Self-Rated Mental Health As A Predictor Of Five-Year Incidence Of Heart Conditions, Cancer, And Dementia, In Post-Menopausal Women From Nshap Rounds 2 And 3, Annelie M. Persson
Gerontology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Population aging is accompanied by a rising incidence of chronic disease, highlighting the need to identify early indicators of disease risk to support prevention and delay onset. Mental health has gained attention as a potential predictor of health outcomes. Self-rated mental health (SRMH) has emerged as a validated measure capturing resilience, social support, and overall outlook. Few studies in older adults have examined the relationship between SRMH and incident chronic disease. Although mental health is associated with behavioral and psychosocial factors such as physical activity and happiness, these pathways have rarely been examined as mediators. Self-rated physical health (SRPH) is …

Hearing And Vision Impairment And Cognitive Function In Later Life: A Scoping Review Of Psychosocial Mechanisms, Lea Guelde
Honors Capstones
Introduction: Sensory impairment is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions in later life and has been consistently associated with poorer cognitive outcomes. While prior research has documented associations between sensory loss and global cognitive decline, less attention has been paid to the psychosocial mechanisms that may explain this relationship. Understanding these pathways is essential for identifying modifiable intervention targets. This scoping review mapped and synthesized the existing literature on associations between hearing and vision impairment and cognitive function in adults aged 60 years and older, with a specific focus on psychosocial mechanisms linking sensory function and cognition in later …

A Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Consumer Hoarding Behavior During Covid-19: Differences Between Sweden And The United States, Christy M. Cook, Pia A. Albinsson, James E. Stoddard
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This study is a cross-cultural exploration of consumer hoarding behavior during Covid-19; specifically, a comparison between Sweden and the United States. This research analyzes whether Swedish and American consumer hoarding behavior factors of prosocial orientation, consumer resilience and consumer risk-taking propensity reflect identical relationships during less predictable environmental forces (i.e., Covid-19 or global pandemic). Results from Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) show that consumer prosocial orientation is negatively related to consumer hoarding and prosocial orientation is positively related to consumer resilience. In turn, both prosocial orientation and consumer resilience exhibit a positive relationship towards consumer hoarding. Consumer resilience is …

Understanding And Measuring Functional Communication In Adults Living With Alzheimer's Disease And Related Dementias, Sarah Toledo
Honors Capstones
Functional communication declines across all stages of dementia and directly affects quality of life, yet traditional standardized assessments may not fully capture everyday communication abilities. This capstone examines how functional communication in older adults living with dementia can be conceptualized and measured beyond standard tools. The study analyzes previously recorded video conversations between adults with dementia and student partners. Conversations are transcribed and coded using two observational measures: the Verbal and Nonverbal Interaction Scale–Care Recipient (VNVIS-CR) and the Adapted Measure of Participation in Conversation for Dementia (MPC-D). Gestures, facial expressions, responsiveness, and engagement are included in the analysis, and double …

Raising Awareness Of Senior Transportation Services In Monterey County, Daisy Prado
Raising Awareness Of Senior Transportation Services In Monterey County, Daisy Prado
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Transportation barriers limit access to vital health and social services, especially for older adults. This capstone at Independent Transportation Network Monterey County (ITNMC) in Salinas focused on supporting older adults and those with visual impairments through volunteer-based rides, enabling independence and well-being. The project aimed to increase ITN awareness by sharing volunteer and rider stories on social media, building connections, and encouraging involvement. Social media presence grew, though limited time and structure hindered full implementation. Still, the foundation built is worth continuing to build. Intentional outreach can make a difference. With stronger planning, community support, and sustained effort, ITN can …

