Graphene Oxide–Driven In Situ Bismuth Reduction Enables Highly Efficient Electroreduction Of Co2 To Formic Acid, Hao Feng, Bohong Zhang, Jie Huang, Xinhua Liang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
To enable large scale efficient electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to formic acid (HCOOH), it is important to develop catalysts that can be operated in a wide potential window with good stability. Herein, we successfully synthesized Bi2O3 catalyst supported on graphene oxide (GO) and graphene (G) and found that Bi2O3/GO catalyst had a better overall performance than Bi2O3/G. The Bi2O3/GO catalyst demonstrated an outstanding CO2RR performance with a greater than 90% faradaic efficiency (FE) across a wide applied potential window …

The high-resolution rotational spectrum of difluoro diiodomethane is reported for the first time. A molecular-beam broadband Fourier transform microwave spectrometer recorded the spectrum over the frequency range of 5.9–18.1 GHz. The rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, and nuclear spin-rotation constants for the two equivalent iodine nuclei were determined from fitting 1378 hyperfine transitions of 163 rotational transitions: A = 2743.79691(18)MHz, B = 587.83103(5) MHz, C = 528.72470(5) MHz, χaa = −1213.287(6) MHz, χbb – χcc = −885.210(5) MHz, and χab = 1437.721(5) MHz. 31 dipole-forbidden/quadrupole-allowed transitions, arising from the large nuclear quadrupole coupling effect of iodine, …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Bacterial d-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenases (HBDHs) catalyze the conversion between d-3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate with NAD as the cofactor but not with NAD 2'-phosphate (NADP). However, HBDHs of the early-branched eukaryotic genus Trypanosoma utilize both NAD and NADP (T. brucei) or exclusively NADP (T. cruzi). Here we reveal that NADP specificity of T. cruzi HBDH arises from stabilization of the flexible β2αB loop by the 2'-phosphate interaction. Stabilization of this loop by a nearby C64Y mutation enables T. cruzi HBDH to use NAD in addition to NADP; thus, the Cys/Tyr residue is critical for determining cofactor specificity in trypanosomal HBDHs, suggesting that most …

This study examines the key factors influencing the adoption of Artificial Intelligence Personal Computers (AIPCs) by enterprises, exploring both the benefits and challenges of their business applications. As enterprises increasingly require real-time computing, autonomous decision-making, and improved cybersecurity, AIPC—combining artificial intelligence and edge computing—has become a strategic technology for boosting competitiveness. Particularly in scenarios with less reliance on cloud services, businesses are more likely to adopt devices with local processing and standalone AI capabilities to meet the dual needs of operational efficiency and data privacy. Through an extensive review of the literature, this study identifies four main dimensions and sixteen …

Social Responsiveness As A Mediator In Adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Autistic Youth With Maladaptive And Interfering Anxiety, Jeffrey J Wood, Eric A Storch, Katherine Sung, Karen S Wood, Philip C Kendall
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Numerous adaptations to interventions have been included in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for autistic youth. This study examines the degree to which CBT adapted to the social needs of autistic youth confers significant benefit by promoting social responsiveness. A secondary analysis was conducted on a multisite randomized clinical trial (Wood et al. in JAMA Psychiatry 77:474-483, 2020) comparing adapted CBT with standard-of-practice CBT and treatment-as-usual (TA). Autistic youth (N = 167; aged 7-13) with maladaptive and interfering anxiety participated. The adapted CBT (BIACA) uses a modular format, with an emphasis on supplementing common CBT practice elements (reframing and graded exposure) …

Suitability of renal-mesenteric target arteries is an essential criterion for fenestrated-branched endovascular aortic repair (FB-EVAR). We describe a staged adjunctive technique of target vessel false lumen (FL) embolization to improve suitability for FB-EVAR in patients with chronic postdissection thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (PD-TAAA) and dissection extension into the superior mesenteric artery (SMA). Three patients with SMA dissection and ectasia (diameter > 12-14 mm) underwent staged FL embolization with pre-emptive stent placement to optimize SMA incorporation. Using bilateral transfemoral access with intravascular ultrasound guidance, the proximal SMA true lumen was stented with an 8 L × 39 mm VBX balloon-expandable stent graft (W. …

Turning Ontologies Into Vectors: Embedding Malay Ontological Knowledge For Smarter Machine Learning, Zayanah Zafirah Zulkipli, Ruhaila Maskat, Noor Hasimah Ibrahim Teo, Jie Zhang
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
This conceptual study proposes a three-layer methodological framework for representing Malay ontological knowledge in continuous vector spaces and integrating ontology-derived representations with machine-learning models. The framework comprises an Ontology Layer, an Embedding Layer, and an Integration Layer. Its contribution is not a new ontology-embedding algorithm rather, it provides a Malay-oriented methodological organization that links ontology construction, embedding-method selection, symbolic-subsymbolic fusion, ontology-guided consistency checking, and downstream evaluation. In the present study, the ontology layer is represented through a prototype Malay linguistic ontology and its class hierarchy and knowledge graph, whereas the embedding, integration, consistency-checking, and downstream evaluation stages are proposed components …

