins, Yalanda M. Barner, Jennifer Wiles, Brandi Newkirk-Turner
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The field of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is increasingly integrating public health into its practice and research. This is because less than 10% of speech-language pathology and audiology graduate programs are housed within Colleges or Schools of Public Health (PH), reducing the likelihood that students in CSD have the opportunity for coursework and co-curricular activities that integrate PH and CSD. In this paper, we discuss the holistic approach we used to integrate PH into a CSD program at a Historically Black University. The approach was guided by PH and CSD accreditation standards and involved a didactic course, CSD courses …

Building Interprofessional Competency-Based Education Into Graduate Program Clinical Experiences: A Childhood Apraxia Of Speech And Sensory Processing Disorder Case Study Analysis, Kate Nealon, Zahava L. Friedman
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Abstract
Supporting interprofessional competency-based education requires embedding educational opportunities within coursework and clinical experiences. This education prioritizes student engagement and learning from, with and about other professionals to support collaboration and communication amongst clinicians (CAIE, 2020). While the provision of interprofessional clinical opportunities is recommended, it is challenging to implement effectively in professional and pre-professional settings. Academic settings have the unique ability to provide interprofessional collaborative clinical experiences for students. This pilot study focuses on Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and Occupational Therapy (OT) clinical assessment experiences, specifically in the context of pediatric motor speech and sensory processing disorders. These disorders …