Background
Prescribing cascades occur when cholinesterase inhibitor (ChEI)-induced urinary incontinence is misinterpreted as a new condition, leading to overactive bladder (OAB) antimuscarinic initiation. We evaluated whether the ChEI-OAB antimuscarinic prescribing cascade was associated with delirium or falls compared with mirabegron in older adults living with dementia.
Methods
We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Anlitiks All-Payor Claims database (2015–2020). Participants were adults aged ≥ 65 years with dementia newly prescribed a ChEI with no prior ChEI or OAB therapy (180 days). A 60-day window identified OAB treatment initiation after ChEI therapy. Exposures were OAB antimuscarinics or mirabegron. Outcomes were …

The Investigation Of The Digital Divide: Government Literacy With African American Seniors, Jenettie Pirtle
Theses
My thesis, The Great Divide: An Investigation of Digital Literacy with African American Seniors, explores how race, age, and income shape access to technology and digital learning. Many African American seniors continue to face barriers to digital literacy due to limited resources, lack of exposure, and social inequalities. Using a qualitative approach, I conducted a focus group to hear directly from seniors about their experiences with technology, what challenges they face, how they feel about using it, and what support they need. Guided by Critical Race Theory and the concept of digital inequality, my analysis highlights the gap between access …

Using A Toxic Aging Coin To Assess Hexavalent Chromium Neurotoxicity: Impact Of Cr(Vi) On The Blood-Brain Barrier, Liam Buchanan
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
The US population faces simultaneous public health threats from both aging and environmental pollutants. Chief among these is hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], whose toxic effects in peripheral tissues are well-established but its effects on the brain are still understudied. Following previous results indicating hippocampal metals dyshomeostasis after Cr(VI) exposure, we aim to assess Cr(VI)’s impact on the blood-brain barrier (BBB), a key structure for brain protection. We exposed young, middle-aged, and geriatric rats of both sexes to low levels of Cr(VI) in their drinking water for 90 days, after which we used immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy to analyze tissues for evidence …
Depersonalization/Derealization Symptoms And Their Association With Relationship Functioning In College Students, Edgar Silva
Depersonalization/Derealization Symptoms And Their Association With Relationship Functioning In College Students, Edgar Silva
University Honors Program Senior Projects
Depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPDR) is a dissociative condition marked by persistent feelings of detachment from one’s thoughts, body, or external environment. Although DPDR most commonly emerges during late adolescence and early adulthood, it remains relatively understudied within college student populations, despite its potential consequences for psychological well-being and interpersonal functioning. The present study examines the association between depersonalization/derealization symptoms, mental health, and relationship functioning among university students. Specifically, this research investigates whether students reporting higher levels of depersonalization/ derealization symptoms differ from those with lower symptom levels in depression, anxiety, stress, and perceived social support. Participants will be undergraduate students recruited …

Loneliness And Social Support In Shift Work Employees, Jacob Lamprecht
Loneliness And Social Support In Shift Work Employees, Jacob Lamprecht
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Loneliness, a discrepancy between the desired quantity and quality of one’s relationships and their current relationships, has been connected to increases in mortality, as well as lower job performance, reduced job satisfaction, and increased burnout. However more recent studies indicate that the recipient may not always perceive the support as beneficial, resulting in “unhelpful social support. The present study examined how helpful and unhelpful social support relate to loneliness among healthcare shift workers, a population that may be prone to fatigue and health risks. I hypothesized that helpful support would be negatively related to loneliness and that unhelpful support would …
Resource Allocation Trade-Offs Between Longevity And Reproduction In Daphnia Magna, Amelia Pearson
Resource Allocation Trade-Offs Between Longevity And Reproduction In Daphnia Magna, Amelia Pearson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although trade-offs between longevity and reproduction have been described for a long time, the genetic mechanisms by which organisms modulate allocation of resources between these two essential processes remain poorly understood, due to their complex nature and their modification by existing nutritional states and environmental cues. Daphnia magna represents a valuable model for investigation in this area due to their moderate lifespan and cyclic parthenogenetic mode of reproduction, allowing for the easy study of gene by environment interactions. This dissertation first investigates the change in mortality, reproduction, activity, and gene expression when fully fed Daphnia and calorically restricted Daphnia are …