Bicultural Lives, Indigenous Futures: Identity, Language, And The Science Of Well-Being, Teresa D. Lafromboise
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Indigenous well-being is strengthened when cultural identity, language, community, and contemporary life are understood not as competing worlds, but as interconnected sources of strength. This talk examines how bicultural competence is linked to psychological well-being, highlighting how Native American people draw on both cultural traditions and broader society while maintaining a strong sense of ethnic-racial identity and belonging. It considers the protective roles of cultural engagement, Indigenous language, tribal connectedness, and culturally grounded approaches to resilient adaptation. Together, these perspectives challenge deficit-based views of Indigenous communities and point to a science of well-being that recognizes culture not simply as context …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The environment or experiences of a parent generation can impact the fitness of the next generation, a phenomenon known as parental effects. While a high-quality diet can directly benefit an individual and a low-quality diet can reduce fitness, a parental effect occurs only when there is a transgenerational response to these stimuli that manifests in the individual’s offspring. In dietary generalists, a parental effect could play an important role for offspring performance if the species experiences considerable variation in quality across host plants; posi- tive parental effects may result from host matching between parents and offspring on high-quality host plants, …

Arabic Clinical Mental Health Named Entity Recognition Via Distant Supervision: Recurrent Vs. Transformer-Based Architectures, Ali A. Jalil, Rabih Sbera
Polytechnic Journal
Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made great strides, but the accurate extraction of mental state and physiological symptoms from patient-generated clinical consultations in dialectal Arabic, which is plagued with significant morphological complexity, colloquial noise and an extremely limited number of manually annotated clinical benchmarks, remains a significant challenge. In this work, we propose an end-to-end token-level symptom extraction system that is systematic and grounded in distant supervision paradigm and a strict gold standard evaluation with human verification to ensure real-world clinical generalization. A large weakly labelled corpus of 46,873 Arabic patient questions was created based on a clinical lexicon …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
Surgeons in training share notable parallels with competitive athletes, including rigorous training, skill specialization, and functioning under pressure. Surgical educators have leveraged this comparison, incorporating techniques from sports psychology, such as mental imagery and mindfulness, to improve trainees' individual performance and well-being. Surgical trainees and athletes both rely on effective teamwork for optimal outcomes, suggesting that residency leaders can glean valuable team-level insights from sports psychology. This article examines how the structure of surgical residency influences team dynamics, using concepts from sports psychology to identify evidence-based strategies for improving program cohesion and resident well-being. The surgical literature typically conceptualizes surgery …

Bright Shadows, Fresh Appeal: How Shadow Brightness Shapes Perceptions Of Fresh Products, Jonghee Kum, Hyewon Cho, Hyejin Lee
Asia Marketing Journal
This study examines how shadow brightness (light vs. dark) influences consumer responses to fresh products across four studies. Studies 1a and 1b demonstrate that consumers evaluate fresh products with light shadows more favorably compared to those with dark shadows. Study 2 identifies the underlying mechanism, showing that light shadows increase perceived wholesomeness, which positively affects consumer responses. Study 3 tests a boundary condition, revealing that the positive impact of light (vs. dark) shadows is pronounced for uncooked products but reduced for cooked products. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the influential role of visual elements in shaping consumer …

Smart Tourism Technology And Sustainable Tourism: Creating Vivid Memories To Drive Tourists' Behavioural Intention, Hatane Semuel, Regina Jokom, Trixie Nova Bella Tandijaya, Sienny Thio
Asia Marketing Journal
This study examines the impact of smart tourism technology and sustainable tourism on tourists' behavioural intention, with vivid memory as a mediating variable. Earlier studies have investigated smart tourism technology and sustainability separately, but there is a lack of understanding of how these two perspectives interact with memory theory to influence tourist behaviour. To address this gap, a survey was conducted involving 742 tourists across four major Indonesian cities, and the data were analysed using path analysis with SmartPLS. The findings show that sustainable tourism directly and indirectly shapes behavioural intention, while smart tourism technology influences it only indirectly through …

Leadership & Religious (In)Toleration: Religious Conflict, Leadership, And Shakespeare’S Measure For Measure, Kristin M.S. Bezio
Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies
This piece focuses on the stresses and biases that are produced by religious conflict, beginning with the Catholic-Protestant divide that characterized Shakespeare’s lifetime, particularly focusing on the Elizabethan (and Jacobean) and government’s persecution of Catholics within England. This chapter uses Measure for Measure to examine Shakespeare’s argument for religious toleration within this Catholic-Puritan framework and the persistent threats of violence leveraged against the “wrong” religion. At the conclusion of the piece, I will turn to the contemporary religious right to discuss how we can view modern religious conflict in the US (and around the world) through this same framework.
