The Survival Of Sugar In Post-Emancipation British Guiana: East Indian Indentured Immigration And The Cheapening Of Labor, Wazir Mohamed

This Paper revisits the post-emancipation changes in the labor market of British Guiana. British Guiana, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, and several other locations were spaces where East Indian Indentured Immigrants from Idia became pivotal in the economy.[1] In the decade after emancipation (1838-1848), the rise of global free trade in sugar spurred by the equalization of duties in sugar factored in the search for a cheaper and the importation of a more pliable labor force to keep the wheels of sugar turning in British Guiana. In this meta-analytic review, we examined the current evidence on eating disorders in relation to meat consumption and meat abstention. We systematically searched six online databases in December 2025 for primary research on eating disorder-related variables in meat consumers and meat abstainers. Fifty-one studies with 55,984 participants (n_{meat consumers} = 44,282, n_{meat abstainers} = 9,751) met the inclusion/exclusion criteria. The outcomes were eating disorders and orthorexia nervosa. This paper examines a revision in an introductory econometrics course at an undergraduate liberal arts college. The instructors have incorporated extensive use of data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series from the Current Population Survey (IPUMS-CPS), with applied examples that demonstrate econometric theory. The key element is a short empirical paper assignment in which all students work on a common research question, but with different data sets. The paper assignment includes a series of scaffolding assignments using IPUMS-CPS data. This approach has several benefits, including ease of implementation into any course that has an empirical paper component, significantly streamlined …

The Afterlife Of Luxury: Triggers, Intentions, And Channel Preference In China's Resale Boom, Junfeng Shi, Dehua Xia

This study examines the factors shaping Chinese consumers' intention to resell used luxury products and their preferences for resale channels, drawing on the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data were collected from 381 consumers via an online survey and analyzed using structural equation modelling with confirmatory factor analysis and regression. Results indicate that the primary motivation for reselling is the lack of need when items are no longer useful or suitable. Consumers' resale intentions are driven mainly by internal factors: attitudes, sense of duty, perceived benefits, and behavioral control, while external factors, such as subjective norms, have minimal impact. …

We will be taking pictures and using ArcGIS survey123 to input data connecting the tornado to historical forces such as Redlining and Slavery. Exposures to particulate dust matter (PM10 and smaller) from aggregate comminution facilities (ACF) can lead to the onset of environmentally associated pulmonary diseases (EAPDs); acute and chronic asthma (Type I allergic hypersensitivity reaction), chronic pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and lung cancer. Digital transformation is reshaping higher education, yet gamified business simulations remain among its most widely used and least examined tools. This case study reports on the use of the HUBRO Sustainable Marketing Simulation, a Sage resource, in Marketing 1, a core first-year undergraduate module at TU Dublin. Sustainability in business education is typically reserved for final-year, postgraduate or elective modules. This intervention instead embedded Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and balancing the triple bottom line from the first year of a four-year degree. Mitigating and reducing nutrient levels is critical for managing risks of harmful algal blooms for agricultural operations, municipal drinking water suppliers, stormwater managers, and other water resource professionals. This article presents economic information about three best management practices (BMPs) treatment technologies well-suited to improving water quality for agricultural operations and small pond owners.

A Deep Learning-Based Approach For Mapping Shrubs In Arctic Tundra From Very High-Resolution Imagery, Darko Radakovic, Mark Chopping, Bruce Cook, Aparna S. Varde, Stefan A. Robila

Arctic shrub expansion is accelerating due to climate warming, but accurately mapping it at fine spatial scales remains challenging due to spectral overlap between shrubs and surrounding vegetation, heterogeneous tundra landscapes, and limited availability of very high-resolution imagery. This study presents a novel mapping and validation approach that integrates very high-resolution (< 1 m) QuickBird (QB) and WorldView (WV) satellite imagery across 12 North Slope sites, using deep learning architectures to map changes in shrub cover from 2002 to 2022. Deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), ResNet, VGG, U-Net, and Vision Transformer, were trained on 4,100 3-channel pansharpened multispectral images (200×200 m). Two traditional machine learning models (Random Forest and Support Vector Machine) served as a control group. Leave-one-site-out cross-validation showed that all models performed well (AUC-ROC of 0.78–0.86, F1 at validation of 0.33-0.46) and had a moderate to strong agreement with field reference data (R2 = 0.76–0.87). The pretrained VGG and ResNet models achieved the strongest field-reference alignments for shrub cover prediction, while the difference with traditional models was small. Temporal trend analyses for July and August demonstrate a cover change of 0.06–0.45% yr-1 with unweighted mean area slopes and 0.01–0.92% yr-1 inverse-variance weighting. Growth rates were found to depend on the analytical design. Furthermore, the limiting factor in mapping shrub cover was not model complexity but the quality of the training data labels (annotation method explained ∼26% of the error variance). Per-scene cover error was seen across architectures (ρ = 0.67). Comparison with NASA Goddard's LiDAR, Hyperspectral and Thermal (G-LiHT)-derived Canopy Height Models revealed a weak-to-moderate relationship (R2 = 0.04–0.77), suggesting horizontal cover and vertical canopy structure capture complementary aspects of shrub abundance. These results demonstrate the potential of deep learning to map decadal shrub expansion at sub-meter resolution.