Barriers To Healthcare In Lgbtq+ Baby Boomers, Kellie Jones, Alexandra Lomeli, Bryant Vargas
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
LGBTQ+ Baby Boomers have experienced decades of discrimination, societal suppression, and exclusion from equitable healthcare. Despite advancement in recent years, healthcare disparities persist, and past experiences of discrimination may contribute to present-day barriers in accessing quality care. Existing research often neglects the intersectionality of aging, sexual orientation, and identity, leaving a gap in understanding the long-term effects of historical trauma on healthcare access for this population.
This quantitative study seeks to answer the question: How does the historical trauma experienced by the LGBTQ+ Baby Boomer population impact the healthcare barriers they face? This study proposes to examine the relationship of …

Building Resilience: How Protective Factors Mitigate Acculturative Stress In The Latinx Immigrant Community, Andres I. Delgado, Jamie Tierrablanca
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This literature underscores the vital role of protective factors in reducing
acculturative stress among Latinx immigrants. Key factors such as social
support, religious affiliation, familism, and physical activity help contribute to
mitigating the negative effects of acculturation. The Latinx community can
significantly benefit from integrative, culturally responsive interventions informed
by social work frameworks such as ecosystems theory and critical race theory
(CRT) as they are essential in addressing the mental health needs of this
population. Despite existing research, gaps remain in understanding the full
scope of the Latinx immigrant experience, suggesting a need for further
exploration. The expected findings will …

Advance care planning (ACP) is critical for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective end-of-life care and is typically facilitated by spouses and adult children. Yet, the growing number of older adults without children has been overlooked in ACP research. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine ACP practices and perceptions among childless adults aged 50+ in Singapore, a rapidly aging society with one of the world's highest childlessness rates. Quantitative analyses draw on nationwide survey data (N = 1,500), complemented by interviews with childless respondents (N = 26). We examine multiple dimensions of ACP: formal ACP (e.g., living wills, Lasting Power of …

Beyond The First Bout: Adaptations To Repeated Injuries Across Physiological And Pathological Conditions, Cory W. Baumann, Christopher P. Ingalls, Kazunori Nosaka, Jarrod A. Call
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Skeletal muscle exhibits remarkable plasticity following injury, yet most research has focused on responses to a single bout of eccentric contractions. This review addresses adaptations to repeated eccentric contraction–induced injuries across physiological and pathological conditions, with emphasis on insights from preclinical rodent models. In healthy muscle, the repeated bout effect (RBE) reduces strength loss and accelerates recovery after subsequent bouts. However, these adaptations are highly condition dependent. Aging can attenuate the RBE, while dystrophic muscle remains vulnerable to repeated injury despite compensatory remodeling. Other factors, including but not limited to, chronic alcohol intake and malignant hyperthermia can influence these responses, …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Findings from a survey with 7910 Singapore Life Panel members reveal that awareness of the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) was relatively high, but actual uptake remained low, with only one in three having made an LPA and pronounced gaps among lower socioeconomic groups. Despite this, attitudes towards LPA were generally positive, with perceived benefits centered on peace of mind and reducing burdens on family members. A major barrier to adoption is the misconception that children automatically have the legal authority to make decisions if parents lose mental capacity. Structural and psychological barriers, including cost, complexity, and limited guidance, further …

Growing Older Across Time And Space: The Impact Of Various Forms Of Capital On Social Support Networks Among Older Vietnamese Migrants, Hien Thi Nguyen, Lukasz Krzyzowski, Loretta Baldassar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Much has been written about the important role of social support networks (SSNs) for the well-being of older adults, encompassing their social, emotional and practical needs. Less is known about what happens to the SSNs of older people when they migrate, and even fewer studies have examined the impact of different forms of capital on these networks. Drawing on ethnographic interviews and participant observation with 22 older Vietnamese migrants in Australia (2020–21), this paper explores the influence of different forms of social, cultural, economic and symbolic capital on their SSNs. Data analysis comprised egocentric social network analysis of the connections …
